Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to explore the impact of childhood hearing loss on the family unit and their resulting intervention needs. MATERIALS & METHODS Qualitative descriptive methodology was used, with in-depth interviews analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Four family units of children with hearing loss participated in the study, including parents (n = 5), grandparents (n = 7), and siblings (n = 5). RESULTS Five themes were developed from interview data: (1) the daily grind; (2) we're all in this together; (3) family dynamics; (4) the early intervention experience and (5) personal growth and adaptations. Family members were impacted in multi-faceted ways and identified informational and emotional intervention needs, with an integrative theme highlighting the emotional toll of childhood hearing loss on families. CONCLUSIONS Early intervention services have a crucial role in addressing third-party disability through a multi-disciplinary service delivery model that addresses the needs of all family members, beyond the child with hearing loss.

Abstract
This study examined the relationship between parental self-efficacy in parents of young deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children and children's spoken language skills. A retrospective within-subjects study design was used that included 24 mother-child dyads with DHH children. Parental self-efficacy was assessed using the Scale of Parental Involvement and Self-Efficacy-Revised. Children's language abilities were assessed using the Preschool Language Scale-5th edition. Our data revealed no significant associations between global measures of parental self-efficacy and children's auditory comprehension, expressive communication, and total language scores. However, positive correlations were found between child language skills and specific parents' beliefs about their ability to support their child's spoken language development, their ability to use strategies to help their child communicate, and their active involvement in intervention. Findings highlight the importance of examining discrete aspects of parental self-efficacy as it specifically relates to parents supporting their DHH child's spoken language development. Future directions and implications are provided.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Parents of children diagnosed with severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss may experience a range of emotions owing to a lack of knowledge and experience in dealing with such children. However, most audiology clinics only attend to children with deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) and not their parents. Thus, parents' emotional and support needs are frequently excluded from the intervention sessions, making their own needs invisible. This study aimed to identify academic and clinical instruments used for assessing parental emotional status (PES) and ecological support systems (ESS) in early intervention and determine the factors affecting PES and ESS among parents of DHH children undergoing cochlear implantation. MATERIALS AND METHODS This scoping review followed the rigorous methodological framework; searched Medline (via OVID and EMBSCO), Scopus, and Web of Science; and selected studies relevant to validated instruments used to evaluate the PES and ESS among parents of DHH children below 6 years old. Before selecting and reviewing relevant articles, two reviewers independently assessed article titles and abstracts from the data sources. Two reviewers verified half of the first reviewer's extracted data. RESULTS Overall, 3060 articles were retrieved from the database search, and 139 were selected for full-text review following title and abstract reviews. Ultimately, this study included 22 articles. Among them, 23 and 12 validated instruments, most of which are generic measures, were used for assessing PES and ESS, respectively. Three condition-specific instruments were identified and designed to be administered following cochlear implantation surgery. CONCLUSIONS This study revealed that healthcare professionals who interact with parents of DHH children lack the necessary instruments, particularly for parents of children undergoing cochlear implantation surgery. Therefore, it is necessary to develop condition-specific instruments for parents who consider cochlear implantation for their children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Stress levels among caregivers of children with hearing loss could influence caregiver-child interactions and ultimately, children's developmental outcomes. Given the limited understanding of stress levels among caregivers of Australian children with hearing loss, the present study aimed to examine stress in caregivers of 5-year-old children with hearing loss wearing hearing aids or cochlear implants and to identify factors associated with greater stress levels. METHODS A total of 99 caregivers of 70 hearing aid users and 29 cochlear implant users participated in the study. Caregivers' stress was measured using the 68-item Pediatric Hearing Impairment Caregiver Experience (PHICE) questionnaire that examines caregivers' context-specific stress levels in relation to caring for a child with hearing loss. Factors contributing to stress were identified in relation to eight domains including communication, education, emotional well-being, equipment, financial, healthcare, social, and support. RESULTS Across domains, the three most common predictors of increased stress were the use of cochlear implants over hearing aids, use of sign and oral language (mixed) over oral language as the communication mode at home, and increased behavioural difficulties of the child. CONCLUSION Overall, reported stress levels among Australian caregivers were low. Identified factors influencing stress levels can inform service provision improvement.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the strategies that speech-language pathologists (SLPs) use during their linguistic interventions on children with cochlear implants (CIs). The sample comprised 7 SLPs in interactions with 62 children, 31 with CIs and 31 with typical hearing (TH), from 5 to 7 years of age. Two linguistic activities were used: conversation and naming. With children with CIs, the SLPs used 3.8 times more adaptation strategies and 5 times more educational strategies in the conversation activity, and 1.4 times more educational strategies in the naming activity than with children with TH. Communication strategies were significantly more frequent in the conversation activity than in the naming activity while educational strategies were more frequent in the naming activity than in the conversation activity. The auditory age of children with CIs also influenced the use of these two types of strategies, increasing the use of communication strategies by 0.6% and decreasing the use of educational strategies by 1.2% for each month of increase in the auditory age. In order to foster linguistic development, the SLPs used a wide variety of strategies with the children with CIs, adjusting them to the activity and the auditory age.

