Review of the ecotoxicological effects of emerging contaminants to soil biota

Emerging organic contaminants in the soil-plant-receptor continuum: transport, fate, health risks, and removal mechanisms

There is a lack of comprehensive reviews tracking emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) within the soil-plant continuum using the source-pathway-receptor-impact-mitigation (SPRIM) framework. Therefore, this review examines existing literature to gain insights into the occurrence, behaviour, fate, health hazards, and strategies for mitigating EOCs within the soil-plant system. EOCs identified in the soil-plant system encompass endocrine-disrupting chemicals, surfactants, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, plasticizers, gasoline additives, flame retardants, and per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Sources of EOCs in the soil-plant system include the land application of biosolids, wastewater, and solid wastes rich in EOCs. However, less-studied sources encompass plastics and atmospheric deposition. EOCs are transported from their sources to the soil-plant system and other receptors through human activities, wind-driven processes, and hydrological pathways. The behaviour, persistence, and fate of EOCs within the soil-plant system are discussed, including sorption, degradation, phase partitioning, (bio)transformation, biouptake, translocation, and bioaccumulation in plants. Factors governing the behaviour, persistence, and fate of EOCs in the soil-plant system include pH, redox potential, texture, temperature, and soil organic matter content. The review also discusses the environmental receptors of EOCs, including their exchange with other environmental compartments (aquatic and atmospheric), and interactions with soil organisms. The ecological health risks, human exposure via inhalation of particulate matter and consumption of contaminated food, and hazards associated with various EOCs in the soil-plant system are discussed. Various mitigation measures including removal technologies of EOCs in the soil are discussed. Finally, future research directions are presented.

Oxidative treatment of micropollutants present in wastewater: A special emphasis on transformation products, their toxicity, detection, and field-scale investigations

Micropollutants have become ubiquitous in aqueous environments due to the increased use of pharmaceuticals, personal care products, pesticides, and other compounds. In this review, the removal of micropollutants from aqueous matrices using various advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), such as photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, sulfate radical-based AOPs, ozonation, and Fenton-based processes has been comprehensively discussed. Most of the compounds were successfully degraded with an efficiency of more than 90%, resulting in the formation of transformation products (TPs). In this respect, degradation pathways with multiple mechanisms, including decarboxylation, hydroxylation, and halogenation, have been illustrated. Various techniques for the analysis of micropollutants and their TPs have been discussed. Additionally, the ecotoxicity posed by these TPs was determined using the toxicity estimation software tool (T.E.S.T.). Finally, the performance and cost-effectiveness of the AOPs at the pilot scale have been reviewed. The current review will help in understanding the treatment efficacy of different AOPs, degradation pathways, and ecotoxicity of TPs so formed.

Environmental behaviors of emerging contaminants in freshwater ecosystem dominated by submerged plants: A review

Persistent exposure of emerging contaminants (ECs) in freshwater ecosystem has initiated intense global concerns. Freshwater ecosystem dominated by submerged plants (SP-FES) has been widely constructed to control eutrophic water. However, the environmental behaviors (e.g. migration, transformation, and degradation) of ECs in SP-FES have rarely been concerned and summarized. This review briefly introduced the sources of ECs, the pathways of ECs entering into SP-FES, and the constituent elements of SP-FES. And then the environmental behaviors of dissolved ECs and refractory solid ECs in SP-FES were comprehensively summarized, and the feasibility of removing ECs from SP-FES was critically evaluated. Finally, the challenges and perspectives on the future development for ECs removal from SP-FES were prospected, giving possible research gaps and key directions. This review will provide theoretical and technical support for the effective removal of ECs in freshwater ecosystem, especially in SP-FES.

