Abstract
OBJECTIVE Congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO) is a common lacrimal system anomaly in newborns and infants. We aimed to evaluate the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of persistent CNLDO and its potential use in diagnosis and follow up, focusing on novel inflammatory biomarkers: Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII), Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), Red cell distribution width (RDW), and Mean platelet volume (MPV). METHODS A retrospective case-control study involving 76 CNLDO patients and 47 age-matched healthy controls was conducted. Complete blood count parameters were analyzed to calculate SII, NLR, PLR, RDW, and MPV. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis determined the diagnostic efficacy of these markers. RESULTS SII, RDW, and neutrophil count were significantly elevated in the CNLDO group (p < 0.05). An elevated SII (cutoff > 200.9) demonstrated a sensitivity of 63.2% and a specificity of 63.8%. ROC analysis (AUC = 61.7%, p = 0.029) indicated that SII is a more significant marker for diagnosing CNLDO compared to NLR and PLR. CONCLUSION Elevated SII, indicative of systemic inflammation may serve as a significant biomarker in the diagnosis of CNLDO that does not resolve spontaneously and requires probing. SII > 200.9 acts as a threshold that aids in the diagnosis of persistent CNLDO. Being a valuable biomarker, SII can be used in monitoring patients with CNLDO and in identifying those who will require advanced treatment like probing. Prospective studies are essential to validate these findings.

Abstract
Background Inflammation plays a significant role in the proliferation, migration, and differentiation of lens epithelial cells after cataract surgery, clinically manifested as posterior capsule opacification (PCO). This condition is typically treated with neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy. Our objective is to evaluate the association between blood-derived inflammatory markers and the development of clinically significant PCO necessitating treatment with laser capsulotomy. Materials and Methods We conducted a retrospective review of charts for all patients who underwent Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy in our department between January 2021 and December 2022. The study included 70 patients who diagnosed with clinically significant PCO requiring treatment with Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy following cataract surgery, as well as 70 pseudophakic controls with no signs of PCO. Complete blood cell count parameters were obtained from medical records and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) were calculated. Results The mean age of the Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy and control group was 71.83±8.46 and 72.27±9.98 years, respectively. The preoperative NLR scores for the Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy group (mean rank = 34.43) were statistically significantly higher than those of the control group (mean rank = 25.41) (p = 0.044). However, after adjusting for preoperative measurements, no statistically significant differences were observed between the groups for the other parameters. Conclusion Preoperative NLR scores were higher in patients who developed clinically significant PCO requiring treatment with Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy. This finding suggests that patients with elevated systemic inflammation may be at an increased risk of developing PCO following cataract surgery. Further research is needed to evaluate the role of systemic inflammation in the pathogenesis of PCO.

Abstract
PURPOSE The goal of this meta-analysis is to examine the association between Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) and Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR) in patients with Retinal Artery Occlusion (RAO). The analysis aims to provide insight into the potential of NLR and PLR as inflammatory biomarkers for RAO. METHODS Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search in PubMed, Embase, and Scopus identified eight eligible studies. The analysis assessed serum NLR and PLR levels in RAO and non-RAO groups by employing standardized mean differences (SMDs). Sensitivity analyses and publication bias were examined. The diagnostic performance of these markers was evaluated with a quantitative synthesis. RESULTS The meta-analysis, involving 1,444 participants, demonstrated significantly elevated NLR (SMD = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.49-1.28, P < 0.001) and PLR (SMD = 0.45, 95% CI: 0.16-0.73, P < 0.001) levels in individuals with RAO. Significant heterogeneity was noted. Sensitivity analysis showed robustness and no significant publication bias was found. Summary results of diagnostic performance revealed promising discriminatory power for NLR and PLR. CONCLUSIONS The results support a possible connection between systemic inflammation, as indicated by NLR and PLR, and the occurrence of RAO. Although there was heterogeneity, sensitivity analyses showed the findings to be robust. While immediate diagnostic applications are limited, understanding the role of NLR and PLR in the pathological process of RAO provides valuable insights for developing future predictive models, risk management approaches, and treatment strategies. Further research exploring mechanistic insights and conducting prospective studies is warranted to validate their clinical utility. KEY MESSAGES What is known Retinal artery occlusion (RAO) is a serious condition with potential links to systemic inflammation and thrombosis. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are emerging inflammatory markers. What is new This is the first meta-analysis examining the association between NLR, PLR and RAO. Elevated NLR and PLR levels were observed in patients with RAO compared to controls. NLR and PLR show potential as indicators of systemic inflammation in RAO pathogenesis.

Abstract
Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) is an inflammatory autoimmune condition affecting the eyes, often associated with Graves' disease. Inflammation is important in TED, involving immune cells and orbital tissues. While inflammatory markers have been studied in other diseases, their role in TED is unclear. We included 734 participants from 5 eligible studies investigated associations between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) and TED. Initial analysis found no significant differences in these markers between TED and control groups. However, sensitivity analysis excluding an outlier study revealed significant differences in NLR, PLR, and MLR between groups, suggesting the potential association between these inflammatory markers and TED. More research is needed, but these findings indicate complex TED pathogenesis and that inflammation may offer insights for TED diagnosis and management.

Abstract
Introduction Glaucoma is the most common optic neuropathy and the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, which affects 3.54% of the population aged 40-80 years. Despite numerous published studies, some aspects of glaucoma pathogenesis, serum biomarkers, and their potential link with other diseases remain unclear. Recent articles have proposed that autoimmune, oxidative stress and inflammation may be involved in the pathogenesis of glaucoma. Methods We investigated the serum expression of 92 inflammatory and neurotrophic factors in glaucoma patients. The study group consisted of 26 glaucoma patients and 192 healthy subjects based on digital fundography. Results Patients with glaucoma had significantly lower serum expression of IL-2Rβ, TWEAK, CX3CL1, CD6, CD5, LAP TGF-beta1, LIF-R, TRAIL, NT-3, and CCL23 and significantly higher expression of IL-22Rα1. Conclusion Our results indicate that patients with glaucoma tend to have lower levels of neuroprotective proteins and higher levels of neuroinflammatory proteins, similar to those observed in psychiatric, neurodegenerative and autoimmune diseases, indicating a potential link between these conditions and glaucoma pathogenesis.

