The use of 3D-printed titanium mesh tray in treating complex comminuted mandibular fractures: A case report

In-house virtual surgical planning and guided mandibular reconstruction is less precise, but more economical and time-efficient than commercial procedures

BACKGROUND

To compare an in-house and a commercially available surgical planning solution for mandibular reconstruction in terms of postoperative reconstruction accuracy and economic benefit.

METHODS

Twenty-nine consecutive patients with advanced oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) requiring segmental mandibular reconstruction were enrolled. Fifteen patients underwent in-house surgical planning and 14 patients underwent a commercially available planning solution. A morphometric comparison of preoperative and postoperative computed tomography (CT) data sets and a cost-benefit comparison were performed.

RESULTS

Volumes of planned and reconstructed bone segments differed significantly for both in-house planning (p = 0.0431) and commercial planning (p < 0.0001). Significant differences in osteotomy angles were demonstrated for in-house planning (p = 0.0391). Commercial planning was superior to in-house planning for total mandibular deviation (p = 0.0217), intersegmental space volumes (p = 0.0035), and lengths (p = 0.0007). No significant difference was found between the two planning solutions in terms of intersegmental ossification and the incidence of wound healing disorders. In-house planning took less time than commercial planning (p < 0.0001). Component manufacturing costs (p < 0.0001) and total cumulative costs (p < 0.0001) were significantly lower for in-house planning.

CONCLUSIONS

In-house surgical planning is less accurate but has a cost advantage and could be performed in less time.

A Cone Bean Computer Tomography Investigation of the Newly Formed Mandibular Anterior Ridge following the Treatment of an Extended Comminuted Fracture: A 12-Year Follow-Up

Introduction

Extensive comminuted fractures are associated with tooth loss that ultimately leads to dimensional changes in the hard and soft tissues of the alveolar ridge. Reconstruction of the lost mandibular anterior ridge is very complex due to the natural curvature of the region. Case Presentation. In this case report, the combination of the modified shell technique with autologous bone plates and the guided bone regeneration (GBR) technique was performed on an 18-year-old patient after a comminuted fracture, to ensure new bone formation in the anterior ridge with a natural curvature. After the treatment progressed without complications, three dental implants were placed. Annual cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were obtained and evaluated using the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP© 2.10). This allowed measurements of the buccal and lingual bone around the implants, showing the annual bone loss in a twelve-year observation period. Discussion. The treatment of the comminuted fracture and the combination of the modified shell technique with autologous bone plates, the GBR technique, and implant placement can be considered successful. The three dental implants were osseointegrated in 2010, with the buccal bone level averaging 1.31 mm below the implant shoulder and the lingual bone level 1.57 mm above the implant shoulder. In 2021, the measurements showed a bone loss of 0.99 mm at the buccal implant shoulder and 0.69 mm at the lingual implant shoulder.

Conclusion

The combination of the modified shell technique with autologous bone plates and the GBR technique is a reliable method to ensure new bone formation in the anterior ridge. The use of CBCT is an excellent method to evaluate bone resorption around dental implants, but due to minimal bone resorption in the observation period, an annual CBCT examination is exaggerated.

Application of CAD-CAM Technologies for Maxillofacial Bone Regeneration: A Narrative Review of the Clinical Studies

The application of regenerative methods in treating maxillofacial defects can be categorized as functional bone regeneration in which scaffolds without protection are used and in-situ bone regeneration in which a protected healing space is created to induce bone formation. It has been shown that functional bone regeneration can reduce surgical time and obviate the necessity of autogenous bone grafting. However, studies mainly focused on applying this method to reconstruct minor bone effects, and more investigation concerning the large defects is required. In terms of in situ maxillofacial bone regeneration with the help of CAD-CAM technologies, the present data have suggested feasible mesh rigidity, perseverance of the underlying space, and apt augmentative results with CAD-CAM-based individualized Ti meshes. However, complications, including dehiscence and mesh exposure, coupled with consequent graft loss, infection and impeded regenerative rates have also been reported.

