When gel and glass meet: a mechanism for multistep relaxation

Active interaction switching controls the dynamic heterogeneity of soft colloidal dispersions

We employ Reactive Dynamical Density Functional Theory (R-DDFT) and Reactive Brownian Dynamics (R-BD) simulations to investigate the dynamics of a suspension of active soft Gaussian colloids with binary interaction switching, i.e., a one-component colloidal system in which every particle stochastically switches at predefined rates between two interaction states with different mobility. Using R-DDFT we extend a theory previously developed to access the dynamics of inhomogeneous liquids [Archer et al., Phys. Rev. E: Stat., Nonlinear, Soft Matter Phys., 2007, 75, 040501] to study the influence of the switching activity on the self and distinct part of the Van Hove function in bulk solution, and determine the corresponding mean squared displacement of the switching particles. Our results demonstrate that, even though the average diffusion coefficient is not affected by the switching activity, it significantly modifies the non-equilibrium dynamics and diffusion coefficients of the individual particles, leading to a crossover from short to long times, with a regime for intermediate times showing anomalous diffusion. In addition, the self-part of the van Hove function has a Gaussian form at short and long times, but becomes non-Gaussian at intermediates ones, having a crossover between short and large displacements. The corresponding self-intermediate scattering function shows the two-step relaxation patters typically observed in soft materials with heterogeneous dynamics such as glasses and gels. We also introduce a phenomenological Continuous Time Random Walk (CTRW) theory to understand the heterogeneous diffusion of this system. R-DDFT results are in excellent agreement with R-BD simulations and the analytical predictions of CTRW theory, thus confirming that R-DDFT constitutes a powerful method to investigate not only the structure and phase behavior, but also the dynamical properties of non-equilibrium active switching colloidal suspensions.

Glass-liquid and glass-gel transitions of soft-shell particles

We study the structure and dynamics of colloidal particles with a spherical hard core and a thermo-responsive soft shell over the whole phase diagram by means of small-angle x-ray scattering and x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. By changing the effective volume fraction by temperature and particle concentration, liquid, repulsive glass. and attractive gel phases are observed. The dynamics slow down with increasing volume fraction in the liquid phase and reflect a Vogel-Fulcher-Tamann behavior known for fragile glass formers. We find a liquid-glass transition above 50 vol.% that is independent of the particles' concentration and temperature. In an overpacked state at effective volume fractions above 1, the dispersion does not show a liquid phase but undergoes a gel-glass transition at an effective volume fraction of 34 vol.%. At the same concentration, extrema of subdiffusive dynamics are found in the liquid phase at lower weight fractions. We interpret this as dynamic precursors of the glass-gel transition.

Waiting-time dependent non-equilibrium phase diagram of simple glass- and gel-forming liquids

Under numerous circumstances, many soft and hard materials are present in a puzzling wealth of non-equilibrium amorphous states, whose properties are not stationary and depend on preparation. They are often summarized in unconventional "phase diagrams" that exhibit new "phases" and/or "transitions" in which time, however, is an essential variable. This work proposes a solution to the problem of theoretically defining and predicting these non-equilibrium phases and their time-evolving phase diagrams, given the underlying molecular interactions. We demonstrate that these non-equilibrium phases and the corresponding non-stationary (i.e., aging) phase diagrams can indeed be defined and predicted using the kinetic perspective of a novel non-equilibrium statistical mechanical theory of irreversible processes. This is illustrated with the theoretical description of the transient process of dynamic arrest into non-equilibrium amorphous solid phases of an instantaneously quenched simple model fluid involving repulsive hard-sphere plus attractive square well pair interactions.