Abstract
Aim: To explore the association between two systemic inflammation markers, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and glaucoma. Materials & methods: The authors searched PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library for eligible studies comparing PLR and LMR levels in glaucoma patients and healthy controls. Results: Analysis revealed that glaucoma patients exhibited significantly elevated PLR levels and reduced LMR compared with nonglaucoma controls. These findings were consistent across various glaucoma types, with the exception of secondary glaucoma, where the association with PLR was less significant. Conclusion: The authors found PLR and LMR to be potential valuable biomarkers for glaucoma identification and progression monitoring. These findings highlight the role of systemic inflammation in glaucoma pathogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Inflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of cataract, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and possibly open-angle glaucoma (OAG). We assessed whether the inflammatory potential of diet (quantified using the dietary inflammatory index; DII) affects the incidence of these common blinding age-related eye diseases. Serum inflammation markers were investigated as possible mediators. METHODS Participants aged >45 years were selected from the prospective, population-based Rotterdam Study. From 1991 onwards, every 4-5 years, participants underwent extensive eye examinations. At baseline, blood samples and dietary data (using food frequency questionnaires) were collected. The DII was adapted based on the data available. Of the 7436 participants free of eye diseases at baseline, 4036 developed incident eye diseases during follow-up (cataract = 2895, early-intermediate AMD = 891, late AMD = 81, OAG = 169). RESULTS The adapted DII (aDII) ranged from -4.26 (i.e., anti-inflammatory) to 4.53 (i.e., pro-inflammatory). A higher aDII was significantly associated with increased inflammation. A higher neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) was associated with an increased risk of cataract and AMD. Additionally, complement component 3c (C3c) and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) were associated with increased risks of cataract and late AMD, respectively. Every point increase in the aDII was associated with a 9% increased risk of cataract (Odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 1.09 [1.04-1.14]). The NLR and C3c partly mediated this association. We also identified associations of the aDII with risk of AMD (early-intermediate AMD, OR [95% CI]: 1.11 [1.03-1.19]; late AMD, OR [95% CI]: 1.24 [1.02-1.53]). The NLR partly mediated these associations. The aDII was not associated with OAG. CONCLUSIONS A pro-inflammatory diet was associated with increased risks of cataract and AMD. Particularly the NLR, a marker of subclinical inflammation, appears to be implicated. These findings are relevant for patients with AMD and substantiate the current recommendations to strive for a healthy lifestyle to prevent blindness.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the pathogenesis of primary angle-closure disease (PACG) by measuring the anatomical structures of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye and inflammatory markers in the peripheral blood. METHODS This case-control study enrolled patients diagnosed with acute PACG (APACG) and chronic PACG (CPACG). It also enrolled control subjects without PACG. The anterior and posterior anatomical features were measured in all study participants. The levels of interleukin (IL)-6, tumour necrosis factor-α and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in the peripheral blood were measured. RESULTS This study analysed a total of 99 eyes: 34 eyes from 34 patients with APACG, 28 eyes from 28 patients with CPACG and 37 eyes from 37 control patients with senile cataract. The axis length, corneal diameter, anterior chamber depth and anterior chamber volume were significantly smaller in the APACG and CPACG groups compared with the controls. The level of IL-6 in the peripheral blood of patients with PACG was significantly lower than that of the controls. The NLR in the peripheral blood of patients with PACG was significantly greater than that of the controls. CONCLUSIONS Changes in the ocular anatomy and some inflammatory markers might be involved in the pathogenesis of PACG.

Abstract
Importance: Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world. The causal direction and magnitude of the association between blood cell traits and glaucoma is uncertain because of the susceptibility of observational studies to confounding and reverse causation. Objective: To explore whether there is a causal relationship of blood cell traits including white blood cell (WBC) count (WBCC) and its subtypes [basophil cell count (BASO), monocyte cell count (MONO), lymphocyte cell count (LYMPH), eosinophil cell count (EOS), neutrophil cell count (NEUT)], red blood cell (RBC) count (RBCC), red blood distribution width (RDW), platelet count (PLT), and plateletcrit (PCT) on glaucoma risk. Methods: A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted. Genome-wide significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from published genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on human blood cell traits were utilized as exposure instruments and the dataset for outcome was from the GWAS summary data of glaucoma. In the univariable MR analysis, we examined the association between genetic evidence of blood cell traits and glaucoma. To further investigate the potential causal mechanisms underlying the observed association, we performed multivariable MR analysis with three models, taking into account the mediator effect of inflammation and oxidative stress. According to Bonferroni-corrected for the 10 exposures in 3 methods, the MR study yielded a statistically significant p-value of 0.0017. Results: Genetically BASO, PCT, LYMPH, and PLT were potentially positively associated with glaucoma in the European ancestry [BASO: Odds ratio (OR) = 1.00122, 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.00003-1.00242, p = 0.045; PCT: OR = 1.00078, 95% CI, 1.00012-1.00143, p = 0.019; LYMPH: OR = 1.00076, 95% CI, 1.00002-1.00151, p = 0.045; PLT: OR = 1.00065, 95% CI, 1.00006-1.00123, p = 0.030], There was insufficient evidence to support a causal association of MONO, NEUT, EOS, WBCC, RBCC and RDW (MONO: OR = 1.00050, p = 0.098; NEUT: OR = 1.00028, p = 0.524; EOS: OR = 1.00020, p = 0.562; WBCC: OR = 1.00008, p = 0.830; RBCC: OR = 0.99996, p = 0.920; RDW: OR = 0.99987, p = 0.734) with glaucoma. The multivariable MR with model 1, 2, and 3 demonstrated that BASO, PCT, LYMPH, and PLT were still potentially genetically associated with the risk of glaucoma. Conclusion: Our study reveals a genetic predisposition to higher LYMPH, BASO, PLT, and PCT are associated with a higher risk of glaucoma, whereas WBCC, MONO, EOS, NEUT, RBCC, and RDW are not associated with the occurrence of glaucoma. This finding also supports previous observational studies associating immune components with glaucoma, thus provide guidance on the predication and prevention for glaucoma.