Construction of SrTiO3-BiOCl composite catalyst via facial microwave hydrothermal for highly efficient photocatalytic activity towards organic compounds degradation

This work mainly focuses on the preparation and performance study of SrTiO₃-BiOCl composite photocatalysis. The SrTiO₃-BiOCl photocatalysts are prepared via the facial microwave hydrothermal method. XRD, UV-vis DRS, SEM, TEM, XPS, N₂ adsorption and desorption isothermal experiment, FT-IR, and PL are applied to characterize the prepared samples. The spherical particles of SrTiO₃ grow on the flaky BiOCl, and the crystal size is uniform and evenly disperses on the BiOCl. The catalytic performance of the samples was evaluated over the degradation rates of methylene blue(MB). Typically, the clearance rates of MB reached to 99.65% over SrTiO₃-BiOCl-50% under visible light, which was much higher than that of SrTiO₃ and BiOCl (55.86%, 79.79%, respectively). The active species capturing experiments and ESR showed that the holes (h⁺) and ·OH are playing the main roles in the degradation process.

Occurrence of emerging organic contaminants and endocrine disruptors in different water compartments in Mexico - A review

This review compiles the studies (2007-2021) regarding the occurrence of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) and endocrine disruptors (EDs) in wastewater, surface water and groundwater in Mexico. A total of 174 compounds were detected, including pharmaceuticals, hormones, plasticizers, personal care products, sweeteners, drugs, and pesticides considered as EDs. The levels of EOCs and EDs varied from ng/L to 140 mg/L, depending on the compound, location, and compartment. Raw wastewater was the most studied matrix, showing a greater abundance and number of detected compounds. Nevertheless, surface waters showed high concentrations of bisphenol-A, butylbenzil-phthalate, triclosan, pentachlorophenol, and the hormones estrone, 17 α-ethinylestradiol, and 17 β-estradiol, which exceeded the thresholds set by international guidelines. Concentrations of 17 α-ethinylestradiol and triclosan exceeding the above-mentioned limits were reported in groundwater. Cropland irrigation with raw wastewater was the principal activity introducing EOCs and EDs into groundwater. The groundwater abundance of EOCs was considerably lesser than that of wastewater, highlighting the attenuation capacity of soils/aquifers during wastewater infiltration. However, carbamazepine and N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide showed higher concentrations in groundwater than those in wastewater, suggesting their accumulation/concentration in soils/pore-waters. Although the contamination of water resources represents one of the most environmental concerns in Mexico, this review brings to light the lack of studies on the occurrence of EOCs in Mexican waters, which is important for public health policies and for developing legislations that incorporates EOCs as priority contaminants in national water quality guidelines. Consequently, the development of legislations will support regulatory compliance for wastewater and drinking water, reducing the human exposure.

Assessing the potential chronic, sublethal and lethal ecotoxicity of land-applying biosolids on Folsomia candida and Lumbricus terrestris

The ecotoxicity of biosolids has been studied extensively using single-compound toxicity testing and 'spiking' studies; however, little knowledge exists on the ecotoxicity of biosolids as they are land-applied in the Canadian context. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the chronic, sub-lethal (i.e., behavioural), and lethal impacts of land- applying biosolids on the environmentally relevant Folsomia candida (springtails) and Lumbricus terrestris (earthworms) and concomitantly ascertain whether the use of biosolids for nutrient amendment is a sustainable practice. This study is part of a larger multi-compartment programme which includes terrestrial plants and aquatic arthropods. After a review of existing government protocols and research, the current study suggests new environmentally relevant bioassays as to elucidate the true nature of the potential ecotoxicity of land-applying biosolids, within a laboratory context. Specifically, protocols were developed (e.g., shoebox bioassays for L. terrestris sub-lethal testing) or modified (e.g., using Evans' boxes (Evans 1947) for chronic and sub-lethal testing on L. terrestris). Subsequently, two biosolids were tested on springtails and earthworms using avoidance and reproductive bioassay endpoints, at application rates that represent standard (8 tonnes ha^-1) and worst-case scenarios (22 tonnes ha^-1). Results indicated no effect of biosolids at the environmentally relevant concentration; the worst-case scenario exhibited a positive significantly significant relationship (indicating preference for treatment conditions). We suggest that further assessment of the potential ecotoxicological impact of biosolids employ (i) environmentally relevant organisms, (ii) appropriate bioassays including the use of whole-organism endpoints, and (iii) multi-kingdom testing (e.g., Kingdom Plantae, Animalia) to comprehensively elucidate answers. Lastly, in situ (field assays) are strongly encouraged for future studies.

