Enhancing the Hot-Phonon Bottleneck Effect in a Metal Halide Perovskite by Terahertz Phonon Excitation

Contrasting Ultra-Low Frequency Raman and Infrared Modes in Emerging Metal Halides for Photovoltaics

Lattice dynamics are critical to photovoltaic material performance, governing dynamic disorder, hot-carrier cooling, charge-carrier recombination, and transport. Soft metal-halide perovskites exhibit particularly intriguing dynamics, with Raman spectra exhibiting an unusually broad low-frequency response whose origin is still much debated. Here, we utilize ultra-low frequency Raman and infrared terahertz time-domain spectroscopies to provide a systematic examination of the vibrational response for a wide range of metal-halide semiconductors: FAPbI3, MAPbI x Br3-x , CsPbBr3, PbI2, Cs2AgBiBr6, Cu2AgBiI6, and AgI. We rule out extrinsic defects, octahedral tilting, cation lone pairs, and "liquid-like" Boson peaks as causes of the debated central Raman peak. Instead, we propose that the central Raman response results from an interplay of the significant broadening of Raman-active, low-energy phonon modes that are strongly amplified by a population component from Bose-Einstein statistics toward low frequency. These findings elucidate the complexities of light interactions with low-energy lattice vibrations in soft metal-halide semiconductors emerging for photovoltaic applications.

Hot Carrier Trapping and It's Influence to the Carrier Diffusion in CsPbBr3 Perovskite Film Revealed by Transient Absorption Microscopy

The defects in perovskite film can cause charge carrier trapping which shortens carrier lifetime and diffusion length. So defects passivation has become promising for the perovskite studies. However, how defects disturb the carrier transport and how the passivating affects the carrier transport in CsPbBr3 are still unclear. Here the carrier dynamics and diffusion processes of CsPbBr3 and LiBr passivated CsPbBr3 films are investigated by using transient absorption spectroscopy and transient absorption microscopy. It's found that there is a fast hot carrier trapping process with the above bandgap excitation, and the hot carrier trapping would decrease the population of cold carriers which are diffusible, then lower the carrier diffusion constant. It's proved that LiBr can passivate the defect and lower the trapping probability of hot carriers, thus improve the carrier diffusion rate. The finding demonstrates the influence of hot carrier trapping to the carrier diffusion in CsPbBr3 film.

Modulating Thermal Conductivity via Targeted Phonon Excitation

Thermal conductivity is a critical material property in numerous applications, such as those related to thermoelectric devices and heat dissipation. Effectively modulating thermal conductivity has become a great concern in the field of heat conduction. Here, a quantum modulation strategy is proposed to modulate the thermal conductivity/heat flux by exciting targeted phonons. It shows that the thermal conductivity of graphene can be tailored in the range of 1559 W m-1 K-1 (decreased to 49%) to 4093 W m-1 K-1 (increased to 128%), compared with the intrinsic value of 3189 W m-1 K-1. The effects are also observed for graphene nanoribbons and bulk silicon. The results are obtained through both density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. This novel modulation strategy may pave the way for quantum heat conduction.

Thermal Transport Properties of Phonons in Halide Perovskites

Halide perovskites have emerged as promising candidates for various applications, such as photovoltaic, optoelectronic and thermoelectric applications. The knowledge of the thermal transport of halide perovskites is essential for enhancing the device performance for these applications and improving the understanding of heat transport in complicated material systems with atomic disorders. In this work, the current understanding of the experimentally and theoretically obtained thermal transport properties of halide perovskites is reviewed. This study comprehensively examines the reported thermal conductivity of methylammonium lead iodide, which is a prototype material, and provides theoretical frameworks for its lattice vibrational properties. The frameworks and discussions are extended to other halide perovskites and derivative structures. The implications for device applications, such as solar cells and thermoelectrics, are discussed.

