Some Histological and Physiological Features of Avian Kidney

Histological changes in the kidney and liver associated with administration of ethylene glycol in domestic pigeons (Columba liviadomestica )

In order to illustrate the histological changes in kidney and liver associated with water drinking of ethylene glycol (EG) in domestic pigeons (Columba liviadomestica), 24 adult birds, weighing 350- 400 grams, aged 9-12 months were used, for the period from 5/2/2021- 16/3/2021 at Diyala University - College of Veterinary Medicine. They divided into two equal groups. One group control and other group gives EG with water at concentration 8.5ml/L for three weeks. Histological results illustrated normal structures of kidney and liver in the domestic pigeons of control group. It was observed histological alteration in both organs in the group which received EG such as degeneration of tubular epithelium, cellular infiltration, congestion in kidney, while detect increase inflammatory cell, degeneration, and precipitated materials in the lumen of central vein in liver. It concluded that the EG causes toxic injury to the renal and hepatic tissue in domestic pigeons.

Structure of the gonoduct of the viviparous teleost Cnesterodon decemmaculatus (Jenyns, 1842) (Poeciliidae)

During embryogenesis, teleost females do not develop Müllerian ducts, which form the oviducts in all other vertebrates. Thus, when they reach sexual maturity they do not have oviducts. In viviparous teleosts, the lack of oviducts means that the development of the embryos occurs as an intraovarian gestation, unique among vertebrates. The ovary is an unpaired hollow organ whose cavity is continuous with the caudal portion, the gonoduct, characterized by the absence of germinal cells, which opens to the exterior at the gonopore. The gonoduct attains essential function as a barrier between the germinal region of the ovary and the exterior during all reproductive stages. This study describes the functional morphology of the gonoduct in the viviparous teleost Cnesterodon decemmaculatus during non-gestation (previtellogenesis and vitellogenesis) and gestation. The ovaries were processed using histological techniques and stained with hematoxylin-eosin, and periodic acid Schiff. The gonoduct has two regions: cephalic and caudal, and is formed by three histological layers, which are, from inside to the periphery: (a) tunica mucosa; (b) tunica muscularis; and (c) tunica serosa. In the cephalic region there are mucosal folds extending into the lumen and forming a structure similar to a cervix. The histology of the gonoduct indicates essential functions, that is, (a) the control of the luminal diameter in the limit to the germinal region of the ovary by the presence of a cervix; (b) during insemination the gonoduct receives the spermatozoa, may store and transport them to the germinal region; (c) the presence of melano-macrophage centers indicates support of immunological processes, especially during gestation when these centers increase in size; (d) production of exocrine secretions; and (e) it is the birth canal, internally lined by an ciliated epithelium and surrounded by smooth musclesboth tissues supposedly supporting the birth process.

Effect of sex on histological and histochemical structures of different parts of the kidney in Japanese quail

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of gender on the histological and histochemical structures of different anatomical regions of the kidney in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). Tissue samples from cranial, middle and caudal divisions of each kidney were obtained from 20 male and 20 female adult, healthy Japanese quail. The sections stained with hematoxylin & eosin ( H & E: ), Masson's trichrome, Verhoeff's, Alcian blue (pH 2.5), Periodic acid-Schiff, and Gomori's method for reticulum. Unusual findings of the kidney in Japanese quail were the presence of three types of nephrons, all the connective tissue fibers in capsule and interlobular septa and AB-reactions of the proximal convoluted cells. No significant sex-based differences were found. The various histological structures of the kidney showed no significant differences among different divisions of the left and right kidneys. It is concluded that the general histological and histochemical properties of the kidney in Japanese quail were similar to those of chickens and some other species, but that there were also some differences. One of the major differences was brush border of interdigitating microvilli on luminal surface of collecting ducts in Japanese quail.
