Resonant shape oscillations and decay of a soliton in a periodically inhomogeneous nonlinear optical fiber

Two-dimensional localized chaotic patterns in parametrically driven systems

We study two-dimensional localized patterns in weakly dissipative systems that are driven parametrically. As a generic model for many different physical situations we use a generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation that contains parametric forcing, damping, and spatial coupling. The latter allows for the existence of localized pattern states, where a finite-amplitude uniform state coexists with an inhomogeneous one. In particular, we study numerically two-dimensional patterns. Increasing the driving forces, first the localized pattern dynamics is regular, becomes chaotic for stronger driving, and finally extends in area to cover almost the whole system. In parallel, the spatial structure of the localized states becomes more and more irregular, ending up as a full spatiotemporal chaotic structure.

Chaotic solitons in the quadratic-cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation under nonlinearity management

We analyze the response of rational and regular (hyperbolic-secant) soliton solutions of an extended nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) which includes an additional self-defocusing quadratic term, to periodic modulations of the coefficient in front of this term. Using the variational approximation (VA) with rational and hyperbolic trial functions, we transform this NLSE into Hamiltonian dynamical systems which give rise to chaotic solutions. The presence of chaos in the variational solutions is corroborated by calculating their power spectra and the correlation dimension of the Poincaré maps. This chaotic behavior (predicted by the VA) is not observed in the direct numerical solutions of the NLSE when rational initial conditions are used. The solitary-wave solutions generated by these initial conditions gradually decay under the action of the nonlinearity management. On the contrary, the solutions of the NLSE with exponentially localized initial conditions are robust solitary-waves with oscillations consistent with a chaotic or a complex quasiperiodic behavior.

Stabilization and destabilization of second-order solitons against perturbations in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We consider splitting and stabilization of second-order solitons (2-soliton breathers) in a model based on the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, which includes a small quintic term, and weak resonant nonlinearity management (NLM), i.e., time-periodic modulation of the cubic coefficient, at the frequency close to that of shape oscillations of the 2-soliton. The model applies to the light propagation in media with cubic-quintic optical nonlinearities and periodic alternation of linear loss and gain and to Bose-Einstein condensates, with the self-focusing quintic term accounting for the weak deviation of the dynamics from one dimensionality, while the NLM can be induced by means of the Feshbach resonance. We propose an explanation to the effect of the resonant splitting of the 2-soliton under the action of the NLM. Then, using systematic simulations and an analytical approach, we conclude that the weak quintic nonlinearity with the self-focusing sign stabilizes the 2-soliton, while the self-defocusing quintic nonlinearity accelerates its splitting. It is also shown that the quintic term with the self-defocusing/focusing sign makes the resonant response of the 2-soliton to the NLM essentially broader in terms of the frequency.

Light propagation through a nonlinear defect: symmetry breaking and controlled soliton emission

We investigate the emission of solitons at a nonlinear longitudinal defect. We discuss the basic physics and introduce a novel approach to achieve complete nonlinear control of the process. Theoretical results are confirmed by numerical simulations.

Governing soliton splitting in one-dimensional lattices

We investigate discrete light dynamics in the presence of a longitudinal defect of arbitrary extension, amplitude and position in a nonlinear waveguide array. We model and discuss the physics of the soliton-defect interaction, showing how to gain complete control over the system outcome for soliton-based data processing. We propose all-optical management in dye-doped liquid crystals.

Standard and embedded solitons in nematic optical fibers

A model for a non-Kerr cylindrical nematic fiber is presented. We use the multiple scales method to show the possibility of constructing different kinds of wave packets of transverse magnetic modes propagating through the fiber. This procedure allows us to generate different hierarchies of nonlinear partial differential equations which describe the propagation of optical pulses along the fiber. We go beyond the usual weakly nonlinear limit of a Kerr medium and derive a complex modified Korteweg-de Vries equation (CM KdV) which governs the dynamics for the amplitude of the wave packet. In this derivation the dispersion, self-focussing, and diffraction in the nematic fiber are taken into account. It is shown that this CM KdV equation has two-parameter families of bright and dark complex solitons. We show analytically that under certain conditions, the bright solitons are actually double-embedded solitons. We explain why these solitons do not radiate at all, even though their wave numbers are contained in the linear spectrum of the system. We study (numerically and analytically) the stability of these solitons. Our results show that these embedded solitons are stable solutions, which is an interesting property since in most systems the embedded solitons are weakly unstable solutions. Finally, we close the paper by making comments on the advantages as well as the limitations of our approach, and on further generalizations of the model and method presented.

Disintegration of a soliton in a dispersion-managed optical communication line with random parameters

The propagation of dispersion-managed solitons in optical fiber links with a random dispersion map has been studied. Two types of randomness are considered:random dispersion magnitudes and random lengths of the spans. By numerical simulations, disintegration of a soliton propagating in such an optical communication line is shown to occur. It is observed that the stability of the soliton propagation is affected more by modulations of the dispersion magnitudes of the spans than by modulations of the span lengths. Results of numerical simulations of the soliton breakup distance confirm theoretical predictions in the averaged dynamics limit.

Jitter suppression by guiding filters in combination with dispersion management

Enhancement of jitter suppression of a soliton by combination of fixed-frequency filters with periodic dispersion compensation is predicted in an analytical form by means of the Fokker-Planck equation for the soliton's random walk. The result depends on the dispersion-compensation period but not on the ratio of the dispersions. Another result is presented that can help one to understand jitter suppression by dispersion compensation without filters, which was observed in recent experiments.
