Abstract
CONTEXT The increase in bacterial resistance to currently available medications, which increases mortality rates, treatment costs is a global problem, and highlights the need for novel classes of antibacterial agents or new molecules that interact synergistically with antimicrobials. OBJECTIVE The current work explores the potential synergistic effects of certain natural phenylpropanoids and flavonoids on ciprofloxacin (CIP), ampicillin (AMP), gentamicin (GEN), and tetracycline (TET). MATERIALS AND METHODS The adjuvant role of cinnamic acid, p-coumaric acid, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, ferulic acid methyl ester, sinapic acid, apigenin, and luteolin was evaluated by determining the MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration) values of antibiotics in the presence of subinhibitory concentrations (200, 100, and/or 50 µM) of the compounds in Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains using a 2-fold broth microdilution method. The 96-well plates were incubated at 37 °C for 18 h, and dimethyl sulfoxide was used as a solvent control. RESULTS The combination of luteolin with CIP, reduced the MIC values of the antibiotic from 0.625 to 0.3125 µM and to 0.078 µM in 100 and 200 µM concentration, respectively, in sensitive Staphylococcus aureus. Sinapic acid decreased the MIC value of CIP from 0.625 to 0.3125 µM in S. aureus, from 1.56 to 0.78 µM in Klebsiella pneumoniae, and the MIC of GEN from 0.39 to 0.095 µM in Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS These findings are useful in delaying the development of resistance, as the required antibacterial effect can be achieved with the use of lower concentrations of antibiotics.

Abstract
A novel antibacterial film based on arabinoxylan (AX) was prepared by introducing ferulic acid (FA) to AX through a laccase-catalyzed procedure. The ferulic acid-arabinoxylan conjugates (FA-AX conjugates) have been characterized. Results showed that FA was successfully grafted onto the AX chains by covalent linkages, likely through nucleophilic addition between O-Ph in the phenolic hydroxyl group of FA, or through Michael addition via O-quinone intermediates. FA-AX conjugates showed improved crystallinity, thermal stability, and rheological properties, as well as a distinct surface morphology, compared with those of native AX. Moreover, FA-AX conjugates exhibited enhanced antibacterial ability against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Shewanella sp., and Pseudomonas sp. Mechanistic studies revealed that the enhanced antibacterial ability was due to the penetration of bacterial membrane by the phenolic molecule and the steric effect of FA-AX conjugates. The study demonstrates that the laccase-induced grafting method was effective in producing FA-AX conjugates; we have demonstrated its antibacterial ability and great potential in prolonging the shelf life of fresh seafood products.

Abstract
This work aimed to explore an alternative to the use of antibiotics for prevention and treatment of wounds infection caused by two common bacterial pathogens Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. For this purpose, three different essential oil components (EOCs), namely carvacrol, citronellol and cinnamic acid, were loaded into electrospun fibers of poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) aided by alpha-cyclodextrin (αCD) and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD). Electrospun-fibers prepared with each EOC and their mixtures were screened for antimicrobial capability and characterized regarding morphological, mechanical, thermal, surface polarity, antibiofilm and antioxidant properties. αCD formed poly(pseudo)rotaxanes with PCL and weakly interacted with EOCs, while HPβCD facilitated EOC encapsulation and formation of homogeneous fibers (500-1000 nm diameter) without beads. PCL/HPβCD fibers with high concentration of EOCs (mainly carvacrol and cinnamic acid) showed strong antibiofilm (>3 log CFU reduction) and antioxidant activity (10-50% DPPH scavenging effects). Different performances were recorded for the EOCs and their mixtures; cinnamic acid migrated to fiber surface and was released faster. Fibers biocompatibility was verified using hemolysis tests and in ovo tissue integration and angiogenesis assays. Overall, HPβCD facilitates complete release of EOCs from the fibers to the aqueous medium, being an environment-friendly and cost-effective strategy for the treatment of infected wounds.

Abstract
PURPOSE Colistin is used as a last resort antibiotic against infections caused by multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria, especially carbapenem-resistant bacteria. However, colistin-resistance in clinical isolates is becoming more prevalent. Cinnamaldehyde and baicalin, which are the major active constituents of Cinnamomum and Scutellaria, have been reported to exhibit antibacterial properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the capacity of cinnamaldehyde and baicalin to enhance the antibiotic activity of colistin in Enterobacterales and Acinetobacter baumannii strains. METHODS The MICs of colistin were determined with and without fixed concentrations of cinnamaldehyde and baicalin by the broth microdilution method. The FIC indices were also calculated. In addition, time-kill assays were performed with colistin alone and in combination with cinnamaldehyde and baicalin to determine the bactericidal action of the combinations. Similarly, the effects of L-arginine, L-glutamic acid and sucrose on the MICs of colistin combined with cinnamaldehyde and baicalin were studied to evaluate the possible effects of these compounds on the charge of the bacterial cell- wall. RESULTS At nontoxic concentrations, cinnamaldehyde and baicalin partially or fully reversed resistance to colistin in Enterobacterales and A. baumannii. The combinations of the two compounds with colistin had bactericidal or synergistic effects on the most resistant strains. The ability of these agents to reverse colistin resistance could be associated with bacterial cell wall damage and increased permeability. CONCLUSION Cinnamaldehyde and baicalin are good adjuvants for the antibiotic colistin against Enterobacterales- and A. baumannii-resistant strains.

Abstract
Bacterial infection and free radical oxidative stress at the wound site could easily cause cascade inflammation and hinder the healing process of the wound. In this study, chitosan-cysteine-gallic acid (CCG) hydrogel with antibacterial and antioxidant properties was synthesized by chitosan (CS), cysteine (Cys), and gallic acid (GA) for a preliminary evaluation of its therapeutic efficacy in a mouse model of full-layer skin defect. In vitro analysis showed that the CCG hydrogel had good antibacterial activity and blood compatibility. In vivo, the CCG hydrogel wound dressings accelerated wound healing, stimulate angiogenesis, increase collagen deposition and anti-inflammatory factor expression. The CCG hydrogel wound dressing is designed to promote the regeneration of damaged skin tissue and is expected to become a potential candidate for clinical treatment.

Abstract
Intensive aquaculture causes a decline in the health status of fish, resulting in an increased disease incidence. To counteract this, feed additives have been utilized to improve the growth performance and health of aquaculture species. This work specifically investigates the impact of powdered Ficus deltoidea (FD) on various parameters related to growth, blood parameters, liver and intestine morphology, body proximate analysis, digestive enzymes, antioxidant capacity, and disease resistance to motile Aeromonad Septicemia (MAS) caused by Aeromonas hydrophila infection in African catfish, Clarias gariepinus. Four formulated diets were prepared: T1 (0% FD), T2 (0.5% FD), T3 (0.75% FD), and T4 (1% FD). After 8 weeks, the African catfish's growth performance fed with the T2 diet exhibited a substantial improvement (p < 0.05), along with a remarkably lower (p < 0.05) feed conversion ratio (FCR) when compared to the other treatment groups. Blood parameter analysis revealed notably higher (p < 0.05) levels of white blood cell (WBC), lymphocytosis (LYM), hemoglobin (HGB), albumin (ALB), globulin (GLOB), as well as total protein (TP) in the T2 diet group. While all treatment groups displayed normal intestinal morphology, liver deterioration was observed in groups supplemented with higher FD. The T2 diet group recorded the highest villus length, width, and crypt depth. Protease and lipase levels were also notably improved in the T2 diet group compared to other treatment groups. Additionally, catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were remarkably elevated in all FD diet groups than in the control group. The expression of immune-related genes, including transforming growth factor beta 1, heat shock protein 90, nuclear factor kappa-B gene, and lysozyme G, was upregulated in all treatments. Overall, the results of this study indicate that incorporating dietary FD at 0.5% concentration in the diet of African catfish may enhance their productivity in intensive farming.

