Abstract
Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) have improved infertility treatment but reproductive outcomes remain challenging. Nutrient supplementation is being explored to enhance pregnancy rates, increase live birth rates, and reduce miscarriage rates in females undergoing ART. Nutrients like folic acid, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants have shown potential benefits, yet conflicting results exist. Live birth rates may also be influenced by nutrient supplementation, with coenzyme Q10 and vitamin D showing promise. Miscarriage rates may be reduced with nutrients such as vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, although more research is needed for definitive conclusions. Scientific and medical literature databases such as Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Web of Science were queried to identify relevant English publications adhering to predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Various reproductive metrics, encompassing biochemical pregnancy rate, clinical pregnancy rate, ongoing pregnancy rate, implantation rate, live birth rates, and miscarriage rates, were assessed as clinical endpoints. The study population included 996 female subjects receiving ART. Two studies performed investigations on subjects diagnosed with unexplained infertility, two studies specifically included polycystic ovary syndrome patients, and five studies did not provide any specific information on the type of infertility or subfertility. All studies reported on the clinical/ongoing pregnancy rate, among which four included studies observed a significantly higher rate. Out of the four studies that reported on implantation rates, three found significantly higher rates in treatment groups. Out of the three studies that reported on biochemical pregnancy rates, two studies found significantly higher rates in treatment groups. With respect to the clinical outcomes that were studied in this analysis, variable effects of nutritional supplementation on reproductive parameters were observed. Some studies reported significantly higher rates of clinical/ongoing pregnancy, implantation, biochemical pregnancy, and live birth, while no significant difference was found in miscarriage rates.

Abstract
The receptive phase of the uterus is marked by structural and functional maturation of the endometrium. During this limited time span, the blastocyst competency is superimposed on the receptive endometrium. It is a well-known fact that lipid signalling in early-stage pregnancy has a crucial role in successful embryogenesis. In our study, CD-1 mouse uteri after normal and in vitro fertilization (IVF) were investigated at 6.5, 8.5, and 10.5 days of pregnancy. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight imaging mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography coupled tandem mass spectrometry were used for identification of phosphatidylcholine (PC) lipid structures. In the embryonal tissues, PC 32:0 and PC 34:0 were increased, while in the antemesometrial (AM) decidua the two 20:4-containing PCs, PC 36:4 and PC 38:4 were increased. In transferred uterus samples, higher expressions of PC 34:0, PC 34:1, PC 34:2, PC 36:1, and PC 36:2 in mesometrial decidua were seen, whereas the two 20:4-containing PCs, PC 36:4 and PC 38:4 showed increased expression in the AM and lateral decidua. This paper shows a significant spatio-temporal change in lipid metabolism during IVF procedures for the first time.

Abstract
Infertility affects 15% of the population in developed countries, and its prevalence is increasing. Fertility can be influenced by different factors. Although key factors like maternal age cannot be changed, there is growing evidence that other modifiable factors, such as diet, can have an impact on fertility. Diet has become increasingly important in recent years for a number of reasons: the new trend toward a healthy lifestyle, the higher prevalence of certain digestive disorders, a lack of time that leads people to consume more prepared and processed food, and personal choice to not eat meat, among others. To meet these needs, several diets have recently become popular, such as the Mediterranean diet, known as the gold standard of health; the DASH diet, known for preventing hypertension; the Western diet, characterized by processed food; the ketogenic diet, characterized by low carbohydrate intake; and the vegetarian diet, which is the choice for people who do not eat meat or animal by-products. Diets present a unique composition characterized by the presence or absence of specific nutrients, which have also been associated with male and female fertility individually. This review assesses the impact of these diets and of macro- and micronutrients on both female and male fertility.

Abstract
In women who are getting older, the quantity and quality of their follicles or oocytes and decline. This is characterized by decreased ovarian reserve function (DOR), fewer remaining oocytes, and lower quality oocytes. As more women choose to delay childbirth, the decline in fertility associated with age has become a significant concern for modern women. The decline in oocyte quality is a key indicator of ovarian aging. Many studies suggest that age-related changes in oocyte energy metabolism may impact oocyte quality. Changes in oocyte energy metabolism affect adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) production, but how related products and proteins influence oocyte quality remains largely unknown. This review focuses on oocyte metabolism in age-related ovarian aging and its potential impact on oocyte quality, as well as therapeutic strategies that may partially influence oocyte metabolism. This research aims to enhance our understanding of age-related changes in oocyte energy metabolism, and the identification of biomarkers and treatment methods.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to assess the effect of increased omega-3 consumption on fertilization rates and the probability of women getting pregnant. This study is needed because different perspectives exist regarding the use of omega-3 fatty acids in enhancing fertility among women with reproductive issues, and information for those planning a spontaneous pregnancy is limited. Methods PubMed, Clinical Trials, CINAHL/EBSCO, Medline Complete, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar were searched for articles published until April 2021, and the search was limited to articles in English language. The search strategy included the following key words: "in-vitro fertilization (IVF)," "intracytoplasmic sperm injection techniques (ICSI)," "pregnancy," "omega-3 fatty acid," "alpha-linolenic acid," "eicosapentaenoic acid," "docosahexaenoic acid," "n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid," and "fish oil and seafood." Studies reporting female fertility occurring naturally or IVF/ICSI concurrent with omega-3 intake were included. Retrospective studies, studies including postmenopausal women, and unevenly matched control and study groups were excluded. To assess bias, we used the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions, version 5.1.0. To synthesize the findings from the studies included in this review, a meta-analysis was conducted using calculated or extracted odds ratios (OR) of clinical pregnancies and fertilization rates for each group in each study. Results We included six trials involving 1789 women who received fertility treatment, four trials involving 2607 women who conceived naturally, and three trials involving 1725 oocytes for fertility rates. Aggregated ORs for the effects of omega-3 on pregnancies were 1.74, 1.36, and 2.14 for women who received fertility treatment, those who conceived naturally, and fertilization rate, respectively. All these results were significant (p ≤ 0.01), although they had high heterogeneity I2>68 %. Conclusion This systematic review and meta-analysis suggest that omega-3 intake significantly improves women's pregnancy and fertilization rates; however, the high heterogeneity in this review somewhat limits its interpretation. Therefore, further prospective randomized studies are necessary to better understand this relationship.

Abstract
Female cancer survivors have a higher chance of experiencing infertility than females without a history of cancer diagnosis. This risk remains high despite advances in fertility treatments. There is a need to augment fertility treatments with cost-effective methods such as nutritional guidance to improve fertility chances. The aim of this review article is to connect the current literature on cancer survivorship nutrition and fertility nutrition, focusing on the importance of integrating nutritional guidance into fertility counseling, assessment, and treatment for female cancer survivors. Consuming a healthful diet comprising whole grains, soy, fruits, vegetables, seafood, and unsaturated fats has improved both female fertility and cancer survivorship. Similarly, maintaining a healthy body weight also improves female fertility and cancer survivorship. Therefore, dietary interventions to support female cancer survivors with fertility challenges are of immense importance. The period of follow-up fertility counseling and assessment after cancer treatment may provide a unique opportunity for implementing nutritional guidance for female cancer survivors. Dietary interventions are a promising strategy to improve pregnancy chances and overall quality of life among female cancer survivors; thus, researchers should investigate perceptions regarding fertility, barriers, and challenges to changing nutrition-related behaviors, and preferences for nutritional guidance to support fertility treatments in this population.

