Catalytic ozonation process using PAC/γ-Fe2O3 to Alizarin Red S degradation from aqueous solutions: a batch study

Integrated Ozonation Ni-NiO/Carbon/g-C3N4 Nanocomposite-Mediated Catalytic Decomposition of Organic Contaminants in Wastewater under Visible Light

Developing a hybrid process for wastewater purification is of utmost importance to make conventional methods more efficient and faster. Herein, an effective visible light-active nickel-nickel oxide/carbon/graphitic carbon nitride (Ni-NiO/C/g-C3N4)-based nanocatalyst was developed. A hybrid process based on ozonation and Ni-NiO/C/g-C3N4 visible light photocatalysis was applied to decolourize the Congo red (CR), Alizarin Red S (ARS), and real dairy industry wastewater. The synthesized catalyst was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Χ-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectrophotometry (UV-Vis DRS). The factors affecting the catalytic process were evaluated, including contact time, solution pH, initial dye concentration, etc. The degradation rate of CR and ARS was compared between the photocatalysis, ozonation, and integrated photocatalytic ozonation (PC/O3) methods. The results showed 100% degradation of CR and ARS within 5 min and 40 min, respectively, by integrated PC/O3. The reusability of the modified catalyst was evaluated, and four successive regenerations were achieved. The modified Ni-NiO/C/g-C3N4 composite could be considered an effective, fast, and reusable catalyst in an integrated PC/O3 process for the complete decolourization of wastewater.

Adsorption performance and mechanism of cationic and anionic dyes by KOH activated biochar derived from medical waste pyrolysis

The massive generation of medical waste (MW) results in a series of environmental, social, and ecological problems. Pyrolysis is one such approach that has attracted more attention because of the production of value-added products with lesser environmental risk. In this study, the activated biochar (ABC600) was obtained from MW pyrolysis and activated with KOH. The adsorption mechanism of activated biochar on cationic (methylene blue) and anionic (reactive yellow) dyes were studied. The physicochemical characterization of biochar showed that increasing pyrolysis temperature and KOH activation resulted in increased surface area, a rough surface with a clear porous structure, and sufficient functional groups. MB and RYD-145 adsorption on ABC600 was more consistent with Langmuir isotherm (R² ≥ 0.996) and pseudo-second-order kinetics (R² ≥ 0.998), indicating chemisorption with monolayer characteristics. The Langmuir model fitting demonstrated that MB and RYD-145 had maximum uptake capacities of 922.2 and 343.4 mg⋅g^-1. The thermodynamics study of both dyes showed a positive change in enthalpy (ΔH°) and entropy (ΔS°), revealing the endothermic adsorption behavior and randomness in dye molecule arrangement on activated-biochar/solution surface. The activated biochar has excellent adsorption potential for cationic and anionic dyes; hence, it can be considered an economical and efficient adsorbent.

The Effect of Magnetic Composites (γ-Al2O3/TiO2/γ-Fe2O3) as Ozone Catalysts in Wastewater Treatment

Using municipal sewage as a source of reclaimed water is an important way to alleviate the shortage of water resources. At present, advanced oxidation technology (AOPs), represented by ozone oxidation, is widely used in wastewater treatment. In this study, γ-Al₂O₃, a low-cost traditional ozone catalyst, was selected as the matrix. By modifying magnetic γ-Fe₂O₃ with a titanate coupling agent, in situ deposition, and calcination, the final formation of a γ-Al₂O₃/TiO₂/γ-Fe₂O₃ micrometer ozone catalyst was achieved. A variety of material characterization methods were used to demonstrate that the required material was successfully prepared. The catalyst powder particles have strong magnetic properties, form aggregates easily, and have good precipitation and separation properties. Subsequently, ibuprofen was used as the degradation substrate to investigate the ozone catalytic performance of the prepared catalyst, and this proved that it had good ozone catalytic activity. The degradation process was also analyzed. The results showed that in the ozone system, some of the ibuprofen molecules will be oxidized to form 1,4-propanal phenylacetic acid, which is then further oxidized to form 1,4-acetaldehyde benzoic acid and p-phenylacetaldehyde. Finally, the prepared catalyst was applied to the actual wastewater treatment process, and it also had good catalytic performance in this context. GC-MS detection of the water samples after treatment showed that the types of organic matter in the water were significantly reduced, among which nine pollutants with high content, such as bisphenol A and sulfamethoxazole, were not detected after treatment.

