Intrinsic timescales of sensory integration for motion perception

A subject-specific process of perceptual decision making is of importance to how the brain translates its interpretation of sensory information into behavior. In particular, a number of studies reported substantial variation across the observers’ decision behavior, which may reflect different profiles of evidence accumulated by each individual. However, a detailed profile of perceptual integration has not yet been verified from human behavioral data. To address the issue, we precisely measured the time course of sensory integration, as the “sensory integration kernel” of subjects, using a coherence-varying motion discrimination task. We found that each subject has a distinct profile of sensory integration. We observed that kernel size (maximum sensory integration interval) is consistent within subjects, independent of external stimuli conditions. The observed kernel could accurately predict subject-specific perceptual behaviors and explain the inter-individual variation of observed behaviors. Surprisingly, the performance of most subjects did not improve in proportion to increased duration of the stimulus, but was maximized when the stimulus duration matched their kernel size. We also found that the observed kernel size was strongly correlated with the subject-specific perceptual characteristics for illusory motion. Our results suggest that perceptual decisions arise from intrinsic decision dynamics, and on individual timescales of sensory integration.

Differential brain activity states during the perception and nonperception of illusory motion as revealed by magnetoencephalography

We studied visual perception using an annular random-dot motion stimulus called the racetrack. We recorded neural activity using magnetoencephalography while subjects viewed variants of this stimulus that contained no inherent motion or various degrees of embedded motion. Subjects reported seeing rotary motion during viewing of all stimuli. We found that, in the absence of any motion signals, patterns of brain activity differed between states of motion perception and nonperception. Furthermore, when subjects perceived motion, activity states within the brain did not differ across stimuli of different amounts of embedded motion. In contrast, we found that during periods of nonperception brain-activity states varied with the amount of motion signal embedded in the stimulus. Taken together, these results suggest that during perception the brain may lock into a stable state in which lower-level signals are suppressed.

Performance characterization of Watson Ahumada motion detector using random dot rotary motion stimuli

The performance of Watson & Ahumada's model of human visual motion sensing is compared against human psychophysical performance. The stimulus consists of random dots undergoing rotary motion, displayed in a circular annulus. The model matches psychophysical observer performance with respect to most parameters. It is able to replicate some key psychophysical findings such as invariance of observer performance to dot density in the display, and decrease of observer performance with frame duration of the display.

Associated with the concept of rotary motion is the notion of a center about which rotation occurs. One might think that for accurate estimation of rotary motion in the display, this center must be accurately known. A simple vector analysis reveals that this need not be the case. Numerical simulations confirm this result, and may explain the position invariance of MST(d) cells. Position invariance is the experimental finding that rotary motion sensitive cells are insensitive to where in their receptive field rotation occurs.

When all the dots in the display are randomly drawn from a uniform distribution, illusory rotary motion is perceived. This case was investigated by Rose & Blake previously, who termed the illusory rotary motion the omega effect. Two important experimental findings are reported concerning this effect. First, although the display of random dots evokes perception of rotary motion, the direction of motion perceived does not depend on what dot pattern is shown. Second, the time interval between spontaneous flips in perceived direction is lognormally distributed (mode≈2 s). These findings suggest the omega effect fits in the category of a typical bistable illusion, and therefore the processes that give rise to this illusion may be the same processes that underlie much of other bistable phenomenon.

Illusory motion in Enigma: a psychophysical investigation

Experiments to determine the optimum conditions for perceiving illusory motion in Engima-like patterns have also demonstrated that the illusory motion is not the result of unintended motion of the image on the retina due to microsaccades or accommodative changes in the lens of the eye but instead has a cortical origin. The perceived illusory activity is believed to be a consequence of neural signals emanating from high-contrast bars and edges in the image that emit randomly fluctuating signals, as expected from spiking cortical neurons. These fluctuations may induce illusory motion in the channels by a mechanism similar to that responsible for the Omega effect, in which sequences of random patterns of black dots presented in an annular channel produce the perception of illusory rotation of these dots within the annulus.

Visual discrimination of direction changes based upon two types of angular motion

We address the question of how the visual system analyses changes in direction. Using plaid stimuli, we define type O direction changes which entail a change in the orientations of the plaid components, and type V direction changes in which the orientations of the components remain constant, relative to the observer but their relative speeds change. Lower thresholds for discriminating type O and type V direction changes were compared. Type O thresholds for clockwise/anticlockwise direction change were very low (0.2-0.5 degree), were resistant to directional noise, and showed a low-pass relationship with drift velocity. Type V thresholds on the other hand were higher (1-5 degrees), and exhibited a bandpass relationship with drift velocity. Type O direction changes gave low thresholds at short inter-stimulus intervals (ISI) (< 160 ms) and higher thresholds (successive orientation discrimination) at long ISI (240 ms-12.8 s). Type V thresholds, on the other hand, exhibited no short-range process and performance at short ISI, was no better than for successive direction discrimination at long ISI. A two-stage rotary motion model is sufficient to explain the discrimination of type O direction changes and results rule out a model based on velocity discrimination. For type V direction changes, a two-stage mechanism is insufficient and results are consistent with a minimum of three computational stages.