Abstract
Diet has a key role in the reproductive axis both in males and females. This review aims to analyze the impacts of different dietary patterns on fertility. It appears that the Mediterranean diet has a predominantly protective role against infertility, while the Western diet seems to be a risk factor for infertility. Moreover, we focus attention also on dietary patterns in different countries of the World (Middle Eastern diet, Asian diet). In particular, when analyzing single nutrients, a diet rich in saturated fatty acids, cholesterol, animal proteins, and carbohydrates with high glycemic index is highly associated with male and female infertility. Finally, we evaluate the effects of vegetarian, vegan, and ketogenic diets on fertility, which seem to be still unclear. We believe that comprehension of the molecular mechanisms involved in infertility will lead to more effective and targeted treatments for infertile couples.

Abstract
The effect of 10% dietary flaxseed fed for 3 and 6 weeks on serum hormone levels of fattening gilts, the fatty acid (FA) follicular fluid (FF) composition of small and large antral follicles, and the steroidogenesis and IGF-I secretion by isolated small antral follicles and their response to regulatory hormones (LH, FSH, IGF-I) was studied using immunoassay and gas chromatography analyses. Both supplemental periods increased levels of P4 and IGF-I in blood serum. A shorter period inhibited steroidogenesis (P4, T, E2) and IGF-I secretion by small antral follicles, which was associated with decreased levels of monounsaturated FAs (MUFA) and preferred n-6 polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) metabolism. A longer period stimulated hormone secretion at elevated levels of saturated FAs (SFA) at the expense of MUFAs and PUFAs preferring the n-3 PUFA metabolism. Out of ovarian regulators, only LH and IGF-I were able to alter the secretion of steroids and IGF-I by small follicles of fattening pigs fed a basal diet. The effect of flaxseed on the secretion of follicular hormones after both supplemental periods was altered by all regulatory hormones in a dose-dependent manner. The level of SFAs and PUFAs in FF of large follicles increased with the length of flaxseed feeding, suggesting the suppression of ovulation.

Abstract
Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), particularly docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA), play crucial roles in the reproductive health of vertebrates, including humans. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism related to this phenomenon remains largely unknown. In this study, we employed two zebrafish genetic models, i.e., elovl2 -/- mutant as an endogenous DHA-deficient model and fat1 (omega-3 desaturase encoding gene) transgenic zebrafish as an endogenous DHA-rich model, to investigate the effects of DHA on oocyte maturation and quality. Results show that the elovl2 -/- mutants had much lower fecundity and poorer oocyte quality than the wild-type controls, while the fat1 zebrafish had higher fecundity and better oocyte quality than wild-type controls. DHA deficiency in elovl2 -/- embryos led to defects in egg activation, poor microtubule stability, and reduced pregnenolone levels. Further study revealed that DHA promoted pregnenolone synthesis by enhancing transcription of cyp11a1, which encodes the cholesterol side-chain cleavage enzyme, thereby stabilizing microtubule assembly during oogenesis. In turn, the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis was enhanced by DHA. In conclusion, using two unique genetic models, our findings demonstrate that endogenously synthesized DHA promotes oocyte maturation and quality by promoting pregnenolone production via transcriptional regulation of cyp11a1.

Abstract
The aim of this systematic review was to examine if chronic or acute stress, measured by questionnaires or physiological biomarkers, has a separate impact on each different stage in the IVF process. A systematic search of peer-reviewed literature was performed in three databases with keywords. Preselection included 46 articles, and in all, 36 articles were included. Most studies concluded that stress has a negative effect on IVF treatment. The egg retrieval time point was most affected by chronic and acute stress. Through this research, there may be an association between chronic stress and the fertilization stage. Only chronic stress impacted the embryo transfer stage and further evidence suggested that stress decreased during this stage. The pregnancy rate stage was weakly associated with stress. Follicular cortisol was found to affect three stages. Chronic and acute stress significantly and negatively affected the egg retrieval time point. Chronic stress was associated with a lesser extent with the fertilization point, and no significant relationship between acute stress and the embryo transfer and pregnancy rate stages were found. Follicular cortisol was found to affect the process. This review contributes to the research of the relationship between stress and IVF success.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Micronutrient supplementation during pregnancy is a controversial issue. For some micronutrients, for example folic acid or iodine, the evidence regarding supplementation is clear, whereas for others, such as zinc or vitamin E, it is not. Studies show that a large number of pregnant women have deficient levels of folic acid and iodine. However, especially with folic acid, starting supplementation during the preconception period is crucial. It is, therefore, important that gynaecologists explain this to their pregnant or preconceptional patients. Our goal was to find out how gynaecologists make their recommendations on this topic, how they assess the compliance of their patients and which micronutrients they consider to be important before/during pregnancy and during breastfeeding. METHOD AND RESULTS: We sent about 12,000 questionnaires to all registered resident gynaecologists in Germany, with a response rate of 12.2%. Regarding which micronutrients gynaecologists consider to be particularly important during pregnancy, there was a broad agreement for both folic acid and iodine (> 88% answered yes). According to the questionnaire, doctors rate other micronutrients, such as vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids, as less essential. The controversial evidence level for many micronutrients certainly plays a role here. Overall, the intake rate, especially for preconceptional women, is classified as rather low (< 60%). The most widely valued reason is the high price of dietary supplements. It was also noticeable that doctors consider certain micronutrients to be particularly important but then do not include them in the products they recommend. CONCLUSION Overall, there seems to be uncertainty about micronutrients in pregnancy and their supplementation. The study situation is often ambiguous and there are no official guidelines, leading to ambiguous recommendations from doctors and therefore low intake rates for pregnant or preconceptional women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preconception diet is a proposed modifiable risk factor for infertility. However, there is no official guidance for women in the preconception period as to which dietary approaches may improve fertility. OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE A comprehensive synthesis of the relevant evidence is key to determine the potentially effective dietary patterns and components as well as evidence gaps, and to provide information for nutritional recommendations for couples planning a pregnancy. SEARCH METHODS In this systematic scoping review, four electronic databases (Medline and EMBASE via Ovid processing, CAB Direct, and CINAHL via EBSCO) were searched for observational studies (prospective and retrospective cohort, cross-sectional, and case-control studies) from inception to 27 September 2021. Eligible studies included women of reproductive age during the preconception period, and evaluated exposures related to preconception diet and outcomes related to fertility. Results were synthesized using a descriptive approach. OUTCOMES A total of 36 studies were eligible for inclusion (31 prospective, 3 cross-sectional, and 2 case-control studies) and were published between 2007 and 2022. Of the assessed dietary exposures, increased adherence to the Mediterranean diet displayed the strongest and most consistent association with improved clinical pregnancy rates. Reducing trans fatty acids (TFAs), saturated fatty acids, and discretionary food intake (fast food and sugar-sweetened beverages) were associated with improvements in live birth, clinical pregnancy rates, and related ART outcomes. The dietary components of seafood, dairy, and soy demonstrated inconsistent findings across the few included studies. WIDER IMPLICATIONS Due to heterogeneity and the limited available literature on most exposures, there is insufficient evidence to support any specific dietary approach for improving fertility. However, following some of the dietary approaches outlined in this review (anti-inflammatory diets, reducing TFA, and discretionary food intake) are consistent with broad healthy eating guidelines, have little to no associated risk, and offer a plausible set of possible benefits. This warrants further exploration in randomized controlled trials.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after unprotected sexual intercourse for at least 12 consecutive months. Our objective is to present an updated narrative review on the endocrine causes of infertility in women. AREAS COVERED A comprehensive review was conducted using Scielo, Scopus, and EMBASE databases, comprising 245 articles. The pathophysiology of infertility in women was described, including endocrinopathies such as hypothalamic amenorrhea, hyperprolactinemia, polycystic ovary syndrome, primary ovarian insufficiency, obesity, thyroid dysfunction, and adrenal disorders. The diagnostic approach was outlined, emphasizing the necessity of hormonal studies and ovarian response assessments. Additionally, the treatment plan was presented, commencing with non-pharmacological interventions, encompassing the adoption of a Mediterranean diet, vitamin supplementation, moderate exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight. Subsequently, pharmacological treatment was discussed, focusing on the management of associated endocrine disorders and ovulatory dysfunction. EXPERT OPINION This comprehensive review highlights the impact of endocrine disorders on fertility in women, providing diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms. Despite remaining knowledge gaps that hinder more effective treatments, ongoing research and advancements show promise for improved fertility success rates within the next five years. Enhanced comprehension of the pathophysiology behind endocrine causes and the progress in genetic research will facilitate the delivery of personalized treatments, thus enhancing fertility rates.

