Abstract
The absolute configuration and stability of two thianthrene chiral sulfoxides has been determined by means of X-ray single-crystal structure determinations. The analyses and configurations allow verification that the diastereomeric sulfoxides are stable in solution and are not interconverting, which has been suggested in some studies of sulfoxides. The two thianthrene sulfoxides have slightly different Rf values, which allowed their separation using flash chromatography on silica. The spots run back-to-back, which posed a challenge for their separation. The pure, separated compounds in solution remain as separate, single spots on a Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) plate.

Abstract
Heterogenized metalloporphyrin catalysts for oxidation reactions are extensively explored to improve chemical production. In this work, manganese meso-tetraarylporphyrins were immobilized on hydrated mesoporous titanium dioxide (SBET = 705 m2 g−1) through carboxylate or phosphonate anchoring groups separated from the macrocycle by the 2-arylimidazole linker fused across one of the pyrrolic rings of the macrocycle. The element composition of two mesoporous hybrid materials thus obtained were investigated and the integrity of the immobilized complexes was shown by different physicochemical methods. Finally, the catalytic efficiency of the more stable material Mn(TMPIP)/TiO2 with the phosphonate anchor was evaluated in the selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides by molecular oxygen in the presence of isobutyraldehyde (IBA). The heterogenized complex has shown excellent catalytic activity exhibiting a turnover (TON) of ~1100 in a single catalytic run of the sulfoxidation of thioanisole. The catalyst was successfully reused in seven consecutive catalytic cycles.

Abstract
The purpose of this review is to highlight the necessity of conducting tests to gauge the magnitude of the self-disproportionation of enantiomers (SDE) phenomenon to ensure the veracity of reported enantiomeric excess (ee) values for scalemic samples obtained from enantioselective reactions, natural products isolation, etc. The SDE always occurs to some degree whenever any scalemic sample is subjected to physicochemical processes concomitant with the fractionation of the sample, thus leading to erroneous reporting of the true ee of the sample if due care is not taken to either preclude the effects of the SDE by measurement of the ee prior to the application of physicochemical processes, suppressing the SDE, or evaluating all obtained fractions of the sample. Or even avoiding fractionation altogether if possible. There is a clear necessity to conduct tests to assess the magnitude of the SDE for the processes applied to samples and the updated and improved recommendations described herein cover chromatography and processes involving gas-phase transformations such as evaporation or sublimation.

Abstract
A series of β-d-glucopyranosyl derivates have been synthesized and evaluated in photooxidation reactions promoted by visible light and mediated by organic dyes under aerobic conditions. Among the different photocatalysts employed, tetra-O-acetyl riboflavin afforded chemoselectively the respective sulfoxides, without over-oxidation to sulfones, in good to excellent yields and short reaction times. This new methodology for the preparation of synthetically useful glycosyl sulfoxides constitutes a catalytic, efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly oxidation process not reported so far for carbohydrates.

Abstract
Chiral sulfoxides are in extremely high demand in nearly every sector of the chemical industry concerned with the design and development of new synthetic reagents, drugs, and functional materials. The primary objective of this review is to update readers on the latest developments from the past five years (2011-2016) in the preparation of optically active sulfoxides. Methodologies covered include catalytic asymmetric sulfoxidation using either chemical, enzymatic, or hybrid biocatalytic means; kinetic resolution involving oxidation to sulfones, reduction to sulfides, modification of side chains, and imidation to sulfoximines; as well as various other methods including nucleophilic displacement at the sulfur atom for the desymmetrization of achiral sulfoxides, enantioselective recognition and separation based on either metal-organic frameworks (MOF's) or host-guest chemistry, and the Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction. A second goal of this work concerns a critical discussion of the problem of the accurate determination of the stereochemical outcome of a reaction due to the self-disproportionation of enantiomers (SDE) phenomenon, particularly as it relates to chiral sulfoxides. The SDE is a little-appreciated phenomenon that can readily and spontaneously occur for scalemic samples when subjected to practically any physicochemical process. It has now been unequivocally demonstrated that ignorance in the SDE phenomenon inevitably leads to erroneous interpretation of the stereochemical outcome of catalytic enantioselective reactions, in particular, for the synthesis of chiral sulfoxides. It is hoped that this two-pronged approach to covering the chemistry of chiral sulfoxides will be appealing, engaging, and motivating for current research-active authors to respond to in their future publications in this exciting area of current research.

Abstract
A cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (P450SMO) from Rhodococcus sp. can catalyze asymmetric oxygenation of sulfides to S-sulfoxides. However, P450SMO-catalyzed biotransformations require a constant supply of NAD(P)H, the expense of which constitutes a great hindrance for this enzyme application. In this study, we investigated the asymmetric oxygenation of sulfide to S-sulfoxide using E. coli cells, which co-express both the P450SMO gene from Rhodococcus sp. and the glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) gene from Bacillus subtilis, as a catalyst. The results showed that the catalytic performance of co-expression systems was markedly improved compared to the system lacking GDH. When using recombinant E. coli BL21 (pET28a-P450-GDH) whole cell as a biocatalyst, NADPH was efficiently regenerated when glucose was supplemented in the reaction system. A total conversion of 100% was achieved within 12 h with 2 mM p-chlorothioanisole substrate, affording 317.3 mg/L S-sulfoxide obtained. When the initial sulfide concentration was increased to 5 mM, the substrate conversion was also increased nearly fivefold: S-sulfoxide amounted to 2.5 mM (396.6 mg/L) and the ee value of sulfoxide product exceeded 98%. In this system, the effects of glucose concentration and substrate concentration were further investigated for efficient biotransformation. This system is highly advantageous for the synthesis of optically pure S-sulfoxide.