Anti-Stokes Photoluminescence in Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals: From Understanding the Mechanism towards Application in Fully Solid-State Optical Cooling

Anti-Stokes photoluminescence (ASPL) is an up-conversion phonon-assisted process of radiative recombination of photoexcited charge carriers when the ASPL photon energy is above the excitation one. This process can be very efficient in nanocrystals (NCs) of metalorganic and inorganic semiconductors with perovskite (Pe) crystal structure. In this review, we present an analysis of the basic mechanisms of ASPL and discuss its efficiency depending on the size distribution and surface passivation of Pe-NCs as well as the optical excitation energy and temperature. When the ASPL process is sufficiently efficient, it can result in an escape of most of the optical excitation together with the phonon energy from the Pe-NCs. It can be used in optical fully solid-state cooling or optical refrigeration.

Carriers, Quasi-particles, and Collective Excitations in Halide Perovskites

Halide perovskites (HPs) are potential game-changing materials for a broad spectrum of optoelectronic applications ranging from photovoltaics, light-emitting devices, lasers to radiation detectors, ferroelectrics, thermoelectrics, etc. Underpinning this spectacular expansion is their fascinating photophysics involving a complex interplay of carrier, lattice, and quasi-particle interactions spanning several temporal orders that give rise to their remarkable optical and electronic properties. Herein, we critically examine and distill their dynamical behavior, collective interactions, and underlying mechanisms in conjunction with the experimental approaches. This review aims to provide a unified photophysical picture fundamental to understanding the outstanding light-harvesting and light-emitting properties of HPs. The hotbed of carrier and quasi-particle interactions uncovered in HPs underscores the critical role of ultrafast spectroscopy and fundamental photophysics studies in advancing perovskite optoelectronics.

Ultrafast Excitonic Response in Two-Dimensional Hybrid Perovskites Driven by Intense Midinfrared Pulses

Two-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (2DHPs) are natural quantum-well-like materials, in which strong quantum and dielectric confinement effects due to the organic spacers give rise to tightly bound excitons with large binding energy. To examine the mutual interactions between the organic spacer cations and the inorganic charge-residing octahedral framework in 2DHPs, here we perform femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy by direct vibrational pumping of the organic spacers, followed by a visible-to-ultraviolet probe covering their excitonic resonances. Measurements on prototypical lead-bromide based 2DHP compounds, (BA)_{2}PbBr_{4} and (BA)_{2}(FA)Pb_{2}Br_{7} (BA^{+}=butylammonium; FA^{+}=formamidinium), reveal two distinct regimes of the temporal response. The first regime is dominated by a pump-induced transient expansion of the organic spacer layers that reduces the exciton oscillator strength, whereas the second regime arises from pump-induced lattice heating effects primarily associated with a spectral shift of the exciton energy. In addition, vibrational excitation enhances the biexciton emission, which we attribute to a stronger intralayer exciton confinement as well as vibrationally induced exciton detrapping from defect states. Our study provides fundamental insights regarding the impact of organic spacers on excitons in 2DHPs, as well as the excited-state dynamics and vibrational energy dissipation in these structurally diverse materials.

Biexciton dynamics in halide perovskite nanocrystals

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals are attracting considerable interest as next-generation optoelectronic materials. Optical responses of nanocrystals are determined by excitons and exciton complexes such as trions and biexcitons. Understanding of their dynamics is indispensable for the optimal design of optoelectronic devices and the development of new functional properties. Here, we summarize the recent advances on the exciton and biexciton photophysics in lead halide perovskite nanocrystals revealed by femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy and single-dot spectroscopy. We discuss the impact of the biexciton dynamics on controlling and improving the optical gain.

