Abstract
Objectives. Sleep-related issues are important health issues. This study aimed to investigate the global prevalence of sleep-related issues in industrial workers. Methods. A syntax of keywords was used to search the PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus databases. The search time was limited to articles published until September 2020, and the search range was in English. Events and samples were extracted for each study to calculate the prevalence. For all subgroups, events and samples were extracted to calculate the results of the subgroups. The random-effects method was used in the analysis. Heterogeneity was examined at the levels of all analyses. Results. Forty-eight articles were included in the analysis as eligible studies. Sleep-related issues have 30% prevalence in the 95% confidence interval (CI) [25, 35%]. The prevalence of sleep-related issues in men was 38%, 95% CI [31, 45%] and in women was 32%, 95% CI [14, 50%]. The prevalence of poor sleep quality, insomnia, sleep duration <7 h, snoring and sleepiness was 36, 22, 37, 29 and 10%, respectively. Conclusions. Sleep-related issues have a high prevalence in industrial workers, and the cause of these differences needs to be addressed and increasing insights provided to prevent and treat sleep disorders.

Abstract
A 'compressed' shift schedule (substitution of a rest day by a shift, shortening the duration of work breaks) was introduced for a better fit with aircraft traffic load. Thereafter, the company asked for a survey assessing the effects of the compressed shift system. Air traffic controllers (ATCOs) completed retrospectively a specific questionnaire assessing the effects of shift schedule (modified vs. initial) and of traffic load on fatigue, alertness (on-shift, upon awakening, during daily non-work activities), and sleep (duration, satisfaction). Work organization had marginal and unexpected effects, which might indicate ATCOs' disapproval of the intervention. Traffic load affected sleep satisfaction and alertness during work and non-work activities. Specific effects of shift included reduced sleep time prior to morning shifts compared to night shifts, whereas alertness and fatigue were rated at comparable levels for both shifts. Results suggest that shiftwork features which favor sleep loss across a work cycle have deleterious consequences on alertness and increase the need for recovery, which are further enhanced by traffic load.

Abstract
Objectives. Depression is known to be associated with a variety of occupational factors. The aim of this study was to meta-analyze the prevalence of depressive disorder in industrial workers. Methods. Three databases indexing abstracts of articles were selected and searched until August 2020: PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus. For each study, the sample size and number of depression events were extracted, and after extracting these data, the random effects method was used to assess the prevalence. I2 and χ2 values were used to investigate the heterogeneity. Results. The prevalence of depressive disorder in industrial workers is 21%. The prevalence of depressive disorder in men and women industrial workers is 23 and 28%, respectively. The prevalence of depressive disorder in Asia, Europe and America is equal to 22, 18 and 20%, respectively. The result of the heterogeneity test showed that the heterogeneity is high. Conclusion. The prevalence of depression in industrial workers is higher than in the general population. These differences can be due to the working conditions of industrial workers. Therefore, the work environment and the promotion of occupational health can play an important role in preventing depression.

Abstract
Objective Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in emergency medicine (EM) residents is associated with patient safety. However, studies regarding EDS in EM residents are limited. The objective of this study was to identify the prevalence of EDS and its associated factors among EM residents. Methods Epworth sleepiness scale scores, working hours per week (WHW), night working days per month, working environment, and depression were analyzed using data from the 2019 Korean Emergency Medicine Resident Survey. Results The survey response rate was 63.8% (384/601). Among 241 respondents, the prevalence rate of EDS was 32.4%. Multivariable logistic regression analysis demonstrated that WHW (odds ratio [OR] = 1.03, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.01–1.06) and depression (OR = 3.64, 95% CI = 1.91–6.96) had increased ORs for EDS. Conclusions Approximately one-third of EM residents had EDS. Depression and WHW were the associated factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES One of the health problems in recent decades is the prevalence of smoking in the world. In this study, the global prevalence of smoking in industrial workers was investigated using meta-analysis. METHOD The method of the present study was a systematic review and meta-analysis. Three scientific sources, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus, were selected for the search, and these databases were searched until September 2020. Random effects method was used for the analysis and then the analysis was performed for the type of smoking (Current, Former), gender, and continent. Heterogeneity was examined in all analyses. RESULT A total of 88 studies were included in the meta-analysis. The prevalence of smoking in industrial workers was 41% also the confidence interval was 35-48%. The prevalence of current smoking in industrial workers was 39% also the confidence interval was 29-48%. The prevalence of former smoking in industrial workers was 18% also the confidence interval was 13-22%. I2 heterogeneity test was 99.9%. DISCUSSION From the findings of the present study, it can be seen that industrial workers are more exposed to smoking compared to the general population, and this can put their health at greater risk.

