Equilibration of isolated many-body quantum systems with respect to general distinguishability measures

Statistical complexity and the road to equilibrium in many-body chaotic quantum systems

In this work we revisit the problem of equilibration in isolated many-body interacting quantum systems. We pay particular attention to quantum chaotic Hamiltonians, and rather than focusing on the properties of the asymptotic states and how they adhere to the predictions of the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis, we focus on the equilibration process itself, i.e., the road to equilibrium. Along the road to equilibrium the diagonal ensembles obey an emergent form of the second law of thermodynamics and we provide an information theoretic proof of this fact. With this proof at hand we show that the road to equilibrium is nothing but a hierarchy in time of diagonal ensembles. Furthermore, introducing the notions of statistical complexity and the entropy-complexity plane, we investigate the uniqueness of the road to equilibrium in a generic many-body system by comparing its trajectories in the entropy-complexity plane to those generated by a random Hamiltonian. Finally, by treating the random Hamiltonian as a perturbation we analyzed the stability of entropy-complexity trajectories associated with the road to equilibrium for a chaotic Hamiltonian and different types of initial states.

Eigenstate thermalization on average

We consider conditions under which an isolated quantum system approaches a microcanonical equilibrium state. A key component is the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, which proposes that all energy eigenstates appear thermal. We introduce a weaker version of this requirement, applying only to the average distinguishability of eigenstates from the thermal state, and investigate its necessity and sufficiency for thermalization.

Dynamical Typicality Approach to Eigenstate Thermalization

We consider the set of all initial states within a microcanonical energy shell of an isolated many-body quantum system, which exhibit an arbitrary but fixed nonequilibrium expectation value for some given observable A. On the condition that this set is not too small, it is shown by means of a dynamical typicality approach that most such initial states exhibit thermalization if and only if A satisfies the so-called weak eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (wETH). Here, thermalization means that the expectation value of A spends most of its time close to the microcanonical value after initial transients have died out. The wETH means that, within the energy shell, most eigenstates of the pertinent system Hamiltonian exhibit very similar expectation values of A.

Typical Relaxation of Isolated Many-Body Systems Which Do Not Thermalize

We consider isolated many-body quantum systems which do not thermalize; i.e., expectation values approach an (approximately) steady longtime limit which disagrees with the microcanonical prediction of equilibrium statistical mechanics. A general analytical theory is worked out for the typical temporal relaxation behavior in such cases. The main prerequisites are initial conditions which appreciably populate many energy levels and do not give rise to significant spatial inhomogeneities on macroscopic scales. The theory explains very well the experimental and numerical findings in a trapped-ion quantum simulator exhibiting many-body localization, in ultracold atomic gases, and in integrable hard-core boson and XXZ models.
