Ultrafast magnon generation in an Fe film on Cu(100)

Ultrafast spin transfer and its impact on the electronic structure

Optically induced intersite spin transfer (OISTR) promises manipulation of spin systems within the ultimate time limit of laser excitation. Following its prediction, signatures of ultrafast spin transfer between oppositely aligned spin sublattices have been observed in magnetic alloys and multilayers. However, it is known neither from theory nor from experiment whether the band structure immediately follows the ultrafast change in spin polarization or whether the exchange split bands remain rigid. We show that ultrafast spin transfer occurs even in ferromagnetic gadolinium metal. Charge transfer between localized surface and extended valence-band states leads to a decrease of the surface spin polarization. This synchronously alters the exchange splitting of the bulk valence bands during laser excitation. Moreover, the onset of demagnetization can be tuned by over 200 fs by changing the temperature-dependent spin mixing. Our results show a promising route to ultrafast control of the magnetization, widening the impact and applicability of OISTR.

All-optical spin switching on an ultrafast time scale

Information technology revolution demands bigger and faster magnetic storage. All-optical spin switching (AOS) may offer a solution, where an ultrafast laser pulse alone can switch magnetization from one direction to another faithfully within 1-10 ps, free of a magnetic field. There are two types of switching: One is the helicity-dependent all-optical spin switching (HD-AOS) and the other the helicity-independent all-optical spin switching (HID-AOS). In a few alloys, one single laser pulse, with sufficient fluence, can switch spin, but the majority of magnetic materials requires multiple pulses. Both material-specific and laser-specific properties strongly affect the switching process. However, the underlying mechanism is still under debate. As the entire research field moves toward applications, it is very appropriate to review what has been achieved in the last decade. This review covers some of the major experimental and theoretical developments within the last decade, and serves as an introduction to the uninitiated reader in this field and a summary for the seasoned researchers.

Microscopic insights to spin transport-driven ultrafast magnetization dynamics in a Gd/Fe bilayer

Laser-induced spin transport is a key ingredient in ultrafast spin dynamics. However, it remains debated to what extent ultrafast magnetization dynamics generates spin currents and vice versa. We use time- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study an antiferromagnetically coupled Gd/Fe bilayer, a prototype system for all-optical switching. Spin transport leads to an ultrafast drop of the spin polarization at the Gd surface, demonstrating angular-momentum transfer over several nanometers. Thereby, Fe acts as spin filter, absorbing spin majority but reflecting spin minority electrons. Spin transport from Gd to Fe was corroborated by an ultrafast increase of the Fe spin polarization in a reversed Fe/Gd bilayer. In contrast, for a pure Gd film, spin transport into the tungsten substrate can be neglected, as spin polarization stays constant. Our results suggest that ultrafast spin transport drives the magnetization dynamics in Gd/Fe and reveal microscopic insights into ultrafast spin dynamics.

Investigation of ultrafast demagnetization and Gilbert damping and their correlation in different ferromagnetic thin films grown under identical conditions

Following the demonstration of laser-induced ultrafast demagnetization in ferromagnetic nickel, several theoretical and phenomenological propositions have sought to uncover its underlying physics. In this work we revisit the three temperature model (3TM) and the microscopic three temperature model (M3TM) to perform a comparative analysis of ultrafast demagnetization in 20 nm thick cobalt, nickel and permalloy thin films measured using an all-optical pump-probe technique. In addition to the ultrafast dynamics at the femtosecond timescales, the nanosecond magnetization precession and damping are recorded at various pump excitation fluences revealing a fluence-dependent enhancement in both the demagnetization times and the damping factors. We confirm that the Curie temperature to magnetic moment ratio of a given system acts as a figure of merit for the demagnetization time, while the demagnetization times and damping factors show an apparent sensitivity to the density of states at the Fermi level for a given system. Further, from numerical simulations of the ultrafast demagnetization based on both the 3TM and the M3TM, we extract the reservoir coupling parameters that best reproduce the experimental data and estimate the value of the spin flip scattering probability for each system. We discuss how the fluence-dependence of inter-reservoir coupling parameters so extracted may reflect a role played by nonthermal electrons in the magnetization dynamics at low laser fluences.