Abstract
This review explores the impact of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) supplementation in women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART) on reproductive outcomes. A systematic search of English peer-reviewed journals was carried out using MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library to identify articles published from January 1978 to 2021. The primary outcomes assessed included pregnancy and live birth rates. Secondary outcome measures included: (i) implantation rate; (ii) fertilisation rate; (iii) number of oocytes retrieved; (iv) number of metaphase II (MII) oocytes; (v) blastocyst conversion; and (vi) embryo quality. A total of 4 randomised control trials (RCTs) met the inclusion criteria. There is a lack of high-quality research to support widespread dietary supplementation with PUFAs in women undergoing ART. Prior to its clinical recommendation, there is a need for well-designed RCTs to facilitate an in-depth understanding of PUFA supplementation in women undergoing ART.

Abstract
n-3 PUFAs are classic antioxidant that can be used to treat follicular dysplasia and hyperinsulinemia caused by excessive oxidative stress in PCOS women. To investigate the effect of n-3 PUFA supplementation on the oocyte quality of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) mice during in vitro maturation, a PCOS mouse model was established by dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). The GV oocytes of the control and PCOS groups were collected and cultured in vitro with or without n-3 PUFAs. After 14 h, the oocytes were collected. Our data demonstrated that the oocyte maturation rate of PCOS mice significantly increased after the addition of 50 µM n-3 PUFAs. The results of immunofluorescence showed that the abnormal rates of spindles and chromosomes in the PCOS + n-3 PUFA group were lower than those in the PCOS group. The mRNA expression of an antioxidant-related gene (Sirt1) and DNA damage repair genes (Brca1/Msh2) was found to be significantly rescued after n-3 treatment. Additionally, the results of living cell staining showed that the addition of n-3 PUFAs could reduce the levels of reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial superoxide in PCOS oocytes. In conclusion, the addition of 50 µM n-3 PUFAs during the in vitro maturation of PCOS mouse oocytes can improve the maturation rate by reducing the level of oxidative stress and the rate of spindle/chromosome abnormalities, providing valuable support during the IVM process.

Abstract
The investigation of modifiable factors that may exert influences on female reproductive health and in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes is increasing. Growing attention is being paid to nutrition. The aim of the present review is to recapitulate the current understanding on the effects of nutrition on female fertility and IVF outcomes. In particular, the three main classes of macromolecules have been analysed i.e. carbohydrates, proteins and fatty acids. An increasing number of studies have focused on the potential benefit of whole grain, vegetables and omega-3 polynsatured fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs) on reproductive outcomes. Controversial results exist regarding the consumption of omega-6 (ω-6) PUFAs and dairy. Overall, nutrition appears to represent a modifiable factor that may play a significant role in the context of female reproduction and IVF outcomes, but the limited number of studies and the discrepancies between the available data call for further research in the area.

BACKGROUND Fatty acids (FA) likely affect human fertility at multiple levels, as deviations from physiological FA profiles are obesogenic, and FA can modify DNA methylation (DNAm). Yet, the interplay of follicular fluid (FF) and serum FA with BMI and percentage body fat (PBF) in human fertility is not completely understood. Also, associations of DNAm with fertility are largely unexplored. METHODS Reproductive parameters ranging from retrieved oocyte number to infant birth weight, were recorded in Mexican women undergoing in vitro fertilization (n = 88). Multiple regression analysis sought BMI-adjusted and age-adjusted associations. Receiver operating characteristic analysis tested for discrimination between outcomes. RESULTS Associations of FF and serum FA were markedly distinct. While various FF FA (C16:1, C18:0, C20:2, C20:3, arachidonic acid) were significantly and inversely associated only with retrieved oocyte number, selected serum FA were associated with a broad range of pre-fertilization and post-fertilization parameters. Associations of BMI and FF FA were complex, as arachidonic acid was inversely associated with both BMI and retrieved oocyte number, while oleic acid (OA) was directly associated with BMI and PBF. Ultrasound-assessed clinical pregnancy outcome (CP) was directly associated with serum OA but inversely with its trans isomer elaidic acid (EA) and with BMI. Compounded BMI, serum EA and OA discriminated CP well (AUC = 0.74). Whole blood DNA methylation was significantly associated with and a moderate predictor (AUC = 0.66) of percent fertilized oocytes. CONCLUSIONS Overall FF FA pool composition rather than FA identity may impact oocyte production and cellular memory of FF FA is lost as the oocyte exits the follicular environment. The contrasting associations of BMI, FF OA and arachidonic acid suggest that the control of oocyte homeostasis by FF FA is uncoupled from BMI. Further studies are warranted to assess the potential of compounding BMI with serum EA and OA to predict CP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Long-term dietary fat intake is thought to affect metabolism and pregnancy of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients, and the type of fatty acids one consumes plays an important role. Previous studies mostly used questionnaires to analyze the type and proportion of fatty acids. METHODS This prospective study included 91 PCOS patients. Serum fatty acids were measured by the gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry method before ovulation induction. We compared the fatty acids between the pregnancy group and the nonpregnancy group and explored the influence of the fatty acids on live births and pregnancy loss. RESULTS Nervonic acid was lower in the pregnancy group than in the nonpregnancy group (0.25% vs. 0.30%, p = .017). The following trans-fatty acids were significantly lower in the pregnancy group than in the nonpregnancy group: trans-10-heptadecenoic acid, trans-vaccenic acid, trans-11-eicosenoic acid, and brassidic acid. The level of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the live birth group was significantly higher than the pregnancy loss group (16.95% vs. 15.10%, p = .039). Among individual PUFAs, the levels of linoleic acid (p = .043), docosapentaenoic acid (p = .024), alpha-linolenic acid (p = .042), and eicosapentaenoic acid (p = .035) were higher in the live birth group than in the pregnancy loss group. After adjusting for infertility duration, age, and body mass index, our findings suggested an inverse association between pregnancy and nervonic acid, trans-10-heptadecenoic acid, trans-vaccenic acid, trans-11-eicosenoic acid, and brassidic acid and pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that polyunsaturated fatty acids are associated with live birth in PCOS patients. Serum trans-fatty acids and nervonic acid might be risk factors for nonpregnancy. The mechanism of the influence of different fatty acids on pregnancy and live birth merits further exploration.

Abstract
The influence of B vitamins on human fertility and infertility treatments remains elusive. Therefore, this study investigated the association of most B vitamins with IVF-ET outcomes. A total of 216 subjects aged <35 year in their first oocyte retrieval cycle were recruited. Blood samples from the participants were collected before the oocyte pick-up procedure, and serum levels of riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6 (including PA and PLP), folate, and methylmalonic acid (MMA) were detected using high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Endpoints were classified into three groups according to tertiles (lower, middle, and upper) of each vitamin index, and the association of the serum vitamin status with intermediate and clinical outcomes was analyzed using a generalized estimating equation model. Higher riboflavin levels were associated with elevated probabilities of high-quality embryos, as well as clinical pregnancy after embryo transfer. A greater likelihood of transferable embryos was found in the middle tertile of serum folate. Similarly, a negative correlation of serum MMA, a marker of vitamin B12 deficiency, with high-quality embryos was identified. No significance was observed for other vitamins in terms of all endpoints. Therefore, sufficient levels of pre-conception riboflavin, folate, and vitamin B12 are recommended for successful infertility treatment and pregnancy planning; further evidence is needed to confirm our conclusion.