Adsorption characteristics of N-rGO for multiple representative trace antibiotics in water

Antibiotics have attracted considerable attention as pollutants; however, they have not been controlled because they cannot be effectively treated via conventional water treatment. In this study, nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO) was prepared, and its adsorption performance on multiple trace antibiotics in water was investigated by considering sulfamethoxazole, levofloxacin, clindamycin, tetracycline, penicillin, and chloramphenicol as target pollutants. The results demonstrated that the adsorption process was completed within 60 min at a removal rate exceeding 80%. The adsorption process was in line with the first-order kinetic equation and the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model, with a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 1,265.82 mg g^-1 . Meanwhile, the effect of pH value was related to the structure of antibiotics. Simulation studies showed that anions and cations in natural water matrix did not inhibit the adsorption process, whereas humic acid adversely affected the adsorption effect. Characterizations revealed that the N-rGO surface was wrinkled with abundant and diverse oxygen-containing functional groups, which provided suitable conditions for efficient adsorption. The results indicated that N-rGO rapidly and effectively adsorbed trace antibiotics in water, thus providing a basis for constructing an adsorption-catalytic oxidation system. Overall, the proposed method is excellent for treating trace antibiotics in a water environment.

A Critical Review for Real-Time Continuous Soil Monitoring: Advantages, Challenges, and Perspectives

Most soil quality measurements have been limited to laboratory-based methods that suffer from time delay, high cost, intensive labor requirement, discrete data collection, and tedious sample pretreatment. Real-time continuous soil monitoring (RTCSM) possesses a great potential to revolutionize field measurements by providing first-hand information for continuously tracking variations of heterogeneous soil parameters and diverse pollutants in a timely manner and thus enable constant updates essential for system control and decision-making. Through a systematic literature search and comprehensive analysis of state-of-the-art RTCSM technologies, extensive discussion of their vital hurdles, and sharing of our future perspectives, this critical review bridges the knowledge gap of spatiotemporal uninterrupted soil monitoring and soil management execution. First, the barriers for reliable RTCSM data acquisition are elucidated by examining typical soil monitoring techniques (e.g., electrochemical and spectroscopic sensors). Next, the prevailing challenges of the RTCSM sensor network, data transmission, data processing, and personalized data management are comprehensively discussed. Furthermore, this review explores RTCSM data application for updating diverse strategies including high-fidelity soil process models, control methodologies, digital soil mapping, soil degradation, food security, and climate change mitigation. Finally, the significance of RTCSM implementation in agricultural and environmental fields is underscored through illuminating future directions and perspectives in this systematic review.

Nanomaterial Ecotoxicology in the Terrestrial and Aquatic Environment: A Systematic Review

This systematic review analyzes the studies available on the ecotoxicity of nanomaterials (NMs) in the environment to understand where future research should be addressed for achieving Agenda 2030 goals on sustainable development and environmental safety. We discuss the status of NMs ecotoxicological effects across different organisms that are representative of all natural environments (land, air, water). A total of 1562 publications were retrieved from the Web of Science (all databases) by using the search criteria “nanomaterials” and “ecotoxicology”; among them, 303 studies were included in the systematic review because they met any of the following criteria: (i) focalize on both search criteria; (ii) deal with terrestrial, or aquatic environment; (iii) address models (organisms, cells) for the nano environmental risk assessment and exposure. The knowledge gaps are identified together with novel insights that need to be further investigated to better understand the ecotoxicological environmental impacts of NMs.

Removal of Emerging Contaminants as Diclofenac and Caffeine Using Activated Carbon Obtained from Argan Fruit Shells

Activated carbons from argan nutshells were prepared by chemical activation using phosphoric acid H3PO4. This material was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, infrared spectrometry, and the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method. The adsorption of two emerging compounds, a stimulant caffeine and an anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac, from distilled water through batch and dynamic tests was investigated. Batch mode experiments were conducted to assess the capacity of adsorption of caffeine and diclofenac from an aqueous solution using the carbon above. Adsorption tests showed that the equilibrium time is 60 and 90 min for diclofenac and caffeine, respectively. The adsorption of diclofenac and caffeine on activated carbon from argan nutshells is described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The highest adsorption capacity determined by the mathematical model of Langmuir is about 126 mg/g for diclofenac and 210 mg/g for caffeine. The thermodynamic parameters attached to the studied absorbent/adsorbate system indicate that the adsorption process is spontaneous and exothermic for diclofenac and endothermic for caffeine.

