Turkish validity and reliability study of male genital self-image scale (MGSIS)

Objective:

This study, which was carried out in order to determine the Turkish validity and reliability of the “Male Genital Self-Image Scale” in a population sample of Turkish men, is of methodological type.

Methods:

In the study, language, content, construct validity, and reliability methods were used for the intercultural adaptation of the scale. The data collection process of the scale was carried out with 336 men who applied to the Family Medicine Polyclinic of a hospital. In the language and content validity phase, the opinions of experts with technical and cultural knowledge were consulted. The data of the study were collected with the Sociodemographic Characteristics Form and the Male Genital Self-Image Scale.

Results:

As a result of experts evaluation, the Content Validity Ratio value was determined as 0.83. At the stage of construct validity, the suitability of the single-factor model of the items of the Male Genital Self-Image Scale was tested. It was determined that all items contributed significantly to the factor (0.62–0.92). As a result of the Confirmatory Factor Analysis, the measurement model was statistically validated (χ2 = 32.083, p = 0.001, χ2/df = 2.917, RMSEA = 0.076). The Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient was calculated as α = 0.92 in the analysis performed to evaluate the internal consistency of Male Genital Self-Image Scale.

Conclusion:

The results of the study revealed that Male Genital Self-Image Scale is a valid and reliable tool to evaluate genital self-image in Turkish men.

Making Choices in Discourse: New Alternative Masculinities Opposing the "Warrior's Rest"

Psychology research on men studies, attractiveness, and partner preferences has evolved from the influence of sociobiological perspectives to the role of interactions in shaping election toward sexual–affective relationships and desire toward different kinds of masculinities. However, there is a scientific gap in how language and communicative acts among women influence the kind of partner they feel attracted to and in the reproduction of relationship double standards, like the myth of the “warrior’s rest” where female attractiveness to “bad boys” is encouraged or supported. Some women imitate “the warrior” behavior of men by choosing dominant traditional masculinities (DTM) to have “fun” with and oppressed traditional masculinities (OTM) for “rest” after the “fun” with DTM—choosing an OTM for a stable relationship, but perhaps without passion, while also feeling attraction toward DTM, a response which perpetuates the chauvinist double standard that the feminist movement has condemned when men behave in this sexist way. Through conducting a qualitative study with communicative daily life stories, this article explores, on the one hand, how language and social interaction among women can lead to the reproduction of the DTM role by women and, on the other hand, also how new alternative masculinities (NAM) offer an alternative by explicitly rejecting, through the language of desire, to be the rest for the female warrior, the second fiddle to any woman. This has the potential to become a highly attractive alternative to DTM. Findings provide new knowledge through the analysis of communicative acts and masculinities evidencing the importance of language uses in the reproduction of the double standards in gender relations and to understand how and why these practices are maintained and which kind of language uses can contribute to preventing them. Implications for research and interventions on preventive socialization of gender violence are discussed.

Body Image and Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder Relationship in a Representative Sample of Iranian Women

Objective: Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) among women is a complicated one which is created by various factors playing roles. One of the potential concerns related to Body Image (BI) is lack of sexual appeal in women. Body Image is often described as what a person perceives of their body encompassing the biological, psychological and social factors. The present research pursues the goal to investigate the association between BI and HSDD among the reproductive age women in Iran. Materials and methods: The current study is a cross-sectional (descriptive -analytical) research done on 1000 reproductive age included woman (15-49 years), performed by systematic random sampling method. The data collection tool includes the socio-demographics and the sexual desire scale in addition to the revised sexual distress scale to measure HSDD completed as self-report by the samples. Univariate and multivariate regression tests have been used in order to analyze the data. Results: The mean ± SD age of the women participating in the study was 32.09 ± 7.33. Having adjusted the confounder variables' effect by logistic regression multivariate analysis; the odd ratio for HSDD has been analyzed. The findings suggested that the odd ratio for HSDD in those not satisfied or slightly feeling fulfilled with their BI has been OR: 4.2 (95% CI: 1.98-9.05) and OR: 3.9 (95% CI: 2.29-6.65), respectively, times more than the ones highly satisfied with their body image. Conclusion: The present study results indicate that being dissatisfied with BI is a determinant factor of HSDD that is more probable in the people with negative image of their body structure and feeling lack of bodily appeal. Thus it is imperative to pay attention to this factor when analyzing HSDD.

Factors Influencing Couples' Sexuality in the Puerperium: A Systematic Review

INTRODUCTION

The puerperium is a period of adaptation in which various transformations take place in the lives of women and men on their way to becoming mothers and fathers. These changes can also have repercussions on their sexual relations. How the couple deals with this transition is crucial to the well-being of the couple and affects how parents relate to the baby.

AIM

This study aimed to explore the factors that influence sexuality in both women and men during postpartum.

METHODS

We conducted a bibliographic review of 236 articles found on the PubMed database and published from 2008 to January 2019.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE

The main outcome measure was the impact of various physical, psychological, and sociocultural factors on couples' sexual functioning during postpartum.