Abstract
Objectives Cochlear implant (CI) infection is the most common complication after CI surgery. We investigated whether the preoperative neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) values could predict the CI infection and the NLR and PLR values obtained at the first admission to the hospital with an CI infection could help the clinician in the diagnosis. Methods This retrospective case-controlled study included 26 patients with postsurgical CI infection. To prevent age-related incompatibility in the blood analysis of the infected group, the patients were divided into three age groups: 0-4 years, 5-18 years, and over 18 years old. To compare the infected group, 29 patients who did not have implant infection after CI surgery and whose age ranges were compatible with the infected group were randomly selected from the hospital records as the control group. The infected group preimplantation (PREs) and postinfection (POSTi) NLR and PLR values were compared with each other and the control group values. The area under the curve, sensitivity, specificity, and cutoff values were calculated by ROC analysis. Results The POSTi NLR values of the infected group patients aged 0-4 years and over 18 years were significantly greater than the PREs NLR values (p = .038 and p = .008, respectively). Significant differences were found between the POSTi NLR values of the infected group patients aged 0-4 years and over 18 years and those of PREs in the control group (p = .011 and p = .015, respectively). Conclusions Preoperative NLR and PLR values cannot predict postoperative CI infection. However, NLR and PLR values increased significantly after CI infection, even if systemic symptoms did not occur. At the first admission to the hospital, NLR values can guide the clinician in diagnosing the CI infection in patients between 0 and 4 years and over 18 years.Trial Registration Clinical Trials.gov Identifier: NCT04120181.

Abstract
Purpose The detailed effects of age and systemic factors on intraocular pressure (IOP) have not been fully understood because of the lack of a large-scale longitudinal investigation. This study aimed to investigate the effect of various systemic factors on the longitudinal change of IOP. Methods There were a total of 20,909 eyes of 10,471 subjects from a health checkup cohort that were followed up for systemic factors: (i) age at baseline, (ii) sex, (iii) time series body mass index (BMI), (iv) time series smoking habits, (v) time series systolic and diastolic blood pressures (SBP and DBP), and (vi) time series 19 blood examinations (all of the time series data was acquired at each annual visit), along with IOP annually for at least 8 years. Then the longitudinal effect of the systemic factors on the change of IOP was investigated. Results IOP significantly decreased by −0.084 mm Hg/year. BMI, SBP, DBP, smoking habits, total triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and glycosylated hemoglobin A1c were not significantly associated with the change of IOP. Higher values of age, aspartate aminotransferase, hemoglobin, platelet, and calcium were suggested to be significantly associated with the decrease of IOP, whereas higher alanine aminotransferase, guanosine triphosphate, white blood cell count, red blood cell count, and female gender were significantly associated with the increase of IOP. Conclusions Age, aspartate aminotransferase, hemoglobin, platelet, calcium, alanine aminotransferase, guanosine triphosphate, white blood cell count, red blood cell count, and gender were the systemic variables significantly associated with the change of IOP.

Abstract
The neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) reflects a dynamic relationship between the innate (neutrophils) and adaptive (lymphocytes) cellular immune response. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to critically evaluate the literature regarding the use of the NLR as a reliable means to detect several ocular disorders. Our study was registered with the PROSPERO (ID: CRD42022314850). Three databases, including PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and the Web of Science, were searched on September 9, 2022, with no restrictions on the article's language. Finally, 32 articles were recognized as eligible for our meta-analysis. We found that patients with eye diseases had significantly elevated levels of NLR in comparison to healthy controls (SMD =0.53, 95% CI =0.35-0.71, P < 0.001). In subgroup analysis, patients with keratoconus (SMD =0.69; 95% CI =0.33-1.05, P < 0.001), glaucoma (SMD =0.56, 95% CI =0.25-0.87, P < 0.001), pterygium (SMD =0.14; 95% CI =0.01-0.26, P < 0.001), and idiopathic epiretinal membrane (SMD =0.14; 95% CI =0.01-0.26, P < 0.001) had higher levels of NLR compared to healthy controls. However, NLR levels of patients with dry eye disease were similar to healthy controls (SMD =0.32, 95% CI = -0.49-1.13, P = 0.435). It can be said that NLR is a valuable marker of systemic inflammation, which is significantly increased in many eye disorders, suggesting that inflammation plays a key role in the pathophysiology of these diseases.

Systemic immune-inflammation index could be associated with pseudophakic cystoid macular edema after an uneventful phacoemulsification surgery in patients without risk factors. Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate the association between serum biomarkers and pseudophakic cystoid macular edema (PCME) in eyes without risk factors after uneventful phacoemulsification cataract surgery. METHODS This is a case-control study. Patients without risk factors and who developed clinically significant PCME after uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery were enrolled in the study. The age- and sex-matched control group that had normal fundus examination findings and 10/10 visual acuity in the first week, first month and following postoperative control visits was randomly recruited from the same study cohort. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) were obtained from the preoperative complete blood count (CBC) test and compared between the two groups. Linear regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between central macular thickness (CMT) and biomarkers. A binary logistic regression model was generated to evaluate the significance of the biomarkers in predicting PCME. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves of the significant parameters in the logistic regression model were presented to detect the area under the curve (AUC), the cut-off point, the sensitivity and the specificity. RESULTS The study cohort included 5352 patients. Of these patients, 52 (0.97%) met the inclusion criteria, and 60 age- and sex-matched patients were recruited as the control group. PLR, NLR, and SII were significantly different between the two groups (p = 0.006, p = 0.002, p < 0.001, respectively). According to the linear regression analysis, SII was found to have a significant relationship with CMT (p < 0.001). Only SII was assessed as significant in the logistic regression model (p = 0.046). In the ROC curve, the AUC of SII was 0.709. The sensitivity and specificity of SII for PCME prediction were 65.38% and 75%, respectively, and the cut-off point was 433.70. CONCLUSION SII is associated with the occurrence of PCME in eyes without risk factors after uneventful phacoemulsification surgery. SII could be a useful tool to predict PCME in eyes without risk factors.

