Synthesis of TiO2/ZnO electrospun nanofibers coated-sewage sludge carbon for adsorption of Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD from aqueous solutions and industrial wastewaters

Fe3O4@BNPs@ZnO-ZnS as a novel, reusable and efficient photocatalyst for dye removal from synthetic and textile wastewaters

In this study, new magnetic nanocomposites with different molar ratios of zinc oxide-zinc sulfide were synthesized together with photocatalysts MNPs@BNPs@ZnO and MNPs@ BNPs@ ZnS. The photocatalytic behavior of these hybrid nanocomposites under visible light and ultraviolet light was investigated to remove methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO) dyes, real textile and carton effluents. After studies, the best active photocatalyst in both visible light and ultraviolet light is MNPs@BNPs@ZnO-ZnS (ZnO/ZnS: 0.75:0.25), which displayed the best performance in the ultraviolet region. According to the TEM, the average particle size for MNPs@BNPs@ZnO-ZnS (ZnO/ZnS: 0.75:0.25) is between 10 and 30 nm. Zeta potential (DLS) showed that the charge on the photocatalyst surface is negative at most pHs. PL analysis confirmed that the amount of hole-electron recombination in the optimal photocatalyst is less than MNPs@BNPs@ZnO and MNPs@BNPs@ZnS. Also, based on kinetic studies, the rate constant for removing azo dyes such as MO and MB was 0.0186 and 0.0171 min^-1, respectively. It is worth noting that in addition to the novelty of the synthesized photocatalysts, the UV and visible lamps used in this research are inexpensive, durable, and highly efficient.

Recent progress on electrospun nanofibrous polymer membranes for water and air purification: A review

Developing new polymer membranes with excellent thermal, mechanical, and chemical stability has shown great potential for various environmental remediation applications such as wastewater treatment and air filtration. Polymer membranes have been widely investigated over the past years and utilized to overcome severe ecological issues. Membrane-based technologies play a critical role in water purification and air filtration with the ability to act efficiently and sustainably. Electrospun nanofiber membranes have displayed excellent performance in removing various contaminants from water, such as bacteria, dyes, heavy metals, and oil. These nanofibrous membranes have shown good potential to filter the air from tiny particles, volatile organic compounds, and toxic gases. The performance of polymer membranes can be enhanced by fine-tuning polymer structure, varying surface properties, and strengthening overall membrane porosity. In this review, we discuss the involvement of electrospun nanofibrous membranes in different environmental remediation applications. It further reviews the recent progress of polymer membrane development by utilizing nanoparticles and naturally occurring polymers.

Isotherm models for adsorption of heavy metals from water - A review

Adsorption is a widely used technology for removing and separating heavy metal from water, attributed to its eco-friendly, cost-effective, and high efficiency. Adsorption isotherm modeling has been used for many years to predict the adsorption equilibrium mechanism, adsorption capacity, and the inherent characteristics of the adsorption process, all of which are substantial in evaluating the performance of adsorbents. This review summarizes the development history, fundamental characteristics, and mathematical derivations of various isotherm models, along with their applicable conditions and application scenarios in heavy metal adsorption. The latest progress in applying isotherm models with a one-parameter, two-parameter, and three-parameter in heavy metal adsorption using carbon-based materials, which has gained much attention in recent years as low-cost adsorbents, is critically reviewed and discussed. Several experimental factors affecting the adsorption equilibrium, such as solution pH, temperature, ionic strength, adsorbent dose, and initial heavy metal concentration, are briefly discussed. The criteria for selecting the optimum isotherm for heavy metal adsorption are proposed by comparing various adsorption models and analyzing mathematical error functions. Finally, the relative performance of different isotherm models for heavy metal adsorption is compared, and the future research gaps are identified.