Abstract
Background Infertility is a nationwide public health priority in the U.S. However, few studies have investigated the effects of dietary intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on female infertility. This study explored the association between PUFA intake and risk of infertility. Methods A total of 1,785 women aged 20-44 years from three National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey cycles (2013-2018) were included in this cross-sectional study. The intake of PUFAs was obtained from a 24-h dietary interview on two separate days with a 3-10-day interval, and nutrient residue models were used. Fertility status was assessed by positive response to two relative questions via a questionnaire. Logistic regression models were used and some covariates were adjusted. Results Among all the participants, 340 (19.05%) women suffered from infertility. The intake of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (OR = 0.998, 95% CI 0.998, 0.009) was slightly related to the risk of infertility. In contrast, women with higher α-linolenic acid (ALA) (OR = 1.416, 95% CI 1.138, 1.763) and linoleic acid (LA) intake (OR = 1.020, 95% CI 1.002, 1.038) presented with a relatively higher risk of primary infertility. Furthermore, in 20-34-year-old women, higher omega-6/omega-3 was significant associated with the risk of infertility (OR = 1.002, 95%CI 1.000, 1.005). Conclusions Our results suggest that PUFA intake is only slightly associated with infertility. The higher the DHA intake, the lower the risk of infertility regardless of age. In women with primary infertility, ALA and LA has negative effect.

Abstract
Female infertility is a major public health concern and a global challenge. It is a disorder of the reproductive system, defined as the inability to achieve a clinical pregnancy. Nutrition and other environmental factors are found to impact reproductive health in women as well as the outcome of assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Dietary factors, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), fiber as well as the intake of Mediterranean diet appear to exert beneficial effects on female reproductive outcomes. The exact mechanisms associating diet to female fertility are yet to be identified, although genomic, epigenomic, and microbial pathways may be implicated. This review aims to summarize the current knowledge on the impact of dietary components on female reproduction and ART outcomes, and to discuss the relevant interplay of diet with genome, epigenome and microbial composition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity has now been recognized as a high-risk factor for reproductive health. Although remarkable advancements have been made in ART, a considerable number of infertile obese women still suffer from serial implantation failure, despite the high quality of embryos transferred. Although obesity has long been known to exert various deleterious effects on female fertility, the underlying mechanisms, especially the roles of lipid metabolism in endometrial receptivity, remain largely elusive. OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE This review summarizes current evidence on the impacts of several major lipids and lipid-derived mediators on the embryonic implantation process. Emerging methods for evaluating endometrial receptivity, for example transcriptomic and lipidomic analysis, are also discussed. SEARCH METHODS The PubMed and Embase databases were searched using the following keywords: (lipid or fatty acid or prostaglandin or phospholipid or sphingolipid or endocannabinoid or lysophosphatidic acid or cholesterol or progesterone or estrogen or transcriptomic or lipidomic or obesity or dyslipidemia or polycystic ovary syndrome) AND (endometrial receptivity or uterine receptivity or embryo implantation or assisted reproductive technology or in vitro fertilization or embryo transfer). A comprehensive literature search was performed on the roles of lipid-related metabolic pathways in embryo implantation published between January 1970 and March 2022. Only studies with original data and reviews published in English were included in this review. Additional information was obtained from references cited in the articles resulting from the literature search. OUTCOMES Recent studies have shown that a fatty acids-related pro-inflammatory response in the embryo-endometrium boundary facilitates pregnancy via mediation of prostaglandin signaling. Phospholipid-derived mediators, for example endocannabinoids, lysophosphatidic acid and sphingosine-1-phosphate, are associated with endometrial receptivity, embryo spacing and decidualization based on evidence from both animal and human studies. Progesterone and estrogen are two cholesterol-derived steroid hormones that synergistically mediate the structural and functional alterations in the uterus ready for blastocyst implantation. Variations in serum cholesterol profiles throughout the menstrual cycle imply a demand for steroidogenesis at the time of window of implantation (WOI). Since 2002, endometrial transcriptomic analysis has been serving as a diagnostic tool for WOI dating. Numerous genes that govern lipid homeostasis have been identified and, based on specific alterations of lipidomic signatures differentially expressed in WOI, lipidomic analysis of endometrial fluid provides a possibility for non-invasive diagnosis of lipids alterations during the WOI. WIDER IMPLICATIONS Given that lipid metabolic dysregulation potentially plays a role in infertility, a better understanding of lipid metabolism could have significant clinical implications for the diagnosis and treatment of female reproductive disorders.

Abstract
STUDY QUESTION Is self-reported use of omega-3 fatty acid supplements associated with fecundability, the probability of natural conception, in a given menstrual cycle? SUMMARY ANSWER Prospectively recorded omega-3 supplement use was associated with an increased probability of conceiving. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY In infertile women, omega-3 fatty acid intake has been associated with increased probability of pregnancy following IVF. In natural fertility, studies are conflicting, and no study of natural fertility has evaluated omega-3 fatty acid supplementation and fecundity. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION Secondary data analysis of 900 women contributing 2510 cycles in Time to Conceive (TTC), a prospective, time to pregnancy cohort study from 2008 to December 2015. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS Women aged 30-44 years, trying to conceive <3 months, without history of infertility were followed using standardized pregnancy testing. While attempting to conceive, women daily recorded menstrual cycle events and supplement and medication intake using the Cerner Multum Drug Database. Supplements and vitamins containing omega-3 were identified. Omega-3 use, defined as use in at least 20% of days in a given menstrual cycle, in each pregnancy attempt cycle was determined. A discrete-time Cox proportional hazards model was used to calculate the fecundability ratio. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE Women taking omega-3 supplementation were more likely to be younger, thinner, nulligravid, white and to take vitamin D, prenatal and multivitamins compared to women not taking omega-3s. After adjusting for age, obesity, race, previous pregnancy, vitamin D and prenatal and multivitamin use, women taking omega-3 supplements had 1.51 (95% CI 1.12, 2.04) times the probability of conceiving compared to women not taking omega-3s. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION Our study was not a randomized controlled trial. The women who used omega-3 supplements may represent a more health-conscious population. We sought to address this by adjusting for multiple factors in our model. Additionally, the omega-3 fatty acid supplements that TTC participants used included multiple types and brands with varying dosages of omega-3 fatty acids. Women reported the type of supplement they were taking but not the concentration of omega-3s in that supplement. It is therefore not possible to compare dosing or a dose-response relationship in our study. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS Omega-3 supplementation may present a feasible and inexpensive modifiable factor to improve fertility. Randomized controlled trials are needed to further investigate the benefits of omega-3 supplementation for women trying to conceive naturally. Abstract
PURPOSE The requirement of zinc for the development and maturation of germ lines and reproductive systems is deeply conserved across evolution. The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans offers a tractable platform to study the complex system of distributing zinc to the germ line. We investigated several zinc importers to investigate how zinc transporters play a role in the reproductive system in nematodes, as well as establish a platform to study zinc transporter biology in germline and reproductive development. METHODS Previous high throughput transcriptional datasets as well as phylogenetic analysis identified several putative zinc transporters that have a function in reproduction in worms. Phenotypic analysis of CRISPR-generated knockouts and tags included characterization of offspring output, gonad development, and protein localization. Light and immunofluorescence microscopy allowed for visualization of physiological and molecular effects of zinc transporter mutations. RESULTS Disruption of two zinc transporters, ZIPT-2.4 and ZIPT-15, was shown to lead to defects in reproductive output. A mutation in zipt-2.4 has subtle effects on reproduction, while a mutation in zipt-15 has a clear impact on gonad and germline development that translates into a more pronounced defect in fecundity. Both transporters have germline expression, as well as additional expression in other cell types. CONCLUSIONS Two ZIP-family zinc transporter orthologs of human ZIP6/10 and ZIP1/2/3 proteins are important for full reproductive fecundity and participate in development of the gonad. Notably, these zinc transporters are present in gut and reproductive tissues in addition to the germ line, consistent with a complex zinc trafficking network important for reproductive success.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and their food sources have garnered interest as a potential nutrient with wide-range health benefits, including fertility. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the association of women's and men's intake of omega-3 fatty acids and omega-3 rich-foods with semen quality and outcomes of infertility treatment with assisted reproductive technologies. STUDY DESIGN Couples presenting to the Massachusetts General Hospital were invited to enroll in a prospective cohort study (2007-2020). Male and female diets were assessed using a validated 131-item food frequency questionnaire. The primary outcomes were implantation, clinical pregnancy, and live birth probabilities. The secondary outcomes included total and clinical pregnancy loss and conventional semen parameters, for males only. We estimated the relationship between intakes of omega-3 fatty acids, nuts, and fish and the probability (95% confidence interval) of study outcomes using generalized linear mixed models to account for repeated treatment cycles per participant while simultaneously adjusting for age, body mass index, smoking status, education, dietary patterns, total energy intake, and male partner diet. RESULTS A total of 229 couples and 410 assisted reproductive technology cycles were analyzed for primary and secondary outcomes. Of note, 343 men contributing 896 semen samples were included in analyses for semen quality measures. Women's docosahexaenoic acid + eicosapentaenoic acid intake was positively associated with live birth. The multivariable-adjusted probabilities of live birth for women in the bottom and top quartiles of eicosapentaenoic acid + docosahexaenoic acid intake were 0.36 (95% confidence interval, 0.26-0.48) and 0.54 (95% confidence interval, 0.42-0.66) (P trend=.02). Eicosapentaenoic acid + docosahexaenoic acid intake was inversely related to the risk of pregnancy loss, which was 0.53 among women in the lowest quartile of eicosapentaenoic acid + docosahexaenoic acid intake and 0.05 among women in the highest quartile (P trend=.01). Men's intake of total omega-3 fatty acids was positively related to sperm count, concentration, and motility, but unrelated to any assisted reproductive technology outcomes. Similar associations were observed when evaluating the intake of primary food sources of these fatty acids. CONCLUSION Women's consumption of omega-3 fatty acids and omega-3-rich foods may improve the probability of conception by decreasing the risk of pregnancy loss. In addition, men's intake of omega-3 fatty acids may influence semen quality.