A Narrative Review of the Facts and Perspectives on Agricultural Fertilization in Europe, with a Focus on Italy

Fertilizers stand at the base of current agricultural practices, providing the nutrient sustainment required for growing plants. Most fertilizers are synthetic chemicals, whose exploitation at very high levels poses a risk to cultivated land and the whole environment. They have several drawbacks including soil degradation, water pollution, and human food safety. Currently, the urgent need to counterbalance these negative environmental impacts has opened the way for the use of natural and renewable products that may help to restore soil structure, microorganism communities, nutrient elements, and, in some cases, to positively enhance carbon soil sequestration. Here, we endeavor to reinforce the vision that effective strategies designed to mitigate negative anthropic and climate change impacts should combine, in appropriate proportions, solutions addressed to a lower and less energy intensive production of chemicals and to a more inclusive exploitation of renewable natural products as biological soil amendments. After drawing an overview of the agricultural energy demand and consumption of fertilizers in Europe in the last few years (with a particular focus on Italy), this narrative review will deal with the current and prospective use of compost, biochar, and neem cake, which are suitable natural products with well-known potential and still-to-be-discovered features, to benefit sustainable agriculture and be adopted as circular economic solutions.

Microbial bioassays in environmental toxicity testing

Accidental spills and the misuse of chemicals may lead to current and legacy environmental contamination and pose concerns over possible (eco)toxicological secondary effects and risks toward non-target microbes and higher eukaryotes, including humans, in ecosystems. In the last decades, scientists and regulators have faced requests to thoroughly screen, prioritize and predict the possible deleterious effects of the huge numbers of existing and emerging xenobiotics, wastewaters and environmental samples on biological systems. In this context, it has become necessary to develop and validate (eco)toxicity bioassays based on microorganisms (e.g., bacteria, microalga, yeast, filamentous fungi, protozoa) as test-organisms whose data should be meaningful for environmental (micro)organisms that may be exposed to contaminated environments. These generally simple, fast and cost-effective bioassays may be preliminary and complementary to the more complex and long-term whole-organism animal-based traditional ecotoxicity tests. With the goal of highlighting the potential offered by microbial-based bioassays as non-animal alternatives in (eco)toxicity testing, the present chapter provides an overview of the current state-of-the art in the development and use of microbial toxicity bioassays through the examination of relatively recent examples with a diverse range of toxicity endpoints. It goes into the (eco)toxicological relevance of these bioassays, ranging from the more traditional microalga- and bacterial-based assays already accepted at regulatory level and commercially available to the more innovative microbial transcriptional profiling and gene expression bioassays, including some examples of biosensors.

Environmental Impact of the Presence, Distribution, and Use of Artificial Sweeteners as Emerging Sources of Pollution

Artificial sweeteners are posing a new threat to the environment. The water ecosystem is the primary recipient of these emerging contaminants. Once ingested, sufficient amount of these artificial sweeteners escape unchanged from the human body and are added to the environment. However, some are added in the form of their breakdown products through excretion. Artificial sweeteners are resistant to wastewater treatment processes and are therefore continuously introduced into the water environments. However, the environmental behavior, fate, and long-term ecotoxicological contributions of artificial sweeteners in our water resources still remain largely unknown. Some artificial sweeteners like saccharin are used as a food additive in animal feeds. It also forms the degradation product of the sulfonylurea herbicides. All artificial sweeteners enter into the wastewater treatment plants from the industries and households. From the effluents, they finally reside into the receiving environmental bodies including wastewaters, groundwaters, and surface waters. The global production of these sweeteners is several hundred tons annually and is continuously being added into the environment.