Abstract
The extensive usage of nonbiodegradable plastic materials for food packaging is a major environmental concern. To address this, researchers focus on developing biocompatible and biodegradable food packaging from natural biopolymers, such as polysaccharides, proteins, and polyesters. These biopolymer-based packaging materials extend the shelf life of food due to their inherent antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. An important additive that enhances these beneficial effects is gallic acid (GA), a naturally occurring phenolic compound. GA exhibits potent antioxidant activity by scavenging free radicals and excellent antimicrobial activity against a wide range of bacteria by disrupting cell membranes. These gallic acid based active packaging solutions have demonstrated remarkable abilities to inhibit lipid oxidation, enzymatic browning, and microbial contamination and even retard the ripening processes in mushrooms, walnuts, strawberries, fresh-cut apples, bananas, fish, pork, and beef. This review focuses on the antioxidant, antibacterial, and food preservation capabilities of GA-incorporated biodegradable food packaging materials as an eco-friendly alternative to conventional plastic packaging.

Abstract
Bacterial biofilms are the major etiology agent of peri-implant disease. Chemical decontamination is a promising treatment strategy against bacterial biofilms; however, its applications are limited by its low efficiency and poor biocompatibility. In contrast to three conventional cleaners (sterile saline, hydrogen peroxide, and chlorhexidine), this study used resveratrol and naringin solutions to remove mature Staphylococcus aureus and Porphyromonas gingivalis biofilm on sandblasted (with large grit and acid-etched (SLA) titanium surface. To determine changes in surface characteristics, the surface wettability and roughness were measured, and micromorphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy. With crystal violet (CV) and live/dead bacterial staining, residual plaque quantity and composition were measured. The biocompatibility was tested using pH and cytotoxicity, as well as by osteoblasts (MC3T3-E1) adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation, and fibroblasts (L-929) proliferation were also analyzed. It was found that resveratrol and naringin solutions were more effective in restoring surface characteristics and also showed that less plaque and viable bacteria were left. Naringin removed S. aureus biofilms better than chlorhexidine. Alkaline resveratrol and naringin solutions increased cell adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation without any cytotoxicity. Resveratrol increased the expression of mRNA and protein associated with osteogenesis. In conclusion, resveratrol and naringin effectively restored SLA titanium surface characteristics and decontaminated the biofilm with good biocompatibility, suggesting their therapeutic potential as chemical decontaminants. IMPORTANCE Bacterial biofilms are considered the primary etiology of peri-implant disease. Physical cleaning is the most common way to remove bacterial biofilm, but it can cause grooving, melting, and deposition of chemicals that alter the surface of implants, which may hamper biocompatibility and re-osseointegration. Chemical decontamination is one of the most promising treatments but is limited by low efficiency and poor biocompatibility. Our study aims to develop safer, more effective chemical decontaminants for peri-implant disease prevention and treatment. We focus on resveratrol and naringin, two natural compounds, which have shown to be more effective in decontaminating biofilms on dental implant surfaces and exerting better biocompatibility. This research is groundbreaking as it is the first exploration of natural plant extracts' impact on mature bacterial biofilms on rough titanium surfaces. By advancing this knowledge, we seek to contribute to more effective and biocompatible strategies for combating peri-implant diseases, enhancing oral health, and prolonging implant lifespan.

Abstract
Huanglongbing (HLB), associated with the psyllid-vectored phloem-limited bacterium, Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas), is a disease threat to all citrus production worldwide. Currently, there are no sustainable curative or prophylactic treatments available. In this study, we utilized mass spectrometry (MS)-based metabolomics in combination with 3D molecular mapping to visualize complex chemistries within plant tissues to explore how these chemistries change in vivo in HLB-infected trees. We demonstrate how spatial information from molecular maps of branches and single leaves yields insight into the biology not accessible otherwise. In particular, we found evidence that flavonoid biosynthesis is disrupted in HLB-infected trees, and an increase in the polyamine, feruloylputrescine, is highly correlated with an increase in disease severity. Based on mechanistic details revealed by these molecular maps, followed by metabolic modeling, we formulated and tested the hypothesis that CLas infection either directly or indirectly converts the precursor compound, ferulic acid, to feruloylputrescine to suppress the antimicrobial effects of ferulic acid and biosynthetically downstream flavonoids. Using in vitro bioassays, we demonstrated that ferulic acid and bioflavonoids are indeed highly bactericidal to CLas, with the activity on par with a reference antibiotic, oxytetracycline, recently approved for HLB management. We propose these compounds should be evaluated as therapeutics alternatives to the antibiotics for HLB treatment. Overall, the utilized 3D metabolic mapping approach provides a promising methodological framework to identify pathogen-specific inhibitory compounds in planta for potential prophylactic or therapeutic applications.

Abstract
Urinary tract infection caused by Klebsiella, Proteus and Streptococcus is a urease dependent process, hence treatment of these infections by antibacterial compounds lies in inhibition of their virulence factors. The crude methanolic extracts derived from sumac fruit, pomegranate peel and Indian almond leaves were separated into anthocyanin and non-anthocyanin fractions using solid phase cartridges. The inhibitory effect of these fractions was determined on the growth of urease producing species and jack bean urease activity. Known compounds in the fractions were also docked with ureases of different biological origins viz. K. pneumoniae (PDB ID: 8HCN), K. aerogenes (PDB ID: 2KAU), Helicobacter pylori (PDB ID:8HC1)and Canavalia ensiformis (jack bean) (PDB ID: 3LA4) to determine their binding affinities and interaction with the enzyme. All the fractions showed significant inhibition growth for P. mirabilis, S. epidermidis and K.pneumoniae. Among the samples, sumac showed greatest inhibition against all (MIC 6-25 mg.mL-1) while among the fractions, anthocyanin was found to be most active (MIC 6-12 mg/mL). Likewise, all fractions inhibited urease with lowest ICs50 shown by sumac fractions (21-116 μg.mL-1). Out of 39 compounds docked, 27 showed interaction with movable flaps and/or active site of ureases which explains their mode of inhibition.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is characterized by its high resistance to conventional antibiotics, particularly methicillin-resistant (MRSA) strains, making it a predominant pathogen in acute and chronic wound infections. The persistence of acute S. aureus wound infections poses a threat by increasing the incidence of their chronicity. This study investigated the potential of photodynamic activation using phytochemical-antibiotic combinations to eliminate S. aureus under conditions representative of acute wound infections, aiming to mitigate the risk of chronicity. The strategy applied takes advantage of the promising antibacterial and photosensitising properties of phytochemicals, and their ability to act as antibiotic adjuvants. The antibacterial activity of selected phytochemicals (berberine, curcumin, farnesol, gallic acid, and quercetin; 6.25-1000 μg/mL) and antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, fusidic acid, oxacillin, gentamicin, mupirocin, methicillin, and tobramycin; 0.0625-1024 μg/mL) was screened individually and in combination against two S. aureus clinical strains (methicillin-resistant and -susceptible-MRSA and MSSA). The photodynamic activity of the phytochemicals was assessed using a light-emitting diode (LED) system with blue (420 nm) or UV-A (365 nm) variants, at 30 mW/cm2 (light doses of 9, 18, 27 J/cm2) and 5.5 mW/cm2 (light doses of 1.5, 3.3 and 5.0 J/cm2), respectively. Notably, all phytochemicals restored antibiotic activity, with 9 and 13 combinations exhibiting potentiating effects on MSSA and MRSA, respectively. Photodynamic activation with blue light (420 nm) resulted in an 8- to 80-fold reduction in the bactericidal concentration of berberine against MSSA and MRSA, while curcumin caused 80-fold reduction for both strains at the light dose of 18 J/cm2. Berberine and curcumin-antibiotic combinations when subjected to photodynamic activation (420 nm light, 10 min, 18 J/cm2) reduced S. aureus culturability by ≈9 log CFU/mL. These combinations lowered the bactericidal concentration of antibiotics, achieving a 2048-fold reduction for gentamicin and 512-fold reduction for tobramycin. Overall, the dual approach involving antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation and selected phytochemical-antibiotic combinations demonstrated a synergistic effect, drastically reducing the culturability of S. aureus and restoring the activity of gentamicin and tobramycin.