Early Surgical Management of Displaced Orbital Roof Fractures: Prospective Observational Study

This study aimed to evaluate the clinical, radiological and functional outcome of early (within 24 h) surgical intervention of displaced orbital roof fractures. This is a prospective observational study for patients with displaced orbital roof fractures. Six patients underwent early surgical management within hours of admission. The primary outcome variables were functional and aesthetic (evaluated through clinical and radiological assessments). The rate of immediate and delayed complications over a 6-months minimum follow-up period was recorded. All patients were males. The median age at the time of presentation was 23.5 years ranging from 4 to 40 years. The etiology was a high impact traffic accident in all patients. In three patients, the orbital roof fractures were unilateral, and in the other three patients, the fractures were bilateral. All patients were treated via transcranial approach at the same time as the neurosurgery. The median follow-up period was 10 months ranging from 6 to 15 months. During the follow-up period, there were no signs of meningitis, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, facial asymmetry, enophthalmos, exophthalmos, restriction of ocular motility, or blindness. Traumatic optic neuropathy was present in two patients (one unilateral and the other bilateral), of whom, one patient achieved full visual acuity recovery, while the other patient showed a mild decrease in visual acuity which improved within 6 months (OD;20/30, OS;20/25). One patient had mild ptosis and recovered spontaneously within 3 months after surgery. Postoperative CT scans showed a good anatomical reconstruction of orbital roof fracture in all cases. Early definite management of displaced orbital roof fractures secures reliable functional and cosmetic results and reduces the incidences of intracranial and ocular complications.

Virtual surgical planning in craniomaxillofacial surgery: a structured review

Craniomaxillofacial (CMF) surgery is a challenging and very demanding field that involves the treatment of congenital and acquired conditions of the face and head. Due to the complexity of the head and facial region, various tools and techniques were developed and utilized to aid surgical procedures and optimize results. Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP) has revolutionized the way craniomaxillofacial surgeries are planned and executed. It uses 3D imaging computer software to visualize and simulate a surgical procedure. Numerous studies were published on the usage of VSP in craniomaxillofacial surgery. However, the researchers found inconsistency in the previous literature which prompted the development of this review. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the findings of the studies by conducting an integrated approach to synthesize the literature related to the use of VSP in craniomaxillofacial surgery. Twenty-nine related articles were selected as a sample and synthesized thoroughly. These papers were grouped assigning to the four subdisciplines of craniomaxillofacial surgery: orthognathic surgery, reconstructive surgery, trauma surgery and implant surgery. The following variables - treatment time, the accuracy of VSP, clinical outcome, cost, and cost-effectiveness - were also examined. Results revealed that VSP offers advantages in craniomaxillofacial surgery over the traditional method in terms of duration, predictability and clinical outcomes. However, the cost aspect was not discussed in most papers. This structured literature review will thus provide current findings and trends and recommendations for future research on the usage of VSP in craniomaxillofacial surgery.

An overview of 3D printed metal implants in orthopedic applications: Present and future perspectives

With the ability to produce components with complex and precise structures, additive manufacturing or 3D printing techniques are now widely applied in both industry and consumer markets. The emergence of tissue engineering has facilitated the application of 3D printing in the field of biomedical implants. 3D printed implants with proper structural design can not only eliminate the stress shielding effect but also improve in vivo biocompatibility and functionality. By combining medical images derived from technologies such as X-ray scanning, CT, MRI, or ultrasonic scanning, 3D printing can be used to create patient-specific implants with almost the same anatomical structures as the injured tissues. Numerous clinical trials have already been conducted with customized implants. However, the limited availability of raw materials for printing and a lack of guidance from related regulations or laws may impede the development of 3D printing in medical implants. This review provides information on the current state of 3D printing techniques in orthopedic implant applications. The current challenges and future perspectives are also included.

Computer-assisted preoperative planning of bone fracture fixation surgery: A state-of-the-art review

Background: Bone fracture fixation surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in the orthopedic field. However, fracture healing complications occur frequently, and the choice of the most optimal surgical approach often remains challenging. In the last years, computational tools have been developed with the aim to assist preoperative planning procedures of bone fracture fixation surgery.

Objectives: The aims of this review are 1) to provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in computer-assisted preoperative planning of bone fracture fixation surgery, 2) to assess the clinical feasibility of the existing virtual planning approaches, and 3) to assess their clinical efficacy in terms of clinical outcomes as compared to conventional planning methods.

Methods: A literature search was performed in the MEDLINE-PubMed, Ovid-EMBASE, Ovid-EMCARE, Web of Science, and Cochrane libraries to identify articles reporting on the clinical use of computer-assisted preoperative planning of bone fracture fixation.