Abstract
Atypical working time patterns are known to be associated with adverse physical health consequences. The impact of chronic exposure to shift work on psychological wellbeing and mental health is also reported, but not fully appreciated. We conducted a systematic review of the literature on the association between shift work and affective disorders using the electronic databases Medline, PsycINFO, Embase, Web of Science and Google Scholar. Data extracted included detailed characteristics of shift work, the affective disorders under study, and the population targeted. Some 25 extracted articles satisfied all inclusion and exclusion criteria. Findings of these articles reveal shift work is associated with increases in depressive symptoms (12 studies), anxiety (2 studies), and depression and anxiety (7 studies). Only three studies found no association between shift work and depression. The findings of this review suggest that shift work increases the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Abstract
Police officers are required to work irregular hours, which induces stress, fatigue, and sleep disruption, and they have higher rates of chronic disease and mortality. Cortisol is a well-known "stress hormone" produced via activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. An abnormal secretion pattern has been associated with immune system dysregulation and may serve as an early indicator of disease risk. This study examined the effects of long- and short-term shiftwork on the cortisol awakening response among officers (n = 68) in the Buffalo Cardio-Metabolic Occupational Police Stress (BCOPS) pilot study (2001-2003). The time each officer spent on day (start time: 04:00-11:59 h), afternoon (12:00-19:59 h), or night (20:00-03:59 h) shifts was summarized from 1994 to examination date to characterize long-term (mean: 14 ± 9 yrs) and short-term (3, 5, 7, or 14 days prior to participation) shiftwork exposures. The cortisol awakening response was characterized by summarizing the area under the curve (AUC) for samples collected on first awakening, and at 15-, 30-, and 45-min intervals after waking. Data were collected on a scheduled training or off day. The cortisol AUC with respect to ground (AUC(G)) summarized total cortisol output after waking, and the cortisol AUC with respect to increase (AUC(I)) characterized the waking cortisol response. Officers also completed the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale. Waking cortisol AUC values were lower among officers working short-term night or afternoon shifts than day shifts, with maximal differences occurring after 5 days of shiftwork. The duration of long-term shiftwork was not associated with the cortisol awakening response, although values were attenuated among officers with more career shift changes.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation of sleepiness during night shift (SNS) in male shiftworkers with nonpharmacological self-management (nPSM) practices to facilitate good day sleep, and also with job stress. Sleepiness on the job and possible correlates to SNS among 157 male shiftworkers in a rotating three-shift schedule at a chemical plant were cross-sectionally investigated using a self-administered questionnaire. Multivariate analyses revealed that SNS was positively associated with drinking alcoholic beverages before day sleep, but inversely associated with subjective health status, being of the evening type, abstaining from caffeine before day sleep, having a bath before day sleep, job control, reward from work, feeling suited to the job, and support from colleagues. SNS correlated with certain nPSM practices and also with possible modifiers of job stress. These findings provide clues to developing countermeasures against SNS among shiftworkers. The effects of nPSM practices and job stress management on their day sleep and SNS should be examined in detail.