Abstract
This work demonstrated an innovative antimicrobial and biodegradable food packaging film CBDA-10-SA which was prepared by crosslinking a natural polyphenolic truxillic acid (cyclobutane-dicarboxylic acid, CBDA-10) and sodium alginate (SA). The CBDA-10-SA film exhibited improved tensile strength (148 MPa) and UV shielding capabilities. The maximum thermal decomposition temperature was achieved of 249 °C. Compared to SA film, CBDA-10-SA showed increased antibacterial activities. In food packaging test, the CBDA-10-SA inhibited the rapid growth of potential of hydrogen (pH) value, slowed down the weight loss, reduced total plate count (TPC) value of pork, and delayed the spoilage process of pork. Notably, CBDA-10-SA displayed remarkable degradability in soil, with 60 % degrading in four weeks. In this study, CBDA-10-SA showed enhanced physicochemical and mechanical properties compared to traditional SA film. Those improvements make it anticipated to be used in not only food packaging but also mechanical, pharmaceutical, and agricultural fields.

Abstract
Ruminiclostridium papyrosolvens is an anaerobic, mesophilic, and cellulolytic clostridia, promising consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) candidate for producing renewable green chemicals from cellulose, but its genetic transformation has been severely impeded by extracellular biofilm. Here, we analyzed the effects of five different inhibitors with gradient concentrations on R. papyrosolvens growth and biofilm formation. Gallic acid was proved to be a potent inhibitor of biofilm synthesis of R. papyrosolvens. Furthermore, the transformation efficiency of R. papyrosolvens was significantly increased when the cells were treated by the gallic acid, and the mutant strain was successfully obtained by the improved transformation method. Thus, inhibition of biofilm formation of R. papyrosolvens by using gallic acid will contribute to its genetic transformation and efficient metabolic engineering.

Abstract
Gallic acid (GA), a phenolic acid found in fruits and vegetables, has been consumed by humans for centuries. Its extensive health benefits, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties, have been well-documented. GA's potent antioxidant capabilities enable it to neutralize free radicals, reduce oxidative stress, and protect cells from damage. Additionally, GA exerts anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting inflammatory cytokines and enzymes, making it a potential therapeutic agent for inflammatory diseases. It also demonstrates anticancer properties by inhibiting cancer cell growth and promoting apoptosis. Furthermore, GA offers cardiovascular benefits, such as lowering blood pressure, decreasing cholesterol, and enhancing endothelial function, which may aid in the prevention and management of cardiovascular diseases. This review covers the chemical structure, sources, identification and quantification methods, and biological and therapeutic properties of GA, along with its applications in food. As research progresses, the future for GA appears promising, with potential uses in functional foods, pharmaceuticals, and nutraceuticals aimed at improving overall health and preventing disease. However, ongoing research and innovation are necessary to fully understand its functional benefits, address current challenges, and establish GA as a mainstay in therapeutic and nutritional interventions.

Abstract
The hazelnut seed skins (HSS) are by-products from roasting or blanching hazelnuts without direct second utilization. The generation of HSS creates an economic and environmental problem. The object of the study was a comprehensive analysis of the properties for reuse of HSS. Water extraction of industrial HSS was applied (water with sonication of the HSS for 10 min at 90 ℃). The extracts obtained were freeze-dried to facilitate analysis and future application. The HSS and their extracts were analysed. Polyphenols, antioxidants, allergens, antimicrobial properties and instrumental sensory analysis were examined. The total polyphenol content in the samples was 37.8-44.0 mg gallic acid equivalent g-1. Gallic acid was the major phenolic compound. The antioxidant capacity of the samples was 198.9-250.6 mg VCEAC g-1 (vitamin C equivalent) according to the ABTS method and 98.4-106.8 mg VCEAC g-1 in the DPPH method. The extracts inhibited all tested strains of pathogenic bacteria. Allergen content was reduced in HSS and the extracts. Instrumental sensory analysis showed differences between taste parameters and odour profile samples. HSS can be reused in food production as a bacteriostatic, antioxidant additive and sensory-creating factor due to various chemical compounds corresponding with taste and odour.

Abstract
Reducing the risk of wound infection is an urgent issue health priority. Antibacterial polysaccharide-based hydrogels have attracted great attention for infectious wounds, attributed to their safe antimicrobial performance and natural non-toxicity and biodegradability advantages. In this study, the "all-in-one" self-adaptive and injectable cationic guar gum (CG)-based polysaccharide hydrogels (FA-TOB/CG) loaded with bioactive complexes were developed for infectious wound healing. The constructed antioxidant and antibacterial ferulic acid (FA)-tobramycin (TOB) bioactive complexes (FA-TOB) were used as the cross-linking agent and introduced into the CG matrix to construct the FA-TOB/CG hydrogel with a three-dimensional porous structure. The sterilization rates of FA-TOB/CG hydrogel against S. aureus and E. coli reached 98 % and 80 % respectively. In addition, the FA-TOB/CG also exhibits enhanced antioxidant performances (DPPH: > 40 %; ABTS: > 90 %; ·OH: > 50 %). More importantly, FA-TOB/CG hydrogel also showed the ability to sustain the release of FA and TOB. These superiorities of the FA-TOB/CG hydrogel enabled it to provide a moist wound environment and promote wound healing by eliminating bacteria, modulating the local inflammatory response, and accelerating collagen deposition and vascular regeneration. Thus, this study may enlarge a new sight for developing multifunctional dressings by incorporating bioactive complexes into polysaccharide hydrogels for infected wounds.

Abstract
Staphylococcus epidermidis, a component of human microbiota, may also cause life-threatening opportunistic infections. These are becoming increasingly common infections associated with the implantation of various implants. Due to the exhaustion of antibiotic resources, new substances with antimicrobial activity are being sought. The present study examined the antibacterial effect of cinnamic acid and its derivatives and their combinations with β-lactam antibiotics on the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis strains isolated from vascular infections. The data obtained during the research indicated that cinnamic acid and its derivatives, sinapic acid, ferulic acid, and p-coumaric acid, have weak antibacterial activity (MIC values at the level of 2048 and 4096 mg/L). The combination of cinnamic acid and its derivatives with β-lactam antibiotics increases the effectiveness of their action and may demonstrate various pharmacological effects depending on the established cutoff.

Abstract
Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) have specific properties that result from their biosynthesis particularities. Chitosan can prevent pathogenic biofilm development. A wide palette of bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) biological and physical-chemical properties are known. The aim of this study was to develop a hydrogel formulation (SeBNCSFa) based on ferulic acid-grafted chitosan and bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) enriched with SeNPs from Kombucha fermentation (SeNPsK), which could be used as an adjuvant for oral implant integration and other applications. The grafted chitosan and SeBNCSFa were characterized by biochemical and physical-chemical methods. The cell viability and proliferation of HGF-1 gingival fibroblasts were investigated, as well as their in vitro antioxidant activity. The inflammatory response was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) of the proinflammatory mediators (IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β) in cell culture medium. Likewise, the amount of nitric oxide released was measured by the Griess reaction. The antimicrobial activity was also investigated. The grafting degree with ferulic acid was approximately 1.780 ± 0.07% of the total chitosan monomeric units, assuming single-site grafting per monomer. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy evidenced a convolution of BNC and grafted chitosan spectra, and X-ray diffraction analysis highlighted an amorphous rearrangement of the diffraction patterns, suggesting multiple interactions. The hydrogel showed a high degree of cytocompatibility, and enhanced antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial potentials.

Abstract
Chitosan (CS)-based photo-cross-linkable hydrogels have gained increasing attention in biomedical applications. In this study, we grafted CS with gallic acid (GA) by carbodiimide chemistry to prepare the GA-CS conjugate, which was subsequently modified with methacrylic anhydride (MA) modification to obtain the methacrylated GA-CS conjugate (GA-CS-MA). Our results demonstrated that the GA-CS-MA hydrogel not only exhibited improved physicochemical properties but also showed antibacterial, antioxidative, and anti-inflammatory capacity. It showed moderate antibacterial activity and especially showed a more powerful inhibitory effect against Gram-positive bacteria. It modulated macrophage polarization, downregulated pro-inflammatory gene expression, upregulated anti-inflammatory gene expression, and significantly reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) production under lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation. Subcutaneously implanted GA-CS-MA hydrogels induced significantly lower inflammatory responses, as evidenced by less inflammatory cell infiltration, thinner fibrous capsule, and predominately promoted M2 polarization. This study provides a feasible strategy to prepare CS-based photo-cross-linkable hydrogels with improved physicochemical properties for biomedical applications.

