High-Order Harmonic Generation and Its Unconventional Scaling Law in the Mott-Insulating Ca_{2}RuO_{4}

Benchmarking Functionals for Strong-Field Light-Matter Interactions in Adiabatic Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

In recent years, time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) has been extensively employed for highly nonlinear optics in molecules and solids, including high harmonic generation (HHG), photoemission, and more. TDDFT exhibits a relatively low numerical cost while still describing both light-matter and electron-electron interactions ab initio, making it highly appealing. However, the majority of implementations of the theory utilize the simplest possible approximations for the exchange-correlation (XC) functional-either the local density or generalized gradient approximations, which are traditionally considered to have rather poor chemical accuracy. We present the first systematic study of the XC functional effect on molecular HHG, testing various levels of theory. Our numerical results suggest justification for using simpler approximations for the XC functional, showing that hybrid and meta functionals (as well as Hartree-Fock) can, at times, lead to poor and unphysical results. The specific source of the failure in more elaborate functionals should be topic of future work, but we hypothesize that its origin might be connected to the adiabatic approximation of TDDFT.

Strong Terahertz Third-Harmonic Generation by Kinetic Heavy Quasiparticles in CaRuO_{3}

We report on time-resolved nonlinear terahertz spectroscopy of a strongly correlated ruthenate, CaRuO_{3}, as a function of temperature, frequency, and terahertz field strength. Third-harmonic radiation for frequencies up to 2.1 THz is observed evidently at low temperatures below 80 K, where the low-frequency linear dynamical response deviates from the Drude model and a coherent heavy quasiparticle band emerges by strong correlations associated with the Hund's coupling. Phenomenologically, by taking an experimentally observed frequency-dependent scattering rate, the deviation of the field driven kinetics from the Drude behavior is reconciled in a time-dependent Boltzmann description, which allows an attribution of the observed third-harmonic generation to the terahertz field driven nonlinear kinetics of the heavy quasiparticles.

Mapping Light-Dressed Floquet Bands by Highly Nonlinear Optical Excitations and Valley Polarization

Ultrafast nonlinear optical phenomena in solids have been attracting a great deal of interest as novel methodologies for the femtosecond spectroscopy of electron dynamics and control of the properties of materials. Here, we theoretically investigate strong-field nonlinear optical transitions in a prototypical two-dimensional material, hBN, and show that the k-resolved conduction band charge occupation patterns induced by an elliptically polarized laser can be understood in a multiphoton resonant picture, but, remarkably, only if using the Floquet light-dressed states instead of the undressed matter states. Our work demonstrates that Floquet dressing affects ultrafast charge dynamics and photoexcitation even from a single pump pulse and establishes a direct measurable signature for band dressing in nonlinear optical processes in solids, opening new paths for ultrafast spectroscopy and valley manipulation.

Following the Nonthermal Phase Transition in Niobium Dioxide by Time-Resolved Harmonic Spectroscopy

Photoinduced phase transitions in correlated materials promise diverse applications from ultrafast switches to optoelectronics. Resolving those transitions and possible metastable phases temporally are key enablers for these applications, but challenge existing experimental approaches. Extreme nonlinear optics can help probe phase changes, as higher-order nonlinearities have higher sensitivity and temporal resolution to band structure and lattice deformations. Here the ultrafast transition from the semiconducting to the metallic phases in polycrystalline thin-film NbO_{2} is investigated by time-resolved harmonic spectroscopy. The emission strength of all harmonic orders shows a steplike suppression when the excitation fluence exceeds a threshold (∼11-12  mJ/cm^{2}), below the fluence required for the thermal transition-a signature of the nonthermal emergence of a metallic phase within 100±20  fs. This observation is backed by full ab initio simulations as well as a 1D chain model of high-harmonic generation from both phases. Our results demonstrate femtosecond harmonic probing of phase transitions and nonthermal dynamics in solids.

Anomalous Temperature Dependence of High-Harmonic Generation in Mott Insulators

We reveal the crucial effect of strong spin-charge coupling on high-harmonic generation (HHG) in Mott insulators. In a system with antiferromagnetic correlations, the HHG signal is drastically enhanced with decreasing temperature, even though the gap increases and the production of charge carriers is suppressed. This anomalous behavior, which has also been observed in recent HHG experiments on Ca_{2}RuO_{4}, originates from a cooperative effect between the spin-charge coupling and the thermal ensemble, as well as the strongly temperature-dependent coherence between charge carriers. We argue that the peculiar temperature dependence of HHG is a generic feature of Mott insulators, which can be controlled via the Coulomb interaction and dimensionality of the system. Our results demonstrate that correlations between different degrees of freedom, which are a characteristic feature of strongly correlated solids, have significant and nontrivial effects on nonlinear optical responses.