Nonlinear Decay of Quantum Confined Magnons in Itinerant Ferromagnets

Quantum confinement leads to the emergence of several magnon modes in ultrathin layered magnetic structures. We probe the lifetime of these quantum confined modes in a model system composed of three atomic layers of Co grown on different surfaces. We demonstrate that the quantum confined magnons exhibit nonlinear decay rates, which strongly depend on the mode number, in sharp contrast to what is assumed in the classical dynamics. Combining the experimental results with those of linear-response density-functional calculations we provide a quantitative explanation for this nonlinear damping effect. The results provide new insights into the decay mechanism of spin excitations in ultrathin films and multilayers and pave the way for tuning the dynamical properties of such structures.

Electron-phonon interaction in In-induced structures on Si(111) from first-principles

Electron-phonon interaction in the Si(111)-supported rectangular phases of In is investigated within the density-functional theory and linear-response. For both single-layer and double-layer structures, it is found that the phonon-induced scattering of electrons is almost exclusively determined by vibrations of In atoms. It is shown that the strength of electron-phonon coupling at the Fermi level λ(E_F) increases almost twofold upon adding the second In layer. One of the reasons is that additional low-frequency modes appear in the phonon spectrum, which favors a strong enhancement of λ(E_F). The agreement of the calculated parameter λ(E_F) = 0.99 for a double-layer structure as well as the superconducting transition temperature T_c = 3.5 K with experimental estimates indicates that the discovered superconducting phase is probably a double-layer rectangular -In structure on Si(111) with a coverage of 2.4 ML. This conclusion is also supported by good agreement between the calculated electron band structure and ARPES measurements.

Magnetic and vibrational properties of small chromium clusters on the Cu(111) surface

The structure and magnetic properties of small Cr clusters, Cr₃ and Cr₄, adsorbed on the Cu(111) surface have been investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and their vibrational properties have been studied within calculations based on tight-binding second moment approximation interatomic interaction potentials (TBSMA). It has been shown that the magnetic ordering in the Cr clusters significantly affects their crystal structure and symmetry, which influences the vibrational modes of the clusters and nearest neighbor copper atoms. In turn, these modes select potentially possible structures of Cr₃ and Cr₄, prohibiting the lowest total energy cluster structure as dynamically unstable.

Ultrafast optical manipulation of magnetic order in ferromagnetic materials

The interaction between ultrafast lasers and magnetic materials is an appealing topic. It not only involves interesting fundamental questions that remain inconclusive and hence need further investigation, but also has the potential to revolutionize data storage technologies because such an opto-magnetic interaction provides an ultrafast and energy-efficient means to control magnetization. Fruitful progress has been made in this area over the past quarter century. In this paper, we review the state-of-the-art experimental and theoretical studies on magnetization dynamics and switching in ferromagnetic materials that are induced by ultrafast lasers. We start by describing the physical mechanisms of ultrafast demagnetization based on different experimental observations and theoretical methods. Both the spin-flip scattering theory and the superdiffusive spin transport model will be discussed in detail. Then, we will discuss laser-induced torques and resultant magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic materials. Recent developments of all-optical switching (AOS) of ferromagnetic materials towards ultrafast magnetic storage and memory will also be reviewed, followed by the perspectives on the challenges and future directions in this emerging area.

Element-Specific Magnetization Dynamics of Complex Magnetic Systems Probed by Ultrafast Magneto-Optical Spectroscopy

The vision to manipulate and control magnetism with light is driven on the one hand by fundamental questions of direct and indirect photon-spin interactions, and on the other hand by the necessity to cope with ever growing data volumes, requiring radically new approaches on how to write, read and process information. Here, we present two complementary experimental geometries to access the element-specific magnetization dynamics of complex magnetic systems via ultrafast magneto-optical spectroscopy in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range. First, we employ linearly polarized radiation of a free electron laser facility to demonstrate decoupled dynamics of the two sublattices of an FeGd alloy, a prerequisite for all-optical magnetization switching. Second, we use circularly polarized radiation generated in a laboratory-based high harmonic generation setup to show optical inter-site spin transfer in a CoPt alloy, a mechanism which only very recently has been predicted to mediate ultrafast metamagnetic phase transitions.