Connecting real glasses to mean-field models

We propose a novel model for a glass-forming liquid, which allows us to switch in a continuous manner from a standard three-dimensional liquid to a fully connected mean-field model. This is achieved by introducing k additional particle-particle interactions, which thus augments the effective number of neighbors of each particle. Our computer simulations of this system show that the structure of the liquid does not change with the introduction of these pseudo-neighbors and by means of analytical calculations, and we determine the structural properties related to these additional neighbors. We show that the relaxation dynamics of the system slows down very quickly with the increase in k and that the onset and the mode-coupling temperatures increase. The systems with high values of k follow the mode-coupling theory power law behavior for a larger temperature range compared to the ones with lower values of k. The dynamic susceptibility indicates that the dynamic heterogeneity decreases with the increase in k, whereas the non-Gaussian parameter is independent of it. Thus, we conclude that with the increase in the number of pseudo-neighbors, the system becomes more mean-field-like. By comparing our results with previous studies on mean-field-like systems, we come to the conclusion that the details of how the mean-field limit is approached are important since they can lead to different dynamical behavior in this limit.

Glassy Behavior of Sticky Spheres: What Lies beyond Experimental Timescales?

We use the swap Monte Carlo algorithm to analyze the glassy behavior of sticky spheres in equilibrium conditions at densities where conventional simulations and experiments fail to reach equilibrium, beyond predicted phase transitions and dynamic singularities. We demonstrate the existence of a unique ergodic region comprising all the distinct phases previously reported, except for a phase-separated region at strong adhesion. All structural and dynamic observables evolve gradually within this ergodic region, the physics evolving smoothly from well-known hard sphere glassy behavior at small adhesions and large densities, to a more complex glassy regime characterized by unusually broad distributions of relaxation timescales and length scales at large adhesions.

Active topological glass

The glass transition in soft matter systems is generally triggered by an increase in packing fraction or a decrease in temperature. It has been conjectured that the internal topology of the constituent particles, such as polymers, can cause glassiness too. However, the conjecture relies on immobilizing a fraction of the particles and is therefore difficult to fulfill experimentally. Here we show that in dense solutions of circular polymers containing (active) segments of increased mobility, the interplay of the activity and the topology of the polymers generates an unprecedented glassy state of matter. The active isotropic driving enhances mutual ring threading to the extent that the rings can relax only in a cooperative way, which dramatically increases relaxation times. Moreover, the observed phenomena feature similarities with the conformation and dynamics of the DNA fibre in living nuclei of higher eukaryotes.

Interference between the glass, gel, and gas-liquid transitions

Recent experiments and computer simulations have revealed intriguing phenomenological fingerprints of the interference between the ordinary equilibrium gas-liquid phase transition and the non-equilibrium glass and gel transitions. We thus now know, for example, that the liquid-gas spinodal line and the glass transition loci intersect at a finite temperature and density, that when the gel and the glass transitions meet, mechanisms for multistep relaxation emerge, and that the formation of gels exhibits puzzling latency effects. In this work we demonstrate that the kinetic perspective of the non-equilibrium self-consistent generalized Langevin equation (NE-SCGLE) theory of irreversible processes in liquids provides a unifying first-principles microscopic theoretical framework to describe these and other phenomena associated with spinodal decomposition, gelation, glass transition, and their combinations. The resulting scenario is in reality the competition between two kinetically limiting behaviors, associated with the two distinct dynamic arrest transitions in which the liquid-glass line is predicted to bifurcate at low densities, below its intersection with the spinodal line.

Multiscale relaxation in aging colloidal gels: From localized plastic events to system-spanning quakes

Relaxation of internal stresses through a cascade of microscopic restructuring events is the hallmark of many materials, ranging from amorphous solids like glasses and gels to geological structures subjected to a persistent external load. By means of photon correlation imaging, a recently developed technique that blends the powers of scattering and imaging, we provide a spatially and temporally resolved survey of the restructuring and aging processes that spontaneously occur in physical gels originating from an arrested phase separation. We show that the temporal dynamics is characterized by an intermittent sequence of spatially localized "microquakes" that eventually lead to global rearrangements occurring at a rate that scales with the gel age. Notably, these dramatic upheavals of the gel structure are heralded by a progressive acceleration of the microscopic gel dynamics that originates from recognizable active spots and then spreads at a large but finite speed through the gel. Within the "slack" phase between two of these "macroquakes," the fluctuations of the degree of temporal correlation obey a non-Gaussian statistics described by a generalized logistic distribution. The evidence we obtained bear consistent analogies with the stress relaxation processes taking place in earthquake sequences and with the intermittent restructuring of plastic crystals at the microscale.