Abstract
Introduction Hearing parents of deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) children may experience parenting stress and social support could be a buffer to this stress. Differences in levels of these two indicators may exist between mothers and fathers. This study focuses on the parenting stress and social support needs of mothers and fathers of DHH children. Methods Twenty-seven French parental couples of DHH children completed the Parenting Stress Index and the Family Needs Survey, a questionnaire on social support needs. Results Their overall stress scores showed no difference, but subdomain scores show that mothers and fathers are more stressed by the child's hyperactivity, and fathers by the child's adaptability, than parents of children with normal hearing. Mothers are more stressed than fathers by role restriction; they feel less free because of their parenting role. Fathers have a lower quality of attachment to their child than mothers. Parents have a high social support need, especially for obtaining information about their child's individual characteristics and health situation. The ranking of mothers and fathers in the top 10 needs reveals different needs profiles. Parenting stress profiles show that mothers and fathers with higher-than-normal stress levels have a greater overall need for social support than mothers and fathers with lower than normal stress levels. Discussion This study highlights the value of assessing parenting stress and social support needs in parents of DHH children for a better understanding of their situation in research and its clinical implications, as well as the importance of differentiating outcomes for mothers and fathers.

Abstract
Attachment and resilience are crucial in parent-child interaction. In this study, we investigated the effect of a mindful parenting program on the attachment of deaf children and the resilience of their hearing mothers. The present study was a semi-randomized controlled trial design. Thirty mothers with deaf children were randomly selected from Deaf School in Tehran, Iran. They were randomly assigned to intervention (n = 15) and control (n = 15) groups. The intervention group participated in an eight-session mindful parenting program, while the control group did not participate in this program. Both groups completed the Kinship Center Attachment Questionnaire and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale before and after the intervention. The data were analyzed using the repeated measures analysis of variance test. The results showed that the intervention significantly and positively influenced the attachment of deaf children and resilience in their mothers in the post-test, and the persistence of this effect was maintained in the follow-up stage (p < .001). This study suggests that mindful parenting can promote attachment of deaf children and resilience in their mothers. In addition, the mothers attested to the social validity of the program.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to measure how parent concern about childhood hearing loss varies under different description conditions: classification-based, audibility-based, and simulation-based descriptions. METHOD We randomly allocated study participants (n = 143) to complete an online survey about expected child difficulties with listening situations with hearing loss. Our participants were parents of children with typical hearing in the 0- to 12-month age range. Participants were exposed to one type of description (classification-based, audibility-based, or simulation-based) and one level of hearing loss (slight, mild, and moderate or their audibility and simulation equivalents), producing nine total groups. Participants rated the level of expected difficulty their child would experience performing age-appropriate listening tasks with the given hearing loss. They also selected what they perceived as the most appropriate intervention from a list of increasingly intense options. RESULTS Our findings revealed that audibility-based descriptions elicited significantly higher levels of parent concerns about hearing loss than classification-based strategies, but that simulation-based descriptions elicited the highest levels of concern. Those assigned to simulation-based and audibility-based groups also judged relatively more intense intervention options as appropriate compared to those assigned to classification-based groups. CONCLUSIONS This study expands our knowledge base about descriptive factors that impact levels of parent concern about hearing loss after diagnosis. This has potentially cascading effects on later intervention actions such as fitting hearing technology. It also provides a foundation for developing and testing clinical applications of audibility-based counseling strategies.