Abstract
Two forms of continuously forward rotating 12-h shift schedules exist at BASF's Ludwigshafen site. These shift schedules were compared with a daytime working system to investigate potential differential effects on employee's health status assessed with the Work Ability Index (WAI). In the 3 x 12 system, a 12-h day shift is followed 24 h later by a 12-h night shift, and after a day off the employee returns to the day shift. The 4 x 12 schedule follows the same pattern except that there are 2 days off between the night and next day shift. A total of 924 participants (278 3 x 12 and 321 4 x 12 shiftworkers and 325 day workers) were recruited. A self-administered questionnaire was used to obtain information about shiftwork schedule, demographic characteristics, and lifestyle and social factors, and the WAI was applied. The outcomes of interest were the WAI sum score and its seven dimensions. In examining the relationship with the WAI categories, a Proportional Odds Model (POM) was used to identify the potential determinants. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the impact of age on single dimensions of WAI after adjustment for potential confounding factors. Increasing age and obesity (BMI > or = 30) were the only significant determinants of poorer WAI. Although a positive association was found linking the second WAI dimension (work ability in relation to job demands) with age, an inverse association was demonstrated consistently between age and the third and fourth WAI dimensions, i.e., number of diagnosed diseases and estimated work impairment due to disease, after adjustment for potential confounders. The age-dependency was moderate overall, but seemed to be stronger among shift- than day workers, although this difference did not reach statistical significance. There was no significant differential impact of the working time systems on the WAI sum score or on the individual WAI dimensions. Thus, there is no indication of an excessive adverse health impact of these shift schedules compared to day work, to the extent that health can be measured by the WAI.

Abstract
Workplace health promotion is a strategy to improve the health and well-being of people at work. The measures aim at the personal, organisational and work environment. Shift work is one of many reasons provoking increased job stress. According to worldwide epidemiological data, up to 30% of the working population are employed in shifts. Taking into consideration that shift work causes a large number of somatic and psychiatric diseases which bear considerable negative consequences for the health status and the quality of life, it seems to be important to initiate health promotion strategies for shift workers in the companies. The results of recent studies indicate that well-scheduled und targeted health programmes can change the lifestyle of shift working employees and have an impact on the risk factors involved. One problem, though, is a considerable time lag till effects become apparent; therefore, the long-term economic effects of workplace health promotion have not been evaluated sufficiently to date. These definitely positive effects highlight the demand for trainings and workshops for people in shift work. We urgently suggest a speedy implementation of the recommended strategies by companies with shift work systems. In our view, this poses a challenge to the “infant” interdisciplinary field of sleep medicine that should be solved.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the factors believed to influence the psychological well-being of women living in a modern remote Australian mining community. DESIGN A qualitative phenomenological study conducted through focus group discussions. SETTING Remote Australian mining town. PARTICIPANTS Sixteen women living in a remote Australian mining town with a partner undertaking shiftwork at one of the local mines. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Women in a remote Australian mining community revealed, through focus group discussion, the factors influencing their psychological well-being. RESULTS Four themes were identified to be of importance for the women. These were the impacts of mining work, isolation, culture and the social environment on their happiness and well-being, and that of their families and the broader community. CONCLUSIONS Psychological well-being of women in a remote mining community might be improved through better local medical services, increased efforts at social inclusion and community connectedness, greater access to child care and better community infrastructure and pleasant surrounds. The findings also question the stereotypes of strong masculinist cultures and limited activities and services in such communities. Further research is highly recommended.

Abstract
Shift work, including night work, has been regarded as a risk factor for medical safety. However, few studies have investigated the difference in medical error risk between two- and three-shift systems. A total of 1,506 registered nurses working shifts at teaching hospitals participated in this study to evaluate the difference in medical error risk between two- and three-shift systems. After adjustment for potential confounding factors using a log Poisson generalized estimating equation model, the results showed significantly higher frequencies of perceived adverse events over 6 months in the three-shift than in the two-shift system, with estimated mean numbers of adverse events of 1.05 and 0.74, respectively. Shorter intervals after night shifts and greater frequency of night shifts in three-shift systems, which reduce the recovery time from night shift work, may be linked to increased medical errors by nurses.