Abstract
The nutritional status of reproductive-aged couples can have a significant impact on fertility status, but the effect of dietary patterns on pregnancy outcomes in people using assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) is currently unknown. This review aimed to synthesize the published research investigating the relation between preconception dietary patterns and clinical pregnancy or live birth in men and women of reproductive age undergoing ART. Six electronic databases were systematically searched for original research published between January 1978 and June 2021. Original research reporting on the effect of predefined dietary patterns on either clinical pregnancy and/or live birth rates following in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in men and women aged 18-49 y was eligible for inclusion. Studies were assessed for risk of bias according to the Cochrane guidelines. Included studies underwent qualitative and quantitative synthesis using random-effects model meta-analyses. Thirteen studies (12 cohort studies, 1 randomized controlled trial) reporting on 3638 participants (93% female) were included in the review. All studies had a moderate-high risk of bias. In individual studies, maternal adherence to 4 dietary patterns [Mediterranean diet (RR: 1.22; 95% CI: 1.05, 1.43), novel profertility diet (OR: 1.43; 95% CI: 1.19, 1.72), Iranian traditional medicine diet (OR: 3.9; 95% CI: 1.2, 12.8), Dutch national dietary recommendations diet (OR: 1.65; 95% CI: 1.08, 2.52)] was associated with increased likelihood of achieving a clinical pregnancy, while 2 dietary patterns [novel profertility diet (OR: 1.53; 95% CI: 1.26, 1.85), Mediterranean diet (RR: 1.25; 95% CI: 1.07, 1.45)] were associated with increased probability of live birth. Meta-analyses showed an association between adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern and live birth across 2 studies (OR: 1.98; 95% CI: 1.17, 3.35; I2 = 29%, n = 355), but no association with clinical pregnancy. As the relation between dietary patterns and ART outcomes is currently inconsistent, higher-quality nutrition research is required to further explore this emerging field of interest (PROSPERO registration: CRD42020188194).

Abstract
Gynecological neoplasms pose a serious threat to women's health. It is estimated that in 2020, there were nearly 1.3 million new cases worldwide, from which almost 50% ended in death. The most commonly diagnosed are cervical and endometrial cancers; when it comes to infertility, it affects ~48.5 million couples worldwide and the number is continually rising. Ageing of the population, environmental factors such as dietary habits, environmental pollutants and increasing prevalence of risk factors may affect the reproductive potential in women. Therefore, in order to identify potential risk factors for these issues, attention has been drawn to trace elements. Trace mineral imbalances can be caused by a variety of causes, starting with hereditary diseases, finishing with an incorrect diet or exposure to polluted air or water. In this review, we aimed to summarize the current knowledge regarding trace elements imbalances in the case of gynecologic cancers as well as female fertility and during pregnancy.

Abstract
BackgroundInfertility involves 15% of couples in Italy and approximately 10-12% worldwide.Focusing on female fertility, it can underline multiple causes, among them the diet has a great influence. Methods We investigated whether the consumption of some fatty acids affects four outcomes of the assisted reproduction techniques. From September 2014 to December 2016, women referring to our Italian fertility unit, eligible for assisted reproduction techniques, were invited to participate. Information on dietwere recorded through a validated food frequency questionnaire. Results494 women were included, of whom95% achieved good quality oocytes, 87% resulted in embryo transfer, 32.0%in clinical pregnancies, and 24.5% in pregnancy at term.The fourth quartile of saturated fatty acids consumption, compared to the first one, showed an association with clinical pregnancy (adjusted relative risk 0.67, 95% confidence interval 0.45 to 1.00, p=0.0491). Some associations emerge accounting for confounders. Age was associated with clinical pregnancy and pregnancy at term in the models considering all fatty intakes and food groups variables but was not associated with oocytes quality and embryo transfer. Physical activity was associated with clinical pregnancy. ConclusionsThere is biologic plausibility of the effect of omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids on oocyte development via eicosanoids synthesis, even if our results showed limited associations.Future research is aimed to measure serum levels of fatty acids and investigate the assisted reproduction techniques' outcomes. Abstract
Background: Previous studies suggest that maternal diets enriched in unsaturated fatty acids may have a positive effect on pregnancy success. The aim of the present study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate whether increased dietary intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) or monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) during the periconception period has beneficial effects on the achievement of pregnancy in women. Methods: The electronic databases PubMed, Medline and Cochrane Central Register, as well as references in related review articles, were searched to find studies assessing the effects of unsaturated fatty acid dietary intake during the periconception period on the achievement of pregnancy in women. Pregnancy was confirmed by high levels of hCG (biochemical means) and ultrasound confirmation of a gestational sac and heartbeat (clinical means). Results: For the meta-analysis evaluating the effects of periconceptional diets enriched in PUFAs on pregnancy, four articles, providing data on 2,121 patients, were included. Results showed that periconceptional intake of PUFAs has no significant effects on achieving pregnancy compared to controls, according to both the fixed effects and random effects models (RR = 0.99, 95% CI 0.98–1.00). Further secondary analysis considering ω-6 and ω-3 PUFAs separately showed no significant effects on achieving pregnancy compared to controls. On the other hand, for the meta-analysis evaluating the effects of periconceptional diets enriched in MUFAs on achieving pregnancy, five articles, providing data on 2,473 patients, were included. Results showed that periconceptional dietary intake of MUFAs has significant effects on achieving pregnancy compared to controls according to the fixed effects model (RR = 1.03, 95% CI 1.01–1.06, p < 0.02) but not to the random effects model, due to heterogeneity. A secondary meta-analysis excluding one study which led to heterogeneity showed significant effects of MUFAs on achieving pregnancy compared to controls, according to both the fixed effects and random effects models (RR = 1.03, 95% CI 1.01–1.05, p < 0.02). Conclusion: The meta-analysis of published clinical studies suggests that diets enriched in MUFAs, although not those enriched in PUFAs, may have a positive effect on pregnancy success as determined by HCG and ultrasonography. Abstract
Infertility is an increasing problem that affects couples attempting pregnancy. A growing body of evidence points to a link between diet and female fertility. In fact, data show that a diet high in trans fats, refined carbohydrates, and added sugars can negatively affect fertility. Conversely, a diet based on the Mediterranean dietary patterns, i.e., rich in dietary fiber, omega-3 (ɷ-3) fatty acids, plant-based protein, and vitamins and minerals, has a positive impact on female fertility. An unhealthy diet can disrupt microbiota composition, and it is worth investigating whether the composition of the gut microbiota correlates with the frequency of infertility. There is a lack of evidence to exclude gluten from the diet of every woman trying to become pregnant in the absence of celiac disease. Furthermore, there are no data concerning adverse effects of alcohol on female fertility, and caffeine consumption in the recommended amounts also does not seem to affect fertility. On the other hand, phytoestrogens presumably have a positive influence on female fertility. Nevertheless, there are many unanswered questions with regard to supplementation in order to enhance fertility. It has been established that women of childbearing age should supplement folic acid. Moreover, most people experience vitamin D and iodine deficiency; thus, it is vital to control their blood concentrations and consider supplementation if necessary. Therefore, since diet and lifestyle seem to be significant factors influencing fertility, it is valid to expand knowledge in this area.