Occurrence and Fate of Emerging Pollutants in Water Environment and Options for Their Removal

Emerging pollutants (EPs) are chemicals known to cause major impacts on the terrestrial, aquatic life and human health as a result of their chronic and acute toxicity. Although lots of studies on EPs behavior in the aquatic environment are currently available in literature, an urgent requirement exists to complete toxicological studies and develop and implement efficient and ecological methods for their removal. This paper raises some relevant problems related to water environment pollution with EPs, the risks they can generate for aquatic life and humans and opportunities to reduce the effects of pollution by EPs removal. Categories of emerging chemicals of concern in the environment, their sources, fate and impacts, with some examples are discussed. Organic UV filters are shortly presented as a relative new EPs category, with a focus on the need to develop extensive experimental studies on their environmental occurrence, fate and removal. Furthermore, sources for the aquatic environment resulting from discharging EPs directly into rivers from wastewater treatment plants are examined. The incidence of environmental and human health risks related to EPs is also considered. The removal of EPs from the environment as a solution to risk mitigation is addressed, with emphasis on several non-conventional processes involving biological removal of EPs. The paper provides a critical look at the current challenges posed by the presence of emerging pollutants in the aquatic environment, with critical comments and recommendations for further research to reduce the impact of EPs on water and human health and improve the performance of developed methods for their removal.

Adsorption of emerging contaminants from water and wastewater by modified biochar: A review

Emerging contaminants (ECs), a group of relatively low-concentration but high-toxicity pollutants in the environment, have attracted widespread attention in recent years. These trace pollutants can be enriched in organisms and finally transferred to human bodies, posing a potential hazard to public health. Biochar, a low-cost and high-efficiency adsorbent, has been used to treat ECs in water. However, due to certain limitations of pristine biochar, such as poor adsorption capacity, narrow adsorption range, and other shortcomings, it is necessary to modify biochar to improve its applications in water treatment for ECs. Currently, there are a lot of reports on the removal of ECs from water by modified biochar. These studies explored different modification methods to functionalize biochar with various physicochemical properties, which resulted in distinct adsorption effects, behaviors and mechanisms of modified biochar on different ECs. There is a need to systematically review and digest the knowledge on the adsorption of ECs on modified biochar. In this review, recent biochar modification methods used in ECs removal are firstly summarized, and the adsorption performance and mechanisms of modified biochar on typical ECs are then systematically reviewed. Finally, the main research directions and trends, as well as recommendations and suggestions for future development are pointed out.

Analysis of Eurasian Stone curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus) microbial flora reveals the presence of multi-drug resistant pathogens in agro-pastoral areas of Sicily (Italy)

Spread of multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria in natural environments pose a risk to human and animal health. Wild birds are considered to be reservoirs of human pathogens and vectors of antimicrobial resistance distribution in the environment. The aim of this study is to assess the occurrence of antibiotic resistant bacteria in isolates from bird specimens living in three agro-pastoral areas of the southeastern Sicily. We analyzed the microbiomes of the Eurasian Stone curlew Burhinus oedicnemus (Charadriiformes, Aves) and identified 91 Gram positive and 212 Gram negative strains, whose antimicrobial susceptibility to 11 and 9 antibiotic classes (respectively) was evaluated using agar disk diffusion test. Isolates showed significant levels of antimicrobial resistance, and a high percentage of MDR strains was found both between the Gram positive (49.4%) and the Gram negative (34.9%). Multi-drug resistance levels are higher among strains isolated in the beak and the eye than among enteric (faeces and cloaca) strains. Our results indicate high levels of MDR strains among wild bird populations, with a potential threat to wildlife and human populations.