Abstract
The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are emerging haematological inflammatory biomarkers. However, their significance in retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and its subtypes, branch and central RVO (BRVO and CRVO, respectively), is uncertain. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to clarify the association of NLR and PLR with RVO. We searched MEDLINE (Ovid), EMBASE (Ovid) and the Cochrane Library for studies investigating the association of NLR and PLR with RVO from inception to 2 December 2020. We used random-effects inverse-variance modelling to generate pooled effect measures. We used bivariate Bayesian modelling to meta-analyse the ability of NLR and PLR to differ between individuals with and without RVO and performed meta-regression and sensitivity analyses to explore inter-study heterogeneity. Eight studies published encompassing 1059 patients were included for analysis. Both NLR and PLR were significantly elevated in RVO, with pooled mean differences of 0.63 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.31-0.95) and 21.49 (95% CI 10.03-32.95), respectively. The pooled sensitivity, specificity and area under the Bayesian summary receiver operating characteristic curve were, respectively, 0.629 (95% credible interval (CrI) 0.284-0.872), 0.731 (95% CrI 0.373-0.934) and 0.688 (95% CrI 0.358-0.872) for NLR; and 0.645 (95% CrI 0.456-0.779), 0.616 (95% CrI 0.428-0.761) and 0.621 (95% CrI 0.452-0.741) for PLR. Mean and variability of age and diabetes mellitus prevalence partially explained between-study heterogeneity. NLR and PLR are significantly elevated in RVO. Future research is needed to investigate the potential prognostic value and independence of these findings.

Abstract
Age-related eye diseases, including dry eye, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, represent a major global health issue based on their increasing prevalence and disabling action. Unraveling the molecular mechanisms underlying these diseases will provide novel opportunities to reduce the burden of age-related eye diseases and improve eye health, contributing to sustainable development goals achievement. The impairment of neutrophil extracellular traps formation/degradation processes seems to be one of these mechanisms. These traps formed by a meshwork of DNA and neutrophil cytosolic granule proteins may exacerbate the inflammatory response promoting chronic inflammation, a pivotal cause of age-related diseases. In this review, we describe current findings that suggest the role of neutrophils and their traps in the pathogenesis of the above-mentioned age-related eye diseases. Furthermore, we discuss why these cells and their constituents could be biomarkers and therapeutic targets for dry eye, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. We also examine the therapeutic potential of some neutrophil function modulators and provide several recommendations for future research in age-related eye diseases.

Abstract
Acute methanol poisoning is a global health concern. This study was designed to compare the prognostic roles of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and their combination in the prediction of clinical outcomes in methanol-intoxicated patients as well as to evaluate their associations with all initial patients' characteristics. We conducted a cross-sectional study among methanol-intoxicated patients. A total of 109 patients were enrolled in the study. Thirty-four (31%) patients died during hospital admission while 30 (27.5%) patients developed visual loss. Most of the unfavorable findings were evident in patients with high NLR and PLR. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and PLR can excellently differentiate between survivors and non-survivors with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.991 vs 0.923, respectively. Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio showed an accepted discrimination ability to differentiate between patients who developed and patients who did not develop visual loss, AUC of 0.734, however, NLR showed no discrimination, AUC of 0.558. We concluded that NLR and PLR can serve as valuable tools in risk-stratifying patients and prognosticating outcomes in acute methanol poisoning. Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio is superior to NLR as a predictive factor in patients with permanent visual impairment. However, a combination of NLR with PLR can develop a more powerful prediction for overall clinical outcomes.

Abstract
Purpose: To assess the relationship and prognostic value of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) with poor final best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) after surgical repair of open globe injuries (OGI) in adults. Design: Retrospective analysis of data from an ongoing prospective cohort of consecutive patients. Methods: In a tertiary university hospital, 197 eyes of 197 patients were included between 2013 and 2017. NLR and PLR were obtained from pre-operative blood tests to analyze its relationship with poor final BCVA. Results: Severe visual impairment (SVI) was defined as ≤20/200, and was observed in 96 (48.7%) patients after surgical repair of OGI. SVI patients had higher NLR (7.4 ± 6.6 vs. 4.0 ± 3.2, p < 0.001), and PLR (167 ± 92 vs. 139 ± 64; p = 0.021) than non-SVI. NLR ≥ 3.47 and PLR ≥ 112.2 were the best cut-off values for SVI, were univariate risk factors for SVI, and had sensitivity: 69.0, 71.4, and specificity: 63.6, 44.8, respectively. In multivariate analysis, only OTS, athalamia, and hyphema remained as risk factors. NLR had significant correlation with ocular trauma score (OTS) (r = −0.389, p < 0.001) and final BCVA (r = 0.345, p < 0.001). Limitations: Simultaneous trauma in other parts of the body that could influence the laboratory findings. Conclusion: Patients with SVI after a repaired OGI had increased pre-operative NLR and PLR levels. High NLR and PLR are risk factors for SVI in univariate analysis. It is confirmed that low OTS is a risk factor for SVI. High NLR and PLR could be used as a prognostic tool to identify patients at higher risk for SVI after repair of OGI.