Abstract
OBJETIVOS: Identificar os níveis de estresse, analisar a utilização de medicamentos para dormir e correlacionar níveis de estresse, qualidade do sono e uso de medicamentos. MÉTODOS: Estudo quantitativo, transversal, descritivo e comparativo, realizado com 203 enfermeiros de uma instituição hospitalar da cidade de Campinas, São Paulo, Brasil. Foi utilizado um questionário de identificação, Escala Bianchi de Stress modificada (EBSm) e o Índice de Qualidade do Sono de Pittsburgh. RESULTADOS: Dentre 203 enfermeiros, 17,7% utilizavam medicamentos para dormir. Dos enfermeiros que utilizaram medicamentos para dormir 48,6% demonstraram estado de alerta e alto nível de estresse (p = 0, 016) e apresentaram na sua totalidade (n=36) uma qualidade de sono ruim. Abstract
"Balancing Interests", the theme of the 17th International Symposium on Shift Work and Working Time held in Hoofddorp, The Netherlands (September 2005), refers to the ambition to reach an optimal balance between the various aspects of shift work. Economic, ergonomic, physical, and psychosocial factors all interact in determining the impact of shift work at the individual, organizational, and societal level. It is the challenge of this multidisciplinary field of research to model all relevant factors in such a way that it will allow us to optimize the dynamic trade-off between the yield and the risk of shift work. The organizers of the 17th International Symposium and the co-editors of these proceedings are convinced that the high quality of the contributions will bring us closer to this ultimate goal.

Abstract
Sleep duration is associated with cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk factors, depression, automobile and workplace accidents, and prospective mortality. Little is known, however, about sleep patterns in the US population. The 2004-2007 National Health Interview Survey-Sample Adult Files provide nationally representative data for 110,441 noninstitutionalized US adults aged 18 years or older, and multinomial logistic regression examines whether variables in 5 domains-demographic, family structure, socioeconomic, health behavior, and health status-are associated with long or short sleep duration. Being older, non-Hispanic black, or a current or former smoker; having low levels of education, income, or few income sources; consuming few or numerous drinks in a week; or reporting cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression, underweight, or activity limitations is associated with increased odds of both long and short sleep duration. Other variables are associated with shorter (e.g., living with young children, being unmarried, working long hours, more frequent binge drinking) or longer (e.g., being younger, Mexican American, pregnant, or having low levels of physical activity) sleep hours. The authors identify numerous risk factors for long and short sleep; many of those variables are potential confounders of the relation between sleep hours and other health outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To test the hypothesis that organizational injustice contributes to sleeping problems. Poor sleep quality can be a marker of prolonged emotional stress and has been shown to have serious effects on the immune system and metabolism. METHODS Data were from the prospective Whitehall II study of white-collar British civil servants (3143 women and 6895 men, aged 35-55 years at baseline). Age, employment grade, health behaviors, and depressive symptoms were measured at Phase 1 (1985-1988) and baseline sleeping problems were assessed at Phase 2 (1989-1990). Organizational justice was assessed twice, at Phases 1 and 2. The outcome was mean of sleeping problems during Phases 5 (1997-1999) and 7 (2003-2004). RESULTS In men, low organizational justice at Phase 1 and Phase 2 were associated with overall sleeping problems, sleep maintenance problems, sleep onset problems, and nonrefreshing sleep at Phases 5 and 7. In women, a significant association was observed between low organizational justice and overall sleeping problems and sleep onset problems. These associations were robust to adjustments for age, employment grade, health behaviors, job strain, depressive symptoms, and sleeping problems at baseline. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that perceived unfair treatment at workplace is associated with increased risk of poor sleep quality in men and women, one potential mechanism through which justice at work may affect health.

Abstract
This special issue of Chronobiology International presents a selection of papers originally delivered at the 18th International Symposium on Shift Work and Working Time, held at Yeppoon, Australia, in August 2007. The key theme of the symposium was "Aging and Working Time: Creating Safe Environments." Older workers are widely believed to experience greater difficulty than younger workers adapting to shift work and irregular work schedules. However, while the three reviews of age effects published here (Costa & Di Milia, 2008; Folkard, 2008b; Gander & Signal, 2008) identify evidence that older workers do indeed adapt less well, they also demonstrate that much more research is urgently required. The remaining papers address various aspects of the impact of work schedules on health, safety, sleep, and performance. They can be divided into three broad categories: circadian and other periodic factors; sleep, sleepiness, and fatigue; and other aspects of health and adjustment. This collection of papers showcases the best of contemporary research on the safety and health effects of working hours, continuing the tradition established by the two previous issues of the journal devoted to earlier symposia on shift work and working time.

