Statistical properties of entropy-consuming fluctuations in jammed states of laponite suspensions: Fluctuation relations and generalized Gumbel distribution

Entropy-driven nonequilibrium phonon-stimulated electron-phonon coupling in tin dioxide nanorods

Nonequilibrium (NEQ) phonon fluctuation in a nanosystem has been studied through the statistical assessment of the entropy-production and -consumption events in ultrasmall tin dioxide (SnO_{2}) nanorods. Size- and shape-dependent alteration in free energy leading to modulation of the probability distribution function of the phonon dynamics has been observed from the x-ray diffraction and Raman scattering characterizations. The Gallavotti-Cohen nonequilibrium fluctuation theorem has been utilized to qualitatively describe the aforementioned behaviors under the influence of a global flux. The observation of entropy consumption and thermodynamically favorable entropy-production events indicates the presence of NEQ fluctuations in the phonon modes. The effective energy scale of fluctuation in driven phonon modes, dissipating energy faster than relaxation time, is quantified on the order of nanojoules. From optical absorption and photoluminescence studies, the observation of the electron-phonon coupled state confirms the interaction of the NEQ phonons with electrons. The strength of the coupling has been estimated from the temperature-independent Barry center shift and found to be enhanced to 5.35. Valence band x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy analyses reconcile NEQ phonon mediated alteration of the valence band density of states, activation of silent phonon modes, and superior excitonic transitions, suitable for the new generation of ultrafast quantum device applications.

Observation of non-equilibrium fluctuation in the shear-stress-driven hemoglobin aggregates

Non-equilibrium fluctuations caused by the rearrangement of hemoglobin molecules into an aggregate state under shear stress have been investigated experimentally. The flow response under the shear stress (σ) corroborates the presence of contrasting aggregate and rejuvenation states governed by entropy production and consumption events. From the time-dependent shear rate fluctuation studies of aggregate states, the probability distribution function (PDF) of the rate of work done is observed to be spread from negative to positive values with a net positive mean. The PDFs follow the steady-state fluctuation theorem, even at a smaller timescale than that desired by the theorem. The behavior of the effective temperature (Teff) that emerges from a non-equilibrium fluctuation and interconnects with the structural restrictions of the aggregate state of our driven system is observed to be within the boundary of the thermodynamic uncertainty. The increase in Teff with the applied σ illustrates a phenomenal nonlinear power flux-dependent aggregating behavior in a classic bio-molecular-driven system.

Grazing Incidence X-ray Diffraction Studies of Lipid-Peptide Mixed Monolayers during Shear Flow

Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) studies of monolayers of biomolecules at an air-water interface give quantitative information of in-plane packing, coherence length of crystalline domains, etc. Rheo-GIXD measurements can reveal quantitative changes in the nanocrystalline domains of a monolayer under shear. Here, we report GIXD studies of monolayers of alamethicin peptide, DPPC lipid, and their mixtures at an air-water interface under steady shear stress. The alamethicin monolayer and the mixed monolayer show a flow jamming transition. On the other hand, the pure 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) monolayer under constant stress flows steadily with a notable enhancement of the area/molecule and coherence lengths, suggesting the fusion of nanocrystallites during flow. The DPPC-alamethicin mixed monolayer shows no significant change in the area/DPPC molecule, but the coherence lengths of the individual phases (DPPC and alamethicin) increase, suggesting that the crystallites of individual phases grow bigger by merging of domains. More phase separation occurs in the system during flow. Our results show that rheo-GIXD has the potential to explore in situ molecular structural changes under rheological conditions for a diverse range of confined biomolecules at interfaces.

Quantitative earthquake-like statistical properties of the flow of soft materials below yield stress

The flow behavior of soft materials below the yield stress can be rich and is not fully understood. Here, we report shear-stress-induced reorganization of three-dimensional solid-like soft materials formed by closely packed nematic domains of surfactant micelles and a repulsive Wigner glass formed by anisotropic clay nano-discs having ionic interactions. The creep response of both the systems below the yield stress results in angular velocity fluctuations of the shearing plate showing large temporal burst-like events that resemble seismic foreshocks-aftershocks data measuring the ground motion during earthquake avalanches. We find that the statistical properties of the quake events inside such a burst map on to the scaling relations for magnitude and frequency distribution of earthquakes, given by Gutenberg-Richter and Omori laws, and follow a power-law distribution of the inter-occurrence waiting time. In situ polarized optical microscopy reveals that during these events the system self-organizes to a much stronger solid-like state.

Anisotropic isometric fluctuation relations in experiment and theory on a self-propelled rod

The isometric fluctuation relation (IFR) [P. I. Hurtado et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 108, 7704 (2011)10.1073/pnas.1013209108] relates the relative probability of current fluctuations of fixed magnitude in different spatial directions. We test its validity in an experiment on a tapered rod, rendered motile by vertical vibration and immersed in a sea of spherical beads. We analyze the statistics of the velocity vector of the rod and show that they depart significantly from the IFR of Hurtado et al. Aided by a Langevin-equation model we show that our measurements are largely described by an anisotropic generalization of the IFR [R. Villavicencio et al., Europhys. Lett. 105, 30009 (2014)10.1209/0295-5075/105/30009], with no fitting parameters, but with a discrepancy in the prefactor whose origin may lie in the detailed statistics of the microscopic noise. The experimentally determined large-deviation function of the velocity vector has a kink on a curve in the plane.