Abstract
RELEVANCE Accumulating evidence suggests a dysfunction of the para-inflammation in the retinal ganglion cell layer and the optic nerve head in patients with glaucoma. Currently, circulating blood platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) are regarded as novel indicators of systemic inflammation. Biomarkers allow early identification of patients with visual field (VF) loss progression and timely implementation of replacement therapies. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate whether higher inflammatory indices (PLR, NLR, and LMR) were associated with VF loss progression in patients with primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) for the predictive diagnostics, targeted prevention, and personalization of medical services. METHODS This prospective cohort study followed up 277 patients with PACG for at least 24 months, with clinical examination and VF testing every 6 months. Inflammatory cell quantification, including platelets, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes, was measured using the Sysmex XN-A1 automated inflammatory cells quantification system. Three systemic inflammatory indices, PLR, NLR, and LMR, were determined on the basis of baseline neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, and platelet counts in patients with PACG. The risk factors for PACG were analyzed using logistic regression, Cox proportional hazards regression, and the Kaplan-Meier curve. RESULTS Our results revealed that 111 (40.07%) patients showed VF loss progression. The PLR was significantly higher (P = 0.046) in the progression group than in the non-progression group. A higher PLR (OR 1.05, 95% CI 1.01-1.08, P = 0.004) was a risk factor for PACG progression. In multivariate analyses, PLR independently predicted VF loss progression (HR 1.01, 95% CI 1.00-1.01, P = 0.04). Kaplan-Meier curve analysis showed that higher PLR indicated significantly higher rates of VF loss progression (66.91% vs. 52.90%, P = 0.03). Comparable results were observed in the male and female subgroups. CONCLUSION Our findings revealed the significant association between a high PLR and a greater risk of VF loss progression in patients with PACG. PLR may be highly recommended as a novel predictive/diagnostic tool for the assessment of VF loss progression from the perspectives of predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine in vulnerable populations and for individual screening. Abstract
PURPOSE It was aimed to compare the levels of inflammation-related parameters, such as neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), in patients with advanced keratoconus (KC) and healthy controls. Also, we evaluated the relationships between these parameters and several corneal topography values used in the KC diagnostic index. METHODS Forty patients with advanced and 40 healthy volunteers were included in this study. In the KC group, 20 patients were nonprogressive KC and 20 patients were progressive KC. In all participating individuals, we evaluated detailed ophthalmologic examination findings and complete blood count data, while corneal topographic measurements were also recorded in patients with KC. RESULTS The mean NLR value was 2.3 ± 1.19 in the progressive KC group; nonprogressive KC values were 1.99 ± 1.69 and 1.81 ± 0.72 in the control group. Mean PLR value was 113.24 ± 48.44 in the progressive KC group, nonprogressive KC values were 96.47 ± 31.04 and 104.09 ± 35.14 in the control group. No statistically significant difference was found between patients with progressive KC, nonprogressive KC, and healthy volunteers in terms of mean NLR and PLR values (P > 0.05). NLR values were found to demonstrate significant positive correlations with the corneal topography parameters, Symmetry Index front (r = 0.278, P = 0.025), KC Vertex front (r = 0.247, P = 0.048), and Baiocchi Calossi Versaci front (r = 0.273, P = 0.028); there was no significant relationship between corneal topography parameters and PLR values. CONCLUSION Although there was no significant difference between the progressive KC, nonprogressive KC, and control groups in inflammation parameters such as NLR and PLR, a positive correlation was observed between the NLR value and some corneal topography findings used in the diagnosis of KC. The role of inflammation in the etiology of KC can be better understood by clinical studies and laboratory tests conducted with prospective studies involving a higher number of patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate systemic inflammatory parameters in patients with corneal graft rejection after low-risk penetrating keratoplasty. METHODS Patients undergoing penetrating keratoplasty with indications of keratoconus, pseudophakic bullous keratopathy, and Fuchs endothelial dystrophy were analyzed retrospectively. Patients who had an endothelial rejection attack within two years post-transplant were included in the rejection group (n = 20), whereas patients with at least two years of post-transplant follow-up without graft rejection or failure were included in the control group (n = 46). All patients' clinical features and preoperative laboratory parameters were obtained from hospital records. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio, and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio of the groups were calculated and compared. RESULTS There was no difference between the two groups in terms of age, sex, indication, postmortem time and storage time of grafts, graft diameter, follow-up time, and common systemic diseases (p > 0.05). The NLR was found to be significantly lower in the rejection group when compared with the control group (2.04 ± 1.17, 2.66 ± 0.91, respectively, p = 0.023). There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of MLR and PLR (p = 0.243, p = 0.101, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Although a high NLR value, which is an indicator of systemic inflammatory condition, is associated with many ocular diseases, NLR was found to be lower in patients with a rejection episode after transplant surgery when compared with the control group. Further studies are needed to clarify the role of these hematologic parameters in graft rejection.

Abstract
Glaucoma is an insidious group of eye diseases causing degeneration of the optic nerve, progressive loss of vision, and irreversible blindness. The number of people affected by glaucoma is estimated at 80 million in 2021, with 3.5% prevalence in people aged 40-80. The main biomarker and risk factor for the onset and progression of glaucoma is the elevation of intraocular pressure. However, when glaucoma is diagnosed, the level of retinal ganglion cell death usually amounts to 30-40%; hence, the urgent need for its early diagnosis. Molecular biomarkers of glaucoma, from proteins to metabolites, may be helpful as indicators of pathogenic processes observed during the disease's onset. The discovery of human glaucoma biomarkers is hampered by major limitations, including whether medications are influencing the expression of molecules in bodily fluids, or whether tests to validate glaucoma biomarker candidates should include human subjects with different types and stages of the disease, as well as patients with other ocular and neurodegenerative diseases. Moreover, the proper selection of the biofluid or tissue, as well as the analytical platform, should be mandatory. In this review, we have summarized current knowledge concerning proteomics- and metabolomics-based glaucoma biomarkers, with specificity to human eye tissue and fluid, as well the analytical approach and the main results obtained. The complex data published to date, which include at least 458 different molecules altered in human glaucoma, merit a new, integrative approach allowing for future diagnostic tests based on the absolute quantification of local and/or systemic biomarkers of glaucoma.

Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) using the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) as inflammation markers. Methods: The files of 33 IIH patients and 33 controls were screened for this retrospective study. For each patient, the NLR and PLR values were calculated using a single fasting blood sample. For both eyes, papilledema (PE) grades, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT), and ganglion cell layer thickness (GCLT) measurements were recorded along with the demographic data, including body mass index (BMI), and complete neurological and ophthalmological findings. Comparisons between the two groups and between the IIH patients with and without PE were made. The associations of NLR and PLR with all other parameters were analyzed independently from age, gender, and BMI. Results: NLR and PLR were higher in patients with IIH than controls (P < 0.05). They were also higher in patients with PE (P < 0.05) in the IIH group. NLR and PLR were found to be associated with BCVA (P < 0.001 and P = 0.023, respectively), global RNFLT (P = 0.004 and 0.012, respectively), RNFLT of the temporal quadrant (P < 0.001 and P = 0.042, respectively) and PE grade (P < 0.001 and P = 0.035, respectively). Conclusion: The NLR and PLR values and their associations with BCVA, RNFLT, and PE support the hypothesis that inflammation is a very important component of the pathogenesis of IIH.

Abstract
Purpose To assess the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM) using the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and mean platelet volume (MPV) as indicators of inflammation and to compare these parameter levels between iERM and control subjects. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 36 patients who underwent vitrectomy-ERM peeling and 39 patients who had cataract surgery. We obtained blood samples from all individuals who participated in the study to investigate these parameters. Results Seventy-five subjects were included in this study: 36 in the iERM group and 39 in the control group. The mean neutrophil and MPV levels were significantly higher in iERM subjects than in control subjects. The mean lymphocyte level was lower in the iERM group. The mean NLR, PLR, and MPV levels were higher in iERM subjects than in control subjects. Conclusion The higher NLR, PLR, and MPV levels found in patients with iERM may indicate that subclinical systemic inflammation may associate with iERM.

