Similarity in romantic couples' drinking motivations and drinking behaviors

An examination of cannabis use motives among couples with intimate partner violence and alcohol use disorder

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Cannabis use is highly prevalent among individuals with a history of intimate partner violence (IPV) and among people who drink alcohol. Motives for cannabis use are important correlates of consumption and problem severity. However, no research has examined cannabis use motives among couples with IPV. The goals of the study were to examine (1) the associations between a person and their partner's cannabis use motives; and (2) examine the extent to which each partners' cannabis use motives are related to their own and their partner's cannabis consumption.

METHODS

Participants were 100 couples (n = 92 different-sex couples, n = 8 same-sex couples) who reported physical IPV in their current relationship.

RESULTS

Certain cannabis motives (coping and conformity) and behaviors (cannabis use frequency, quantity and drug-related problems) were positively associated between intimate partners. One's own higher coping motives were associated with greater frequency of cannabis consumption; higher conformity motives were associated with less quantity of consumption; higher social motives were associated with greater quantity of cannabis consumption; and one's partner's social motives were associated with less quantity of cannabis consumption. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that couples report similar motives for cannabis use, and that one's own and their partner's motives may differentially influence frequency and quantity of use.

SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE

This study provides novel information on congruency between cannabis use motives and behaviors between intimate partners, as well as how both an individual and their partner's motives for use can influence an individual's cannabis use behaviors.

Dual-substance use disorder couples: An integrative review and proposed theoretical model

Committed romantic relationships between two individuals with Substance Use Disorder (or dual-SUD couples) are prevalent. Dual-SUD couples have poor treatment engagement and outcomes. Research has established a reciprocal link between relationship dynamics (e.g., conflict, intimacy) and substance use. Thus, the couple's relationship presents a distinct social context for both partner's substance use. Dual-SUD couples face unique challenges due to substance use being a shared behavior that may serve as a rewarding source of compatibility, closeness, and short-term relationship satisfaction despite it being at the cost of other alternative sources of substance-free reinforcement. Yet, treatment options for these couples are scarce. Dual-maladaptive health behaviors (e.g., dual-substance use) are challenging to treat; however, theory and preliminary research suggests that transformation of couple's joint motivation toward adaptive health behavior change may result in a more satisfying relationship and improved treatment outcomes for both individuals. The current paper reviews the extant literature on dual-SUD couples from theoretical, empirical, and treatment research and proposes an expanded paradigm regarding how we understand dual-SUD couples with the aim of informing basic research and treatment development.

Effects of alcohol problem discrepancy on relationship adjustment: The moderating role of conflict negotiation among couples with alcohol use disorder and intimate partner violence

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) has well-known negative effects on romantic relationship functioning, including the occurrence of intimate partner violence (IPV). A separate literature focused on community couples indicates that relationship functioning is more likely to suffer when partners report greater discrepancies in alcohol consumption. It is important to expand this literature to couples with AUD and to examine the role of impactful AUD domains in dyadic functioning. Furthermore, few studies have examined adaptive, treatment-malleable factors that could potentially offset the negative impact of alcohol discrepancies on relationship functioning. This study examined the association between couples' alcohol problem discrepancies and relationship adjustment, as well as the moderating effect of self-reported adaptive conflict negotiation behaviors. Participants were 100 couples (N = 200 individual participants) with intimate partner violence wherein at least one partner met diagnostic criteria for AUD. Actor-Partner Interdependence Models indicated that greater alcohol problem discrepancy was associated with lower dyadic adjustment. Moderation analyses revealed that the highest level of relationship adjustment was observed among couples with lower alcohol problem discrepancy and greater negotiation behaviors, while relationship adjustment was similar for couples with larger alcohol problem discrepancy, regardless of negotiation behaviors. Although further study is needed to clarify under what specific conditions adaptive negotiation behaviors are most helpful, they appear to be beneficial for some couples in this sample. We found no evidence that negotiation behaviors may be harmful among these high-risk couples.

The Dyadic Health Influence Model

Relationship partners affect one another's health outcomes through their health behaviors, yet how this occurs is not well understood. To fill this gap, we present the Dyadic Health Influence Model (DHIM). The DHIM identifies three routes through which a person (the agent) can impact the health beliefs and behavior of their partner (the target). An agent may (a) model health behaviors and shape the shared environment, (b) enact behaviors that promote their relationship, and/or (c) employ strategies to intentionally influence the target's health behavior. A central premise of the DHIM is that agents act based on their beliefs about their partner's health and their relationship. In turn, their actions have consequences not only for targets' health behavior but also for their relationship. We review theoretical and empirical research that provides initial support for the routes and offer testable predictions at the intersection of health behavior change research and relationship science.