Abstract
PURPOSE Responsive and dynamic aspects of father-child play are associated with behavioral and neurocognitive development in children and could represent an important contributor to executive function (EF) skills for children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). This study examined associations between paternal behaviors during play and EF skills of DHH children and children with typical hearing (TH). METHOD Father-child dyads in families with DHH children (n = 30) and TH children (n = 29) participated in a 15-min video-recorded free-play session that was coded for parental behaviors using Parent-Child Interaction Rating Scales and Rough and Tumble Play Quality. Families also completed an age-appropriate version of the Behavior Rating Index of Executive Function as a measure of child EF. RESULTS DHH children were rated as having significantly more everyday difficulties with working memory than TH children. Fathers of DHH children were rated as more intrusive during play than fathers of TH children; however, there were no other differences between paternal groups on coded dimensions of father child play. Paternal respect for child autonomy was associated with fewer child difficulties with planning and organization skills and paternal play engagement was associated with fewer child EF difficulties. Moderation analyses revealed that paternal sensitivity was associated with more working memory difficulties and paternal respect for child autonomy was associated with fewer working memory difficulties for DHH children only. CONCLUSIONS Paternal play could be an important environmental context for DHH outcomes. Fathers supporting independent play might generally support EF. Paternal engagement in play might also benefit EF. Results highlight paternal behavioral attributes that could lead to potential father-embedded intervention models.

Abstract
Introduction Parenting a child with hearing loss may be accompanied by high stress levels and several challenges. Objectives The present systematic review was performed to compile the existing literature pertaining to parental stress in parents of children with hearing loss and coping strategies. Data synthesis The databases searched include PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Cochrane Library and Cumulative Index to Nursing, and Allied Health Literature. The systematic review was designed and performed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses statement guidelines. The screening for studies was performed independently by two researchers. Methodological quality appraisal was done using the Mixed methods appraisal tool. Twenty-eight studies were identified and included in the present review, which discussed the stress factors and coping mechanism associated with having child with hearing loss reported by parents. The factors leading to stress were thematically classified into parent/family-related factors, child-related factors, and professionals/service-related factors. The coping strategies were thematically classified into improved support systems and better professional resources. Conclusion The present systematic review was an attempt at exploring the various stress causing factors among parents of children with hearing loss. The various coping strategies would help in better planning services for these parents and helping to lessen the stress.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to gather the views and experiences of clinicians and managers on early intervention audiology and speech-language pathology services for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) families of children with hearing loss. METHOD This qualitative descriptive study involved 27 semistructured interviews with audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and managers working with CALD families of young children with hearing loss. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit participants from three hearing centers working with these families. Interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. RESULTS Analysis of the data resulted in five themes: (a) There were perceived added complexities for CALD families in accessing and being involved in services and receiving information; (b) there were perceived family-provider relationship complexities, cultural differences, and service delivery challenges in working with CALD families; (c) clinicians and managers used various strategies for service provision of CALD families; (d) involving interpreters benefited service provision but was challenging at times; and (e) looking to the future and recommendations for clinical practice. CONCLUSIONS Current practices reflect some principles of family-centered care for CALD families of young children with hearing loss. Families and services may benefit from more support regarding family-provider partnerships, information materials and child assessments, working with interpreters, and center support for time and resources. Abstract
BACKGROUND Family-centered early intervention (FCEI) for children with hearing loss (HL) supports caregivers to promote their children's language development. To provide FCEI services that are relevant and accessible to meet diverse needs, insight into the characteristics of children with HL is important. In the current study, various characteristics of children with HL and intervention-related factors are examined in relation to spoken language outcomes. METHODS Child and family characteristics, language outcomes and data on intervention were extracted from FCEI records for 83 children. Family involvement ratings were obtained from EI providers. Relations between characteristics, intervention, family involvement and language outcomes were analyzed and predictors for children's language outcomes were investigated. RESULTS The characteristics of children with HL in FCEI are very diverse. Family involvement and the occurrence of additional disabilities were predictive for children's receptive and expressive language abilities; the start of FCEI was not. Maternal education was predictive for expressive language outcomes only. CONCLUSIONS The current study showed the diversity in characteristics of children with HL and their families in the degree of HL, etiology, cultural background, home language, family involvement and additional disabilities. We conclude that 'one size does not fit all', and FCEI programs should acknowledge the unique strengths and challenges of every individual family.