Sequence analysis and heterologous expression of a new cytochrome P450 monooxygenase from Rhodococcus sp. for asymmetric sulfoxidation. Appl Microbiol Biotechnol 2009; 85:615-24. Abstract
In this study, a 3.7-kb DNA fragment was cloned from Rhodococcus sp. ECU0066, and the sequence was analyzed. It was revealed that the largest one (2,361 bp) of this gene fragment encodes a protein consisting of 787 amino acids, with 73% identity to P450RhF (accession number AF45924) from Rhodococcus sp. NCIMB 9784. The gene of this new P450 monooxygenase (named as P450SMO) was successfully expressed in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3), and the enzyme was also purified and characterized. In the presence of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate, the enzyme showed significant sulfoxidation activity towards several sulfides, with (S)-sulfoxides as the predominant product. The p-chlorothioanisole, p-fluorothioanisole, p-tolyl methyl sulfide, and p-methoxythioanisole showed relatively higher activities than the other sulfides, but the stereoselectivity for p-methoxythioanisole was much lower. The optimal activity of the purified enzyme toward p-chlorothioanisole occurred at pH 7.0 and 30 degrees C. The current study is the first to report a recombinant cytochrome P450 enzyme of Rhodococcus sp. which is responsible for the asymmetric oxidation of sulfides. The new enzymatic activity of P450SMO on the above compounds makes it an attractive biocatalyst for asymmetric synthesis of enantiopure sulfoxides.

Abstract
Aminoglycoside-coenzyme A conjugates are challenging synthetic targets because of the wealth of functional groups and high polarity of the starting materials. We previously reported a one-pot synthesis of amide-linked aminoglycoside-CoA bisubstrates. These molecules are nanomolar inhibitors of aminoglycoside N-6'-acetyltransferase Ii (AAC(6')-Ii), an important enzyme involved in bacterial resistance to aminoglycoside antibiotics. We report here the synthesis and biological activity of five new aminoglycoside-CoA bisubstrates containing sulfonamide, sulfoxide, or sulfone groups. Interestingly, the sulfonamide-linked bisubstrate, which was expected to best mimic the tetrahedral intermediate, does not show improved inhibition when compared with amide-linked bisubstrates. On the other hand, most of the sulfone- and sulfoxide-containing bisubstrates prepared are nanomolar inhibitors of AAC(6')-Ii.

Abstract
A new and efficient sulfide monooxygenase-producing strain, ECU0066, was isolated and identified as a Rhodococcus sp. that could transform phenylmethyl sulfide (PMS) to (S)-sulfoxide with 99% enantiomeric excess via two steps of enantioselective oxidations. Its enzyme activity could be effectively induced by adding PMS or phenylmethyl sulfoxide (PMSO) directly to a rich medium at the early log phase (6 h) of fermentation, resulting in over 10-times-higher production of the enzyme. This bacterial strain also displayed fairly good activity and enantioselectivity toward seven other sulfides, indicating a good potential for practical application in asymmetric synthesis of chiral sulfoxides.

Abstract
The oxidation of diethyl and diphenyl sulfide photosensitized by dicyanoanthracene (DCA), N-methylquinolinium tetrafluoroborate (NMQ(+)), and triphenylpyrylium tetrafluoroborate (TPP(+)) has been explored by steady-state and laser flash photolysis studies in acetonitrile, methanol, and 1,2-dichloroethane. In the Et(2)S/DCA system sulfide-enhanced intersystem crossing leads to generation of (1)O(2), which eventually gives the sulfoxide via a persulfoxide; this mechanism plays no role with Ph(2)S, though enhanced formation of (3)DCA has been demonstrated. In all other cases an electron-transfer (ET) mechanism is involved. Electron-transfer sulfoxidation occurs with efficiency essentially independent of the sulfide structure, is subject to quenching by benzoquinone, and does not lead to Ph(2)SO cooxidation. Formation of the radical cations R(2)S(*+) has been assessed by flash photolysis (medium-dependent yield, dichloroethane>>CH(3)CN>CH(3)OH) and confirmed by quenching with 1,4-dimethoxybenzene. Electron-transfer oxidations occur both when the superoxide anion is generated by the reduced sensitizer (DCA(*-), NMQ(*)) and when this is not the case (TPP(*)). Although it is possible that different mechanisms operate with different ET sensitizers, a plausible unitary mechanism can be proposed. This considers that reaction between R(2)S(*+) and O(2)(*-) mainly involves back electron transfer, whereas sulfoxidation results primarily from the reaction of the sulfide radical cation with molecular oxygen. Calculations indeed show that the initially formed fleeting complex RS(2)(+)...O-O(*) adds to a sulfide molecule and gives strongly stabilized R(2)S-O(*)-(+)O-SR(2) via an accessible transition state. This intermediate gives the sulfoxide, probably via a radical cation chain path. This mechanism explains the larger scope of ET sulfoxidation with respect to the singlet-oxygen process.

Abstract
Soil samples were screened to select microorganisms with the capability to oxidize organic sulfides into the corresponding sulfoxides with differential enantioselectivities. Several bacterial strains that preferentially produced the S-configured sulfoxide enantiomer were isolated. Surprisingly, one bacterial strain, genotypically and phenotypically characterized as Pseudomonas frederiksbergensis, selectively gave the R enantiomer. The finding that two apparently identical organisms displayed opposite enantioselectivities is novel for non-genetically modified organisms.

Abstract
A mild, selective, and high-yielding method for oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides using IBX and tetraethylammonium bromide in a variety of solvents is described. The method offers the advantage of short reaction times, no over-oxidation to sulfones, and compatibility to a wide range of functional groups.