Results: 79 articles were included to provide an overview of the state-of-the art in virtual planning. While patient-specific geometrical model construction, virtual bone fracture reduction, and virtual fixation planning are routinely applied in virtual planning, biomechanical analysis is rarely included in the planning framework. 21 of the included studies were used to assess the feasibility and efficacy of computer-assisted planning methods. The reported total mean planning duration ranged from 22 to 258 min in different studies. Computer-assisted planning resulted in reduced operation time (Standardized Mean Difference (SMD): -2.19; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): -2.87, -1.50), less blood loss (SMD: -1.99; 95% CI: -2.75, -1.24), decreased frequency of fluoroscopy (SMD: -2.18; 95% CI: -2.74, -1.61), shortened fracture healing times (SMD: -0.51; 95% CI: -0.97, -0.05) and less postoperative complications (Risk Ratio (RR): 0.64, 95% CI: 0.46, 0.90). No significant differences were found in hospitalization duration. Some studies reported improvements in reduction quality and functional outcomes but these results were not pooled for meta-analysis, since the reported outcome measures were too heterogeneous.

Conclusion: Current computer-assisted planning approaches are feasible to be used in clinical practice and have been shown to improve clinical outcomes. Including biomechanical analysis into the framework has the potential to further improve clinical outcome.

Reconstruction of maxillofacial bone defects using patient-specific long-lasting titanium implants

The objective of this retrospective study is to verify the effectiveness and safety of patient-specific titanium implants on maxillofacial bones, with a long-term follow-up. Total 16 patients with various maxillofacial defects underwent reconstruction using patient-specific titanium implants. Titanium implants, manufactured by electron beam melting, selective laser sintering, or milling, were inserted into the maxilla, mandible, or zygoma. Long-term follow‐up (36.7 ± 20.1 months) was conducted after the surgery. Bone fusion of the titanium implant body, postoperative infection, implant malunion, functional results, patient satisfaction, subsidence, osteolysis around the implants, and complications were recorded and analyzed at the last follow-up. Of the 28 implants, only one failed to unite with the bone; therefore, revision surgery was performed. No osteolysis or subsidence around the titanium implants nor adverse events were observed; the mean VAS score for satisfaction was 9. All patients enrolled in this trial were esthetically and functionally satisfied with their surgical results, and fixation failure and esthetic dissatisfaction complications were well resolved. Patient-specific titanium showed satisfactory outcomes when used to treat various oral and maxillofacial defects. A 3D printed titanium implant can be effectively used in the reconstruction of the zygoma and mandible instead of autogenous bone without donor site morbidity.

Mandibular Fractures: Diagnosis and Management

Accurate evaluation, diagnosis, and management of mandibular fractures is essential to effectively restore an individual's facial esthetics and function. Understanding of surgical anatomy, fracture fixation principles, and the nuances of specific fractures with respect to various patient populations can aid in adequately avoiding complications such as malocclusion, non-union, paresthesia, and revision procedures. This article reviews comprehensive mandibular fracture assessment, mandibular surgical anatomy, fracture fixation principles, management considerations, and commonly encountered complications. In addition, this article reviews emerging literature examining 3-dimensional printing and intraoperative imaging.

Procedure Increasing the Accuracy of Modelling and the Manufacturing of Surgical Templates with the Use of 3D Printing Techniques, Applied in Planning the Procedures of Reconstruction of the Mandible

The application of anatomical models and surgical templates in maxillofacial surgery allows, among other benefits, the increase of precision and the shortening of the operation time. Insufficiently precise anastomosis of the broken parts of the mandible may adversely affect the functioning of this organ. Applying the modern mechanical engineering methods, including computer-aided design methods (CAD), reverse engineering (RE), and rapid prototyping (RP), a procedure used to shorten the data processing time and increase the accuracy of modelling anatomical structures and the surgical templates with the use of 3D printing techniques was developed. The basis for developing and testing this procedure was the medical imaging data DICOM of patients treated at the Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic of the Fryderyk Chopin Provincial Clinical Hospital in Rzeszów. The patients were operated on because of malignant tumours of the floor of the oral cavity and the necrosis of the mandibular corpus, requiring an extensive resection of the soft tissues and resection of the mandible. Familiarity with and the implementation of the developed procedure allowed doctors to plan the operation precisely and prepare the surgical templates and tools in terms of the expected accuracy of the procedures. The models obtained based on this procedure shortened the operation time and increased the accuracy of performance, which accelerated the patient’s rehabilitation in the further course of events.

