Annihilation of nematic point defects: postcollision scenarios

Liquid crystals in micron-scale droplets, shells and fibers

The extraordinary responsiveness and large diversity of self-assembled structures of liquid crystals are well documented and they have been extensively used in devices like displays. For long, this application route strongly influenced academic research, which frequently focused on the performance of liquid crystals in display-like geometries, typically between flat, rigid substrates of glass or similar solids. Today a new trend is clearly visible, where liquid crystals confined within curved, often soft and flexible, interfaces are in focus. Innovation in microfluidic technology has opened for high-throughput production of liquid crystal droplets or shells with exquisite monodispersity, and modern characterization methods allow detailed analysis of complex director arrangements. The introduction of electrospinning in liquid crystal research has enabled encapsulation in optically transparent polymeric cylinders with very small radius, allowing studies of confinement effects that were not easily accessible before. It also opened the prospect of functionalizing textile fibers with liquid crystals in the core, triggering activities that target wearable devices with true textile form factor for seamless integration in clothing. Together, these developments have brought issues center stage that might previously have been considered esoteric, like the interaction of topological defects on spherical surfaces, saddle-splay curvature-induced spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, or the non-trivial shape changes of curved liquid crystal elastomers with non-uniform director fields that undergo a phase transition to an isotropic state. The new research thrusts are motivated equally by the intriguing soft matter physics showcased by liquid crystals in these unconventional geometries, and by the many novel application opportunities that arise when we can reproducibly manufacture these systems on a commercial scale. This review attempts to summarize the current understanding of liquid crystals in spherical and cylindrical geometry, the state of the art of producing such samples, as well as the perspectives for innovative applications that have been put forward.

Nonsingular defects and self-assembly of colloidal particles in cholesteric liquid crystals

Cholesteric liquid crystals can potentially provide a means for tunable self-organization of colloidal particles. However, the structures of particle-induced defects and the ensuing elasticity-mediated colloidal interactions in these media remain much less explored and understood as compared to their nematic liquid crystal counterparts. Here we demonstrate how colloidal microspheres of varying diameter relative to the helicoidal pitch can induce dipolelike director field configurations in cholesteric liquid crystals, where these particles are accompanied by point defects and a diverse variety of nonsingular line defects forming closed loops. Using laser tweezers and nonlinear optical microscopy, we characterize the ensuing medium-mediated elastic interactions and three-dimensional colloidal assemblies. Experimental findings show a good agreement with numerical modeling based on minimization of the Landau-de Gennes free energy and promise both practical applications in the realization of colloidal composite materials and a means of controlling nonsingular topological defects that attract a great deal of fundamental interest.

Experimental Insights into the Nanostructure of the Cores of Topological Defects in Liquid Crystals

The nanoscopic structure of the cores of topological defects in anisotropic condensed matter is an unresolved issue, although a number of theoretical predictions have been reported. In the experimental study reported in this Letter, we template the assembly of amphiphilic molecules from the cores of defects in liquid crystals and thereby provide the first experimental evidence that the cores of singular defects that appear optically to be points (with strength m=+1) are nanometer-sized closed-loop, disclination lines. We also analyze this result in the context of a model that describes the influence of amphiphilic assemblies on the free energy and stability of the defects. Overall, our experimental results and theoretical predictions reveal that the cores of defects with opposite strengths (e.g., m=+1 vs m=-1) differ in ways that profoundly influence processes of molecular self-assembly.

Symmetry breaking and structure of a mixture of nematic liquid crystals and anisotropic nanoparticles

Orientational ordering of a homogeneous mixture of uniaxial liquid crystalline (LC) molecules and magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) is studied using the Lebwohl-Lasher lattice model. We consider cases where NPs tend to be oriented perpendicularly to LC molecules due to elastic forces. We study domain-type configurations of ensembles, which are quenched from the isotropic phase. We show that for large enough concentrations of NPs the long range uniaxial nematic ordering is replaced by short range order exhibiting strong biaxiality. This suggests that the impact of NPs on orientational ordering of LCs for appropriate concentrations of NPs is reminiscent to the influence of quenched random fields which locally enforce a biaxial ordering.

Point and ring defects in nematics under capillary confinement

The textures exhibited by nematic liquid crystals confined to cylindrical capillaries under homeotropic anchoring have been studied for nearly thirty years. One of the reasons behind this maintained interest is that the processing of many high-performance fibers including carbon fibers and spider silks involves these textures. Three of these textures, the planar radial with line defect, the planar polar with two line defects (PPLD), and the escape radial (ER), are relatively well understood. A third one, the escape radial with point defects presents, however, some unresolved issues and recent studies have questioned the real nature and dimensionality of the defects involved in this texture. It seems that the defects are not in the form of points but rather in the form of closed lines or rings. This paper presents a detailed study on the connection between point and ring defects in a cylindrical cavity using three-dimensional simulations based on the continuum Landau-de Gennes theory. The results show that true point defects cannot exist in cylindrical cavities and that the merging of two ringlike defects may lead to two qualitatively different stable textures, namely, the ER and PPLD textures. The various results are in qualitative agreement with recent molecular dynamic studies and with theoretical predictions based on experimental observations. The predictions provide new insights on the structural connections between synthetic and biological superfibers.