Abstract
This study examined how deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH) and typically hearing (TH) children may differ in their family system and emotional functioning and examined the relations between family system and children's emotional functioning. Parents of 106 DHH and 99 TH children (2-6 years) reported on family cohesion and adaptability, parental emotion communication, and their child's emotional functioning. The DHH children were rated lower on family cohesion and positive emotion expression than the TH children. Higher levels of family cohesion related to more positive emotion expression in TH children but not in DHH children. For all children, higher levels of family cohesion related to fewer negative emotion expressions and more parental emotion communication related to more negative emotion expression. The results emphasize the importance of sharing leisure activities together and open communication within the family, which can support DHH and TH children's experience of emotions and their expressions of them.

Abstract
Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is the most frequent sex chromosome aneuploidy in males. KS diagnosis disclosure has an important impact on diagnosis acceptance and the increase in prenatal diagnostic procedures raises questions regarding communication to children/adolescents. Limited data are currently available on this issue. The aim of the study was to investigate aspects like the best timing (when), topics (how), and healthcare professional (who), which, in the opinion of both KS patients and parents, may be considered the best for diagnosis communication to KS children/adolescents. We also analyzed how participants received the communication in real life and evaluated the differences between the responses given by parents who receive KS diagnosis before or after KS patient birth regarding disclosure of KS communication. KS adult patients, KS mothers, and KS fathers, not belonging to the same family, completed a questionnaire containing quantitative measures (5 points Likert scale), open-ended questions, and multiple choice questions. Parental responses were divided according to the timing at which the communication occurred: prenatal age diagnosis (PRE-D) or postnatal age diagnosis (POST-D). A total of 41 KS adults and 77 KS parents (53 PRE-D, 24 POST-D) were recruited. Most KS patients and most POST-D parents consider that communication should be provided before 14 years of age; most PRE-D parents consider 14–18 years of age the best period for communication. We suggest that communication should occur preferably before 18 years of age by a multidisciplinary team (endocrinologists, psychologists, geneticists, and parents) and that the information should deal not only fertility and hormonal aspects but also metabolic and cognitive features.

Abstract
Parenting stress has deleterious effects on parents, children, and overall family functioning. Parents of children with intellectual disability, including Down Syndrome (DS), show higher levels of parenting stress than parents of typically developing children. This research aimed to (i) evaluate parenting stress levels in a group of mothers of youths with DS using a parent-report questionnaire, (ii) identify children’s individual and clinical features associated with maternal stress, and (iii) identify specific situational life/demographics factors related to maternal stress. Seventy-eight youths with DS underwent a neuropsychological evaluation, whereas mothers completed questionnaires for the assessment of parenting stress and of the child’s emotional and behavioral problems. We found that Parent–Child Difficult Interaction was the domain with the highest percentage of clinical scores (39.7%). Both internalizing and externalizing problems correlated with maternal stress, as well as autistic symptoms. The levels of maternal stress were not associated with any socio-demographic variable. After controlling for child-related correlates of maternal stress and for mothers’ age and education level, unemployed mothers exhibited higher levels of parental distress than employed mothers. The present study highlights that unemployment is related with parenting stress and potentially amenable to policy interventions supporting parents in combining work and family care.