Interplay between Caging and Bonding in Binary Concentrated Colloidal Suspensions

When a liquid becomes dynamically arrested, a gel, a repulsive glass, or an attractive glass state will form. Bonding and caging mechanisms decide their static structures and dynamic properties. To better understand their interplay, the competition between bonding and caging in a binary mixture of polystyrene core/poly( N-isopropylacrylamide) shell (CS) microgels and sulfonated polystyrene (PSS) particles is studied. CS microgels have short-range attraction above the volume phase transition temperature, whereas PSS species experiences relatively long-range electrostatic repulsion. Adding more PSS into the binary mixture will, of course, increase the total effective volume fraction but lead to different properties in gel or glass states. For instance, in gels, it increases the localization length and weakens the gel, whereas in glass, it decreases the localization length and strengthens the glass. This thus implies that the static and dynamic properties of gels are mainly controlled by bonding and those of both repulsive and attractive glasses are governed by caging. On the other hand, increasing the temperature will decrease the effective volume fraction because of the volume phase transition of the CS microgels. A discontinuous repulsive glass-to-liquid-to-gel transition can be observed when the PSS concentration is low, but a continuous repulsive glass-to-gel transition can also be observed with the increase of the PSS concentration. This may hint that glass transition and physical gelation share a similar mechanism, whereas the former has a longer relaxation time.

Ultra-long-range dynamic correlations in a microscopic model for aging gels

We use large-scale computer simulations to explore the nonequilibrium aging dynamics in a microscopic model for colloidal gels. We find that gelation resulting from a kinetically arrested phase separation is accompanied by "anomalous" particle dynamics revealed by superdiffusive particle motion and compressed exponential relaxation of time correlation functions. Spatiotemporal analysis of the dynamics reveals intermittent heterogeneities producing spatial correlations over extremely large length scales. Our study is a microscopically resolved model reproducing all features of the spontaneous aging dynamics observed experimentally in soft materials.

Bridging and caging in mixed suspensions of microsphere and adsorptive microgel

Gelation and glass transition in a mixed suspension of polystyrene (PS) microsphere and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) microgel were studied as a function of the total colloid volume fraction and mixing ratio of these two components. The PNIPAM microgel, which is adsorbable on the PS microsphere surface, can induce bridging or stabilizing effect between microspheres depending on whether the volume fraction of microgel (ΦMG) is smaller or larger than the saturated adsorption concentration (Φ*MG) for a given volume fraction of the microsphere (ΦMS). Φ*MG is in a linear relationship with ΦMS, and the value of ΦMG/Φ*MG can be taken as an approximate measure of surface coverage. A state diagram of gelation and glass transition is constructed with the short-ranged attractive interaction, resulting from the well-defined bridging bonding. Keeping ΦMG/Φ*MG = 0.20 and increasing ΦMS from 0.25 to 0.55, the mixed suspension transforms from a bridging gel into an attractive glass; moreover, while keeping ΦMS = 0.45 and increasing ΦMG/Φ*MG from 0.20 to 1.2, the mixed suspension changes from a bridging gel into an attractive glass, and then to a repulsive glass. The bridging effect and the cage effect can be distinguished by the yielding behaviors in rheological measurements. In the nonlinear dynamic rheological experiments, one-step yielding, corresponding to the disconnecting of bridge network, is observed in the bridging gel, and one-step yielding, corresponding to the breaking of cage, is observed in the repulsive glass. However, a two-step yielding behavior is found in the bridging-induced attractive glass, which is attributed to the bridging effect of microgels and the caging effect of the dense environment.