Ultrafast terahertz magnetometry

A material's magnetic state and its dynamics are of great fundamental research interest and are also at the core of a wide plethora of modern technologies. However, reliable access to magnetization dynamics in materials and devices on the technologically relevant ultrafast timescale, and under realistic device-operation conditions, remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrate a method of ultrafast terahertz (THz) magnetometry, which gives direct access to the (sub-)picosecond magnetization dynamics even in encapsulated materials or devices in a contact-free fashion, in a fully calibrated manner, and under ambient conditions. As a showcase for this powerful method, we measure the ultrafast magnetization dynamics in a laser-excited encapsulated iron film. Our measurements reveal and disentangle distinct contributions originating from (i) incoherent hot-magnon-driven magnetization quenching and (ii) coherent acoustically-driven modulation of the exchange interaction in iron, paving the way to technologies utilizing ultrafast heat-free control of magnetism. High sensitivity and relative ease of experimental arrangement highlight the promise of ultrafast THz magnetometry for both fundamental studies and the technological applications of magnetism.

Anomalous Behaviors of Spin Waves Studied by Inelastic Light Scattering

Magnonics, an emerging research field, aims to control and manipulate spin waves in magnetic materials and structures. However, the current understanding of spin waves remains quite limited. This review attempts to provide an overview of the anomalous behaviors of spin waves in various types of magnetic materials observed thus far by inelastic light scattering experiments. The anomalously large asymmetry of anti-Stokes to Stokes intensity ratio, broad linewidth, strong resonance effect, unique polarization selection, and abnormal impurity dependence of spin waves are discussed. In addition, the mechanisms of these anomalous behaviors of spin waves are proposed.

Role of initial magnetic disorder: A time-dependent ab initio study of ultrafast demagnetization mechanisms

Despite more than 20 years of development, the underlying physics of the laser-induced demagnetization process is still debated. We present a fast, real-time time-dependent density functional theory (rt-TDDFT) algorithm together with the phenomenological atomic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert model to investigate this problem. Our Hamiltonian considers noncollinear magnetic moment, spin-orbit coupling (SOC), electron-electron, electron-phonon, and electron-light interactions. The algorithm for time evolution achieves hundreds of times of speedup enabling calculation of large systems. Our simulations yield a demagnetization rate similar to experiments. We found that (i) the angular momentum flow from light to the system is not essential and the spin Zeeman effect is negligible. (ii) The phonon can play a role but is not essential. (iii) The initial spin disorder and the self-consistent update of the electron-electron interaction play dominant roles and enhance the demagnetization to the experimentally observed rate. The spin disorder connects the electronic structure theory with the phenomenological three-temperature model.

Revealing the Nature of the Ultrafast Magnetic Phase Transition in Ni by Correlating Extreme Ultraviolet Magneto-Optic and Photoemission Spectroscopies

By correlating time- and angle-resolved photoemission and time-resolved transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements, both at extreme ultraviolet wavelengths, we uncover the universal nature of the ultrafast photoinduced magnetic phase transition in Ni. This allows us to explain the ultrafast magnetic response of Ni at all laser fluences-from a small reduction of the magnetization at low laser fluences, to complete quenching at high laser fluences. Both probe methods exhibit the same demagnetization and recovery timescales. The spin system absorbs the energy required to proceed through a magnetic phase transition within 20 fs after the peak of the pump pulse. However, the spectroscopic signatures of demagnetization of the material appear only after ≈200  fs and the subsequent recovery of magnetization on timescales ranging from 500 fs to >70  ps. We also provide evidence of two competing channels with two distinct timescales in the recovery process that suggest the presence of coexisting phases in the material.

