Structural characterization of water/ice formation in SBA-15 silicas: III. The triplet profile for 86 Å pore diameter

Effect of H2O Activity on Zeolite Formation

In an effort to understand the effects of H₂O activity on zeolite formation, we have synthesized LTA zeolite using a combination of freezing processes and varying drying temperatures. Sodium aluminate and sodium silicate were used to form LTA zeolite, according to the IZA (International Zeolite Association) protocol. The synthesis steps were modified by adding the precursor frozen process by a rapid liquid nitrogen (-196 °C) treatment or slow conventional freezer treatment (-20 °C). The samples were subsequently sonicated and then dried at 80 °C or 40 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed on the samples immediately after the drying process as well as after 2 weeks and 1 month of aging the solid products. The results indicated that LTA zeolite does not form. The silica-alumina precursor after both freezing processes and after being dried at 80 °C showed the presence of sodalite displaying stable behavior over time. Both sets of samples dried at 40 °C and did not show the presence of zeolite immediately after the drying process. However, after 2 weeks, the liquid nitrogen-frozen precursor was characterized by the presence of EMT whereas zeolites never formed in the -20 °C samples. These results suggest that freezing processes differently control the H₂O activity during the drying and aging processes in the solid state. Thus, although the precursor chemical composition is the same, the type of zeolite formed is different.

Extent and relevance of stacking disorder in "ice I(c)"

A solid water phase commonly known as "cubic ice" or "ice I(c)" is frequently encountered in various transitions between the solid, liquid, and gaseous phases of the water substance. It may form, e.g., by water freezing or vapor deposition in the Earth's atmosphere or in extraterrestrial environments, and plays a central role in various cryopreservation techniques; its formation is observed over a wide temperature range from about 120 K up to the melting point of ice. There was multiple and compelling evidence in the past that this phase is not truly cubic but composed of disordered cubic and hexagonal stacking sequences. The complexity of the stacking disorder, however, appears to have been largely overlooked in most of the literature. By analyzing neutron diffraction data with our stacking-disorder model, we show that correlations between next-nearest layers are clearly developed, leading to marked deviations from a simple random stacking in almost all investigated cases. We follow the evolution of the stacking disorder as a function of time and temperature at conditions relevant to atmospheric processes; a continuous transformation toward normal hexagonal ice is observed. We establish a quantitative link between the crystallite size established by diffraction and electron microscopic images of the material; the crystallite size evolves from several nanometers into the micrometer range with progressive annealing. The crystallites are isometric with markedly rough surfaces parallel to the stacking direction, which has implications for atmospheric sciences.

Density minimum of confined water at low temperatures: a combined study by small-angle scattering of X-rays and neutrons

A simple explanation is given for the low-temperature density minimum of water confined within cylindrical pores of ordered nanoporous materials of different pore size. The experimental evidence is based on combined data from in-situ small-angle scattering of X-rays (SAXS) and neutrons (SANS), corroborated by additional wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). The combined scattering data cannot be described by a homogeneous density distribution of water within the pores, as was originally suggested from SANS data alone. A two-step density model reveals a wall layer covering approximately two layers of water molecules with higher density than the residual core water in the central part of the pores. The temperature-induced changes of the scattering signal from both X-rays and neutrons are consistent with a minimum of the average water density. We show that the temperature at which this minimum occurs depends monotonically on the pore size. Therefore we attribute this minimum to a liquid-solid transition of water influenced by confinement. For water confined in the smallest pores of only 2 nm in diameter, the density minimum is explained in terms of a structural transition of the surface water layer closest to the hydrophilic pore walls.

The Dynamic Response Function χ T(Q,t) of Confined Supercooled Water and its Relation to the Dynamic Crossover Phenomenon

We have made a series of Quasi-Elastic Neutron Scattering (QENS) studies of supercooled water confined in 3-D and 1-D geometries, specifically, interstitial water in aged cement paste (3-D) and water confined in MCM-41-S and Double Wall Nano Tube DWNT (1-D). In addition, we also include the cases of hydration water on protein surface and other biopolymer surfaces (pseudo 2-D). By analyzing the QENS spectra using Relaxing Cage Model (RCM), we are able to extract accurately the self-intermediate scattering function of hydrogen atoms FH(Q,t), at low-Q as a function of temperature T, showing an α-relaxation process at long time. We can then construct the Dynamic Response Function χT(Q,t) = -dFH(Q,t)/dT. χT(Q,t) as a function of t at constant Q shows a single peak at the characteristic α-relaxation time 〈τ〉, the amplitude of which grows as we approach the dynamic crossover temperature TL observed before in each of these geometries. However, the peak height of χT(Q,t) decreases after passing the crossover temperature TL. We make an argument to relate the occurrence of the extremum of the peak height in χT to the existence of the dynamic crossover temperature in each of these cases.

Origin of the enthalpy features of water in 1.8 nm pores of MCM-41 and the large C(p) increase at 210 K

It is shown that exothermic and endothermic features of dH(m)/dt observed on heating rapidly precooled and slowly precooled states of water in 1.8 nm pores of MCM-41 and the unusually large increase in the specific heat in the 210-230 K range [M. Oguni, Y. Kanke, S. Namba, and AIP Conf, Proc. 982, 34 (2008)] are inconsistent with kinetic unfreezing of a disordered solid, or glass softening. The exotherm is attributable to the melt's gradual conversion to distorted icelike structures and the endotherm to the reverse process until their fractional amounts reach a reversible equilibrium on heating. The large increase in C(p,m) with T is attributed to the latent heat, similar to that seen on premelting of fine grain crystals. The available calorimetric data on freezing and melting and the pore-size dependence of the features support this interpretation. The findings also put into question a conclusion from neutron scattering studies that in 1.8 nm pores water undergoes a structural and kinetic transition at approximately 225 K while remaining a liquid.