Reconstruction of bilateral ramus-condyle unit defect using custom titanium prosthesis with preservation of both condyles

BACKGROUND

Novel technologies for management and reconstruction of complex bony defects regarding both function and facial appearance are interestingly used in maxillofacial surgery. In the current study, we demonstrated reconstruction of a bilateral ramus-condyle unit (RCU) defect while preserving both condyles by a novel designed titanium prosthesis using virtual surgical planning (VSP), computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), and Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technologies.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A 3D customized titanium prosthesis was designed for a 49 -year-old patient with bilateral mandibular aggressive central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) according to mandibular normal anatomy and structure while preserving bilateral intact condyles. Finite element study was performed to investigate the effects of new design strength and the stress shielding phenomenon. The design of macro-pores inside the body of prosthesis allowed it to act as a scaffold for bone tissue engineering under load bearing conditions.

RESULTS

Analysis of the strength and stress shielding phenomenon demonstrated favorable outcomes regarding the novel design. For instance, there was no stress shielding in any of the preserved condyles with regard to the size and distribution of stresses. Also, the stress distribution around the pores showed that these pores had no effect on the strength of the prosthesis. Thirty month follow-ups after reconstruction of bilateral RCU defect showed normal jaw function with a favorable facial appearance and mandibular contour.

CONCLUSION

We design a novel patient-specific prosthesis with desirable biomechanical features for reconstruction of bilateral RCU defect after resection of the benign tumor with preservation of bilateral intact condyles.

Regenerative Medicine Technologies to Treat Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Defects

Additive manufacturing (AM) is the automated production of three-dimensional (3D) structures through successive layer-by-layer deposition of materials directed by computer-aided-design (CAD) software. While current clinical procedures that aim to reconstruct hard and soft tissue defects resulting from periodontal disease, congenital or acquired pathology, and maxillofacial trauma often utilize mass-produced biomaterials created for a variety of surgical indications, AM represents a paradigm shift in manufacturing at the individual patient level. Computer-aided systems employ algorithms to design customized, image-based scaffolds with high external shape complexity and spatial patterning of internal architecture guided by topology optimization. 3D bioprinting and surface modification techniques further enhance scaffold functionalization and osteogenic potential through the incorporation of viable cells, bioactive molecules, biomimetic materials and vectors for transgene expression within the layered architecture. These computational design features enable fabrication of tissue engineering constructs with highly tailored mechanical, structural, and biochemical properties for bone. This review examines key properties of scaffold design, bioresorbable bone scaffolds produced by AM processes, and clinical applications of these regenerative technologies. AM is transforming the field of personalized dental medicine and has great potential to improve regenerative outcomes in patient care.

Additive Manufacturing of Material Scaffolds for Bone Regeneration: Toward Application in the Clinics

Additive manufacturing (AM) allows the fabrication of customized bone scaffolds in terms of shape, pore size, material type and mechanical properties. Combined with the possibility to obtain a precise 3D image of the bone defects using computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, it is now possible to manufacture implants for patient-specific bone regeneration. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art of the different materials and AM techniques used for the fabrication of 3D-printed scaffolds in the field of bone tissue engineering. Their advantages and drawbacks are highlighted. For materials, specific criteria, were extracted from a literature study: biomimetism to native bone, mechanical properties, biodegradability, ability to be imaged (implantation and follow-up period), histological performances and sterilization process. AM techniques can be classified in three major categories: extrusion-based, powder-based and liquid-base. Their price, ease of use and space requirement are analyzed. Different combinations of materials/AM techniques appear to be the most relevant depending on the targeted clinical applications (implantation site, presence of mechanical constraints, temporary or permanent implant). Finally, some barriers impeding the translation to human clinics are identified, notably the sterilization process.

Utilization of Virtual Surgical Planning for Surgical Splint-Assisted Comminuted Maxillomandibular Fracture Reduction and/or Fixation

Study Design

This article was a technical note.

Objective

To demonstrate the utilization of virtual surgical planning for surgical splint (VSPSS) fabrication. The VSPSS was used as an intraoperative assisting and guiding tool for reduction and/or fixation of treatment of comminuted maxillomandibular fractures.