Abstract
Background The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have been used as indicators of inflammation, however, their roles in dry eye disease (DED) patients require advanced study. Materials and Methods A total of 104 DED cases and 97 healthy controls from January 2020 to May 2020 were enrolled in this study. The dry eye related clinical variables, including Schirmer I test, tear break-up time (TBUT), corneal fluorescein staining (CFS) and Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), were detected in all the participants. Besides, the NLR and PLR pattern in DED cases were detected and their potential value as inflammatory predictors of DED were evaluated. In advanced analyses, the correlation between NLR and DED severity was examined. Results The NLR and PLR were 2.59 ± 1.25 and 117.48 ± 54.68 in the DED group, respectively, while they were 2.20 ± 1.24 and 115.48 ± 54.33 in the control group, respectively. The NLR was higher in the DED group (p = 0.027), however, PLR was not significantly different compared with the control group (p = 0.951). In advanced analyses, it was found that more severe TBUT, CFS, and OSDI scores were detected in the high NLR group (NLR ≥2.145, p = 0.003, 0.013, and 0.017, respectively) compared with the low NLR group (NLR <2.145). Conclusion The NLR value, but not PLR, of DED patients was higher than that of healthy controls. The NLR could be used as an inflammatory predictor to estimate the severity of DED.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between dipping status of blood pressure (BP), visual field defects (VFDs), and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in patients with normotensive glaucoma (NTG). Our University echocardiography, electrocardiogram, 24-hour BP monitor and glaucoma database were reviewed from 2016 to 2018 to identify patients with NTG and hypertension (HTN). These NTG patients were followed for a mean 26.4 ± 13.6 months and were divided into 2 groups according to the absence or presence of VFDs. Among the 110 patients with NTG, 55 (50%) patients had VFDs. There were no differences of baseline characteristics between 2 groups. In univariate analysis, extreme dipper status at night in the 24-hour BP monitoring, HTN, age, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia were significantly associated with VFDs. In multivariate analysis, extreme dipper status at night in the 24-hour BP monitoring (odds ratio [OR] 4.094; P = .045) and HTN (OR 2.368; P = .048) were independent risk factors for VFDs at 2-year follow-up. Moreover, the RNFL thickness was thinner in NTG patients with VFDs (P < .001). VFDs group had more increased fluctuation of systolic and diastolic BP in 24-hour BP monitoring and that the extreme dipper status at night in the 24-hour BP monitoring and HTN itself were also associated with higher incidence of VFDs and thinning changes of the RNFL in patients with NTG, suggesting that more intensive medical therapy with close clinical follow-up will be required for these patients.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) in patients with non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). Methods Fifty-six patients with NAION and 60 age-sex matched healthy controls were included in the study. Demographic characteristics and laboratory findings of the patients and the controls were obtained from the electronic medical records. NLR, PLR, MLR, and SII were calculated and compared between the groups. Cutoff values were also determined. Results Neutrophil, monocyte and platelet counts were higher in the NAION group than in the control group, but the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The mean NLR and SII were higher in the NAION group than in the control group (p = 0.004 and p = 0.011, respectively). In the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, the areas under the curve for NLR were 0.67, and NLR >1.79 predicted NAION with a sensitivity of 71% and specificity of 59%. The areas under the curve for SII was 0.66, and SII of >417 predicted NAION with a sensitivity of 71% and specificity of 49%. There was no significant difference in PLR and MLR between the groups (p = 0.105 and p = 0.347, respectively). Conclusions The current study demonstrated that NAION patients had increased NLR and SII levels compared with control subjects. Elevated NLR and SII might serve as readily available inflammatory predictors in NAION patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate inflammatory indices of complete blood count (CBC) in patients with Fuchs uveitis syndrome (FUS), and to compare the results with healthy individuals. DESIGN Cross-sectional, comparative study. PARTICIPANTS A total of 140 participants were included in the study and divided into 2 groups: 70 patients diagnosed with FUS (FUS group) and 70 healthy individuals (control group). METHODS The groups were compared in terms of ocular examination findings and CBC parameters. The independent samples t test was used to examine variables between the groups. The Pearson correlation test was performed to analyze correlation among the severity of anterior chamber reaction, duration of FUS, and CBC indices. RESULTS The mean lymphocyte count and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) were significantly higher in the FUS group than in the control group (p = 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively). The mean monocyte count and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were significantly lower in the FUS group than in the control group (p = 0.010 and p = 0.003, respectively). In the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, the area under the curve (AUC) for LMR was 0.834, with a sensitivity of 82.6% and a specificity of 80.0%. The AUC for NLR was 0.789, with a sensitivity of 71.2% and a specificity of 70.0%. LMR was positively correlated with duration of FUS (p = 0.001, r = 0.574). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that decreased NLR and increased LMR values may be markers indicating impaired blood-aqueous barrier function in FUS.

Abstract
Purpose: To investigate platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in retinal vein occlusion
(RVO) patients. Methods: In this study, we retrospectively reviewed data of 32 patients with RVO (RVO
group) and 32 age- and sex-matched participants without RVO (control group)
between January 2017 and March 2019. The PLR was determined by dividing the
platelet count by the lymphocyte count. Results: Age and gender were comparable between the groups (p = 0.204
and p = 0.800, respectively). PLR was significantly
elevated in the RVO group compared with the control group (137 (113–164) vs
101 (86–129), p = 0.001)). In the receiver operator
characteristics curve analysis, the optimal cut-off value of PLR for
predicting RVO was 123, with 69% sensitivity and 72% specificity. Conclusion: We report that PLR are elevated in RVO, suggesting that PLR may be a useful
marker for RVO.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in idiopathic epiretinal membrane (IERM) patients, and their relations with visual acuity. METHOD Fifty-seven IERM and 51 control patients were included. All patients underwent comprehensive ophthalmological examination and complete blood count tests, and NLR and PLR values were calculated. Patients with IERM were compared with the control group, and associations with visual prognosis were evaluated. These ratios' cut-off values for IERM were also calculated RESULTS: NLR values were statistically significantly higher in the IERM group than in the control group (p = 0.001). No significant difference was observed between the IERM and control groups in terms of PLR (p = 0.43). No significant correlation was determined between visual acuity and NLR or PLR (r = 0.05, p = 0.66; and r = 0.18, p = 0.16, respectively). The cut-off value for NLR was 1.91. CONCLUSION Patients with IERM showed significantly increased NLR compared to control subjects suggesting that IERM patients may be prone to have high NLR values.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare parameters of systemic inflammation and serum lipid levels in patients with pterygium versus healthy individuals. METHODS Thirty-five patients with pterygium and 30 healthy individuals were enrolled as two respective groups in a retrospective study. The participants' complete blood count (CBC) parameters and levels of serum total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and triglycerides (TG) were obtained from digital records and compared. Their neutrophil/lymphocyte, platelet/lymphocyte, and monocyte/HDL ratios were calculated and compared as well. As secondary outcomes, longitudinal length (LL), basal length (BL), and total area (TA) of pterygium among the patients were quantitatively measured by using ImageJ software. Correlations between serum parameters and pterygium measurements were analyzed. RESULTS Although between-group differences in CBC parameters and the ratios were not statistically significant, HDL levels were significantly lower (p = 0.014) and TG levels significantly higher (p = 0.031) among patients with pterygium than among the controls. A positive correlation was detected between the patient's age and the pterygium's BL (p = 0.002, r = 0.516), LL (p = 0.00, r = 0.547), and TA (p = 0.00, r = 0.515). Neutrophil levels negatively correlated with LL (p = 0.025, β = - 0.308) and TA (p = 0.002, β = - 0.420). CONCLUSION Local instead of systemic inflammation should be considered in the management of pterygium. Besides, decreased HDL levels may indicate systemic oxidative stress in patients with the condition.

Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate inflammation-sensitive parameters, namely the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), eosinophil count, erythrocyte distribution width (RDW), and CRP/albumin ratio in patients with keratoconus (KC).Methods: Thirty-five patients with KC and 30 healthy people (control group) were included in the study. Complete blood count measurements were performed in all subjects, and NLR, PLR and the CRP/albumin ratio were calculated.Results: NLR was determined as 2.01 ± 0.53 in patients with KC and 1.97 ± 0.41 in the control group. PLR was 146.20 ± 23.32 in the KC group and 121.45 ± 31.75 in the healthy group. The CRP/albumin ratio was determined as 0.33 ± 0.09 in the KC group and 0.29 ± 0.11 in the healthy group.Conclusion: Although no significant difference was found between the groups in terms of NLR, CRP/albumin ratio and RDW levels, PLR was significantly higher in the KC group.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to evaluate whether the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and systemic immune inflammation index (SII) were associated with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective case-control study included 240 patients with POAG and 300 age- and sex-matched control subjects. Complete ophthalmological examination and blood count measurements were performed for all subjects. RESULTS The values of NLR, PLR, and SII in the POAG group were significantly increased compared with the control group (p < 0.001; p = 0.012; p < 0.001). However, the LMR value was lower in the POAG patients than in the control group (p < 0.001). When we divided the subjects into different age and gender subgroups, the NLR and SII values in the POAG patients were always higher than those in the control group. In the comparison of laboratory parameters in POAG subjects stratified according to severity, we also found that NLR and SII increased with the severity. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis revealed that the areas under the ROC curve of NLR, PLR, LMR, and SII to predict patients with POAG were found to be 0.627, 0.569, 0.382, and 0.986, respectively. The best cutoff point of NLR was 1.998 with a sensitivity of 59.8% and a specificity of 63.0%, and the SII was 947.365 with a sensitivity of 95.4% and a specificity of 95.7%. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that NLR was positively associated with mean deviation; moreover, NLR and SII were independent indicators correlated with POAG (OR 1.502; 95% CI 1.227-1.839; p < 0.001; OR 1.02; 95% CI 1.009-1.021; p < 0.001). CONCLUSION We speculated that elevated NLR and SII might serve as readily available inflammatory predictors in POAG patients.

Abstract
AIM To summarize the results of studies investigating neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and to identify the role of NLR in ocular diseases. METHODS With the aim of identifying the studies related to NLR, a search was conducted on http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed by utilizing the key words "neutrophil lymphocyte ratio, ocular diseases, and eye diseases" up to February 2018. All of the original articles were assessed according to date of publications, countries, clinics and topics. Studies about ocular inflammatory diseases were evaluated according to their qualifications, review methods and results. RESULTS A total of 4473 publications, including original research articles and reviews were screened. The number of publications was shown a regular logarithmic increase over the years. The majority of studies were performed by clinics in Turkey and many of these publications were performed by oncology and cardiology clinics. A total of 75 publications were identified to be about ocular diseases. CONCLUSION Elevated NLR as a cheap, reproducible, and readily available marker could be used as a diagnostic and/or prognostic marker in ocular diseases.

Abstract
Purpose Blood-based examination tools for glaucoma diagnosis in clinical practice, which can be useful for screening patients when traditional ophthalmic examinations cannot be utilized, are not available thus far. This study aimed to identify circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) associated with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and explore their utility as diagnostic markers. Methods A total of 136 POAG patients and controls were enrolled. Next-generation RNA sequencing was used to explore the expression profile of circulating miRNAs in the sequencing set, and potential miRNAs from independent samples in both the screening and validation sets were validated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to evaluate the ability of certain miRNAs to distinguish POAG patients from control subjects. Results Using sequencing and qRT-PCR, hsa-miR-210-3p was found to be elevated in POAG patients in all sets. ROC analysis of the screening and validation sets revealed that hsa-miR-210-3p differentiated between POAG patients and matched controls with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.846 (sensitivity: 84.6%; specificity: 80.8%) and 0.813 (sensitivity: 84.8%; specificity: 69.7%), respectively. In case of all nonsequencing participants, analysis revealed that hsa-miR-210-3p differentiated between severe POAG patients and controls with an AUC of 0.880 (sensitivity: 85.4%; specificity: 85.7%). In addition, the expression of hsa-miR-210-3p was associated with visual field defects of |mean deviation| (β = 0.237; P = 0.022) and average retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (β = -5.792; P = 0.014). Conclusions Circulating hsa-miR-210-3p may serve as a potential diagnostic marker for POAG (especially for severe POAG patients).