Abstract
PURPOSE The present study investigated the effects of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on the growth of bovine oocytes. METHODS Oocytes and granulosa cell complexes (OGCs) were collected from early antral follicles (0.4-0.7 mm) on the surface of ovaries harvested from a slaughterhouse. The OGCs were cultured with 0, 1, and 10 μmol/L docosahexanoic acid (DHA) for 16 days. RESULTS Antrum formation of the OGCs and the number of granulosa cells (GCs) surrounding the oocytes were comparable among groups, whereas supplementation of 0.1 μmol/L of DHA significantly improved oocyte growth. Oocytes grown with DHA had a higher fertilization rate, acetylation levels of H4K12, and ATP contents, as well as a lower lipid content compared with those grown without DHA. In addition, GCs surrounding OGCs grown with DHA had low lipid content compared with vehicle counterparts. Furthermore, when GCs were cultured in vitro, DHA increased ATP production, mitochondrial membrane potential, and reduced lipid content and levels of reactive oxygen species. RNA-seq of GCs revealed that DHA increased CPT1A expression levels and affect genes associated with focal adhesion, oxidative phosphorylation, and PI3K-AKT etc. CONCLUSION The results suggest that DHA supplementation affects granulosa cell characteristics and supports oocyte growth in vitro.

METHODS A total of 114 smokers admitted to the smoking cessation clinic of our hospital were enrolled and randomly divided into the control group (n=61) and the study group (n=53). The control group was given health education intervention, and the study group was given art therapy intervention. The blood lipid level, symptom checklist score, lung function, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and serum total cholesterol (TC) levels of different length of smoking were compared between the two groups. RESULTS The levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), TC, triglycerides (TG), HDL-C were significantly reduced in both groups, but compared with the control group, the LDL-C, TC, TG, and HDL-C levels of the study group were decreased more significantly, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The symptom checklist scores were significantly reduced in both groups, but compared with the control group, the study group decreased more significantly, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). There were significant differences in HDL-C levels among young smokers who had different length of smoking (P<0.05), and with the continuous increase in smoking years, HDL-C levels were significantly reduced. After intervention, lung function was significantly improved, and the levels of vital capacity (VC%) and forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1%) were significantly increased (P<0.05). After intervention, the smoking reduction rate and the success rate of time-point smoking cessation were significantly reduced (P<0.05). CONCLUSION Art therapy intervention had an ideal effect on young smokers, which could improve blood lipid levels and lung function, reduce the rate of reoccurring smoking, and significantly increase patients' symptom checklist score.

Abstract
Maternal diabetes increases the risk of embryo resorptions and impairs embryo development. Decidualization is crucial for embryo development and regulated by mTOR signaling. However, little is known about how maternal diabetes affects the decidua at early postimplantation stages and whether dietary treatments enriched in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can prevent decidual alterations. Here, we determined resorption rates, decidual mTOR pathways and markers of decidual function and remodeling in diabetic rats fed or not with diets enriched in PUFAs exclusively during the early postimplantation period. Pregestational streptozotocin-induced diabetic Albino Wistar rats and controls were fed or not with diets enriched in 6% sunflower oil or 6% chia oil (enriched in n-6 or n-3 PUFAs, respectively) on days 7, 8 and 9 of pregnancy and evaluated on day 9 of pregnancy. Maternal diabetes induced an 11-fold increase in embryo resorptions, which was prevented by both PUFAs-enriched diets despite no changes in maternal glycemia. The activity of mTOR pathway was decreased in the decidua from diabetic rats, an alteration prevented by the PUFAs-enriched diets. PUFAs-enriched diets prevented increased expression of Foxo1 (a negative regulator of mTOR) and reduced expression of miR-21 (a negative regulator of Foxo1). These diets also prevented reduced markers of decidual function (leukemia inhibitory factor and IGFBP1 expression and MMPs activity) in diabetic rat decidua. We identified the early post implantation as a crucial stage for pregnancy success, in which dietary PUFAs can protect diabetic pregnancies from embryo resorptions, decidual mTOR signaling impairments, and altered markers of decidual function and remodeling.

Abstract
Humans’ health is the result of a complex and balanced interplay between genetic factors, environmental stimuli, lifestyle habits, and the microbiota composition. The knowledge about their single contributions, as well as the complex network linking each to the others, is pivotal to understand the mechanisms underlying the onset of many diseases and can provide key information for their prevention, diagnosis and therapy. This applies also to reproduction. Reproduction, involving almost 10% of our genetic code, is one of the most critical human’s functions and is a key element to assess the well-being of a population. The last decades revealed a progressive decline of reproductive outcomes worldwide. As a consequence, there is a growing interest in unveiling the role of the different factors involved in human reproduction and great efforts have been carried out to improve its outcomes. As for many other diseases, it is now clear that the interplay between the underlying genetics, our commensal microbiome, the lifestyle habits and the environment we live in can either exacerbate the outcome or mitigate the adverse effects. Here, we aim to analyze how each of these factors contribute to reproduction highlighting their individual contribution and providing supporting evidence of how to modify their impact and overall contribution to a healthy reproductive status.