Methods

The presented technical note showed the fabrication process that began with data acquisition and presurgical planning using virtual surgical planning (VSP). The VSPSS was designed and fabricated after the fractures were reduced digitally in VSP. In the operating room, the VSPSS was seated to guide reduction and/or allow satisfactory fixation in three different situations.

Results

Postoperative radiographs showed an acceptable reduction of the fractures. All patients had stable and repeatable occlusion postoperatively.

Conclusions

The VSPSS is a feasible tool for surgeons to assist in the comminuted maxillomandibular fracture management, decrease operating time, and improve fracture stability.

Open Reduction and Internal Fixation Strategy For Treatment of Comminuted Mandibular Fracture

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to evaluate the treatment strategy of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for comminuted mandibular fracture (CMF).

METHODS

Clinical studies about CMF were collected. Detailed information was extracted, and data were analyzed and merged from included articles.

RESULTS

Twelve studies, including 338 patients with CMF, were reported. A total of 256 patients receive ORIF among these 338 patients, and exhibited followed characteristics: ORIF usually were performed several days after injury; the extraoral approach for ORIF was used for 103 patients among 205 patients who received ORIF with definite information about surgical approach; titanium mesh, or reconstruction plate, combined with mini-plates was used in 17 and 194 patients, respectively; intermaxillary fixation (IMF) usually persisted about 1 to 3 weeks after ORIF; most patients exhibited satisfactory effect without serious complications, and the complication rate varied from 0 to 42%.

CONCLUSIONS

ORIF strategy for treatment of CMF including: ORIF was a priority choice for CMF. ORIF usually was performed at several days after injury. Reconstruction plate, or titanium mesh, combined with mini-plates was recommended for ORIF surgery. After ORIF, IMF usually was recommended for about 1 to 3 weeks.

In Vitro Mechanical and Biological Properties of 3D Printed Polymer Composite and β-Tricalcium Phosphate Scaffold on Human Dental Pulp Stem Cells

3D printed biomaterials have been extensively investigated and developed in the field of bone regeneration related to clinical issues. However, specific applications of 3D printed biomaterials in different dental areas have seldom been reported. In this study, we aimed to and successfully fabricated 3D poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid)/β-tricalcium phosphate (3D-PLGA/TCP) and 3D β-tricalcium phosphate (3D-TCP) scaffolds using two relatively distinct 3D printing (3DP) technologies. Conjunctively, we compared and investigated mechanical and biological responses on human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs). Physicochemical properties of the scaffolds, including pore structure, chemical elements, and compression modulus, were characterized. hDPSCs were cultured on scaffolds for subsequent investigations of biocompatibility and osteoconductivity. Our findings indicate that 3D printed PLGA/TCP and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) scaffolds possessed a highly interconnected and porous structure. 3D-TCP scaffolds exhibited better compressive strength than 3D-PLGA/TCP scaffolds, while the 3D-PLGA/TCP scaffolds revealed a flexible mechanical performance. The introduction of 3D structure and β-TCP components increased the adhesion and proliferation of hDPSCs and promoted osteogenic differentiation. In conclusion, 3D-PLGA/TCP and 3D-TCP scaffolds, with the incorporation of hDPSCs as a personalized restoration approach, has a prospective potential to repair minor and critical bone defects in oral and maxillofacial surgery, respectively.

Application of three-dimensional reconstruction and printing as an elective course for undergraduate medical students: an exploratory trial

BACKGROUND

Medical three-dimensional (3D) digital reconstruction and printing have become common tools in medicine, but few undergraduate medical students understand its whole process and teaching and clinical application. Therefore, we designed an elective course of 3D reconstruction and printing for students and studied its significance and practicability.

METHODS

Thirty undergraduate medical students in their second-year of study volunteered to participate in the course. The course started with three lessons on the theory of 3D digital reconstruction and printing in medicine. The students were then randomly divided into ten groups. Each group randomly selected its own original data set, which could contain a series of 2D images including sectional anatomical images, histological images, CT and MRI. Amira software was used to segment the structures of interest, to 3D reconstruct them and to smooth and simplify the models. These models were 3D printed and post-processed. Finally, the 3D digital and printed models were scored, and the students produced brief reports of their work and knowledge acquisition and filled out an anonymous questionnaire about their study perceptions.