Abstract
Bovine mastitis (BM) is the most common bacterial mediated inflammatory disease in the dairy cattle that causes huge economic loss to the dairy industry due to decreased milk quality and quantity. Milk is the essential food in the human diet, and rich in crucial nutrients that helps in lowering the risk of diseases like hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. The main causative agents of the disease include various gram negative, and positive bacteria, along with other risk factors such as udder shape, age, genetic, and environmental factors also contributes much for the disease. Currently, antibiotics, immunotherapy, probiotics, dry cow, and lactation therapy are commonly recommended for BM. However, these treatments can only decrease the rise of new cases but can't eliminate the causative agents, and they also exhibit several limitations. Hence, there is an urgent need of a potential source that can generate a typical and ideal treatment to overcome the limitations and eliminate the pathogens. Among the various sources, medicinal plants and its derived products always play a significant role in drug discovery against several diseases. In addition, they are also known for its low toxicity and minimum resistance features. Therefore, plants and its compounds that possess anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties can serve better in bovine mastitis. In addition, the plants that are serving as a food source and possessing pharmacological properties can act even better in bovine mastitis. Hence, in this evidence-based study, we particularly review the dietary medicinal plants and derived products that are proven for anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects. Moreover, the role of each dietary plant and its compounds along with possible role in the management of bovine mastitis are delineated. In this way, this article serves as a standalone source for the researchers working in this area to help in the management of BM.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Preparation and characterization of nano-emulsion formulations for Asparagus densiflorus aerial and root parts extracts. SIGNIFICANCE Genus Asparagus is known for its antimicrobial and anticancer activities, however, freeze dried powder of aqueous - alcoholic extract prepared in this study, exhibited a limited water solubility, limiting its therapeutic application. Thus, encapsulation of its phytochemicals into nano-emulsion is proposed as a solution to improve water solubility, and facilitate its clinical translation. METHODS the composition of extracts for both aerial and root parts of Asparagus densiflorus was identified by HPLC and LC-MS analysis. Nano-emulsion was prepared via homogenization where a mixture of Castor oil: phosphate buffered saline (10 mM, pH 7.4): Tween 80: PEG 600 in a ratio of 10: 5: 2.5: 2.5, respectively. Nano-emulsion formulations were characterized for particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potential, TEM, viscosity and pH. Then, the antibacterial and anticancer activities of nano-emulsion formulations versus their pure plant counterparts was assessed. RESULTS The analysis of extracts identified several flavonoids, phenolics, and saponins which were reported to have antimicrobial and anticancer activities. Nano-emulsion formulations were monodispersed with droplet sizes ranging from 80.27 ± 2.05 to 111.16 ± 1.97 nm, and polydispersity index ≤0.3. Nano-emulsion formulations enhanced significantly the antibacterial (multidrug resistant bacteria causing skin and dental soft tissues infections) and anticancer (HuH7, HEPG2, H460 and HCT116) activities compared to their pure plant extract counterparts. CONCLUSION Employing a nano-delivery system as a carrier for phytochemicals might be an effective strategy to enhance their pharmacological activity, overcome their limitations, and ultimately increase their potential for clinical applications.

Abstract
Edible plant leaves (EPLs) constitute a major renewable functional plant biomass available all year round, providing an essential source of polyphenols in the global diet. Polyphenols form a large family of antioxidant molecules. They protect against the harmful effects of free radicals, strengthen immunity and stimulate the body's natural defenses thanks to their antibacterial and antiviral functions. This study refers to phenolic compounds from 50 edible plant leaves divided into four categories: green leafy vegetables, underutilized leafy vegetables, leafy spices and leafy drinks. It provides data on the identification, occurrence and pharmacological functions of polyphenols contained in EPLs, and provides a better understanding of trends and gaps in their consumption and study. Certain EPLs, such as moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam.), tea (Camellia sinensis L.) and several leafy spices of the Lamiaceae family, reveal important characteristics and therapeutic potential. The polyphenol composition of EPLs makes them functional plants that offer relevant solutions in the fight against obesity, the management of food insecurity and the prevention of chronic diseases.

Abstract
The increase of multiple drug resistance bacteria significantly diminishes the effectiveness of antibiotic armory and subsequently exaggerates the level of therapeutic failure. Phytoconstituents are exceptional substitutes for resistance-modifying vehicles. The plants appear to be a deep well for the discovery of novel antibacterial compounds. This is owing to the numerous enticing characteristics of plants, they are easily accessible and inexpensive, extracts or chemicals derived from plants typically have significant levels of action against infections, and they rarely cause serious adverse effects. The enormous selection of phytochemicals offers very distinct chemical structures that may provide both novel mechanisms of antimicrobial activity and deliver us with different targets in the interior of the bacterial cell. They can directly affect bacteria or act together with the crucial events of pathogenicity, in this manner decreasing the aptitude of bacteria to create resistance. Abundant phytoconstituents demonstrate various mechanisms of action toward multi drug resistance bacteria. Overall, this comprehensive review will provide insights into the potential of phytoconstituents as alternative treatments for bacterial infections, particularly those caused by multi drug resistance strains. By examining the current state of research in this area, the review will shed light on potential future directions for the development of new antimicrobial therapies.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive bacteria with the greatest impact in the clinical area, due to the high rate of infections and deaths reaching every year. A previous scenario is associated with the bacteria's ability to develop resistance against conventional antibiotic therapies as well as biofilm formation. The above situation exhibits the necessity to reach new effective strategies against this pathogen. Flourensia retinophylla is a medicinal plant commonly used for bacterial infections treatments and has demonstrated antimicrobial effect, although its effect against S. aureus and bacterial biofilms has not been investigated. The purpose of this work was to analyze the antimicrobial and antibiofilm potential of F. retinophylla against S. aureus. The antimicrobial effect was determined using an ethanolic extract of F. retinophylla. The surface charge of the bacterial membrane, the K+ leakage and the effect on motility were determined. The ability to prevent and remove bacterial biofilms was analyzed in terms of bacterial biomass, metabolic activity and viability. The results showed that F. retinophylla presents inhibitory (MIC: 250 µg/mL) and bactericidal (MBC: 500 µg/mL) activity against S. aureus. The MIC extract increased the bacterial surface charge by 1.4 times and the K+ concentration in the extracellular medium by 60%. The MIC extract inhibited the motility process by 100%, 61% and 40% after 24, 48 and 72 h, respectively. The MIC extract prevented the formation of biofilms by more than 80% in terms of biomass production and metabolic activity. An extract at 10 × MIC reduced the metabolic activity by 82% and the viability by ≈50% in preformed biofilms. The results suggest that F. retinophylla affects S. areus membrane and the process of biofilm formation and removal. This effect could set a precedent to use this plant as alternative for antimicrobial and disinfectant therapies to control infections caused by this pathogen. In addition, this shrub could be considered for carrying out a purification process in order to identify the compounds responsible for the antimicrobial and antibiofilm effect.

Abstract
The health of calves has a significant impact on the production of cows and livestock. Some desert plants have pharmacological importance, as they can be used to reduce antibiotic resistance. Our hypothesis is designed to detect Virulent- Multidrug-Resistant and Extended- spectrum Beta- lactamase Enterobacteriaceae (Virulent-MDR-ESBL Enterobacteriaceae and to determine whether Moringa oleifera has antibacterial activity against the detected isolates. A total of 39 Enterobacteriaceae isolates from 28 diarrheic samples were collected from calves aged between 20 days and 20 months from 3 different flocks in North Sinai, Sahl-Eltina region, Egypt. E.coli 46% (18/39), O157 13% (5/39), Klebsiella pneumoniae 41% (16/39). MDR members accounted for 87%, while ESBL isolates accounted for 43%. The antibacterial activity is represented by microdilution. Minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) for the methanol extract of Moringa oleifera ranged from 2.5,5,10, and 25mg/ ml among E.coli isolates, and O157 was susceptible to (2.5mg/ ml), Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates were susceptible to (5-50mg/ ml). Analysis of the methanol extract revealed that ferulic acid was the dominant phenolic compound with a concentration of 29,832 parts per million (ppm). In silico docking study expected the active site of ferulic acid to act on the tyrosine bacterial enzyme through Pi-alkyl, Pi-anion, Carbon hydrogen bonds, and extra ionic attractive interactions with copper ions which can stabilize ferulic acid inside the targeted pocket Diverse virulent gene profiles were observed in E. coli. The Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) was reported in 83% of the isolated E. coli, while the DNA gyrase (gyrA) was harbored in 100% of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates. Various profiles of antibiotic resistance genes for both E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates were distinguished. blaTEM genes were detected in 99% of E. coli and 100% of Klebsiella pneumoniae. Sequence analysis for E. coli strain DRC-North Sinai-Eg was placed in accession numbers (OP955786) for the Shiga toxin 2 gene (Stx2A), (OP997748) and (OP997749) for the Adhesion to host cell gene (Eae). For the hemolysine gene (hylA), the accession number was (OP946183). Klebsiella pneumoniae strain DRC-North Sinai-Eg was placed in (OP946180) for (gyrA). This study has proven the broad range of Moringa oliefera's antibacterial effects in vitro against the virulent-MDR- ESBL E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from North Sinai calves diarrhea. These are congruent with the disability effect on bacterial tyrosinase enzyme through docking study therefore, we recommend the usage of this desert plant as a prospective feed additive, we endorse this as an antibacterial new insight natural source and for the medication of considered pathogens with zoonotic impacts.