RESULTS

The main problems that couples face after childbirth can be classified as (i) psychological changes, such as loss of a sense of self, transitioning to parenthood, taking on the new roles of mother and father, and feelings of abandonment among men; (ii) body changes in women that affect their self-image and perineal trauma; (iii) hormonal changes in women and men that can lead to reduced sexual desire in both and vaginal dryness or dyspareunia in women; (iv) changes in the marital relationship, including changes in each other's roles, taking time for intimacy, and initiating sexual intercourse; (v) sociocultural influences, such as social support, culturally expected roles, and beliefs regarding when to resume sex; and (vi) lifestyle changes, especially with regard to baby care.

CONCLUSION

Sexuality during postpartum is influenced by multiple factors: physical, psychological, and sociocultural. Our findings offer a deeper understanding of how the transition to parenthood affects sexual relationships during the postpartum period. Implications regarding caring for and promoting the sexual health of individuals and couples after childbirth are discussed, and some medical recommendations for parents are offered. Relationship Quality and Perceived Partner's Body Appreciation Is Related to Women's Own Body Appreciation and Sexual Functioning

Research on body appreciation is limited, especially when examining its relationship to sexual functioning. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between body appreciation and sexual functioning, while measuring perceived partner's body appreciation and general relationship quality. A sample of 244 women aged 18 to 30 completed measures of sexual functioning, relationship quality, and body image online. General relationship quality and perceived partner's appreciation of one's body predicted levels of sexual functioning. Levels of body appreciation did not predict sexual functioning over and above general relationship quality and perceived partner's appreciation of one's body. This study is the first to demonstrate the significance of general relationship quality and perceived partner's body appreciation in relation to levels of body appreciation and sexual functioning. The findings highlight the importance of understanding body appreciation and its role in buffering the harmful impacts of viewing idealized images within the media.

Physical attractiveness and women's HIV risk in rural Malawi

BACKGROUND

Qualitative evidence from sub-Saharan Africa, where a generalized AIDS epidemic exists, suggests that attractiveness may play a role in shaping individual-level HIV risk. Attractive women, who are often blamed for the epidemic and stigmatized, are believed to pose a higher HIV risk because they are viewed as having more and riskier partners.

OBJECTIVE

We examine the association between perceived attractiveness and HIV infection and risk in rural Malawi in the midst of the country's severe AIDS epidemic.

METHODS

We use interviewers' ratings of respondents' attractiveness, along with HIV test results and women's assessments of their own likelihood of infection, to estimate the association between perceived attractiveness and HIV infection and risk for a random sample of 961 women aged 15-35.

RESULTS

Results show that women who are rated by interviewers as 'much less' or 'less' attractive than other women their age are 9% more likely to test positive for HIV. We also find that attractiveness is associated with women's own assessments of their HIV risk: Among women who tested negative, those perceived as 'much less' or 'less' attractive than average report themselves to be at greater risk of HIV infection.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest that attractiveness is negatively associated with HIV risk in Malawi, countering local beliefs that hold attractive women responsible for perpetuating the epidemic.

CONTRIBUTION

This study highlights the need to consider perceived physical attractiveness, and sexual desirability more broadly, as an under-examined axis of inequality in HIV risk in high-prevalence settings.

Your Face is Your Fortune: Does Adolescent Attractiveness Predict Intimate Relationships Later in Life?

OBJECTIVE

A growing literature documents the importance of physical attractiveness in young and middle adulthood for romantic, marital, and sexual relationships, but little is known about how attractiveness in adolescence matters to intimate relationships in later life. We ask: does attractiveness early in life convey ongoing benefits late in life, or do such benefits erode over time?

METHODS

We use multivariate regression models and more than 50 years of data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study to examine the connections between adolescent physical attractiveness and intimate relationships (i.e., sexual activity and access to potential sexual partners) in later life.

RESULTS

We find that adolescent attractiveness facilitates sexual activity in later life. This relationship is largely driven by attractiveness increasing the probability of having access to potential sexual partners. However, attractiveness is not related to sexual activity among married couples, even after controlling for marital duration. Men, those in good health, and wealthier individuals are also more likely to engage in several facets of intimate relationships.

DISCUSSION

These findings highlight the importance of relationship context for later life sexual activity and begin to explicate the pathways through which factors across the life course-particularly attractiveness-influence sexual activity in later life.

Body image and female sexual functioning and behavior: a review

Knowledge in the research fields of body image and sexuality has significantly increased in the last decade. In this review, data from 57 studies were compiled for a review of empirical evidence regarding the association between sexuality and body image among healthy women. The overall conclusion is that body image issues can affect all domains of sexual functioning. Cognitions and self-consciousness seem to be key factors in understanding the complex relationships between women's body image and sexuality. Body evaluations and cognitions not only interfere with sexual responses and experiences during sexual activity, but also with sexual behavior, sexual avoidance, and risky sexual behavior.
