Fate of Majorana Modes in CeCoIn_{5}/YbCoIn_{5} Superlattices: A Test Bed for the Reduction of Topological Classification

Controlling unconventional superconductivity in artificially engineeredf-electron Kondo superlattices

Unconventional superconductivity and magnetism are intertwined on a microscopic level in a wide class of materials, including high-T_ccuprates, iron pnictides, and heavy-fermion compounds. Interactions between superconducting electrons and bosonic fluctuations at the interface between adjacent layers in heterostructures provide a new approach to this most fundamental and hotly debated subject. We have been able to use a recent state-of-the-art molecular-beam-epitaxy technique to fabricate superlattices consisting of different heavy-fermion compounds with atomic thickness. These Kondo superlattices provide a unique opportunity to study the mutual interaction between unconventional superconductivity and magnetic order through the atomic interface. Here, we design and fabricate hybrid Kondo superlattices consisting of alternating layers of superconducting CeCoIn₅withd-wave pairing symmetry and nonmagnetic metal YbCoIn₅or antiferromagnetic heavy fermion metals such as CeRhIn₅and CeIn₃. In these Kondo superlattices, superconducting heavy electrons are confined within the two-dimensional CeCoIn₅block layers and interact with neighboring nonmagnetic or magnetic layers through the interface. Superconductivity is strongly influenced by local inversion symmetry breaking at the interface in CeCoIn₅/YbCoIn₅superlattices. The superconducting and antiferromagnetic states coexist in spatially separated layers in CeCoIn₅/CeRhIn₅and CeCoIn₅/CeIn₃superlattices, but their mutual coupling via the interface significantly modifies the superconducting and magnetic properties. The fabrication of a wide variety of hybrid superlattices paves a new way to study the relationship between unconventional superconductivity and magnetism in strongly correlated materials.

Higher-Order Topological Mott Insulators

We propose a new correlated topological state, which we call a higher-order topological Mott insulator (HOTMI). This state exhibits a striking bulk-boundary correspondence due to electron correlations. Namely, the topological properties in the bulk, characterized by the Z_{3} spin-Berry phase, result in gapless corner modes emerging only in spin excitations (i.e., the single-particle excitations remain gapped around the corner). We demonstrate the emergence of the HOTMI in a Hubbard model on the kagome lattice, and elucidate how strong correlations change gapless corner modes at the noninteracting case.

Interacting topological insulators: a review

The discovery of the quantum spin Hall effect and topological insulators more than a decade ago has revolutionized modern condensed matter physics. Today, the field of topological states of matter is one of the most active and fruitful research areas for both experimentalists and theorists. The physics of topological insulators is typically well described by band theory and systems of non-interacting fermions. In contrast, several of the most fascinating effects in condensed matter physics merely exist due to electron-electron interactions, examples include unconventional superconductivity, the Kondo effect, and the Mott-Hubbard transition. The aim of this review article is to give an overview of the manifold directions which emerge when topological bandstructures and correlation physics interfere and compete. These include the study of the stability of topological bandstructures and correlated topological insulators. Interaction-induced topological phases such as the topological Kondo insulator provide another exciting topic. More exotic states of matter such as topological Mott insulator and fractional Chern insulators only exist due to the interplay of topology and strong interactions and do not have any bandstructure analogue. Eventually the relation between topological bandstructures and frustrated quantum magnetism in certain transition metal oxides is emphasized.

Reduction of Topological Z Classification in Cold-Atom Systems

One of the most challenging problems in correlated topological systems is a realization of the reduction of topological classification, but very few experimental platforms have been proposed so far. We here demonstrate that ultracold dipolar fermions (e.g., ^{167}Er, ^{161}Dy, and ^{53}Cr) loaded in an optical lattice of two-leg ladder geometry can be the first promising test bed for the reduction Z→Z_{4}, where solid evidence for the reduction is available thanks to their high controllability. We further give a detailed account of how to experimentally access this phenomenon; around the edges, the destruction of one-particle gapless excitations can be observed by the local radio frequency spectroscopy, while that of gapless spin excitations can be observed by a time-dependent spin expectation value of a superposed state of the ground state and the first excited state. We clarify that even when the reduction occurs, a gapless edge mode is recovered around a dislocation, which can be another piece of evidence for the reduction.