Abstract
Iron deficiency remains a public health challenge globally. Prebiotics have the potential to improve iron bioavailability by modulating intestinal bacterial population, increasing SCFA production, and stimulating expression of brush border membrane (BBM) iron transport proteins among iron-deficient populations. This study intended to investigate the potential effects of soluble extracts from the cotyledon and seed coat of three pea (Pisum sativum) varieties (CDC Striker, CDC Dakota, and CDC Meadow) on the expression of BBM iron-related proteins (DCYTB and DMT1) and populations of beneficial intestinal bacteria in vivo using the Gallus gallus model by oral gavage (one day old chicks) with 1 mL of 50 mg/mL pea soluble extract solutions. The seed coat treatment groups increased the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium compared to the cotyledon treatment groups, with CDC Dakota seed coat (dark brown pigmented) recording the highest relative abundance of Bifidobacterium. In contrast, CDC Striker Cotyledon (dark-green-pigmented) significantly increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus (p < 0.05). Subsequently, the two dark-pigmented treatment groups (CDC Striker Cotyledon and CDC Dakota seed coats) recorded the highest expression of DCYTB. Our study suggests that soluble extracts from the pea seed coat and dark-pigmented pea cotyledon may improve iron bioavailability by affecting intestinal bacterial populations.

Abstract
Aquatic products are easily spoiled during storage due to oxidation, endogenous enzymes, and bacteria. At the same time, compared with synthetic antioxidants, based on the antibacterial and antioxidant mechanism of biological agents, the development of natural, nontoxic, low-temperature, better-effect green biological preservatives is more acceptable to consumers. The type and molecular structure of polyphenols affect their antioxidant and antibacterial effectiveness. This review will describe how they achieve their antioxidant and antibacterial effects. And the recent literature on the mechanism and application of polyphenols in the preservation of aquatic products was updated and summarized. The conclusion is that in aquatic products, polyphenols alleviate lipid oxidation, protein degradation and inhibit the growth and reproduction of microorganisms, so as to achieve the effect of storage quality control. And put forward suggestions on the application of the research results in aquatic products. We hope to provide theoretical support for better exploration of the application of polyphenols and aquatic product storage.

Abstract
The food industry requires new production models that include more environmentally friendly waste management practices, considering that the environmental loads of solid waste and wastewater associated with this sector cause damage to the receiving ecosystems. The approach considered in this study focuses on the design and environmental assessment of an enzymatic process for the valorization of ferulic acid present in the effluent of a corn tortilla plant. The ferulic acid can be immobilized on chitosan so that the ferulic acid grafted chitosan can be used as a bioactive film with enhanced antioxidant properties with potential applications in the biotechnology sector. Its real projection approach requires the evaluation of its environmental and economic performance, trying to identify its benefits and potential in the value chain, using the Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) as a phase for the conceptual design of the process and the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology for the environmental evaluation. It should be noted that the TEA indicators are promising, since the values of the financial indicators obtained are representative of the economic profitability, which makes the ferulic acid valorization a viable process. In terms of the environmental impact of the process, the buffer dose and the chitosan production process are identified as the main critical points. This double benefit in environmental and economic terms shows that the valorization of ferulic acid for chitosan functionalization is a promising alternative to improve the sustainability performance of corn processing.

Sausage is susceptible to oxidative changes in lipids and microbial spoilage due to the presence of water, fat, protein, and vitamins. Bee pollen (BP) as a source of potential antioxidants and antibacterial compounds can effectively prevent lipid peroxidation and microbial spoilage in meat products. The aim of the present study was to investigate the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of BP and the effects of nano/microparticles of bee pollen extract (n/m BP) at a concentration of 125 and 250 mg/100 g meat on the oxidative stability and microbial growth of high-fat sausage during 30 days of storage at 4°C. The formation of BP particles in the nano/micro range was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. High concentrations of total phenolic compounds (28.26 ± 0.10 mg GAE/g BP) with antioxidant activity (EC50 = 5.4 ± 0.07 mg/mL) were detected in BP. Based on the microdilution assay, the minimum inhibitory concentration of n/m BP for all test bacteria was 1000 (μg/mL) and the minimum bactericidal concentration of n/m BP was 2000 (μg/mL) for Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus and 4000 (μg/mL) for Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The n/m BP treatment (250 mg/100 g meat) showed a higher pH value (p < .05) and lower TBARS values (p < .05) than the ascorbic acid treatment (100 mg/100 g meat) and the control during the storage period. The microbial analysis showed that the addition of n/m BP led to a significant decrease (p < .05) in the total bacterial count, coliforms, S. aureus, and fungal population compared to the other samples. The results show that the addition of n/m BP (125 mg/100 g) can improve the texture, taste, and overall acceptability of the sausage compared to the control sample. In conclusion, this study suggests that BP can replace synthetic antioxidants in high-fat sausages at the nano/microparticle level.

Abstract
Lignin is a complex polymer found in the cell walls of plants, providing structural support and protection against pathogens. By modifying lignin composition and structure, scientists aim to optimize plant defense responses and increase resistance to pathogens. This can be achieved through various genetic engineering techniques which involve manipulating the genes responsible for lignin synthesis. By either up regulating or down regulating specific genes, researchers can alter the lignin content, composition, or distribution in plant tissues. Reducing lignin content in specific tissues like leaves can improve the effectiveness of defense mechanisms by allowing for better penetration of antimicrobial compounds. Overall, Lignin modification through techniques has shown promising results in enhancing various plants resistance against pathogens. Furthermore, lignin modification can have additional benefits beyond pathogen resistance. It can improve biomass processing for biofuel production by reducing lignin recalcitrance, making the extraction of sugars from cellulose more efficient. The complexity of lignin biosynthesis and its interactions with other plant components make it a challenging target for modification. Additionally, the potential environmental impact and regulatory considerations associated with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) require careful evaluation. Ongoing research aims to further optimize this approach and develop sustainable solutions for crop protection.

Abstract
Quorum sensing (QS) has a central role in biofilm lifestyle and antimicrobial resistance, and disrupting these signaling pathways is a promising strategy to control bacterial pathogenicity and virulence. In this study, the efficacy of three structurally related benzaldehydes (4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde (vanillin) and 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxybenzaldehyde (syringaldehyde)) in disrupting the las and pqs systems of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was investigated using bioreporter strains and computational simulations. Additionally, these benzaldehydes were combined with tobramycin and ciprofloxacin antibiotics to evaluate their ability to increase antibiotic efficacy in preventing and eradicating P. aeruginosa biofilms. To this end, the total biomass, metabolic activity and culturability of the biofilm cells were determined. In vitro assays results indicated that the aromatic aldehydes have potential to inhibit the las and pqs systems by > 80 %. Molecular docking studies supported these findings, revealing the aldehydes binding in the same pocket as the natural ligands or receptor proteins (LasR, PQSA, PQSE, PQSR). Benzaldehydes were shown to act as virulence factor attenuators, with vanillin achieving a 48 % reduction in pyocyanin production. The benzaldehyde-tobramycin combination led not only to a 60 % reduction in biomass production but also to a 90 % reduction in the metabolic activity of established biofilms. A similar result was observed when benzaldehydes were combined with ciprofloxacin. 4-Hydroxybenzaldehyde demonstrated relevant action in increasing biofilm susceptibility to ciprofloxacin, resulting in a 65 % reduction in biomass. This study discloses, for the first time, that the benzaldehydes studied are potent QS inhibitors and also enhancers of antibiotics antibiofilm activity against P. aeruginosa.

