Dynamics of coupling functions in globally coupled maps: size, periodicity, and stability of clusters

Coevolutionary Dynamics with Global Fields

We investigate the effects of external and autonomous global interaction fields on an adaptive network of social agents with an opinion formation dynamics based on a simple imitation rule. We study the competition between global fields and adaptive rewiring on the space of parameters of the system. The model represents an adaptive society subject to global mass media such as a directed opinion influence or feedback of endogenous cultural trends. We show that, in both situations, global mass media contribute to consensus and to prevent the fragmentation of the social network induced by the coevolutionary dynamics. We present a discussion of these results in the context of dynamical systems and opinion formation dynamics.

Chimeras and clusters in networks of hyperbolic chaotic oscillators

We show that chimera states, where differentiated subsets of synchronized and desynchronized dynamical elements coexist, can emerge in networks of hyperbolic chaotic oscillators subject to global interactions. As local dynamics we employ Lozi maps, which possess hyperbolic chaotic attractors. We consider a globally coupled system of these maps and use two statistical quantities to describe its collective behavior: the average fraction of elements belonging to clusters and the average standard deviation of state variables. Chimera states, clusters, complete synchronization, and incoherence are thus characterized on the space of parameters of the system. We find that chimera states are related to the formation of clusters in the system. In addition, we show that chimera states arise for a sufficiently long range of interactions in nonlocally coupled networks of these maps. Our results reveal that, under some circumstances, hyperbolicity does not impede the formation of chimera states in networks of coupled chaotic systems, as it had been previously hypothesized.

Generalized synchronization of chaos in autonomous systems

We extend the concept of generalized synchronization of chaos, a phenomenon that occurs in driven dynamical systems, to the context of autonomous spatiotemporal systems. It means a situation where the chaotic state variables in an autonomous system can be synchronized to each other, but not to a coupling function defined from them. The form of the coupling function is not crucial; it may not depend on all the state variables. Nor does it need to be active for all times for achieving generalized synchronization. The procedure is based on an analogy between a response map subject to an external drive acting with a probability p and an autonomous system of coupled maps where a global interaction between the maps takes place with this same probability. It is shown that, under some circumstances, the conditions for stability of generalized synchronized states are equivalent in both types of systems. Our results reveal the existence of similar minimal conditions for the emergence of generalized synchronization of chaos in driven and in autonomous spatiotemporal systems.

Steady-state stabilization due to random delays in maps with self-feedback loops and in globally delayed-coupled maps

We study the stability of the fixed-point solution of an array of mutually coupled logistic maps, focusing on the influence of the delay times, , of the interaction between the and maps. Two of us recently reported [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 134102 (2005)] that if are random enough, the array synchronizes in a spatially homogeneous steady state. Here we study this behavior by comparing the dynamics of a map of an array of delayed-coupled maps with the dynamics of a map with self-feedback delayed loops. If is sufficiently large, the dynamics of a map of the array is similar to the dynamics of a map with self-feedback loops with the same delay times. Several delayed loops stabilize the fixed point, when the delays are not the same; however, the distribution of delays plays a key role; if the delays are all odd a periodic orbit (and not the fixed point) is stabilized. We present a linear stability analysis and apply some mathematical theorems that explain the numerical results.

Spatial mechanisms for coexistence of species sharing a common natural enemy

We examine the conditions under which spatial structure can mediate coexistence of apparent competitors. We use a spatially explicit, host-parasitoid metapopulation model incorporating local dynamics of Nicholson-Bailey type and global dispersal. Depending on the model parameters, the resulting system displays a plethora of asynchronous dynamical behaviors for which permanent or transient coexistence is observed. We identify a number of spatially mediated tradeoffs which apparent competitors can utilize and demonstrate that the dynamics of spatial coexistence can typically be understood from consideration of two and three patch systems. The phase relationships of species abundances are different for our model than for some other mechanisms of spatial coexistence. We discuss the implications of our findings relative to issues of community organization and biological conservation.

Chaotic cluster itinerancy and hierarchical cluster trees in electrochemical experiments

Experiments on an array of 64 globally coupled chaotic electrochemical oscillators were carried out. The array is heterogeneous due to small variations in the properties of the electrodes and there is also a small amount of noise. Over some ranges of the coupling parameter, dynamical clustering was observed. The precision-dependent cluster configuration is analyzed using hierarchical cluster trees. The cluster configurations varied with time: spontaneous changes of number of clusters and their configurations were detected. Simple transitions occurred with the switch of a single element or groups of elements. During more complicated transitions subclusters were exchanged among clusters but original cluster configurations were revisited. At weaker coupling the system itinerated among lower-dimensional quasistationary chaotic two-cluster states and higher-dimensional states with many clusters. In this region the transitions showed characteristics of on-off intermittency.
