Abstract
We report the synthesis of iminosugar C,C-glycosides starting from 6-azidoketopyranoses. Their Staudinger-azaWittig-mediated cyclization provided bicyclic N,O-acetals, which were stereoselectively opened with AllMgBr to afford β-hydroxyazepanes with a quaternary carbon α to the nitrogen. Their ring contraction via a β-aminoalcohol rearrangement produced the six-membered l-iminosugars with two functional handles at the pseudoanomeric position. Inversion of the free OH at the azepane level furnished the d-iminosugars.

Abstract
This personal account focuses on synthesis of polyhydroxylated piperidines, a subset of compounds within the iminosugar family. Cyclisations to form the piperidine ring include reductive amination, substitution via amines, iminium ions and cyclic nitrones, transamidification (N-acyl transfer), addition to alkenes, ring contraction and expansion, photoinduced electron transfer, multicomponent Ugi reaction and ring closing metathesis. Enantiomerically pure piperidines are obtained from chiral pool precursors (e. g. sugars, amino acids, Garner's aldehyde) or asymmetric reactions (e. g. epoxidation, dihydroxylation, aminohydroxylation, aldol, biotransformation). Our laboratory have contributed cascades based on reductive amination from glycosyl azide precursors as well as Huisgen azide-alkene cycloaddition. The latter's combination with allylic azide rearrangement has given substituted piperidines, including those with quaternary centres adjacent to nitrogen.

Abstract
The use of l-sorbose in the synthesis of functionalized cyclopentene derivatives was accomplished. These cyclopentene derivatives are related to those found in naturally occurring jatrophane frameworks and in other bioactive compounds. The formation of allyl α-l-sorbopyranoside was a key synthetic step. Regioselective introduction of protecting groups was followed by the hydrolysis of the allyl glycoside to furnish a fully protected acyclic l-sorbose derivative. This acyclic intermediate was subsequently used to give an orthogonally protected polyhydroxylated cyclopentene, which has potential for further synthesis of bioactive compounds. The protected cyclopentene itself showed a clear cytotoxic activity when tested against a panel of human cancer cell lines (HT29, LS174T, SW620, A549, and HeLa cells).

Abstract
IN THE TITLE COMPOUND (SYSTEMATIC NAME {(3aS,5S,6R,6aS)-3a-[(benz-yloxy)meth-yl]-6-hy-droxy-2,2-di-methyl-tetra-hydro-furo[2,3-d][1,3]dioxol-5-yl}methyl 4-methyl-benzene-sulfonate), C23H28O8S, the absolute structure and relative stereochemistry of the four chiral centres have been established by X-ray crystallography, with the absolute configuration inferred from the use of l-sorbose as the starting material. The central furan-ose ring adopts a slightly twisted envelope conformation (with the C atom bearing the methyl-benzene-sulfonate substituent as the flap) from which three substituents depart pseudo-axially (-CH2-O-benzyl, -OH and one acetonide O atom) and two substituents pseudo-equatorially (-CH2-O-tosyl and second acetonide O atom). The dioxalane ring is in a flattened envelope conformation with the fused CH C atom as the flap. In the crystal, mol-ecules pack in columns along [010] linked by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds involving the furan-ose hy-droxy group and furan-ose ether O atom.