Abstract
This review explores the potential of antimicrobial metabolites derived from Caucasian medicinal plants as alternatives to conventional antibiotics. With the rise of antibiotic resistance posing a global health threat, there is a pressing need to investigate alternative sources of antimicrobial agents. Caucasian medicinal plants have traditionally been used for their therapeutic properties, and recent research has highlighted their potential as sources of antimicrobial compounds. Representatives of 15 families of Caucasian medicinal plant extracts (24 species) have been explored for their efficacy against these pathogens. The effect of these plants on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi is discussed in this paper. By harnessing the bioactive metabolites present in these plants, this study aims to contribute to the development of new antimicrobial treatments that can effectively combat bacterial infections while minimizing the risk of resistance emergence. Herein we discuss the following classes of bioactive compounds exhibiting antimicrobial activity: phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins, terpenes, saponins, alkaloids, and sulfur-containing compounds of Allium species. The review discusses the pharmacological properties of selected Caucasian medicinal plants, the extraction and characterization of these antimicrobial metabolites, the mechanisms of action of antibacterial and antifungal plant compounds, and their potential applications in clinical settings. Additionally, challenges and future directions in the research of antimicrobial metabolites from Caucasian medicinal plants are addressed.

Abstract
Human cognition fundamentally depends on memory. Alzheimer's disease exhibits a strong correlation with a decline in this factor. Phosphodiesterase-4 B (PDE4B) plays a crucial role in neurodegenerative disorders, and its inhibition is one of the promising approaches for memory enhancement. This study aimed to identify secondary metabolites in white cabbage, coffee, and red onion extracts and identify their molecular interaction with PDE4B by in silico and in vitro experiments. Crushed white cabbage and red onion were macerated separately with ethanol to yield respective extracts, and ground coffee was boiled with water to produce aqueous extract. Thin layer chromatography (TLC)-densitometry was used to examine the phytochemicals present in white cabbage, coffee, and red onion extracts. Molecular docking studies were performed to know the interaction of test compounds with PDE4B. TLC-densitometry analysis showed that chlorogenic acid and quercetin were detected as major compounds in coffee and red onion extracts, respectively. In silico studies revealed that alpha-tocopherol (binding free energy (∆Gbind) = -38.00 kcal/mol) has the strongest interaction with PDE4B whereas chlorogenic acid (∆Gbind = -21.50 kcal/mol) and quercetin (∆Gbind = -17.25 kcal/mol) exhibited moderate interaction. In vitro assay showed that the combination extracts (cabbage, coffee, and red onion) had a stronger activity (half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) = 0.12 ± 0.03 µM) than combination standards (sinigrin, chlorogenic acid, and quercetin) (IC50 = 0.17 ± 0.03 µM) and rolipram (IC50 = 0.15 ± 0.008 µM). Thus, the combination extracts are a promising cognitive enhancer by blocking PDE4B activity.

Abstract
The restriction on the use of antibiotics in poultry has led to an increase in the use of natural products that could serve as alternatives to antibiotics. Mushrooms contain bioactive compounds that exhibit antifungal, antiparasitic, antibacterial, antioxidant, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic properties. Hence, they are being tested, revealing as performance-enhancing natural feed additives for livestock. This review focused on the role of different species of mushrooms commonly used in poultry on the performance, immunomodulatory actions, cholesterolemic properties, and meat quality of poultry birds. Different studies reviewed show that mushrooms could positively impact poultry production, improve growth performance, modulate immune response, exert tissue antioxidant activity, influence intestinal morphology, enhance gut microbiome, and improve lipid profile. The variations in their efficacy could be attributed to the variations in physicochemical properties of different species and dosage levels applied in the experiments. However, the use of mushrooms as a natural product supplement is in its infancy, and more basic, pilot and large-scale research is required to make it a viable approach for improving immune responses in the poultry industry.

Abstract
Natural antibacterials have stood out in the last decade due to the growing demand for reducing chemical preservatives in food. In particular, natural phenolic compounds are secondary metabolites produced by plants for numerous functions including antimicrobial defence. Polyphenol has significant antimicrobial activity, but its antimicrobial properties are affected by the cell structure difference of bacteria, the concentration, type, and extraction method of polyphenol, and the treatment time of bacteria exposed to polyphenol. Therefore, this paper analyzed the antibacterial activity and mechanism of polyphenol as an antimicrobial agent. However, there remained significant considerations, including the interaction of polyphenols and food matrix, environmental temperature, and the effect of color and odor of some polyphenols on sensory properties of aquatic products, and the additive amount of polyphenols. On this basis, the application strategies of polyphenols as the antimicrobial agent in aquatic products preservation were reviewed.

Abstract
Aging significantly impacts several age-related neurological problems, such as stroke, brain tumors, oxidative stress, neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and dementia), neuroinflammation, and neurotoxicity. Current treatments for these conditions often come with side effects like hallucinations, dyskinesia, nausea, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal distress. Given the widespread availability and cultural acceptance of natural remedies, research is exploring the potential effectiveness of plants in common medicines. The ancient medical system used many botanical drugs and medicinal plants to treat a wide range of diseases, including age-related neurological problems. According to current clinical investigations, berries improve motor and cognitive functions and protect against age-related neurodegenerative diseases. Additionally, berries may influence signaling pathways critical to neurotransmission, cell survival, inflammation regulation, and neuroplasticity. The abundance of phytochemicals in berries is believed to contribute to these potentially neuroprotective effects. This review aimed to explore the potential benefits of berries as a source of natural neuroprotective agents for age-related neurological disorders.

Abstract
Bee products are considered true wonders of nature, used since ancient times, and studied even today for their various biological activities. In this study, we hypothesise that Romanian bee products from different origins (micro apiary products, lyophilised forms, commercial) exhibit distinct chemical compositions, influencing their biological activities. An LC-MS analysis revealed varied polyphenolic content patterns, with cumaric acid, ferulic acid, rosmarinic acid, and quercitine identified in significant amounts across all samples. Primary anti-inflammatory evaluation phases, including the inhibition of haemolysis values and protein denaturation, unveiled a range of protective effects on red blood cells (RBC) and blood proteins, contingent upon the sample concentration. Antimicrobial activity assessments against 12 ATCC strains and 6 pathogenic isolates demonstrated varying efficacy, with propolis samples showing low efficacy, royal jelly forms displaying moderate effectiveness, and apilarnin forms exhibiting good inhibitory activity, mostly against Gram-positive bacteria. Notably, the lyophilised form emerged as the most promising sample, yielding the best results across the biological activities assessed. Furthermore, molecular docking was employed to elucidate the inhibitory potential of compounds identified from these bee products by targeting putative bacterial and fungal proteins. Results from the docking analysis showed rosmarinic and rutin exhibited strong binding energies and interactions with the putative antimicrobial proteins of bacteria (-9.7 kcal/mol to -7.6 kcal/mol) and fungi (-9.5 kcal/mol to -8.1 kcal/mol). The findings in this study support the use of bee products for antimicrobial purposes in a biologically active and eco-friendly proportion while providing valuable insights into their mechanism of action.