Drinking to keep pace: A study of the moderating influence of extraversion on alcohol consumption similarity in drinking buddy dyads

Heavy drinking in college remains a concerning issue due to its association with both health and social risks. While modelling contributes to college students' alcohol use, little work has identified who might be most susceptible to modelling effects. Peterson, Morey, and Higgins (2005) found males high in extraversion were more susceptible than others to matching strangers' drinking levels in a lab-based social drinking context. We sought to replicate and extend these findings by examining the impact of extraversion on social matching of alcohol consumption levels of a drinking buddy in college students' real lives. First, a significant relationship between buddy and target drinking levels was predicted in dyadic drinking situations. Additionally, we hypothesized that target extraversion would positively moderate this buddy- target drinking levels relationship. Data from 149 college student targets (74% F) and their same-sex drinking buddy were collected through online questionnaires examining targets' extraversion levels, and the drinking levels and social drinking context of both dyad members through a 30-day Timeline Followback measure. Linear mixed-effects modelling confirmed the study's first social matching hypothesis, while also revealing that target extraversion positively moderated the relationship between buddy and target daily drinking levels in dyadic drinking contexts. Findings extend those of Peterson et al. (2005) to a real-world (vs. lab-based) context, modelling of a buddy's (vs. stranger's) drinking levels, and a sample including women (vs. all-male). Results provide novel information on extraversion's contributions to modelling of alcohol use that may guide useful modifications to personality-based interventions for reducing college student heavy drinking.

Female informant-reports of male romantic partners' alcohol problems predict escalations in dyadic conflict in heterosexual couples

Alcohol problems are not just an individual concern; they have important negative impacts on romantic relationships. Perceiving one's romantic partner to have an alcohol problem is associated with lower relationship satisfaction and commitment. However, the utility of informant-reports of a partner's alcohol problems in predicting future dyadic conflict remains unknown. Our objective was to test the incremental validity of informant-reports of a partner's alcohol problems in predicting escalations in dyadic conflict over a one-month period beyond the partners' self-reported alcohol problems. One-hundred-eighty-seven opposite-sex couples participated in a one-month longitudinal study involving self- and informant-reports of alcohol problems at baseline and dyadic conflict measures at baseline and one-month follow-up. We hypothesized that, in both sexes, informant-reports of a partner's alcohol problems would predict escalations in dyadic conflict above and beyond the variance explained by self-reports of alcohol problems. This hypothesis was partially supported. Informant-reports of a partners' alcohol problems incrementally predicted future dyadic conflict, but only when women were informants. Women's self-reports of their own alcohol problems also predicted escalations in dyadic conflict whereas men's self-reports did not. Findings suggest that having women report on both their own and their male partners' levels of alcohol-related problems may help identify at-risk couples for early intervention to prevent escalating dyadic conflict. Though self-reported alcohol problems can be accurate, a person's position as expert on his or her alcohol problems can be compromised by biases (e.g., self-deception). Informant-reports may provide a more complete picture of the problem drinker in the romantic relationship context.

Committed relationships and substance use: recent findings and future directions

Recent research on substance use in committed relationships covers three general areas. First, partners tend to be concordant for substance use, and concordance is at least partially the result of partner influence (or convergence). Second, substance use (particularly discrepant use) predicts relationship outcomes such as lower relationship quality and greater conflict, intimate partner aggression, and risky sex. Concordant use, however, can be protective. Finally, relationship variables, such as conflict, intimate partner aggression, and support for cessation, predict substance use. Recent advances in methodological innovation, such as the use of longitudinal designs and dyadic data, are noted. Although the field has moved in some new directions conceptually, the research in this area is still relatively atheoretical. Suggestions for future research directions are discussed.

Alcohol motivations and behaviors during months young adults experience social role transitions: Microtransitions in early adulthood

The study examines how young adult transitions into and out of social roles (i.e., starting or ending a job, a romantic relationship, school) are associated with drinking motives (coping, enhancement, social, and conformity) and alcohol use in a given month. A community sample of young adult drinkers (N = 767; 56.3% female; 59.3% White; Ages 18-23) completed 24 consecutive months of online surveys (N = 15,333 months of data) about the previous month's experiences, social role transitions, and alcohol use. During the 2-year data collection window, participants reported starting/ending a job (10.0%/8.2%), a relationship (2.7%/4.3%), and school (9.2%/17.4%). Between persons, those who more often started jobs were more likely to drink and those who more often ended jobs had higher enhancement motives; those who more often ended relationships were more likely to drink, have a greater number of drinks when drinking, and have higher coping and enhancement motives; and those who more often started relationships had higher conformity motives. Within persons, during months when a relationship ended, participants reported stronger coping motives, and during months when a relationship started, they reported stronger social motives for drinking. During months when a relationship started or ended, participants also reported consuming a greater number of drinks when drinking. There were no differences based on starting or ending school. Young adult social role transitions are associated with concurrent changes in both alcohol use and motives for drinking. Understanding these contextual changes and their concomitant risks is key to providing salient interventions to reduce alcohol-related harm.