Abstract
Purpose: Increased systemic/local inflammation and oxidative stress play a key role in the pathophysiology of pterygium, but there is limited information regarding routine hematological indices’ levels in patients with pterygium. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the levels of complete blood count parameters in patients with pterygium. Material and Method: In all, 61 patients with pterygium (pterygium group; mean age = 51.4 ± 13.8 years) and 55 healthy individuals (control group; mean age = 50.2 ± 13.1 years) were included in the study. Participants were given routine ophthalmic examinations; complete blood count parameters were assayed. Results: Compared to the control group, red cell distribution width level was significantly higher in patients with pterygium (p = 0.009), but the difference between the groups in terms of the other complete blood count parameters was not statistically significant. However, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level was significantly lower in the pterygium group than control group (p = 0.015). In the pterygium group, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were lower, but this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.079). Conclusion: Red cell distribution width levels were significantly increased in patients with pterygium. Our data support the idea that inflammation cytokines and oxidative stress may play an important role in the pathogenesis of this disorder.

Abstract
Purpose: To investigate the relation between high axial myopia and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) values.Methods: Seventy-nine cases were enrolled, 50 myopic and 29 emmetropic. All participants were assigned into three groups: Group I (high myopia with no retinal involvement), Group II (high myopia with retinal involvement) and Group III (control). NLR and PLR values calculated from blood tests were compared among the groups.Results: Mean NLR levels were 2.23 ± 0.78 in Group I, 2.36 ± 1.06 in Group II, and 1.57 ± 0.33 in Group III. Mean PLR levels were 114.62 ± 23.21 in Group I, 145.16 ± 52.36 in Group II, and 91.42 ± 18.73 in Group III. NLR and PLR values in the high myopia groups were significantly higher than in the control group.Conclusion: NLR and PLR values in cases with high axial myopia were higher than in the emmetropic group. Higher inflammation in the degenerative myopic group in particular may be related to pathological chorioretinal changes.

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the mean platelet volume (MPV) in patients with active thyroid orbitopathy (TO) and to compare it with that of both healthy subjects and patients with inactive TO. Methods: Twenty patients with active TO (Group 1), 25 patients with inactive TO (Group 2), and 35 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects (Group 3) were included in this study. Patients with other systemic and ocular diseases, patients with a history of intraocular or orbital surgery, and patients using systemic drugs were excluded. The VISA (vision, inflammation, strabismus, appearance) classification scheme was used to discriminate between active and inactive TO. The neutrophil and lymphocyte counts and the MPV of all participants were recorded. The NLR was calculated by dividing the neutrophil count by the lymphocyte count, and the result was compared between groups. The optimal cut-off value was determined for NLR and MPV and the data were compared with a one-way analysis of variance test and the ’Bonferroni post-test. Results: The mean age was 45.4±13.4, 41.0±13.7, and 42.6±14.4 years in Group 1, 2, and 3, respectively (p=0.68). The NLR was 2.11 in Group 1, 1.56 in Group 2, and 1.47 in Group 3 (p=0.03). The ’Bonferroni post-test revealed a difference between Group 1 and Group 2 (p=0.01) and between Group 1 and Group 3 (p<0.001). The MPV was 10.76 fL in Group 1, 9.94 fL in Group 2, and 8.19 fL in Group 3 (p<0.001). The results of the ’Bonferroni post-test showed a difference between Group 1 and Group 2 (p=0.04), between Group 1 and Group 3 (p<0.001), and between Group 2 and Group 3 (p<0.001). The mean cut-off value obtained from receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis of NLR was 1.69 (sensitivity: 72%; specificity: 66%). The mean cut-off value obtained from ROC analysis of MPV was 9.95 (sensitivity: 63%; specificity: 66%). Conclusion: High NLR and MPV values may be indicative of active inflammation in patients with TO.”

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the possible relationship between AAION (arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy) and NAION (non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy) with blood platelet parameters and NLR (neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio). The medical records of 12 patients with AAION, 33 patients with NAION, and 35 healthy subjects were examined. MPV, PDW, and PCT values showed marked elevation in AAION and NAION groups compared with control group. The mean NLR was statistically significantly higher only in AAION group compared to the NAION and control groups, suggesting that platelet function plays an important role in AIONs and NLR might be used to differentiate AAION from NAION.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the levels of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in patients with idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM) and to compare the NLR results of patients with iERM and healthy controls. METHODS This retrospective study enrolled 43 patients with iERM and 40 healthy subjects. Complete ophthalmologic examination and complete blood count measurements were performed of all subjects. Complete blood counts were performed within 2 h of blood collection. RESULTS There was a significant difference in NLR between iERM and control groups (p < 0.01). The receiver operating characteristics analysis revealed that the value of NLR to distinguish patients with iERM and controls was found to be 0.832. The best cutoff value was 1.90, with a sensitivity of 72% and specificity 70%. CONCLUSIONS Our study for the first time provides evidence that subclinical systemic inflammation may cause or at least accompanies iERM using a novel biomarker NLR.

Abstract
Objective Inflammatory mechanisms may have a role in the pathogenesis of primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG). The objective of this study was to investigate the diagnostic value of white blood cell (WBC), neutrophil, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR) in patients with PACG and its association with glaucoma severity. Method The study was retrospectively assessed in 771 consecutive PACG patients and 770 control subjects, laboratory parameters and clinical parameters were obtained from a medical data platform. Patients were divided into three groups with different severity based on perimetry, i.e. mild (mean deviation (MD) ≤6.00 dB), moderate (12 dB≥ MD>6 dB) and severe (MD>12 dB). We developed a nomogram to specifically identify individual patient’s risk. Results The mean levels of neutrophil, NLR and WBC was higher in PACG than control group, and lowest in the mild PACG group, followed by moderate PACG and severe PACG (p<0.05). The AUROC value of NLR and LMR was found to be 0.719, 0.699, respectively. Multiple linear regressions showed that there was a significant correlation between WBC and MD (B=0.151, p<0.001), neutrophil and MD (B=0.143, p=0.003), NLR and MD (B=0.144, p=0.001), LMR and MD (B=-0.100, p=0.034). Logistic regression analyses revealed that WBC (OR=1.208, 95%CI=1.179-1.238), neutrophil (OR=1.598, 95%CI=1.541-1.656), NLR (OR=2.313, 95%CI=2.200-2.431), and LMR (OR=0.682, 95%CI=0.666-0.699) were associated with PACG. Conclusion Our study suggested that WBC, neutrophil, NLR, and LMR was related with PACG, and NLR and LMR may be useful as biomarkers.