An overview of selected emerging outdoor airborne pollutants and air quality issues: The need to reduce uncertainty about environmental and human impacts

According to the literature, it is estimated that outdoor air pollution is responsible for the premature death in a range from 3.7 to 8.9 million persons on an annual basis across the world. Although there is uncertainty on this figure, outdoor air pollution represents one of the greatest global risks to human health. In North America, the rapid evolution of technologies (e.g., nanotechnology, unconventional oil and gas rapid development, higher demand for fertilizers in agriculture) and growing demand for ground, marine and air transportation may result in significant increases of emissions of pollutants that have not been carefully studied so far. As a result, these atmospheric pollutants insufficiently addressed by science in Canada and elsewhere are becoming a growing issue with likely human and environmental impacts in the near future. Here, an emerging pollutant is defined as one that meets the following criteria: 1) potential or demonstrated risk for humans or the environment, 2) absence of Canada-wide national standard, 3) insufficient routine monitoring, 4) yearly emissions greater than one ton in Canada, 5) insufficient data concerning significant sources, fate, and detection limit, and 6) insufficiently addressed by epidemiological studies. A new methodology to rank emerging pollutants is proposed here based on weighting multiple criteria. Some selected emerging issues are also discussed here and include the growing concern of ultrafine or nanoparticles, growing ammonia emissions (due to rapid expansion of the agriculture), increased methane/ethane/propane emissions (due to the expanding hydraulic fracturing in the oil and gas sector) and the growing transportation sector. Finally, the interaction between biological and anthropogenic pollution has been found to be a double threat for public health. Here, a multidisciplinary and critical overview of selected emerging pollutants and related critical issues is presented with a focus in Canada.Implications: This overview paper provides a selection methodology for emerging pollutants in the atmospheric environment. It also provides a critical discussion of some related issues. The ultimate objective is to inform about the need to 1) address emerging issues through adequate surface monitoring and modeling in order to inform the development of regulations, 2) reduce uncertainties by geographically mapping emerging pollutants (e.g., through data fusion, data assimilation of observations into air quality models) which can improve the scientific support of epidemiological studies and policies. This review also highlights some of the difficulties with the management of these emerging pollutants, and the need for an integrated approach.

Distribution of pesticides in agricultural and urban soils of Brazil: a critical review

The extensive use of pesticides leads to soil contamination and is harmful to environmental health. Brazil is considered the world's largest consumer of pesticides; however, there is no published review of the distribution and concentration of pesticides in the Brazilian soils. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyze the occurrence of pesticide residues in Brazilian soils through a systematic review of the data obtained from the official records of government agencies and scientific literature. Further, this review aims to estimate the risk quotient using the data extracted from these studies and compare it with the values from current legislation. The studies on pesticides were selected and screened, out of which 21 scientific articles were included in this review. The studies highlighted that 55 pesticides were detected in the soils in Brazil. Of these, 58% belonged to the chemical class of organochlorines and their concentration ranged from 0.0002-1243.68 mg kg-1. DDT (0.00002-1243.68 mg kg-1), HCH (0.00007-962.00 mg kg-1) and diuron (0.0031-4.16 mg kg-1) contributed to highest pesticide concentrations in soil. Residential soils had higher pesticide concentrations and greater risk factors than the agricultural soils. Moreover, 20% of the studies detected mixtures containing more than 10 types of pesticides. This study concluded that the specific scenarios evaluated by the reviewed studies do not reflect the current pesticide use and contamination in Brazil and there is a need for more information related to pesticide contamination in soils.

Chitosan Biopolymer from Crab Shell as Recyclable Film to Remove/Recover in Batch Ketoprofen from Water: Understanding the Factors Affecting the Adsorption Process

Seafood, a delight for many people, is sold in the market as a wide variety of products. However, seafood industries produce many by-products; for example, during the processing, the heads and shells of shellfish are generated as waste. This results in the generation of a large amount of shell waste that is accumulated over time, inducing a major environmental concern. Effective solutions for recycling shell waste should be taken into consideration, and the extraction of commercially useful substances like chitin and its derivates, such as chitosan, could be a valid solution for reducing the seafood waste’s environmental impact. Thus, during this work, we propose the use of chitosan as biowaste, to induce the formation of solid films useful for decontaminating water from emerging pollutants. In particular, ketoprofen was used as a model contaminant, and a high percentage of removal, at least 90%, was obtained in a short time under our experimental conditions. Thus, a comprehensive investigation into the adsorption of ketoprofen onto chitosan film was performed, detailing the nature of the adsorption by studying the effects of pH, temperature changes, and electrolyte presence in the solutions containing the pollutant. The process was found to be pH-dependent, involving meanly electrostatic interactions between the pollutant molecules and chitosan. The endothermic character of the adsorption was inferred. The kinetics of the process was investigated, showing that the pseudo second-order kinetic model best fit the experimental data. A recycling process of the adsorbent was proposed; therefore, the adsorbed pollutant can be recovered by reusing the same adsorbent material for further consecutive cycles of adsorption without affecting the efficiency for ketoprofen removal from water.