Dynamical arrest: interplay of glass and gel transitions

The structural arrest of a polymeric suspension might be driven by an increase of the cross-linker concentration, which drives the gel transition, as well as by an increase of the polymer density, which induces a glass transition. These dynamical continuous (gel) and discontinuous (glass) transitions might interfere, since the glass transition might occur within the gel phase, and the gel transition might be induced in a polymer suspension with glassy features. Here we study the interplay of these transitions by investigating via event-driven molecular dynamics simulation the relaxation dynamics of a polymeric suspension as a function of the cross-linker concentration and the monomer volume fraction. We show that the slow dynamics within the gel phase is characterized by a long sub-diffusive regime, which is due both to the crowding as well as to the presence of a percolating cluster. In this regime, the transition of structural arrest is found to occur either along the gel or along the glass line, depending on the length scale at which the dynamics is probed. Where the two lines meet there is no apparent sign of higher order dynamical singularity. Logarithmic behavior typical of A3 singularity appears inside the gel phase along the glass transition line. These findings seem to be related to the results of the mode coupling theory for the F13 schematic model.

Mode-coupling glass transition in a fluid confined by a periodic potential

We show that a fluid under strong spatially periodic confinement displays a glass transition within mode-coupling theory at a much lower density than the corresponding bulk system. We use fluctuating hydrodynamics, with confinement imposed through a periodic potential whose wavelength plays an important role in our treatment. To make the calculation tractable we implement a detailed calculation in one dimension. Although we do not expect simple 1d fluids to show a glass transition, our results are indicative of the behavior expected in higher dimensions. In a certain region of parameter space we observe a three-step relaxation reported recently in computer simulations [S. H. Krishnan, Ph.D. thesis, Indian Institute of Science (2005); Kim et al., Eur. Phys. J. Special Topics 189, 135 (2010)] and a glass-glass transition. We compare our results to those of Krakoviack [Phys. Rev. E 75, 031503 (2007)] and Lang et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 125701 (2010)].

Statistical mechanical approach to secondary processes and structural relaxation in glasses and glass formers: a leading model to describe the onset of Johari-Goldstein processes and their relationship with fully cooperative processes

The interrelation of dynamic processes active on separated time-scales in glasses and viscous liquids is investigated using a model displaying two time-scale bifurcations both between fast and secondary relaxation and between secondary and structural relaxation. The study of the dynamics allows for predictions on the system relaxation above the temperature of dynamic arrest in the mean-field approximation, that are compared with the outcomes of the equations of motion directly derived within the Mode Coupling Theory (MCT) for under-cooled viscous liquids. By varying the external thermodynamic parameters, a wide range of phenomenology can be represented, from a very clear separation of structural and secondary peak in the susceptibility loss to excess wing structures.

Silica through the eyes of colloidal models--when glass is a gel

We perform molecular dynamics simulations of 'floating bond' (FB) models of network-forming liquids and compare the structure and dynamics against the BKS model of silica (van Beest et al 1990 Phys. Rev. Lett. 64 1955), with the aim of gaining a better understanding of glassy silica in terms of the variety of non-ergodic states seen in colloids. At low densities, all the models form tetrahedral networks. At higher densities, tailoring the FB model to allow a higher number of bonds does not capture the structure seen in BKS. Upon rescaling the time and length in order to compare mean squared displacements between models, we find that there are significant differences in the temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient at high density. Additionally, the FB models show a greater range in variability in the behavior of the non-ergodicity parameter and caging length, quantities used to distinguish colloidal gels and glasses. Hence, we find that the glassy behavior of BKS silica can be interpreted as a 'gel' at low densities, with only a marginal gel-to-glass crossover at higher densities.