Ringlike cores of cylindrically confined nematic point defects

Nematic liquid crystals confined in a cylindrical capillary and subjected to strong homeotropic anchoring conditions is a long-studied fundamental problem that uniquely incorporates nonlinearity, topological stability, defects, and texture physics. The observed and predicted textures that continue to be investigated include escape radial, radial with a line defect, planar polar with two line defects, and periodic array of point defects. This paper presents theory and multiscale simulations of global and fine scale textures of nematic point defects, based on the Landau-de Gennes tensor order parameter equations. The aim of this paper is to further investigate the ringlike nature of point defect cores and its importance on texture transformation mechanisms and stability. The paper shows that the ringlike cores can be oriented either along the cylinder axis or along the radial direction. Axial rings can partially expand but are constrained by the capillary sidewalls. Radial rings can deform into elliptical structures whose major axis is along the capillary axis. The transformation between several families of textures under capillary confinement as well as their stability is discussed in terms of defect ring distortions. A unified view of nematic textures found in the cylindrical cavities is provided.

Pretransitional effects near the smectic-A -smectic-C* phase transition of hydrophilic and hydrophobic aerosil networks dispersed in ferroelectric liquid crystals

A detailed x-ray scattering and high-resolution ac calorimetric study has been carried out near the smectic-A to chiral smectic-C phase transition of liquid-crystal compounds 4-(2-methyl butyl) phenyl 4-n-octylbiphenyl-4-carboxylate (CE8) and p-( n-decyloxy) benzylidene-p-amino-(2-methylbutyl) cinnamate (DOBAMBC) confined in hydrophilic and hydrophobic aerosil nanoparticle networks. The character of the transition, which is mean field near a tricritical point in bulk, is changed dramatically with an increase of aerosil-induced disorder. X-ray measurements revealed pretransitional behavior and compression of the smectic layers, phenomena that are strongly pronounced in high aerosil concentrations. A theoretical model that takes into account the interplay of relevant mechanisms is proposed to explain the observed phenomena. The effect of chirality on the interaction of liquid crystals with aerosils is discussed.

Annihilation of nematic point defects: pre-collision and post-collision evolution

The annihilation of the nematic hedgehog and anti-hedgehog within an infinite cylinder of radius R is studied. The semi-microscopic lattice-type model and Brownian molecular dynamics are used. We distinguish among the i) early pre-collision, ii) late pre-collision, iii) early post-collision, and iv) late post-collision stages. In the pre-collision stage our results agree qualitatively with the existing experimental observations and also continuum-type simulations. The core of each defect exhibits a ring-like structure, where the ring axis is set perpendicular to the cylinder symmetry axis. For xi(0)d/(2R) > 1 the interaction between defects is negligible, where xi(0)d describes the initial separation of defects. Consequently, the defects annihilate within the simulation time window for xi(0)d/(2R) < 1. For close enough defects their separation scales as xi(d) [see text] (t(c)- t)(0.4+/-0.1), where t(c) stands for the collision time. In elastically anisotropic medium the hedgehog is faster than the anti-hedgehog. In the early pre-collision stage the defects can be treated as point-like particles, possessing inherent core structure, that interact via the nematic director field. In the late pre-collision stage the cores reflect the interaction between defects. After the collision a charge-less ring structure is first formed. In the early post-collision stage the ring adopts an essentially untwisted circular structure of the radius xi(r). In the late post-collision stage we observe two qualitatively different scenarios. For mu = xi(r)/R < mu(c) approximately 0.25 the ring collapses leading to the escaped radial equilibrium structure. For mu > mu(c) the chargeless ring triggers the nucleation growth into the planar polar structure with line defects.

Dynamic interactions between nematic point defects in the spinning extrusion duct of spiders

Spider silk fibers have remarkable mechanical properties as a result of an ultraoptimized spinning process. Silk fibers are spun from a lyotropic nematic liquid crystalline anisotropic fluid phase which undergoes significant structural changes throughout the spinning pathway. In the silk extrusion duct, those structural changes are expected to be driven by elastic-mediated interactions between point defects. In this work, the interaction between two point defects of opposite topological charges located on the axis of a cylindrical cavity is studied using a tensor order parameter formalism. Distinct regimes leading to defect annihilation and structural transitions are described in detail. The driving force setting the defects into motion is also examined. The different results suggest that the tensorial approach is primordial in describing the complicated physics of the problem. The phenomenon described is important to the understanding of the process-induced structuring of silk fibers and to defect physics in a more general context.

Annihilation of edge dislocations in smectic-A liquid crystals

This paper presents a theoretical study of the annihilation of edge dislocations in the same smectic plane in a bulk smectic-A phase. We use a time-dependent Landau-Ginzburg approach where the smectic ordering is described by the complex order parameter psi( r--> ,t) =eta e(iphi) . This quantity allows both the degree of layering and the position of the layers to be monitored. We are able to follow both precollision and postcollision regimes, and distinguish different early and late behaviors within these regimes. The early precollision regime is driven by changes in the phi ( r--> ) configuration. The relative velocity of the defects is approximately inversely proportional to the interdefect separation distance. In the late precollision regime the symmetry changes within the cores of defects also become influential. Following the defect collision, in the early postcollision stage, bulk layer order is approached exponentially in time. At very late times, however, there seems to be a long-time power-law tail in the order parameter fluctuation relaxation.