Exciton-Phonon and Trion-Phonon Couplings Revealed by Photoluminescence Spectroscopy of Single CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystals

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have outstanding photoluminescence (PL) properties and excellent potential for light-emitting diodes and single-photon sources. Here, we report the multiple-peak structures originating from excitons, trions, and biexcitons in low-temperature PL spectra of single CsPbBr₃ NCs. We found fine-structure splitting in the PL peaks of bright excitons and biexcitons and also in the longitudinal-optical (LO)-phonon replicas of excitons. LO-phonon replicas of trions are clearly observed under strong photoexcitation, which do not show fine-structure splitting. From size-dependent analyses of these replicas, we clarified that both exciton-phonon and trion-phonon couplings become larger for smaller NCs and the coupling strengths of trions are larger than those of excitons in large NCs. These behaviors can be explained by the spatial distributions of the electron and hole wave functions in the NCs. Our findings provide essential information on electron-phonon couplings in perovskites and for the design of high-purity single-photon sources.

Transient Suppression of Carrier Mobility Due to Hot Optical Phonons in Lead Bromide Perovskites

In lead halide perovskites, owing to the strong Fröhlich coupling, carrier dynamics that governs the optoelectronic performance is greatly affected by the lattice vibrations. In this emerging class of materials, injected hot carriers quickly relax by emitting optical phonons, and if this process is sufficiently fast, hot optical phonons can be generated, which may in turn hamper the carrier transport. However, the transient interaction between hot phonons and carriers has not yet been investigated. Herein, we identified the transient absorption feature of hot phonons in lead bromide perovskites and then extracted the hot-phonon dynamics. The hot-phonon decay mechanism was uncovered by temperature-dependent measurements. The hot-phonon decay in lead bromide perovskites was an order of magnitude faster than that in GaAs, attributed to the large anharmonicity arising from the lattice softness and structural fluctuation. The carrier mobility was also transiently suppressed by hot phonons, and the mobility recovery was accompanied by the decay of hot phonons.

Spintronic terahertz emission with manipulated polarization (STEMP)

Highly efficient generation and arbitrary manipulation of spin-polarized terahertz (THz) radiation will enable chiral lightwave driven quantum nonequilibrium state regulation, induce new electronic structures, consequently provide a powerful experimental tool for investigation of nonlinear THz optics and extreme THz science and applications. THz circular dichromic spectroscopy, ultrafast electron bunch manipulation, as well as THz imaging, sensing, and telecommunication, also need chiral THz waves. Here we review optical generation of circularly-polarized THz radiation but focus on recently emerged polarization tunable spintronic THz emission techniques, which possess many advantages of ultra-broadband, high efficiency, low cost, easy for integration and so on. We believe that chiral THz sources based on the combination of electron spin, ultrafast optical techniques and material structure engineering will accelerate the development of THz science and applications.

Elucidating the Unique Hot Carrier Cooling in Two-Dimensional Inorganic Halide Perovskites: The Role of Out-of-Plane Carrier-Phonon Coupling

Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites represent the natural semiconductor quantum wells (QWs), which hold great promise for optoelectronics. However, due to the hybrid structure of Ruddlesden-Popper 2D perovskites, the intrinsic nature of hot-carrier kinetics remains shielded within. Herein, we adopt CsPbBr₃ nanoplates as a model system to reveal the intrinsic carrier dynamics in inorganic perovskite QWs. Interestingly, we revealed an ultrafast and hot-phonon-bottleneck (HPB)-free carrier cooling in monodisperse CsPbBr₃ QWs, which is in sharp contrast to the bulk and nanocrystalline perovskites. The absence of HPB was attributed to the efficient out-of-plane triplet-exciton-LO-phonon coupling in 2D perovskites because of the structural anisotropy. Accordingly, the HPB can be activated by shutting down the out-of-plane energy loss route through forming the layer-stacked perovskite superlattice. The controllable on and off of HPB may provide new possibilities in optoelectronic devices and these findings deepen the understanding of a hot-carrier cooling mechanism in 2D perovskites.