Adsorptive Removal of Alizarin Red S onto Sulfuric Acid-Modified Avocado Seeds: Kinetics, Equilibrium, and Thermodynamic Studies

The present work evaluates the synthesis of a novel, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly chemically-treated avocado seed powder (CTASP) as an adsorbent in removing alizarin red S (ARS) from synthetic solution. By using a set of analytical techniques, including FTIR, XRD, EDX, RS, and SEM, the adsorbent was characterized for its physical and chemical properties. Batch study experiments were conducted to determine the effectiveness of the CTASP as an adsorbent. The maximum adsorption capacity of 67.08 mgg-1 was attained at optimum conditions of 3 gL-1 adsorbent dosage, pH 3, contact time of 30 min, and at temperature 303 K. After 30 minutes, the equilibrium was reached, and the experimental data was explained for isotherm, kinetic, and thermodynamic processes. The results indicated that pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich isotherm were the best fits for the data. The findings of the analysis of the thermodynamic parameters for the process showed that the system was an exothermic and spontaneous. According to the desorption studies, 0.1 M NaOH can be utilized as a separating reagent to desorb 90.53% of ARS that was adsorbed. Regeneration experiments were conducted to make the process more practical and affordable, and it was discovered that the CTASP adsorbent could be successfully regenerated up to four times. In comparison with other adsorbents, the current low-cost adsorbent had the exceptional regenerative capability and delivered multilayer adsorption capacity. Additionally, it has been demonstrated that the CTASP is an effective material for the detoxification of ARS dye from wastewater.

Catalytic ozonation of chloramphenicol with manganese-copper oxides/maghemite in solution: Empirical kinetics model, degradation pathway, catalytic mechanism, and antibacterial activity

The composite material of manganese-copper oxide/maghemite (Mn_xCu_yO_z/γ-Fe₂O₃) was synthesized by the co-precipitation-calcination method. With the initial concentration of 0.2 g/L Mn_xCu_yO_z/γ-Fe₂O₃ and 10 mg/L O₃, the chloramphenicol (CAP, 10 mg/L) could be completely degraded, which was about 2.22 times of that treated with ozonation alone. The contribution of O₃ and hydroxyl radical (•OH) for CAP degradation in the catalytic process was 6.9% and 93.1%, respectively. According to the effects of catalyst dosage, ozone dosage, and pH on the catalytic performance of Mn_xCu_yO_z/γ-Fe₂O₃, a predictive empirical model was developed for the ozonation with the Mn_xCu_yO_z/γ-Fe₂O₃ system. The HCO₃^-/CO₃^2- and phosphates in solution could inhibit the degradation of CAP with the inhibition ratios 8.45% and 13.8%, respectively. The HCO₃^-/CO₃^2- could compete with CAP and react with •OH, and the phosphates were considered as poisons for catalysts by blocking the surface active sites to inhibit ozone decomposition. The intermediates and possible degradation pathways were detected and proposed. The catalytic ozonation could effectively control the toxicity of the treated solution, but the toxicity was still not negligible. Furthermore, Mn_xCu_yO_z/γ-Fe₂O₃ could be easily and efficiently separated from the reaction system with an external magnet, and it possessed excellent reusability and stability.