The indispensable role of the transversal spin fluctuations mechanism in laser-induced demagnetization of Co/Pt multilayers with nanoscale magnetic domains

The switching of magnetic domains induced by an ultrashort laser pulse has been demonstrated in nanostructured ferromagnetic films. This leads to the dawn of a new era in breaking the ultimate physical limit for the speed of magnetic switching and manipulation, which is relevant to current and future information storage. However, our understanding of the interactions between light and spins in magnetic heterostructures with nanoscale domain structures is still lacking. Here, both time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect experiments and atomistic simulations are carried out to investigate the dominant mechanism of laser-induced ultrafast demagnetization in [Co/Pt]₂₀ multilayers with nanoscale magnetic domains. It is found that the ultrafast demagnetization time remains constant with various magnetic configurations, indicating that the domain structures play a minor role in laser-induced ultrafast demagnetization. In addition, both in experiment and atomistic simulations, we find a dependence of ultrafast demagnetization time τ _M on the laser fluence, which is in contrast to the observations of spin transport within magnetic domains. The remarkable agreement between experiment and atomistic simulations indicates that the local dissipation of spin angular momentum is the dominant demagnetization mechanism in this system. More interestingly, we made a comparison between the atomistic spin dynamic simulation and the longitudinal spin flip model, highlighting that the transversal spin fluctuations mechanism is responsible for the ultrafast demagnetization in the case of inhomogeneous magnetic structures. This is a significant advance in clarifying the microscopic mechanism underlying the process of ultrafast demagnetization in inhomogeneous magnetic structures.

Ultrafast demagnetization in iron: Separating effects by their nonlinearity

The laser-driven ultrafast demagnetization effect is one of the long-standing problems in solid-state physics. The time scale is given not only by the transfer of energy, but also by the transport of angular momentum away from the spin system. Through a double-pulse experiment resembling two-dimensional spectroscopy, we separate the different pathways by their nonlinear properties. We find (a) that the loss of magnetization within 400 fs is not affected by the previous excitations (linear process), and (b) we observe a picosecond demagnetization contribution that is strongly affected by the previous excitations. Our experimental approach is useful not only for studying femtosecond spin dynamics, but can also be adapted to other problems in solid-state dynamics.

Critical behavior within 20 fs drives the out-of-equilibrium laser-induced magnetic phase transition in nickel

It has long been known that ferromagnets undergo a phase transition from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic at the Curie temperature, associated with critical phenomena such as a divergence in the heat capacity. A ferromagnet can also be transiently demagnetized by heating it with an ultrafast laser pulse. However, to date, the connection between out-of-equilibrium and equilibrium phase transitions, or how fast the out-of-equilibrium phase transitions can proceed, was not known. By combining time- and angle-resolved photoemission with time-resolved transverse magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopies, we show that the same critical behavior also governs the ultrafast magnetic phase transition in nickel. This is evidenced by several observations. First, we observe a divergence of the transient heat capacity of the electron spin system preceding material demagnetization. Second, when the electron temperature is transiently driven above the Curie temperature, we observe an extremely rapid change in the material response: The spin system absorbs sufficient energy within the first 20 fs to subsequently proceed through the phase transition, whereas demagnetization and the collapse of the exchange splitting occur on much longer, fluence-independent time scales of ~176 fs. Third, we find that the transient electron temperature alone dictates the magnetic response. Our results are important because they connect the out-of-equilibrium material behavior to the strongly coupled equilibrium behavior and uncover a new time scale in the process of ultrafast demagnetization.

Laser-induced ultrafast spin current pulses: a thermodynamic approach

The ultrafast demagnetization process allows for the generation of femtosecond spin current pulses. Here, we present a thermodynamic model of the spin current generation process, based on the chemical potential gradients as the driving force for the spin current. We demonstrate that the laser-induced spin current can be estimated by an easy to understand diffusion model.

Hot-Electron-Induced Ultrafast Demagnetization in Co/Pt Multilayers

Using specially engineered structures to tailor the optical absorption in a metallic multilayer, we analyze the magnetization dynamics of a Co/Pt multilayer buried below a thick Cu layer. We demonstrate that hot electrons alone can very efficiently induce ultrafast demagnetization. Simulations based on hot electron ballistic transport implemented within a microscopic model that accounts for local dissipation of angular momentum nicely reproduce the experimental results, ruling out contribution of pure thermal transport.