Synthesis and applications of TiO2/ZnO hybrid nanostructures by ZnO deposition on TiO2 nanotubes using electrochemical processes

In recent years, TiO2/ZnO hybrid nanostructures have been attracting the interest of the scientific community due to their excellent photoelectrochemical properties. The main advantage of TiO2/ZnO hybrid nanostructures over other photocatalysts based on semiconductor materials lies in their ability to form heterojunctions in which the valence and conduction bands of both semiconductors are intercalated. This factor produces a decrease in the band gap and the recombination rate and an increase in the light absorption range. The aim of this review is to perform a revision of the main methods to synthesise TiO2/ZnO hybrid nanostructures by ZnO deposition on TiO2 nanotubes using electrochemical processes. Electrochemical synthesis methods provide an easy, fast, and highly efficient route to carry out the synthesis of nanostructures such as nanowires, nanorods, nanotubes, etc. They allow us to control the stoichiometry, thickness and structure mainly by controlling the voltage, time, temperature, composition of the electrolyte, and concentration of monomers. In addition, a study of the most promising applications for TiO2/ZnO hybrid nanostructures has been carried out. In this review, the applications of dye-sensitised solar cell, photoelectrocatalytic degradation of organic compounds, photoelectrochemical water splitting, gas sensors, and lithium-ion batteries have been highlighted.

Review of the Recent Advances in Electrospun Nanofibers Applications in Water Purification

Recently, nanofibers have come to be considered one of the sustainable routes with enormous applicability in different fields, such as wastewater treatment. Electrospun nanofibers can be fabricated from various materials, such as synthetic and natural polymers, and contribute to the synthesis of novel nanomaterials and nanocomposites. Therefore, they have promising properties, such as an interconnected porous structure, light weight, high porosity, and large surface area, and are easily modified with other polymeric materials or nanomaterials to enhance their suitability for specific applications. As such, this review surveys recent progress made in the use of electrospun nanofibers to purify polluted water, wherein the distinctive characteristics of this type of nanofiber are essential when using them to remove organic and inorganic pollutants from wastewater, as well as for oil/water (O/W) separation.

A critical review of state-of-the-art electrocoagulation technique applied to COD-rich industrial wastewaters

Electrocoagulation (EC) is one of the emerging technologies in groundwater and wastewater treatment as it combines the benefits of coagulation, sedimentation, flotation, and electrochemical oxidation processes. Extensive research efforts implementing EC technology have been executed over the last decade to treat chemical oxygen demand (COD)-rich industrial wastewaters with the aim to protect freshwater streams (e.g., rivers, lakes) from pollution. A comprehensive review of the available recent literature utilizing EC to treat wastewater with high COD levels is presented. In addition, recommendations are provided for future studies to improve the EC technology and broaden its range of application. This review paper introduces some technologies which are often adopted for industrial wastewater treatment. Then, the EC process is compared with those techniques as a treatment for COD-rich wastewater. The EC process is considered as the most privileged technology by different research groups owing to its ability to deal with abundant volumes of wastewater. After, the application of EC as a single and combined treatment for COD-rich wastewaters is thoroughly reviewed. Finally, this review attempts to highlight the potentials and limitations of EC. Related to the EC process in batch operation mode, the best operational conditions are found at 10 V and 60 min of voltage and reaction time, respectively. These last values guarantee high COD removal efficiencies of > 90%. This review also concludes that considerably large operation costs of the EC process appears to be the serious drawback and renders it as an unfeasible approach for handling of COD rich wastewaters. In the end, this review has attempted to highlights the potential and limitation of EC and suggests that vast notably research in the field of continuous flow EC system is essential to introduce this technology as a convincing wastewater technology.

A critical review on the electrospun nanofibrous membranes for the adsorption of heavy metals in water treatment

Electrospun nanofibrous membranes (ENFMs) have many superior advantages, such as large specific surface area, high porosity, easy modification, good flexibility, and easy separation for recycling, which are consider as excellent adsorbents. In this paper, the research progress in the adsorption of heavy metals in water treatment by ENFMs is reviewed. Three types of ENFMs, including organic polymer ENFMs, organic polymer/inorganic material composite ENFMs and inorganic ENFMs are summarized, and their adsorption capacities for heavy metals in water are compared. The adsorption selectivity and capacity of ENFMs for heavy metals are depended largely on the type and number of functional groups on the surface of membranes, and usually the more the functional groups, the higher the adsorption capacity. The adsorption mechanisms of ENFMs are also mainly determined by the type of functional groups on the membrane. At present, the main challenge is to achieve the mass production of high-quality nanofibers and their actual application in the treatment of heavy metal-containing wastewater. Therefore, more consideration should be focused on the improvement of stability, mechanical strength and reusability of ENFMs. This review may provide an insight for the development of ENFMs-based adsorbents for heavy metals separation and water purification in the future.
