Dirac Surface States in Magnonic Analogs of Topological Crystalline Insulators

Coupled Electronic and Magnonic Topological States in Two-Dimensional Ferromagnets

Magnetic materials offer a fertile playground for fundamental physics discovery, with not only electronic but also magnonic topological states intensively explored. However, one natural material with both electronic and magnonic nontrivial topologies is still unknown. Here, we demonstrate the coexistence of first-order topological magnon insulators (TMIs) and electronic second-order topological insulators (SOTIs) in 2D honeycomb ferromagnets, giving rise to the nontrivial corner states being connected by the charge-free magnonic edge states. We show that, with C 3 symmetry, the phase factor ± ϕ caused by the next nearest-neighbor Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction breaks the pseudo-spin time-reversal symmetry T , which leads to the split of magnon bands, i.e., the emergence of TMIs with a nonzero Chern number of C = - 1 , in experimentally feasible candidates of MoI3, CrSiTe3, and CrGeTe3 monolayers. Moreover, protected by the C 3 symmetry, the electronic SOTIs characterized by nontrivial corner states are obtained, bridging the topological aspect of fermions and bosons with a high possibility of innovative applications in spintronics devices.

Identifying and Constructing Complex Magnon Band Topology

Magnetically ordered materials tend to support bands of coherent propagating spin wave, or magnon, excitations. Topologically protected surface states of magnons offer a new path toward coherent spin transport for spintronics applications. In this work we explore the variety of topological magnon band structures and provide insight into how to efficiently identify topological magnon bands in materials. We do this by adapting the topological quantum chemistry approach that has used constraints imposed by time reversal and crystalline symmetries to enumerate a large class of topological electronic bands. We show how to identify physically relevant models of gapped magnon band topology by using so-called decomposable elementary band representations, and in turn discuss how to use symmetry data to infer the presence of exotic symmetry enforced nodal topology.

Two-atom-thin topological crystalline insulators lacking out of plane inversion symmetry

A two-dimensional topological crystalline insulator (TCI) with a single unit cell (u.c.) thickness is demonstrated here. To that end, one first shows that tetragonal (C₄in-plane) symmetry is not a necessary condition for the creation of zero-energy metallic surface states on TCI slabs of finite-thicknesses, because zero-energy states persist even as all the in-plane rotational symmetries-furnishing topological protection-are completely removed. In other words, zero-energy levels on the model are not due to (nor are they protected by) topology. Furthermore, effective two-fold energy degeneracies taking place at few discretek-points away from zero energy in the bulk Hamiltonian-that are topologically protected-persist at the u.c. thickness limit. The chiral nature of the bulk TCI Hamiltonian permits creating a2×2square Hamiltonian, whose topological properties remarkably hold invariant at both the bulk and at the single u.c. thickness limits. The identical topological characterization for bulk and u.c.-thick phases is further guaranteed by a calculation involving Pfaffians. This way, a two-atom-thick TCI is deployed hereby, in a demonstration of a topological phase that holds both in the bulk, and in two dimensions.

Tunable Magnonic Chern Bands and Chiral Spin Currents in Magnetic Multilayers

Realization of novel topological phases in magnonic band structures represents a new opportunity for the development of spintronics and magnonics with low power consumption. In this work, we show that in antiparallelly aligned magnetic multilayers, the long-range, chiral dipolar interaction between propagating magnons generates bulk bands with nonzero Chern integers and magnonic surface states carrying chiral spin currents. The surface states are highly localized and can be easily toggled between nontrivial and trivial phases through an external magnetic field. The realization of chiral surface spin currents in this dipolarly coupled heterostructure represents a magnonic implementation of the coupled wire model that has been extensively explored in electronic systems. Our work presents an easy-to-implement system for realizing topological magnonic surface states and low-dissipation spin current transport in a tunable manner.