Spin-dependent lifetime and exchange splitting of surface states on Ni(1 1 1)

We report on a spin-resolved two-photon photoemission study of the Ni(1 1 1) surface states. Nickel thin films were grown by molecular beam epitaxy on a W(1 1 0) substrate. The first image-potential state is used as a sensor to map the spin polarization of the occupied surface states. This allows us to identify the majority spin component of the Shockley surface state as well as a majority and minority d-derived surface resonance. The n = 1 image-potential state is found to be exchange split by 14 ± 3 meV. In spite of the fact that the band structure at the Fermi level exhibits a strongly discerned density of states in both spin channels, we observe low spin asymmetries in the decay and dephasing rates of the photoexcited electrons. Varying the sample preparation reveals that the Shockley surface state contributes about 40% to the spin-dependent decay rate.

Investigating the role of superdiffusive currents in laser induced demagnetization of ferromagnets with nanoscale magnetic domains

Understanding the loss of magnetic order and the microscopic mechanisms involved in laser induced magnetization dynamics is one of the most challenging topics in today's magnetism research. While scattering between spins, phonons, magnons and electrons have been proposed as sources for dissipation of spin angular momentum, ultrafast spin dependent transport of hot electrons has been pointed out as a potential candidate to explain ultrafast demagnetization without resorting to any spin dissipation channel. Here we use time resolved magneto-optical Kerr measurements to extract the influence of spin dependent transport on the demagnetization dynamics taking place in magnetic samples with alternating domains with opposite magnetization directions. We unambiguously show that whatever the sample magnetic configuration, the demagnetization takes place during the same time, demonstrating that hot electrons spin dependent transfer between neighboring domains does not alter the ultrafast magnetization dynamics in our systems with perpendicular anisotropy and 140 nm domain sizes.

Rapid high-resolution spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with pulsed laser source and time-of-flight spectrometer

A high-efficiency spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (spin-ARPES) spectrometer is coupled with a laboratory-based laser for rapid high-resolution measurements. The spectrometer combines time-of-flight (TOF) energy measurements with low-energy exchange scattering spin polarimetry for high detection efficiencies. Samples are irradiated with fourth harmonic photons generated from a cavity-dumped Ti:sapphire laser that provides high photon flux in a narrow bandwidth, with a pulse timing structure ideally matched to the needs of the TOF spectrometer. The overall efficiency of the combined system results in near-E(F) spin-resolved ARPES measurements with an unprecedented combination of energy resolution and acquisition speed. This allows high-resolution spin measurements with a large number of data points spanning multiple dimensions of interest (energy, momentum, photon polarization, etc.) and thus enables experiments not otherwise possible. The system is demonstrated with spin-resolved energy and momentum mapping of the L-gap Au(111) surface states, a prototypical Rashba system. The successful integration of the spectrometer with the pulsed laser system demonstrates its potential for simultaneous spin- and time-resolved ARPES with pump-probe based measurements.

Controlling the competition between optically induced ultrafast spin-flip scattering and spin transport in magnetic multilayers

The study of ultrafast dynamics in magnetic materials provides rich opportunities for greater fundamental understanding of correlated phenomena in solid-state matter, because many of the basic microscopic mechanisms involved are as-yet unclear and are still being uncovered. Recently, two different possible mechanisms have been proposed to explain ultrafast laser induced magnetization dynamics: spin currents and spin-flip scattering. In this work, we use multilayers of Fe and Ni with different metals and insulators as the spacer material to conclusively show that spin currents can have a significant contribution to optically induced magnetization dynamics, in addition to spin-flip scattering processes. Moreover, we can control the competition between these two processes, and in some cases completely suppress interlayer spin currents as a sample undergoes rapid demagnetization. Finally, by reversing the order of the Fe/Ni layers, we experimentally show that spin currents are directional in our samples, predominantly flowing from the top to the bottom layer.