Abstract
Threatened miscarriage is one of the most common complications causing pregnancy loss, and it affects approximately 20% of confirmed pregnancies. More and more women are seeking treatment with complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for this common complication, and it has been reported that women have had successful pregnancies after threatened miscarriage when being treated with CAM, which mainly includes Chinese herbal medicines, acupuncture, and nutritional supplements as well as psychological interventions and other approaches. However, many experts are concerned about the safety and adverse events of certain CAM approaches in women with threatened miscarriage. Therefore, this review focuses on the status of CAM for threatened miscarriage and presents the potential therapeutic efficacy and safety of CAM based on some clinical and experimental studies. We thus hope to provide some instructive suggestions for the application of CAM for treating threatened miscarriage in the future.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most frequent endocrinopathies, affecting 5-10% of women of reproductive age, and is characterized by the presence of ovarian cysts, oligo, or anovulation, and clinical or biochemical hyperandrogenism. Metabolic abnormalities such as hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, cardiovascular complications, dyslipidemia, and obesity are frequently present in PCOS women. Several key pathogenic pathways overlap between these metabolic abnormalities, notably chronic inflammation. The observation that this mechanism was shared led to the hypothesis that a chronic inflammatory state could contribute to the pathogenesis of PCOS. Moreover, while physiological inflammation is an essential feature of reproductive events such as ovulation, menstruation, implantation, and labor at term, the establishment of chronic inflammation may be a pivotal feature of the observed reproductive dysfunctions in PCOS women. Taken together, the present work aims to review the available evidence about inflammatory mediators and related mechanisms in women with PCOS, with an emphasis on reproductive function.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence on the effect of nutrition on reproduction is emerging from both animal and human studies. A healthy dietary pattern and nutrient supplementation, especially during the peri-conceptional period, might be helpful to achieve a live birth, although the mechanisms implicated are not fully understood. The endocrine system and the ooplasmic organelles apparatus, in particular the mitochondria, are clearly key elements during oogenesis and subsequent embryo development, and their proper functioning is associated with nutrition, even beyond maternal aging. Several studies in animal models have reported various adverse effects on mitochondria caused by unbalanced dietary intakes such as high fat diet, high fat high sugar diet, and low protein diet. The alterations produced might include mitochondrial intracellular distribution, content, structure, biogenesis, and functioning. This review summarizes the key role of mitochondria in female reproduction and the effects of different dietary macronutrient compositions on oocyte mitochondrial activity with their possible short-, medium-, and long-term effects.

Abstract
The fatty acid composition of human follicular fluid is important for oocyte development and for pregnancy following in vitro fertilization (IVF). This study investigated whether a dietary intervention that included an increase in marine omega-3 fatty acids, olive oil and vitamin D alters the fatty acid composition of human follicular fluid. The association of lifestyle factors with follicular fluid fatty acid composition was also investigated. Fifty-five couples awaiting IVF were randomized to receive the 6-week treatment intervention of olive oil for cooking, an olive oil-based spread, and a daily supplement drink enriched with vitamin D and the marine omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 56 couples were randomized to receive placebo equivalents. Dietary questionnaires were completed, and samples of blood were taken before and after the intervention. Follicular fluid was collected at oocyte retrieval and the fatty acid profile assessed using gas chromatography. In the control group, individual fatty acids in red blood cells and follicular fluid were significantly correlated. Furthermore, a healthier diet was associated with a lower percentage of follicular fluid arachidonic acid. The follicular fluid of women in the treatment group contained significantly higher amounts of EPA and DHA compared to the control group, while the omega-6 fatty acids linoleic, γ-linolenic, dihomo-γ-linolenic, and arachidonic were lower. This is the first report of a dietary intervention altering the fatty acid composition of follicular fluid in humans. Further research is required to determine whether this intervention improves oocyte quality.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effects of algae (rich in omega-3 fatty acids), sunflower oil (rich in omega-6 fatty acids) and soybean oil (rich in omega-6 fatty acids) on the entire folliculogenesis in juvenile and sexually mature rabbits. After weaning, rabbits were randomly divided into four experimental groups of 14 animals each. Control animals received non-supplemented pellets, while in the other groups, the pellets contained 1% marine algae, 3% sunflower oil or 3% soybean oil. Animals from each group were slaughtered at 12 weeks of age (n = 7 per group) or at 18 weeks of age (n = 7 per group). The ovaries were harvested and fixed for hematoxylin-eosin staining, immunohistochemical localization of PCNA and TUNEL assay. Algae-enriched diet markedly decreased the number of primordial and primary follicles, while addition of sunflower oil reduced the number of primary follicles in 12-week-old rabbits. The number of antral follicles was higher following algae supplementation, but lower after addition of soybean oil in that age group. Proliferating index was decreased following supplementation with algae and soybean oil in juvenile rabbits, whereas it was increased after addition of algae and decreased following vegetable oils in mature ones. Dietary PUFAs did not impact apoptosis in the rabbit ovary of both age groups. The obtained results suggest that PUFA-enriched diet regulate either early folliculogenesis or antral follicle development in rabbits that might influence reproductive performance as a consequence. It appears that observed effects are attributed to sexual maturity.

Abstract
Background: Seafood is an important source of omega-3 fatty acids, which have been associated with improved oocyte quality and embryo morphology in some studies. However, seafood is also a source of persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals, which may adversely affect fecundity. Previous studies of seafood intake and fecundity have generated inconsistent results. Methods: In two prospective cohort studies of 7836 female pregnancy planners from Denmark (Snart Foraeldre, n = 2709) and North America (PRESTO, n = 5127), we evaluated the association of dietary intake of total seafood and marine-sourced long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, and docosapentaenoic acid) with fecundability. Participants completed a baseline questionnaire on sociodemographics, behavioral factors, anthropometrics, and medical history, and a food frequency questionnaire. Pregnancy status was updated bimonthly for up to 12 months or until reported conception. We estimated fecundability ratios (FRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using proportional probabilities regression models, adjusted for energy intake and other potential confounders. We restricted analyses to women with ≤6 menstrual cycles of attempt time at enrollment. Results: Intake of total seafood or marine-sourced long-chain omega-3 fatty acids was not appreciably associated with fecundability in either cohort (≥200 vs. <50 g/week total seafood: FR = 0.94, 95% CI: 0.79–1.10 in Snart Foraeldre; FR = 1.00, 95% CI: 0.90–1.13 in PRESTO; marine fatty acids: ≥90th vs. <25th percentile: FR = 1.00, 95% CI: 0.85–1.18 in Snart Foraeldre; FR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.86–1.09 in PRESTO). In PRESTO, where we collected additional data on seafood preparation, we observed an inverse association between fecundability and fried shellfish (≥10 g/week vs. none: FR = 0.77, 95% CI: 0.61–0.98), but not unfried shellfish (≥20 g/week vs. none: FR = 0.98, 95% CI: 0.89–1.07); in Snart Foraeldre, there was no association with total shellfish intake. Conclusions: We found little association between seafood intake and fecundability overall, but greater intake of fried shellfish was associated with reduced fecundability among North American participants.

Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the association between adherence to a healthy dietary pattern and outcomes of assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs). PubMed, Embase and Web of Science were searched for eligible studies through December 2019 according to the population, intervention, comparison, outcome and study design (PICOS) criteria. Eight prospective cohort studies (S) reporting pregnancy outcomes (O) of higher vs lower adherence to a healthy dietary pattern (I/C) in women undergoing ART treatment (P) were included, involving a total of 2229 women with 2067 embryo transfer cycles. The pooled odds ratio (OR) for positive pregnancy test, clinical pregnancy and ongoing pregnancy/live birth was 0.82 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.65-1.03), 0.99 (95% CI 0.68-1.44) and 1.30 (95% CI 0.81-2.09), respectively. In conclusion, greater adherence to a healthy dietary pattern rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes and fish, may not be significantly related to ART success.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recently, the relationship between nutrition and reproduction is being studied. In particular, when older women receive reproductive treatment, egg aging causes greater problems than organic factors. METHODS This study investigated the relationship between nutrition and reproduction with a focus on factors that cause aging, including oxidation, glycation, and chronic inflammation. A large volume of data concerning each nutrient's relationship with reproductive medicine was collected from a number of observational studies. MAIN FINDINGS The results showed that refined carbohydrates should be avoided and care should be taken to achieve proper intake of omega-3 fatty acids. Folic acid and vitamin D were also effective. For men, antioxidant measures are especially effective. The effects of antioxidants are related to insulin resistance, which causes chronic inflammation. CONCLUSION Recent research has shown that rather than meal content, meal intervals are more important for improving insulin resistance. Future research should examine lifestyle-related nutrition factors and their relationships to reproductive treatment.