RESULTS

All the students finished this course. The average score of the 30 students was 83.1 ± 2.7. This course stimulated the students' learning interest and satisfied them. It was helpful for undergraduate students to understand anatomical structures and their spatial relationship more deeply. Students understood the whole process of 3D reconstruction and printing and its teaching and clinical applications through this course.

CONCLUSION

It is significant and necessary to develop this course for undergraduate medical students.

In-House Manufacture of Sterilizable, Scaled, Patient-Specific 3D-Printed Models for Rhinoplasty

BACKGROUND

Rhinoplasty relies on clear patient communication and precise execution of a three-dimensional (3D) plan to achieve optimal results. As 3D imaging and printing continue to grow in popularity within the medical field, rhinoplasty surgeons have begun to leverage these resources as an aid to preoperative planning, patient communication, and the technical performance of this challenging operation.

OBJECTIVES

Utilizing departmentally available resources and open-access 3D imaging platforms, we have developed an affordable, reproducible protocol for rapid in-house virtual surgical planning (VSP) and subsequent manufacture of 3D-printed rhinoplasty models.

METHODS

Preoperative 3D photographic images underwent virtual rhinoplasty using a freely available 3D imaging and sculpting program (BlenderTM [Version 2.78, Amsterdam, The Netherlands]). Once the ideal postoperative result was digitally achieved, scaled, sterilizable, and patient-specific 3D models of the preoperative and ideal postoperative result were manufactured in-house using a departmentally owned 3D printer.

RESULTS

3D-printed models have successfully been manufactured and employed for 12 patients undergoing rhinoplasty. The average time to prepare a set of pre- and postoperative models was 3 hours, while the printing process required 18 to 24 hours per model. Each set of surgical models can be manufactured at a total materials cost of approximately $5.00.

CONCLUSIONS

We describe an affordable means to construct sterilizable, scaled, patient-specific 3D-printed models for rhinoplasty. This technique may become of increasing interest to academic and cosmetic centers as hardware costs of 3D printers continue to fall.

Correlation Between Conditional Approval and Customized Bone Implant Devices

This report aims to summarize key concerns regarding customized devices and conditional approval during the premarket evaluation of bone implants, and to explore the correlation between them. Based on the experience of approval of the first domestic custom-designed bone implant, we consider the process of gaining conditional approval for urgently-needed medical devices and medical devices for rare diseases, as well as the guidance available for clinical investigation. We also streamlined the scientifically administrative concept of this unique device, from the design and development of premarket technical evaluation to continuous post-market study. The present study found that those two aspects have certain connections, but they are not directly correlated to each other. In contrast to the USA, Canada, Australia and the EU, where regulations and guidelines have been established for the use of customized devices, in this regard, China is still it its infancy. Thus, there is considerable potential for China to develop and perfect the policies relating to customized devices and to develop relevant strategies to ensure their efficacy with the aid of conditional approval. Appropriate scientific conditional approval for mass production of individualized anatomy-matching bone implants could become a valuable approach for precision medicine.

Medical three-dimensional (3D) printing has expanded dramatically over the past three decades with growth in both facility adoption and the variety of medical applications. Consideration for each step required to create accurate 3D printed models from medical imaging data impacts patient care and management. In this paper, a writing group representing the Radiological Society of North America Special Interest Group on 3D Printing (SIG) provides recommendations that have been vetted and voted on by the SIG active membership. This body of work includes appropriate clinical use of anatomic models 3D printed for diagnostic use in the care of patients with specific medical conditions. The recommendations provide guidance for approaches and tools in medical 3D printing, from image acquisition, segmentation of the desired anatomy intended for 3D printing, creation of a 3D-printable model, and post-processing of 3D printed anatomic models for patient care.

Treatment of Extensively Comminuted Mandibular Fracture with the Aid of a Condylar Positioning Device

We describe a case of extensively comminuted mandibular fracture that extends bilaterally to the angle of mandible successfully treated with the use of condylar positioning device (CPD). This simple, yet effective, technique that almost exclusively described in orthognathic surgery is useful when advance surgical techniques such as pre- or intraoperative landmark identification may not be readily available. CPD technique optimizes the manual manipulations of the comminuted distal segments during fracture reduction and internal fixation. At the same time, it allows greater control of the proximal segments to avoid further surgical complication.
