An early perceptual locus of absolute pitch

Absolute pitch (AP) refers to the naming of musical tone without external reference. The influential two-component model states that AP is limited by the late-emerging pitch labeling process only and not the earlier perceptual and memory processes. Over the years, however, support for this model at the neural level has been mixed with various methodological limitations. Here, the electroencephalography responses of 27 AP possessors and 27 non-AP possessors were recorded. During both name verification and passive listening, event-related potential analyses showed a difference between AP and non-AP possessors at about 200 ms in their response toward tones compared with noise stimuli. Multivariate pattern analyses suggested that pitch naming was subserved by a series of transient processes for the first 250 ms, followed by a stage-like process for both AP and non-AP possessors with no group differences between them. These findings are inconsistent with the predictions of the two-component model, and instead suggest the existence of an early perceptual locus of AP.

Absolute pitch: neurophysiological evidence for early brain activity in prefrontal cortex

Absolute pitch (AP) is the ability to rapidly label pitch without an external reference. The speed of AP labeling may be related to faster sensory processing. We compared time needed for auditory processing in AP musicians, non-AP musicians, and nonmusicians (NM) using high-density electroencephalographic recording. Participants responded to pure tones and sung voice. Stimuli evoked a negative deflection peaking at ~100 ms (N1) post-stimulus onset, followed by a positive deflection peaking at ~200 ms (P2). N1 latency was shortest in AP, intermediate in non-AP musicians, and longest in NM. Source analyses showed decreased auditory cortex and increased frontal cortex contributions to N1 for complex tones compared with pure tones. Compared with NM, AP musicians had weaker source currents in left auditory cortex but stronger currents in left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) during N1, and stronger currents in left IFG during P2. Compared with non-AP musicians, AP musicians exhibited stronger source currents in right insula and left IFG during N1, and stronger currents in left IFG during P2. Non-AP musicians had stronger N1 currents in right auditory cortex than nonmusicians. Currents in left IFG and left auditory cortex were correlated to response times exclusively in AP. Findings suggest a left frontotemporal network supports rapid pitch labeling in AP.

Early tone categorization in absolute pitch musicians is subserved by the right-sided perisylvian brain

Absolute pitch (AP) is defined as the ability to identify and label tones without reference to keyality. In this context, the main question is whether early or late processing stages are responsible for this ability. We investigated the electrophysiological responses to tones in AP and relative pitch (RP) possessors while participants listened attentively to sine tones. Since event-related potentials are particularly suited for tracking tone encoding (N100 and P200), categorization (N200), and mnemonic functions (N400), we hypothesized that differences in early pitch processing stages would be reflected by increased N100 and P200-related areas in AP musicians. Otherwise, differences in later cognitive stages of tone processing should be mirrored by increased N200 and/or N400 areas in AP musicians. AP possessors exhibited larger N100 areas and a tendency towards enhanced P200 areas. Furthermore, the sources of these components were estimated and statistically compared between the two groups for a set of a priori defined regions of interest. AP musicians demonstrated increased N100-related current densities in the right superior temporal sulcus, middle temporal gyrus, and Heschl’s gyrus. Results are interpreted as indicating that early between-group differences in right-sided perisylvian brain regions might reflect auditory tone categorization rather than labelling mechanisms.

The neural networks involved in pitch labeling of absolute pitch musicians

Investigating the neural substrates of auditory processing of absolute pitch musicians has relevance for understanding the capabilities of the human brain for plasticity. Electroencephalography was used to examine the N1 of auditory-evoked potentials from absolute pitch musicians, nonabsolute pitch musicians, and nonmusicians during tone labeling tasks with and without presentation of a reference tone. Source localization using low-resolution electromagnetic tomography revealed that when labeling tones without a reference, absolute pitch musicians generated greater activity than nonabsolute pitch musicians in the left and right hemispheres. This suggests that when required to label tones without an external reference, absolute pitch musicians have the ability to recruit a greater network than nonabsolute pitch musicians or nonmusicians.

Effects of long-term potentiation in the human visual cortex: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study

Applying functional magnetic resonance imaging techniques, hemodynamic responses elicited by slowly flashing checkerboards (0.25 Hz) were measured both before and after a block of rapidly presented checkerboards (9 Hz -- a 'photic tetanus') was delivered. It has been shown previously, using electroencephalography, that this photic tetanus potentiates components of the visual-evoked potential. In the present study, hemodynamic responses in the extrastriate visual cortex were significantly increased to checkerboards presented at a low frequency after the administration of the photic tetanus. These results support the idea that long-term potentiation can be demonstrated non-invasively within the human visual cortex and provide evidence that the plastic changes are localized within the secondary visual cortex.

Increased right auditory cortex activity in absolute pitch possessors

We recorded the auditory-evoked magnetic fields from children and adults with absolute pitch during the following tasks: (1) hearing 1000 Hz pure tones inattentively, (2) hearing eight random tones inattentively and (3) listening to eight random tones and identifying each tone. In children with absolute pitch, there was no significant positive correlation between the appearance rate of N100m and the kinds of tasks. In adults with absolute pitch, only the right N100m dipole moments increased significantly in tasks (1) and (2). The present results suggest that the circuit for labeling in the right auditory cortex may lose a function from childhood to adulthood, which reveals neuroplasticity in the development of absolute pitch ability.

Auditory imagery mismatch negativity elicited in musicians

A mismatch between auditory sensation and expectant imagery of syllables elicited a possible equivalent of mismatch negativity in a previous study. The purpose of this study was to verify whether auditory imagery from musical notation could also mediate such imagery-based mismatch negativity. Neuromagnetic recording was obtained from eight musicians, who were instructed to identify unpredictably occurring pitch mismatches between a random tone sequence and a visually presented musical score. The difference between incongruent and congruent responses showed a magnetic distribution consistent with two frontal-negative current dipoles bilaterally located in the vicinity of Heschl's gyrus, peaking at approximately 150 ms in latency. This imagery-based mismatch negativity may represent an early neural process of deviance detection between the sensory input and expectant imagery.