Abstract
STUDY QUESTION Are serum omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acid concentrations associated with the probability of conceiving? SUMMARY ANSWER There is no strong association between serum concentrations of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and the probability of conceiving naturally. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid serum concentrations have been shown to play an important role in reproduction in animal models, while conflicting results have been reported in human studies of infertile women. It is unknown to what extent omega fatty acid serum concentrations impact natural fertility. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION A nested, case-control study was conducted consisting of 200 participants [fertile: conceived within 3 cycles of attempt (n = 50), subfertile: conceived within 4 and 12 cycles of attempt (n = 100) and infertile: did not conceive within 12 cycles of attempt (n = 50)] randomly selected from the Time to Conceive cohort, a prospective time-to-pregnancy study (2008 to 2015). PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS In the Time to Conceive study, women aged 30-44 years who were trying to conceive for <3 months and had no history of infertility were recruited and followed until the end of their pregnancy or ~1 year of pregnancy attempt. For this study, serum collected early in the woman's pregnancy attempt was analysed for anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid concentrations by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The primary outcome was a positive home pregnancy test. The secondary outcomes were miscarriage and serum AMH level. A discrete-time Cox proportional hazards model was used to estimate the fecundability ratio. The odds ratios for miscarriage were calculated using logistic regression. The association between serum omega fatty acid concentrations and AMH level (natural log transformed) was analysed using Pearson's Correlation. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE A total of 200 women provided 1321 cycles for analysis.Mean omega-3, omega-6 and omega-6:omega-3 ratios did not significantly differ between the fertile, subfertile and infertile groups. There were no associations (all fecundability ratios ~1.0) between pregnancy and individual omega-3 fatty acid concentrations, including alpha-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, or omega-6 fatty acids, including linoleic acid (LA), dihommo-gamma linolenic acid and arachidonic acid. There was no significant association between any individual omega fatty acid serum concentration and the age-adjusted odds of miscarriage. No association was found between any serum omega fatty acid concentration and AMH. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION This study is limited by the sample size. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid concentrations were derived from serum provided at a single timepoint in the first cycle of enrollment. Serum concentrations may therefore not be representative of all critical timepoints in the menstrual cycle or throughout their attempts to conceive. Additionally, women enrolled in this study were 30 years of age and older, and therefore the findings may not apply to younger women. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS These data would suggest that omega-3 and omega-6 serum levels are not associated with natural fertility or risk of miscarriage. However, due to the above-mentioned limitations, future investigation is still needed to determine whether omega-3 fatty acid supplementation may benefit women planning to conceive naturally. Abstract
Chronic high-fat diet (HFD) consumption causes ovarian dysfunction in rodents. Acute dietary treatment with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) increases oocyte quality and ovarian reserve at advanced reproductive age. We hypothesized that DHA supplementation after HFD exposure reverses HFD-induced ovarian defects. We conducted a dietary intervention with reversal to chow, DHA-supplemented chow, or DHA-supplemented HFD after HFD consumption. After 10 weeks, HFD-fed mice had impaired estrous cyclicity, decreased primordial follicles, and altered ovarian expression of 24 genes compared to chow controls. Diet reversal to either chow or chow + DHA restored estrous cyclicity, however only chow + DHA appeared to mitigated the impact of HFD on ovarian reserve. All dietary interventions restored HFD-dysregulated gene expression to chow levels. We found no association between follicular fluid DHA levels and ovarian reserve. In conclusion our data suggest some benefit of DHA supplementation after HFD, particularly in regards to ovarian gene expression, however complete restoration of ovarian function was not achieved.

Effect of a 6-week "Mediterranean" dietary intervention on in vitro human embryo development: the Preconception Dietary Supplements in Assisted Reproduction double-blinded randomized controlled trial. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the impact of increased dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and olive oil for 6 weeks before in vitro fertilization (IVF) or IVF-intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) on morphokinetic markers of early embryo development. DESIGN A double-blinded randomized controlled trial. SETTING Academic IVF unit. PATIENT(S) A total of 111 couples undergoing IVF or IVF-ICSI were recruited. INTERVENTIONS(S) Fifty-five couples received the 6-week study intervention of a daily supplement drink enriched with omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D plus additional olive oil and olive oil-based spread, and 56 couples received the control intervention. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) The primary end point for the study was the time taken for completion of the second cell cycle after fertilization (CC2). Secondary end points included time to complete the third and fourth cell cycles (CC3 and CC4), the synchrony of the second and third cell cycles (S2 and S3), and the day 3 and day 5 Known Implantation Data Scores (KIDScores). RESULT(S) There was no difference in CC2 between the two groups. However, CC4 was accelerated in the study group compared with the control group, and a significantly shortened S3 as well as an increase in KIDScore on day 3 were observed, indicating improved embryo quality in the study group. CONCLUSION(S) This study demonstrates that a short period of dietary supplementation alters the rate of embryo cleavage. Further research is required to investigate the mechanisms that regulate this effect, and whether the impact on embryo development translates into improved clinical outcomes. Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the effects of the nutraceuticals omega-6/3 and omega-9/6 on endometriosis-associated infertility and pain. Methods: Controlled experimental study, with each group composed of eight female rats. Fertility groups: sham-operated control (0.9% saline solution); control with endometriosis (0.9% saline); omega-6/3 (1.2 g/kg/day); omega-9/6 (1.2 g/kg/day); and meloxicam (0.8 mg/kg/day). Pain groups: sham-operated control (0.9% saline); control with endometriosis (0.9% saline); omega-6/3 (1.2 g/kg/day); omega-9/6 (1.2 g/kg/day); medroxyprogesterone acetate (5 mg/kg/every 3 days); and meloxicam (0.8 mg/kg/day). Peritoneal endometriosis was surgically induced. Pain was evaluated with the writhing test. Fertility was evaluated by counting the number of embryos in the left hemi-uterus. Results: The mean number of writhings was as follows: sham-operated, 11.1 ± 2.9; control with endometriosis, 49.3 ± 4.4; omega-6/3, 31.5 ± 2.7; omega-9/6, 34.1 ± 4.5; medroxyprogesterone acetate, 2.1 ± 0.8; meloxicam, 1 ± 0.3. There was a significant difference between both controls and all drugs used for treatment. Regarding fertility, the mean values were as follows: sham-operated, 6.8 ± 0.6; control with endometriosis, 4.2 ± 0.7; omega-6/3, 4.7 ± 1; omega-9/6, 3.8 ± 0.9; and meloxicam, 1.8 ± 0.9. Conclusions: The omega-6/3 and omega-9/6 nutraceuticals decreased pain compared to the controls. There was no improvement in fertility in any of the tested groups.

Abstract
Fecundity is the capacity to produce offspring. Identifying dietary factors that influence human fecundity is of major clinical and public health significance. This review focuses on the evidence from epidemiologic literature for the relationships between key nutritional factors and female reproductive potential. According to existing data, women trying to achieve pregnancy are encouraged to increase consumption of whole grains, omega-3 fatty acids, fish, and soy and to reduce consumption of trans fats and red meat. In addition, a daily multivitamin that contains folic acid before and during pregnancy may not only prevent birth defects, but also improve the chance of achieving and maintaining a pregnancy. In contrast, there is limited evidence supporting an association between vitamin D and human fecundity outcomes despite promising evidence from nonhuman studies. Questions for future research included the roles of other types of fat (especially omega-6 and monounsaturated fats) and protein (especially white meat and seafood) on female fertility; particular attention should also be paid to exposure to environmental contaminants in foods. Although much work remains, this review accrued best available evidence to provide practical dietary recommendations for women trying to conceive.