Abstract
AIMS The research aimed to optimize the ultrasound-assisted extraction of secondary metabolites and the antibacterial activity of the plant species Geranium robertianum. The phytochemical profiles of the optimized extracts, as well as their antibacterial and synergistic activity with an antibiotic and their potential mechanisms of action and cytotoxicity, were examined. METHODS AND RESULTS Response Surface Methodology was used to optimize extraction conditions. Optimized ethanol and acetone extracts were tested via microdilution, checkerboard, time-kill kinetics, and cell membrane permeability methods. The extracts displayed broad antibacterial activity with minimum inhibitory concentrations ranging from 1.25 to 20 mg ml-1. In addition, the extract synergistically reacted with gentamicin against gentamicin-resistant strains of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, enhancing the efficacy of the antibiotic up to 32-fold. The extracts demonstrated strain-dependent bactericidal activity in a 24-h time interval. They increase the permeability of the cell membrane, thus disrupting its normal functioning. The cytotoxic concentration (CC50) on human keratinocytes was 1771.24 ± 5.78 µg ml-1 for ethanol extract, and 958.01 ± 6.14 µg ml-1 for acetone extract. Kaempferol, ellagic acid, quercetin, and rutin were recognized as the main components in both extracts. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study indicate that the extracts of G. robertianum can be considered as potential natural antibacterial agents in the control of microorganisms.

Abstract
Self-healing hydrogel is a promising soft material for applications in wound dressings, drug delivery, tissue engineering, biomimetic electronic skin, and wearable electronic devices. However, it is a challenge to fabricate the self-healing hydrogels without external stimuli. Inspired by mussel, the metal-catechol complexes were introduced into the hydrogel systems to prepare the mussel-inspired hydrogels by regulating the gelation kinetics of Fe3+ crosslinkers with gallic acid (GA) in this research. The amine-functionalized carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was grafted with GA and then chelated with Fe3+ to form a multi-response system. The crosslinking of carboxymethyl cellulose-ethylenediamine-gallic acid (CEG) hydrogel was controlled by adjusting the pH to affect the iron coordination chemistry, which could enhance the self-healing properties and mechanical strength of hydrogels. In addition, the CEG hydrogel exhibited great antibacterial and antioxidant properties. And the CEG hydrogel could strongly adhere to the skin tissue. The adhesion strength of CEG hydrogel on pigskin was 11.44 kPa, which is higher than that of commercial wound dressings (∼5 kPa). Moreover, the thixotropy of the CEG hydrogel was confirmed with rheological test. In summary, it has great potential in the application field of wound dressing.

Among these, phenolic compounds have garnered significant attention for their diverse therapeutic applications. This review examines the methodologies employed in the extraction and purification of phenolic compounds from seaweed, emphasizing their importance in unlocking the full potential of these oceanic treasures. The article provides a comprehensive overview of the structural diversity and biological activities of seaweed-derived phenolics, elucidating their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. Furthermore, it explores the impact of extraction techniques, including conventional methods and modern green technologies, on the yield and quality of phenolic extracts. The purification strategies for isolating specific phenolic compounds are also discussed, shedding light on the challenges and advancements in this field. Additionally, the review highlights the potential applications of seaweed-derived phenolics in various industries, such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and functional foods, underscoring the economic value of these compounds. Finally, future perspectives and research directions are proposed to encourage continued exploration of seaweed phenolics, fostering a deeper understanding of their therapeutic potential and promoting sustainable practices in the extraction and purification processes. Abstract
The formation of dual-layer asymmetric porous structures in surfactant-based systems is significantly influenced by emulsions. Surfactants self-assemble to alter the conformational arrangement of polysaccharides, while gravity disrupts the initial uniformity of the established equilibrium droplet concentration gradient in the emulsion, thus achieving delamination. Specifically, high-speed rotation and non-instantaneous freezing allow the gelatin solution to form two different states of foam layers. The integrated dual-layer asymmetric porous structure, composed of polysaccharides and tannic acid, is constructed with gelatin as a skeleton and surfactant. This innovative approach eliminates the need to consider the toxicity of chemically synthesized surfactants and expands the concept of gelatin utilization. This intriguing structure exhibits a variety of desirable characteristics within 30 days (e.g., tailorable performance, ultrarapid antioxidant activity, efficient antibacterial activity, low differential blood clotting index, and good hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility), suggesting its potential as a valuable reference for applying hierarchical porous structures, thereby offering more formulation flexibility for biomaterials with adjustable properties.

Abstract
Pecan shell is considered an agricultural waste; however, it contains various bioactive compounds with potential inhibitory effect against microorganisms. This study evaluated the antimicrobial efficacy of pecan shell extract (PSE) in vitro using disc-diffusion method and in vivo on blueberries as an antimicrobial coating using pullulan. For in vitro study, 5 and 10 % of aqueous (A-PSE) or ethanol pecan shell extract (E-PSE) incorporated into pullulan film were tested against different bacterial and fungal strains. Pullulan film disc was used as control. The diameter of growth inhibition (mm) around discs was measured. For in vivo study, PSE-P (5 % w/v aqueous pecan shell extract+5 % w/v pullulan), P (5 % w/v pullulan) or control (water) were spray coated on blueberries inoculated (∼5 log CFU/g) with Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enterica or Staphylococcus aureus; and stored at 4 °C, 50 ± 10 % RH for 15 days. The effect of antimicrobial coating against pathogens and its impact on quality during storage were determined. A-PSE and E-PSE films were more effective against Gram-positive bacteria and showed no antifungal effect at tested concentrations when evaluated in vitro. Immediately after coating on blueberries, PSE-P significantly reduced Listeria monocytogenes by 2 log CFU/g and lowered survival until day 5 than control or P. Native aerobic microbial population was reduced (P < 0.05) by 0.7 log CFU/g immediately after coating. PSE-P coating or storage time had no significant effect (P > 0.05) on the survival of S. enterica, S. aureus and native fungal population. PSE-P maintained the firmness of blueberry with no significant effect on its color, TSS, and pH during 15 days storage. PSE-P significantly reduced (P < 0.05) the spoilage rate by 21 % than control (28.5 %) and P (37 %); and minimized (P < 0.05) weight loss during storage. Pecan shell extracts show promise as a potential antimicrobial compound whose application on various food products or packaging material could be further explored.

Abstract
Dairy products are highly susceptible to contamination from microorganisms. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and propolis film as protective coatings for cheese. For this, microbiological analyses were carried out over the cheese' ripening period, focusing on total mesophilic bacteria, yeasts and moulds, lactic acid bacteria, total coliforms, Escherichia coli, and Enterobacteriaceae. Physicochemical parameters (pH, water activity, colour, phenolic compounds content) were also evaluated. The statistical analysis (conducted using ANOVA and PERMANOVA) showed a significant interaction term between the HPMC film and propolis (factor 1) and storage days (factor 2) with regard to the dependent variables: microbiological and physicochemical parameters. A high level of microbial contamination was identified at the baseline. However, the propolis films were able to reduce the microbial count. Physicochemical parameters also varied with storage time, with no significant differences found for propolis-containing films. Overall, the addition of propolis to the film influenced the cheeses' colour and the quantification of phenolic compounds. Regarding phenolic compounds, their loss was verified during storage, and was more pronounced in films with a higher percentage of propolis. The study also showed that, of the three groups of phenolic compounds (hydroxybenzoic acids, hydroxycinnamic acids, and flavonoids), hydroxycinnamic acids showed the most significant losses. Overall, this study reveals the potential of using HPMC/propolis films as a coating for cheese in terms of microbiological control and the preservation of physicochemical properties.

Abstract
The microbial consortium FA12 that can release ferulic acid (FA) by fermenting distiller's grains was screened from Daqu. Taibaiella, Comamonadaceae, and Ochrobacum were highly abundant in FA12 by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. In the process of long-term acclimation with distiller's grains as a medium, the biomass of FA12 remained stable, and the pH value of fermentation liquid was also relatively stable. Meanwhile, the activities of cellulase, xylanase, and feruloyl esterase secreted by FA12 were stable in the ranges of 0.2350-0.4470, 0.1917-0.3078, and 0.1103-0.1595 U/mL, respectively, and the release of FA could reach 133.77 μg/g. It is proven that the microbial consortium has good genetic stability. In addition, the structural changes of lignocellulose in distiller's grains before and after fermentation were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and the changes of distiller's grains weight and lignocellulose content before and after fermentation were also detected. These results all confirmed that FA12 had the function of degrading distiller's grains. In this study, we explored a method to use microbial communities to release FA from distiller's grains and degrade lignocellulose in the waste, which opened up a new way for the application of the high value of lost waste.