Abstract
The authors define a subject as euchronic when the circadian parameters--tau (tau=period), Ø (acrophse or peak time), A (amplitude), and M (MESOR=24 h rhythm-adjusted mean)--of a set of circadian variables are within the confidence limits of appropriate reference values of healthy subjects (HS). We define internal desynchronization as a state in which the circadian tau of a set of rhythms differs from 24 h and when the tau of a given variable differs from that of other variables. Such a state was first observed in singly isolated HS without access to time cues and clues. Herein, data and analyses are presented demonstrating that internal desynchronization appears to be a rather common phenomenon in HS dwelling in their natural environment (i.e., in the presence of usual zeitgebers). This has been documented by longitudinal studies (n approximately=15 days) of the circadian rhythm in sleep-wakefulness, body temperature, right- and left-hand-grip strength, and reaction time involving a total of 246 HS and 134 shift workers (SW), with 45.5% showing good and 54.5% poor SW tolerance. The presence of internal desynchronization observed in SW was associated SW intolerance, with symptoms being sleep alteration/disturbances, sleeping-pill dependence, persisting fatigue (asthenia), mood alteration, and digestive complaints. Internal desynchronization was also documented in groups of HS and tolerant SW, though it was almost the rule among the intolerant SW. The authors introduce two new terms: allochronism to describe the time organization of those SW who evidence internal desynchronization without detectable clinical symptoms, and dyschronism to describe the time organization of those SW who exhibit internal desynchrobization plus the symptoms of SW intolerance or medical illness. The condition of allochronism is not restricted only to SW tolerance, as it was detected in 112 HS without medical complains when exposed to various experimental conditions, including medications and placebos, sojourn in the high Arctic summer, intensive sport training, and task-loaded cognitive performance testing. Dyschronism in SW who are sleep-deprived is associated with persisting fatigue. An unpublished Gallup survey found that 47% of 2478 respondents experienced a state of asthenia during the previous 12 months, with symptoms mimicking those of SW intolerance. In one-third of the cases, the origin of the asthenia was undetermined. Taking into account the high incidence of internal desynchronization found in past investigations and the clinical observation that sleep deprivation is a consequence of many acute and chronic medical conditions (nocturnal pain, nocturnal asthma, etc.), it is suggested that dyschronism may be responsible for the asthenia of unknown origin, at least for some persons. The interindividual (including sex-related) variability in the propensity to exhibit an altered temporal organization, whether it be transient or persistent (i.e., reversible or non-reversible) suggests the involvement of genetic factors. The Dian-Circadian genetic model previously proposed by the authors seems pertinent to conceptualize and explain the various levels and output of internal desynchronization.

Abstract
To examine the association of job stress with sleep-related breathing disturbance (SBD), a cross-sectional sample of 1940 males aged 17-83 (mean 45) years in 292 small and medium-sized enterprises in Japan were surveyed by means of a self-administered questionnaire. Perceived job stress was evaluated by the Japanese version of the Generic Job Stress Questionnaire developed by the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, which included 13 job stress variables. Participants were divided into thirds according to their job stress scores. SBD was assessed by the question "Have you ever felt difficulty breathing during sleep or has anyone in your family told you that you have such difficulty?" SBD was defined as presence of symptoms more than once a month. Risk of SBD through job stress was estimated using logistic regression with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) as measures of association. Prevalence of study-defined SBD was 6.7%. Participants who perceived the lowest level of social support from supervisors, and highest levels of job future ambiguity, interpersonal conflict at the workplace, job dissatisfaction, variance in workload, and quantitative workload had significantly increased risk of SBD after adjusting for potential confounders. High depressive symptoms, as measured by Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale scores of 16 or higher, were also significantly associated with increased SDB. Although the results should be considered preliminary because of the self-reporting and cross-sectional design, data suggest that exposure to high job stress could be a possible risk factor for developing or aggravating SBD. Results also indicate that job stress should be considered when evaluating SBD in occupational and clinical settings.