Abstract
(1) Background: Studies related to family-centered early intervention (FCEI) for children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) have largely focused on mothers, at the exclusion of fathers. Yet, understanding fathers’ experiences with FCEI is also important and may inform service delivery. The present study explores self-efficacy and involvement with FCEI in both fathers and mothers. (2) Methods: Dutch fathers and mothers completed questionnaires about their parental self-efficacy, involvement in FCEI, perceived support from their primary EI provider, and the impact of raising a child who is DHH on parenting. (3) Results: Both fathers and mothers reported relatively high levels of self-efficacy. Mothers reported higher levels than fathers on some domains of self-efficacy and tended to be more involved in their child’s FCEI than fathers. In fathers, but not mothers, higher levels of self-efficacy were related to higher levels of involvement and higher levels of perceived support. (4) Conclusions: Similarities and differences were found between fathers and mothers in their perspectives on self-efficacy and involvement. This points to potential differences related to their FCEI needs. EI providers need to address both the needs of fathers and mothers to promote optimal development among child who are DHH.

Abstract
Much of the literature exploring the role of parents of children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) has focused on mothers; yet, the involvement and perspectives of fathers is valuable and warrants attention. Following the PRISMA guidelines, this systematic literature review examined the peer-reviewed research that has differentially explored the experiences of fathers and mothers of young DHH children. Utilizing three databases (Web of Science, PsychINFO, Scopus) and spanning 50 years (1969-2019), 457 non-duplicated articles were identified that included the fathers of DHH children, birth to six years. Independent review of the titles, abstracts, and keywords by the authors limited these to 119. Full manuscripts were assessed for eligibility; 37 were deemed appropriate for inclusion in this systematic review. The papers included have been organized into the following themes: perspectives on parenting, parental stress and coping, parent-child interaction, involvement in early intervention, parental self-efficacy, and benefits of fathers' inclusion. Recommendations for future research include: (a) actively recruiting fathers in research, (b) differentially analyzing fathers' and mothers' experiences in research studies, (c) using information gleaned from research regarding father-child and mother-child interactions to guide interventions/programming, (d) recognizing the bidirectional influences of fathers and their DHH children, (e) moving beyond descriptive studies to explore fathers' influences on child outcomes, and (f) recognizing diverse family constellations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maternal post-partum depression is one of the most common medical complications around childbirth. One of its consequences is a possible association with children's receipt of preventive health care, including immunization. This study aimed to explore the association between maternal postpartum depression and children's immunization rates. METHODS A retrospective cohort study of Maccabi Healthcare Services (HMO) members comparing immunization rates between children born between 2006 and 2019 to mothers with post-partum depression and children born to mothers with no documented depression. Post-partum depression was assessed by Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, a 10-item questionnaire considered the screening tool of choice in Israel for early Post-partum detection. 1:1 matching was conducted according to criteria: age of the mother ± 2 years, child's year of birth, the newborn baby's gender, the baby's birth order and socioeconomic index. The primary outcome was defined as non-vaccination and the exposure was defined as depression. A sub-analysis was performed, comparing immunization rates of children born to mothers treated with antidepressant medications to rates of children born to untreated mothers. RESULTS A total of 709 subjects in the exposed cohort (children born to mothers with post-partum depression symptoms) and 681 subjects in the matched cohort were analyzed. The relative risks among children born to depressed mothers compared with children born to healthy mothers for not receiving any vaccine at 2 months, three doses of pertussis vaccine up to 7 months and four doses of DTaP-Hib-IPV vaccine up to 18 months were 1.15 (95% CI 0.74-1.78), 1.11 (95% CI 0.94-1.31) and 0.82 (95% CI 0.56-1.95), respectively. The relative risks among 139 infants born to treated mothers compared with 570 infants born to untreated mothers for not receiving any vaccine at 2 months, three doses of pertussis vaccine up to 7 months and four doses of DTaP-Hib-IPV vaccine up to 18 months were 1.28 (0.64-2.54), 0.78 (0.57-1.06) and 0.42 (0.17-1.03), respectively. CONCLUSION We found no significant association between maternal post-partum depression and uptake of child Immunization.