Cation-Doping in Organic-Inorganic Perovskites to Improve the Structural Stability from Theoretical Prediction

With outstanding photoelectric properties, organic-inorganic perovskites have become promising materials in the application of solar cells. However, their low stability limits their high conversion efficiency. On the basis of first-principles calculations, we screened out the optimal dopant into MAPbI₃ from a variety of organic cations, and further revealed the mechanism underneath for the improved stability of cations doping. Our results have demonstrated that the doping of large-size cations (i.e., IPA⁺, TriMA⁺, and GA⁺) could efficiently inhibit the formation and diffusion of structural defects with high defect formation energies and large migration barriers, which is associated with the lattice expansion and greater hydrogen-bond formation. Our theoretical findings address crucial guidelines to design and synthesize the organic-inorganic perovskite materials with high stability, and provide valuable insights in understanding the stability mechanism, which may enhance the photovoltaic efficiency of perovskite materials and extend their wide applications.

Optimizing the quasi-equilibrium state of hot carriers in all-inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals through Mn doping: fundamental dynamics and device perspectives

Hot carrier (HC) cooling accounts for the significant energy loss in lead halide perovskite (LHP) solar cells. Here, we study HC relaxation dynamics in Mn-doped LHP CsPbI3 nanocrystals (NCs), combining transient absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We demonstrate that Mn2+ doping (1) enlarges the longitudinal optical (LO)-acoustic phonon bandgap, (2) enhances the electron-LO phonon coupling strength, and (3) adds HC relaxation pathways via Mn orbitals within the bands. The spectroscopic study shows that the HC cooling process is decelerated after doping under band-edge excitation due to the dominant phonon bandgap enlargement. When the excitation photon energy is larger than the optical bandgap and the Mn2+ transition gap, the doping accelerates the cooling rate owing to the dominant effect of enhanced carrier-phonon coupling and relaxation pathways. We demonstrate that such a phenomenon is optimal for the application of hot carrier solar cells. The enhanced electron-LO phonon coupling and accelerated cooling of high-temperature hot carriers efficiently establish a high-temperature thermal quasi-equilibrium where the excessive energy of the hot carriers is transferred to heat the cold carriers. On the other hand, the enlarged phononic band-gap prevents further cooling of such a quasi-equilibrium, which facilitates the energy conversion process. Our results manifest a straightforward methodology to optimize the HC dynamics for hot carrier solar cells by element doping.

Nanoscale-Resolved Surface-to-Bulk Electron Transport in CsPbBr3 Perovskite

Describing the nanoscale charge carrier transport at surfaces and interfaces is fundamental for designing high-performance optoelectronic devices. To achieve this, we employ time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with ultraviolet pump and extreme ultraviolet probe pulses. The resulting high surface sensitivity reveals an ultrafast carrier population decay associated with surface-to-bulk transport, which was tracked with a sub-nanometer spatial resolution normal to the surface, and on a femtosecond time scale, in the case of the inorganic CsPbBr₃ lead halide perovskite. The decay time exhibits a pronounced carrier density dependence, which is attributed via modeling to enhanced diffusive transport and concurrent recombination. The transport is found to approach an ordinary diffusive regime, limited by electron-hole scattering, at the highest excitation fluences. This approach constitutes an important milestone in our capability to probe hot-carrier transport at solid interfaces with sub-nanometer resolution in a theoretically and experimentally challenging, yet technologically relevant, high-carrier-density regime.

Generation of wavelength-tunable few-cycle pulses in the mid-infrared at repetition rates up to 10 kHz

We demonstrate a compact and tunable mid-infrared light source that provides carrier-envelope-phase (CEP)-locked pulses at repetition rates from 500 Hz to 10 kHz. The seed pulses were generated by intra-pulse difference frequency mixing of the output of an Yb:KGW regenerative amplifier that had been spectrally broadened by continuum generation using multiple plates. Then, a two-stage optical parametric amplifier was used to obtain output energies of about 100 µJ/pulse for center wavelengths between 2.8 and 3.5 µm. Owing to the intense pulse energies, it was possible to compress the multi-cycle pulses down to two-cycle pulses using YAG and Si plates.