Degradation of N-Nitrosodiethylamine in aqueous solution by gamma-irradiation

N-Nitrosodiethylamine (NNDEA) is a toxic compound which is affranchised into the medium mostly via industrial wastewater. For the investigation of degradation mechanism of NNDEA, the aqueous solutions of NNDEA were exposed to Advanced Oxidation processes (AOP's) such as gamma-irradiation, ozonation, UV irradiation and UV/Ozone (ozone effect) and UV/H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide effect). Since the structure of NNDEA is small, it is rapidly degraded in all processes except UV-irradiation process but forming acetic acid and formic acid just was seen in gamma and UV/H₂O₂processes. In the other processes, NNDEA is transformed directly to nitrite and nitrate which they can form NNDEA again in the medium. The concentration of NNDEA was decreased from 50 to 21 mg L^-1 after 2.20 kGy gamma-irradiation. After 2.85 kGy gamma irradiation, NNDEA was completely removed from the medium. The results showed that the concentration of NNDEA decreased with UV-irradiation time, the concentration of 50 mg L^-1 NNDEA was 42, 30, 24 and 19 mg L^-1 after 10, 20, 40 and 60 min UV-irradiation, respectively. It has been investigated that the UV-irradiation does not have much effect on the degradation of 50 mg L^-1 NNDEA solution and requires long-term irradiation. In this study, gamma-irradiation was chosen as the best method because of the complete degradation effect and the prevention of the reformation of the NNDEA.

Preparation, characterization, and catalytic activity of a novel MgO/expanded graphite for ozonation of Cu-EDTA

Magnesium oxide/expanded graphite (MgO/EG) catalyst was synthesized and applied for enhancing the degradation of Cu-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Cu-EDTA) in an aqueous solution. The MgO/EG catalyst was characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, and FTIR. For assessing the catalytic activity of MgO/EG, essential influencing factors were investigated including catalyst dosage, O₃ dosage, initial pH, initial Cu-EDTA concentration, and coexisting ions. The results show that the catalytic material showed high catalytic oxidation capacity for the Cu-EDTA removal in the MgO/EG/O₃ system. 100% of Cu(II) and 73.2% of TOC removal efficiency could be achieved in the MgO/EG/O₃ system at the reaction times of 90 min. This efficiency was higher than that seen for other systems, including O₃ alone (Cu(II) 81.4%/TOC 60.6%), EG/O₃ (84.2%/64.1), MgO/EG (< 4%/< 4%), and EG (< 4%/< 4%). A small decrease in the Cu(II) and TOC removal rate was observed after three runs in the stability and reusability experiments of the catalyst. Assays with radical scavenging experiments confirmed that MgO/EG-mediated oxidation was dependent on a hydroxyl radical pathway. The UV-vis spectra confirmed that the absorption peak of Cu-EDTA was gradually decreased and finally disappeared.

Synthesis of modified ZnO nanorods and investigation of its application for removal of phthalate from landfill leachate: A case study in Aradkouh landfill site

In this study, zinc oxide nanorods, co-doped with iron and silver, were synthesized in a co-precipitation method. Its properties were determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The results of FE-SEM and TEM showed that zinc oxide nanoparticles synthesized and co-doped with iron and silver were formed as separate nanorods. Also, the average values of DBP and DEHP amount of phthalates in the leachate from the landfill site of Aradkouh were obtained 52.5 and 94.69 mg/L, respectively. The highest removal efficiency in real samples for phthalates was found to be 52%. The highest removal efficiency of TOC were was 61%. The synthesized nanostructure could have proper efficiency in removal of phthalates from water sources under the visible light of LED lamp.

Recent Achievements in Dyes Removal Focused on Advanced Oxidation Processes Integrated with Biological Methods

In the last 3 years alone, over 10,000 publications have appeared on the topic of dye removal, including over 300 reviews. Thus, the topic is very relevant, although there are few articles on the practical applications on an industrial scale of the results obtained in research laboratories. Therefore, in this review, we focus on advanced oxidation methods integrated with biological methods, widely recognized as highly efficient treatments for recalcitrant wastewater, that have the best chance of industrial application. It is extremely important to know all the phenomena and mechanisms that occur during the process of removing dyestuffs and the products of their degradation from wastewater to prevent their penetration into drinking water sources. Therefore, particular attention is paid to understanding the mechanisms of both chemical and biological degradation of dyes, and the kinetics of these processes, which are important from a design point of view, as well as the performance and implementation of these operations on a larger scale.