Abstract
Sinapic acid (SA) and ferulic acid (FA) are bioactive compounds used in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries due to their antioxidant properties. In this work, we studied the photophysical properties of SA and FA in different solvents and concentrations and their interactions with caffeine (CF), using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), fluorescence spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The findings show that the quantum yield, fluorescence lifetime, radiative decay rates, and non-radiative decay rates of SA and FA are influenced by the concentrations and solvent polarity. The interaction between SA and FA with CF was also studied using UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. The results indicate that the CF quenched the fluorescence intensity of SA and FA by static quenching due to the formation of a non-fluorescent complex. The van't Hoff equation suggests that the van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonds force were responsible for the interaction between SA and CF, as indicated by a negative change in enthalpy (Δ H o < 0) and a negative change in entropy (Δ S o < 0). On the other hand, the interaction between FA and CF was primarily controlled by electrostatic force, as indicated by a negative change in enthalpy (Δ H o < 0) and a positive change in entropy (Δ S o > 0). The negative change in Gibbs free energy (Δ G o ) indicates that both compounds underwent a spontaneous binding process.

Abstract
Folk medicine is widely used in Angola, even for human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) in spite of the fact that the reference treatment is available for free. Aiming to validate herbal remedies in use, we selected nine medicinal plants and assessed their antitrypanosomal activity. A total of 122 extracts were prepared using different plant parts and solvents. A total of 15 extracts from seven different plants exhibited in vitro activity (>70% at 20 µg/mL) against Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense bloodstream forms. The dichloromethane extract of Nymphaea lotus (leaves and leaflets) and the ethanolic extract of Brasenia schreberi (leaves) had IC50 values ≤ 10 µg/mL. These two aquatic plants are of particular interest. They are being co-applied in the form of a decoction of leaves because they are considered by local healers as male and female of the same species, the ethnotaxon "longa dia simbi". Bioassay-guided fractionation led to the identification of eight active molecules: gallic acid (IC50 0.5 µg/mL), methyl gallate (IC50 1.1 µg/mL), 2,3,4,6-tetragalloyl-glucopyranoside, ethyl gallate (IC50 0.5 µg/mL), 1,2,3,4,6-pentagalloyl-β-glucopyranoside (IC50 20 µg/mL), gossypetin-7-O-β-glucopyranoside (IC50 5.5 µg/mL), and hypolaetin-7-O-glucoside (IC50 5.7 µg/mL) in B. schreberi, and 5-[(8Z,11Z,14Z)-heptadeca-8,11,14-trienyl] resorcinol (IC50 5.3 µg/mL) not described to date in N. lotus. Five of these active constituents were detected in the traditional preparation. This work provides the first evidence for the ethnomedicinal use of these plants in the management of sleeping sickness in Angola.

Abstract
Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm is a community of bacteria that adhere to live or non-living surfaces and are encapsulated by an extracellular polymeric substance. Unlike individual planktonic cells, biofilms possess a notable inherent resistance to sanitizers and antibiotics. Overcoming this resistance is a substantial barrier in the medical and food industries. Hence, while antibiotics are ineffective in eradicating P. aeruginosa biofilm, scientists have explored alternate strategies, including the utilization of natural compounds as a novel treatment option. To this end, curcumin, carvacrol, thymol, eugenol, cinnamaldehyde, coumarin, catechin, terpinene-4-ol, linalool, pinene, linoleic acid, saponin, and geraniol are the major natural compounds extensively utilized for the management of the P. aeruginosa biofilm community. Noteworthy, the exact interaction of natural compounds and the biofilm of this bacterium is not elucidated yet; however, the interference with the quorum sensing system and the inhibition of autoinducer production in P. aeruginosa are the main possible mechanisms. Noteworthy, the use of different drug platforms can overcome some drawbacks of natural compounds, such as insolubility in water, limited oral bioavailability, fast metabolism, and degradation. Additionally, drug platforms can deliver different antibiofilm agents simultaneously, which enhances the antibiofilm potential of natural compounds. This article explores many facets of utilizing natural compounds to inhibit and eradicate P. aeruginosa biofilms. It also examines the techniques and protocols employed to enhance the effectiveness of these compounds.

Abstract
In abdominal wall defect repair, surgical site infection (SSI) remains the primary cause of failure, while complications like visceral adhesions present significant challenges following patch implantation. We designed a Janus multifunctional hydrogel patch (JMP) with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-adhesive properties. The patch comprises two distinct layers: a pro-healing layer and an anti-adhesion layer. The pro-healing layer was created by a simple mixture of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), quaternized chitosan (QCS), and gallic acid (GA), crosslinked to form PVA/QCS/GA (PQG) hydrogels through GA's self-assembly effect and hydrogen bonding. Additionally, the PVA anti-adhesive layer was constructed using a drying-assisted salting method, providing a smooth and dense physical barrier to prevent visceral adhesion while offering essential mechanical support to the abdominal wall. The hydrogel patch demonstrates widely adjustable mechanical properties, exceptional biocompatibility, and potent antimicrobial properties, along with a sustained and stable release of antioxidants. In rat models of skin and abdominal wall defects, the JMP effectively promoted tissue healing by controlling infection, inhibiting inflammation, stimulating neovascularization, and successfully preventing the formation of visceral adhesions. These compelling results highlight the JMP's potential to improve the success rate of abdominal wall defect repair and reduce surgical complications.

Abstract
Investigating the application of innovative antimicrobial surface coatings on medical devices is an important field of research. Many of these coatings have significant drawbacks, including biocompatibility, coating stability and the inability to effectively combat multiple drug-resistant bacteria. In this research, we developed an antibiofilm surface coating for medical catheters using biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (b-Cs-AgNPs) developed using leaves extract of Calliandra surinamensis. Various characterization techniques were employed to thoroughly characterize the synthesized b-Cs-AgNPs and c-AgNPs. b-Cs-AgNPs were compatible with human normal kidney cells and chicken embryos. It did not trigger any skin inflammatory response in in vivo rat model. b-Cs-AgNPs demonstrated potent zone of inhibition of 19.09 mm when subjected to the disc diffusion method in E. coli confirming strong antibacterial property. Different anti-bacterial assays including liquid growth curve, colony counting assay, biofilm formation assay supported the potent antimicrobial efficacy of b-Cs-AgNPs alone and when coated to medical grade catheters. Mechanistic studies reveal the presence of ferulic acid, that was important for the synthesis of b-AgNPs along with enhanced antibacterial effects of b-Cs-AgNPs compared to c-AgNPs, supported by molecular docking analysis. These results together demonstrated the effective role b-Cs-AgNPs in combating infections and mitigating biofilm formations, highlighting their need for further study in the field of biomedical applications.

Abstract
This is a comparative study to evaluate the effectiveness of six pomegranate peel extracts (PPEs) as antibacterial and antiproliferative agents. The Six PPEs were prepared using four solvent systems and each filtrate was concentrated to a gummy material to be used in the evaluation. The well-diffusion method was used to evaluate their antimicrobial activity against bacteria typically associated with food spoilage: Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, and three Bacillus species. The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium (MTT) was used to evaluate the cytotoxicity against colorectal carcinoma cells (HCT116), prostate adenocarcinoma (PC3), ovarian cancer cells (SKOV-3), and fibroblasts (MRC-5). The antioxidant evaluation was done using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH) assay. The pH of the water-containing extracts was acidic and almost the same over 6 weeks. The six PPEs inhibited the bacterial growth in a comparable level to standard antibiotics. The effectiveness of each extract was dependent on the bacterial strain, and the Listeria showed a remarkable inhibition when exposed to the aqueous extract prepared at room temperature (RT). The aqueous (RT) and methanol PPEs had a significant antioxidant scavenging capability and a remarkable cytotoxic activity against the PC3 with half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 0.1 μg/mL. The boiled aqueous extract exhibited antiproliferative activity against HCT116 with an IC50 of 21.45 μg/mL. The effect on SKOV-3 and fibroblasts was insignificant. With the exception of butanol, the antioxidant screening shows an inverse correlation between the polarity of the extraction solvent and the IC50 exhibited by the PPEs. The variation in the effectiveness of PPEs is suggested to be due to variable soluble bioactive compounds that may interact differently with different cells, though water-containing extracts are promising antibacterial agents. The findings clearly show that pomegranate peel possessed the potential to be an eco-friendly novel source for natural compounds that can be implemented in the food industry as a natural antimicrobial and natural food additive to prevent foodborne illnesses.
