Abstract
A simple catalytic method for self-coupling of secondary alcohols leading to the synthesis of β-branched ketones under mild conditions is reported. Well-defined ruthenium pincer complex catalyzed the reactions. Optimization studies revealed that sodium tert-butoxide is an appropriate base for this transformation. Functionalized aryl methanols, heteroaryl methanols, and linear and branched aliphatic secondary alcohols underwent facile catalytic self-coupling reactions. Mechanistic studies revealed that both catalyst and base are crucial to achieve dehydrogenation of secondary alcohols to ketones, their subsequent controlled aldol condensation, and further hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated intermediates, leading to the selective formation of β-branched ketone products. Notably, the noninnocent PNP ligand which displays amine-amide metal-ligand cooperation operative in a catalyst played a key role in facilitating this catalytic self-coupling of secondary alcohols. Liberated molecular hydrogen and water are the only byproducts.

Abstract
1,3,5-tri-substituted benzene rings emerged with unique properties has widespread applications in materials, boosting the rapid development of their synthesis. Despite the significance, the direct construction of hetero-1,3,5-trisubstituted benzene core was far less-developed. Herein, we realized a DBU-mediated isomerization/6-π electro-cyclization/oxidative aromatization cascade of sulfonyl-substituted allenyl ketones under an air atmosphere (DBU=1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene). This versatile protocol featured metal-free conditions, easy operation, and broad functional group tolerance provides a new avenue for the construction of hetero-1,3,5-tri-substituted benzene.

Abstract
Herein, a room-temperature catalytic pathway for 1,3,5-tri(het)aryl derivatives from nitroalkenes using simple Pd(OAc)2 is presented. This newly developed C-C bond-forming methodology takes place in a cascade manner with the initial pallado-Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) type adduct. The broad substrate scopes, functional group tolerance, and different aryl-substituted benzene derivatives make this methodology more attractive. Furthermore, the mechanistic understanding through isolation of intermediates and DFT studies of the catalytic cycle provide requisite insight into the methodology.