Terahertz spin current pulses controlled by magnetic heterostructures

In spin-based electronics, information is encoded by the spin state of electron bunches. Processing this information requires the controlled transport of spin angular momentum through a solid, preferably at frequencies reaching the so far unexplored terahertz regime. Here, we demonstrate, by experiment and theory, that the temporal shape of femtosecond spin current bursts can be manipulated by using specifically designed magnetic heterostructures. A laser pulse is used to drive spins from a ferromagnetic iron thin film into a non-magnetic cap layer that has either low (ruthenium) or high (gold) electron mobility. The resulting transient spin current is detected by means of an ultrafast, contactless amperemeter based on the inverse spin Hall effect, which converts the spin flow into a terahertz electromagnetic pulse. We find that the ruthenium cap layer yields a considerably longer spin current pulse because electrons are injected into ruthenium d states, which have a much lower mobility than gold sp states. Thus, spin current pulses and the resulting terahertz transients can be shaped by tailoring magnetic heterostructures, which opens the door to engineering high-speed spintronic devices and, potentially, broadband terahertz emitters.

Individual atomic-scale magnets interacting with spin-polarized field-emitted electrons

We resonantly inject spin-polarized field-emitted electrons in thermally switching nanomagnets. A detailed lifetime analysis as a function of the spin-polarized emission current reveals that considerable Joule heating is generated, and spin-transfer torque results in a directed switching. A trend of higher switching efficiency per electron is observed with an increasing emission current, probably due to the excitation of Stoner modes. On a quasistable nanomagnet, a spin-polarized emission current in the low nA regime already triggers magnetization reversal, thereby demonstrating the high impact of hot-electron spins onto atomic-scale magnets.

Relaxation time of terahertz magnons excited at ferromagnetic surfaces

The temporal and spatial properties of terahertz magnons excited at ferromagnetic fcc Co(100) and bcc Fe(110) surfaces are investigated experimentally. The magnon lifetime is found to be a few tens of femtoseconds at low wave vectors, which reduces significantly as the wave vector approaches the Brillouin zone boundary. Surprisingly, the lifetime is very similar in both systems, in spite of the fact that the excitation energy in the Co(100) film is by a factor of two larger than in the Fe(110) film. The magnon wave packets propagate only a few nanometers within their lifetime. In addition to the fact that our results describe the damping mechanism in ultrafast time scales, they may provide a way to predict the ultimate time scale of magnetic switching in nanostructures.

Femtosecond laser excitation drives ferromagnetic gadolinium out of magnetic equilibrium

The temporal evolution of the exchange-split Δ(2)-like Σ valence bands of the 4f-ferromagnet gadolinium after femtosecond laser excitation has been studied using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy based on high-order harmonic generation. The ultrafast drop of the exchange splitting reflects the magnetic response seen in femtosecond magnetic dichroism experiments. However, while the minority valence band reacts immediately, the response of the majority counterpart is delayed by 1 picosecond and is only half as fast. These findings demonstrate that laser excitation drives the valence band structure out of magnetic equilibrium.

Ab Initio investigation of the Elliott-Yafet electron-phonon mechanism in laser-induced ultrafast demagnetization

The spin-flip (SF) Eliashberg function is calculated from first principles for ferromagnetic Ni to accurately establish the contribution of Elliott-Yafet electron-phonon SF scattering to Ni's femtosecond laser-driven demagnetization. This is used to compute the SF probability and demagnetization rate for laser-created thermalized as well as nonequilibrium electron distributions. Increased SF probabilities are found for thermalized electrons, but the induced demagnetization rate is extremely small. A larger demagnetization rate is obtained for nonequilibrium electron distributions, but its contribution is too small to account for femtosecond demagnetization.

Role of spin-flip exchange scattering for hot-electron lifetimes in cobalt

The spin-dependent lifetimes of hot electrons in fcc Co films were studied by spin- and time-resolved two-photon photoemission. Even for excitation energies close to the Fermi level, we find almost identical lifetimes for majority and minority electrons. This result contradicts ab initio theories predicting 5 to 10 times longer lifetimes for the majority electrons in 3d ferromagnets. We provide direct experimental evidence that this discrepancy is caused by the dominance of exchange scattering in inelastic electron decay, in combination with the excitation of secondary electrons. The latter are inherent for all real materials and devices.
