Graphene-based strain sensor with sandwich structure and its application in bowel sounds monitoring

Surgery is one of the primary treatment modalities for gastrointestinal tumors but can lead to postoperative ileus (POI), which can aggravate pain and increase costs. The incidence of POI can be effectively reduced by monitoring bowel sounds to assist doctors in deciding the timing of transoral feeding. In this study, we prepared a flexible strain sensor based on a graphene composite material and tested the feasibility of sensor monitoring of bowel sounds using simultaneous stethoscope and sensor monitoring. We found that the time of hearing the bowel sounds (12.0–12.1 s) corresponded to the time of waveform change monitored by the sensor (12.036 s), and the sound tone magnitude corresponded to the waveform amplitude. This proves that the application of sensors to monitor bowel sounds is feasible, which opens up a new field for the application of graphene sensors and provides a new way for clinicians to judge the condition of the intestine.

Porous polyvinyl alcohol/graphene oxide composite film for strain sensing and energy-storage applications

In this study, a flexible porous polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/graphene oxide (GO) composite film was developed and tested for flexible strain sensing and energy-storage applications. Morphology and mechanical properties were studied; tensile strength and Young's modulus increased by 225% and 86.88%, respectively, at 0.5 wt% GO. The PVA/GO film possesses exceptional sensing ability to various mechanical strains, such as tension, compression, bending, and torsion. For example, the gauge factor of the PVA/GO film as a tensile-strain sensor was measured as 2.46 (246%). Under compression loads, the PVA/GO composite film showed piezoresistive and capacitive strain-sensing characteristics. Under 5 kPa of compression load, the relative resistance increased by 81% with a 100 msec response time; the relative capacitance increased by 160% with a 120 msec response time. The PVA/GO strain sensor exhibited high durability and reliability over 20 × 10³cycles of tensile strain and bending at 3.33 Hz. Moreover, the PVA/GO composite film showed good electrochemical properties due to its porous structure; the maximum capacitance was 124.7 F g^-1at 0.5 wt% GO. After 20 × 10³charging-discharging cycles, the capacitance retention rate was 94.45%, representing high stable capacitance performance. The results show that electrically conductive porous PVA nanocomposite films are promising candidates for strain sensing and energy-storage devices.

Perfect Broadband Sound Absorption on a Graphene-Decorated Porous System with Dual-3D Structures

Noise is a threat to human life quality and an invisible killer that causes many chronic diseases. The vast majority of porous sound absorbers are single-phased, which limits their sound absorption potential. Herein, a graphene-decorated porous system (GDPS) prepared using the immersion-hydrothermal-freezing self-assembly method is reported as an efficient sound absorber based on its unique consecutive double three-dimensional (dual-3D) structure. Due to the increased tortuosity and other gain effects, the novel structure can achieve the perfect broadband absorption at a wide bandwidth in which the sound absorption coefficient exceeds 0.9 easily. Within the effective thicknesses, the widest perfect absorption bandwidth of 814-6400 Hz is realized. Moreover, a higher graphene concentration and the addition of a polymer are found to be able to decrease the absorption frequency to the lowest values of 1979 and 1544 Hz, respectively. The design of a unique dual-3D structure opens up new strategies and applications to use graphene aerogels in noise and vibration applications.

Optimizing microenvironment by integrating negative pressure and exogenous electric fields via a flexible porous conductive dressing to accelerate wound healing

Wound healing is a complex and sequential biological process that involves multiple stages. Current treatments for nonhealing or chronic wounds are unsatisfactory as they exert a single effect on one specific activity. Herein, we constructed a silver nanowire (AgNW)-based, three-dimensional (3D), porous foam dressing that is flexible and conductive. This conductive foam dressing was composed of AgNWs modified with a stable hydrophobic coating and porous polyurethane (PU), providing a skeleton to support the 3D conductive networks. The AgNWs-PU foam dressing exhibited favorable biocompatibility, outstanding electrical properties, excellent bending-compression durability, and long-term stability under wet conditions, making it suitable for wound treatment. Via the conductive foam dressing, negative pressure and exogenous wound directional electric fields (EFs) could be integrated for simultaneous implementation, and the artificial jointly constructed microenvironment promoted wound healing in a system. This novel "all-in-one" device presented intrinsic multifunctionality, including the drainage of pus and necrotic tissue, mitigation of inflammation, promotion of cell proliferation, direction of keratinocyte migration, and induction of angiogenesis. An immunohistochemical assay and western blot analysis illustrated that the angiogenesis and cell proliferation pathways in the tissue were significantly activated when this novel therapy was adopted. More importantly, the practical performance of this "all-in-one" device was demonstrated by assessment of full-thickness defect wounds in model pigs. Comparing the percentage of residual wound area after administration of traditional treatment (25.82 ± 3.52%) and the novel treatment (3.07 ± 1.23%) demonstrated the promising applications of this novel treatment in clinical wound healing.

Comparative Study of Nanocarbon-Based Flexible Multifunctional Composite Electrodes

Although nanocarbon-based nanofillers have been widely used to improve the energy-storing and sensing functions of porous materials, the comparison of the effects of different nanocarbon-based fillers on the capacitive and flexible sensing properties of nanocarbon-based porous sponge composite supercapacitor electrodes by combining a carbon nanotube, graphene, and graphene oxide with porous sponge is incomplete. The specific capacitance of carbon nanotube-based electrodes is 20.1 F/g. The specific capacitance of graphene-based electrodes is 26.7 F/g. The specific capacitance of graphene oxide-based electrodes is 78.1 F/g, and the capacity retention rate is 92.99% under 20 000 charge-discharge cycles. Under a bending load of 180°, the capacitance retention rate of graphene oxide sponge composite electrodes is 67.46%, which indicates that the prepared electrodes of supercapacitor have the advantages of high capacitance and good flexibility at the same time. To demonstrate their performance, an array of three graphene oxide supercapacitors in series was constructed, which could light up a red light-emitting diode (LED). The tensile strength of carbon nanotube sponge composite electrodes is 0.267 MPa, and the tensile linearity is 0.0169. The experimental results show that graphene oxide-based sponge composite supercapacitor electrodes have the best capacitance performance and carbon nanotube sponge composites have the most potential as a flexible sensor.