Environmental Transformation of Pharmaceutical Formulations: A Scientific Review

Environmental pollution caused by pharmaceuticals and their transformation products (TPs) has become an increasingly important concern, due to the increased use of pharmaceutical formulations exposed to environmental change. Considerable concerns have been raised regarding potential toxic effects of the transformation products of pharmaceutical formulations on human health. Environmental risk assessments are mostly based on one active component, which causes different ecotoxicological effects, albeit the particular component is present in the environment as a part of a multicomponent mixture with different pharmaceuticals and excipients. The purpose of this review was to present the insight and new knowledge recently obtained by studies on the risk of pharmaceutical formulations, including all contained excipients, pharmaceuticals, and their transformation products exposed to the environment. Numerous studies have shown that the level of pharmaceuticals in the environment is below toxic concentration; however, long exposure to very low concentrations can still lead to harmful concentrations in biota. Accordingly, the findings of this study are expected to highlight the existing issues of the effect of pharmaceutical formulations to the environment, including TPs, and help to determine future research directions towards accumulating the data and improving ecological risk assessment.

Transport of Potential Manure Hormone and Pharmaceutical Contaminants through Intact Soil Columns

Although adding manure to agricultural soils is a commonly practiced disposal method and a means to enhance soil productivity, potential environmental contamination by any associated chemicals of emerging concern (CECs) such as hormones and pharmaceuticals is not well understood. Our objective was to provide field-relevant predictions of soil transport and attenuation of 19 potential manure CECs using undisturbed soil columns irrigated under unsaturated conditions. The CEC concentrations in leached water were monitored for 13 wk using high performance liquid chromatography-time of flight-mass spectrometry (HPLC-TOF-MS), after which time soil in the cores was removed and sampled for extractable CECs. Compounds quantified in column leachate included all four of the added sulfonamide antibiotics and the nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory drug flunixin. Only trace amounts of several of the seven hormones, five remaining antibiotics, and two antimicrobials leached from the columns from exogenous soil additions. Soil residues of all 19 compounds were detected, with highest extractable amounts for 17α-hydroxyprogesterone > triclosan (antimicrobial) > flunixin > oxytetracycline. Those CECs with the highest recoveries as calculated by summing leached and extractable amounts were flunixin (14.5%), 17α-hydroxyprogesterone (5.3%), triclosan (4.6%), and sulfadimethoxine (4.8%). Manure management to prevent CEC contamination should consider the potential environmental problems caused by negatively charged compounds with the greatest mobility (flunixin and sulfadimethoxine) and those that have long residence times in soil (triclosan, 17α-hydroxyprogesterone, flunixin, and oxytetracycline). Flunixin is particularly important given its mobility and long residence time in soil.

Advances of magnetic nanoparticles in environmental application: environmental remediation and (bio)sensors as case studies

Nanotechnology is an emerging technique drawing increasing attentions in biomedical, electronic, environmental, and industrial application. Nanoparticles (NPs) possess unique optical, electrical, catalytic, and thermal properties, among which magnetic NPs (MNPs) are one of the most important groups with excellent superparamagnetism property, large surface area, and biocompatibility. In this review, methods for synthesizing and functionalizing MNPs are summarized and linked to their applications in environmental science as either adsorbents or catalysts for removing contaminants from environmental matrices, illustrating stronger reactivity, higher removal capacity, and fast kinetics. Additionally, we also comprehensively discuss the application of MNPs as (bio)sensors to selectively and sensitively detect the presence of environmental contaminants or pathogenic bacteria. This work summarizes the recent progresses of using MNPs as powerful tools in environmental science and engineering, raising their state-of-art application from environmental perspectives and benefiting researchers interested in NPs and environmental studies.