Abstract
Background: Resilience has become a hot spot in the field of positive psychology to study life-change events. However, there were little information on resilience among the fathers and mothers of patients with cleft lip and/or palate respectively. The present study aimed to explore and compare the level and potential influential factors associated with resilience among fathers/mothers of patients with cleft lip and/or palate in China. Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out between April 2019 and July 2020 among fathers/mothers of patients with cleft lip and/or palate in two cleft lip and/or palate treatment centers in China. Sixty Nine fathers and 179 mothers of patients with cleft lip and/or palate were interviewed with a questionnaire on demographic variables and the Resilience Scale-14 (RS-14), Herth Hope Index (HHI), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), Revised Life Orientation Test (LOT-R), Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF) and Coping Health Inventory for Parents (CHIP). T-test/univariate one-way ANOVA, Pearson's r, hierarchical linear regression analysis were conducted to explore the influential factors of resilience. Results: Fathers of patients with cleft lip and/or palate had a higher level of resilience (77.77 ± 14.18) than mothers (74.52 ± 14.33) though without significance. Resilience was positively associated with hope, perceived social support, optimism and coping and negatively correlated with parenting stress both in the fathers and the mothers. Hierarchical linear regression analysis showed that hope (β = 0.400, P < 0.01), coping (β = 0.281, P < 0.05), job status, medical payments (β = -0.240, P < 0.05) were found to be associated with resilience among the fathers of patients with CL/P, and all four variables in the model could explain 42.8% of the variance in resilience; Hope (β = 0.225, P < 0.05), perceived social support (β = 0.194, P < 0.05), the age of patients (β = 0.189, P < 0.05) were found to be associated with resilience among the mothers, and all three variables in the model could explain 27.6% of the variance in resilience. Conclusion: Our study showed that, in China, fathers of patients with cleft lip and/or palate had a higher level of resilience than mothers though without significance. Hope was the only communal variable strongly associated with resilience among both the fathers and the mothers; besides, coping, job status and medical payments were found to be associated with resilience among the fathers; while perceived social support and the age of patients were found to be associated with resilience among the mothers. The results suggest that enhance hope in parents of patients with cleft lip and/or palate might greatly help improve their resilience. Besides, fathers and mothers need specific intervention to prompt their resilience.

Abstract
The objective of the current study was to investigate possible differences in word count use per day (number of adult words) by caregivers of different gender, in a sample of Norwegian children (N = 17) with hearing impairment (HI) (n = 8) and normal hearing (NH) (n = 9), aged 18-56 months. The current study had a cross-sectional, descriptive study design. One all-day recording with the LENA technology was conducted to measure adult word use in the home environment (Md length: 12.46 h, 9.13-16 h). Female caregivers used a significantly higher amount of words than male caregivers close to the children, regardless of their hearing status, HI: p = .01, NH: p = .01. All children were exposed to a higher number of adult words from female caregivers. There is a need to conduct more and further research about possible caregiver differences, and investigate not only the quantity of word use, but also the qualitative interaction patterns between caregivers of different gender and young children with HI, and in relation to early intervention actions.

Abstract
Parental involvement is vital to the implementation of intervention programs for deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children. The current study examined the dyadic relationships between mothers' and fathers' coping resources and their involvement in their child's intervention program. In addition, the moderating roles of parent's gender and family religiosity on the associations between coping resources and involvement were examined. Seventy Jewish couples of parents of DHH children, representing various levels of religiosity, completed questionnaires regarding involvement in their child's intervention program, child acceptance, parental self-efficacy, and perceived social support. Multilevel modeling analyses were used to test actor-partner interdependence. The findings indicated significant actor effects for child acceptance, parental self-efficacy, and social support. All were positively associated with parental involvement. Gender was found to moderate the actor effect of child acceptance. Partner effects were found only for mothers, for child acceptance, and social support. Fathers' child acceptance and social support were negatively associated with mothers' involvement. Religiosity did not moderate neither actor nor partner effects. These results have important implications for planning intervention programs that are sensitive to each of the parent's needs.
