Time-dependent collective diffusion of colloidal particles

Wavenumber-dependent dynamic light scattering optical coherence tomography measurements of collective and self-diffusion

We demonstrate wavenumber-dependent DLS-OCT measurements of collective and self-diffusion coefficients in concentrated silica suspensions across a broad q-range, utilizing a custom home-built OCT system. Depending on the sample polydispersity, either the collective or self-diffusion is measured. The measured collective-diffusion coefficient shows excellent agreement with hard-sphere theory and serves as an effective tool for accurately determining particle sizes. We employ the decoupling approximation for simultaneously measuring collective and self-diffusion coefficients, even in sufficiently monodisperse suspensions, using a high-speed Thorlabs OCT system. This enables particle size and volume fraction determination without the necessity of wavenumber-dependent measurements. We derive a relationship between the particle number-based polydispersity index and the ratio of self and collective mode amplitudes in the autocorrelation function and utilize it to measure the particle number-based polydispersity index. Notably, the polydispersity determined in this manner demonstrates improved sensitivity to smaller particle sizes compared to the standard intensity-based DLS cumulant analysis performed on dilute samples.

Out-of-equilibrium interactions and collective locomotion of colloidal spheres with squirming of nematoelastic multipoles

Many living and artificial systems show similar emergent behavior and collective motions on different scales, starting from swarms of bacteria to synthetic active particles, herds of mammals, and crowds of people. What all these systems often have in common is that new collective properties like flocking emerge from interactions between individual self-propelled or driven units. Such systems are naturally out-of-equilibrium and propel at the expense of consumed energy. Mimicking nature by making self-propelled or externally driven particles and studying their individual and collective motility may allow for deeper understanding of physical underpinnings behind collective motion of large groups of interacting objects or beings. Here, using a soft matter system of colloids immersed into a liquid crystal, we show that resulting so-called nematoelastic multipoles can be set into a bidirectional locomotion by external oscillating electric fields. Out-of-equilibrium elastic interactions between such colloidal objects lead to collective flock-like behaviors emerging from time-varying elasticity-mediated interactions between externally driven propelling particles. Repulsive elastic interactions in the equilibrium state can be turned into attractive interactions in the out-of-equilibrium state under applied external electric fields. We probe this behavior at different number densities of colloidal particles and show that particles in dense dispersions collectively select the same direction of a coherent motion due to elastic interactions between near neighbors. In our experimentally implemented design, their motion is highly ordered and without clustering or jamming often present in other colloidal transport systems, which is promising for technological and fundamental-science applications, like nano-cargo transport, out-of-equilibrium assembly, and microrobotics.

Few-body hydrodynamic interactions probed by optical trap pulling experiment

We study the hydrodynamic coupling of neighboring micro-beads placed in a multiple optical trap setup allowing us to precisely control the degree of coupling and directly measure time-dependent trajectories of entrained beads. We performed measurements on configurations with increasing complexity starting with a pair of entrained beads moving in one dimension, then in two dimensions, and finally a triplet of beads moving in two dimensions. The average experimental trajectories of a probe bead compare well with the theoretical computation, illustrating the role of viscous coupling and setting timescales for probe bead relaxation. The findings also provide direct experimental corroborations of hydrodynamic coupling at large, micrometer spatial scales and long, millisecond timescales, of relevance to, e.g., microfluidic device design and hydrodynamic-assisted colloidal assembly, improving the capability of optical tweezers, and understanding the coupling between micrometer-scale objects within a living cell.

Diffusing wave microrheology of highly scattering concentrated monodisperse emulsions

Motivated by improvements in diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS) for nonergodic, highly optically scattering soft matter and by cursory treatment of collective scattering effects in prior DWS microrheology experiments, we investigate the low-frequency plateau elastic shear moduli [Formula: see text] of concentrated, monodisperse, disordered oil-in-water emulsions as droplets jam. In such experiments, the droplets play dual roles both as optical probes and as the jammed objects that impart shear elasticity. Here, we demonstrate that collective scattering significantly affects DWS mean-square displacements (MSDs) in dense colloidal emulsions. By measuring and analyzing the scattering mean free path as a function of droplet volume fraction φ, we obtain a φ-dependent average structure factor. We use this to correct DWS MSDs by up to a factor of 4 and then calculate [Formula: see text] predicted by the generalized Stokes-Einstein relation. We show that DWS-microrheological [Formula: see text] agrees well with mechanically measured [Formula: see text] over about three orders of magnitude when droplets are jammed but only weakly deformed. Moreover, both of these measurements are consistent with predictions of an entropic-electrostatic-interfacial (EEI) model, based on quasi-equilibrium free-energy minimization of disordered, screened-charge-stabilized, deformable droplets, which accurately describes prior mechanical measurements of [Formula: see text] made on similar disordered monodisperse emulsions over a wide range of droplet radii and φ. This very good quantitative agreement between DWS microrheology, mechanical rheometry, and the EEI model provides a comprehensive and self-consistent view of weakly jammed emulsions. Extensions of this approach may improve DWS microrheology on other systems of dense, jammed colloids that are highly scattering.

Time-fractional characterization of brine reaction and precipitation in porous media

Brine reaction and precipitation in porous media sometimes occur in the presence of a strong fluid flowing field, which induces the mobilization of the precipitated salts and distorts their spatial distribution. It is interesting to investigate how the distribution responds to such mobilization. We view these precipitates as random walkers in the complex inner space of the porous media, where they make stochastic jumps among locations and possibly wait between successive transitions. In consideration of related experimental results, the waiting time of the precipitates at a particular position is allowed to range widely from short sojourn to permanent residence. Through the model of a continuous-time random walk, a class of time-fractional equations for the precipitate's concentration profile is derived, including that in the Riemann-Liouville formalism and the Prabhakar formalism. The solutions to these equations show the general pattern of the precipitate's spatiotemporal evolution: a coupling of mass accumulation and mass transport. And the degree to which the mass is mobilized turns out to be monotonically correlated to the fractional exponent α. Moreover, to keep the completeness of the model, we further discuss how the interaction among the precipitates influences the precipitation process. In doing so, a time-fractional non-linear Fokker-Planck equation with source term is introduced and solved. It is shown that the interaction among the precipitates slightly perturbs their spatial distribution. This distribution is largely dominated by the brine reaction itself and the interaction between the precipitates and the porous media.

Spatial propagation of protein polymerization

We consider the spatial dependence of filamentous protein self-assembly. Through studying the cases where the spreading of aggregated material is dominated either by diffusion or by growth, we derive analytical results for the spatial evolution of filamentous protein aggregation, which we validate against Monte Carlo simulations. Moreover, we compare the predictions of our theory with experimental measurements of two systems for which we identify the propagation as either growth or diffusion controlled. Our results connect the macroscopic observables that characterize the spatial propagation of protein self-assembly with the underlying microscopic processes and provide physical limits on spatial propagation and prionlike behavior associated with protein aggregation.

Translational and rotational dynamics of colloidal particles in suspension: effect of shear

We report a generalization of a nonequilibrium thermodynamic theory for the mesoscopic dynamics of radially symmetric interacting particles to anisotropic pairwise interactions and attain the one- and two-particle Fokker-Planck kinetics equations at a low-density limit that provides the translational-rotational coupling of their motion due to hydrodynamic interactions, from which we derived the balance equations of linear, angular momentum, and energy dissipation due to particle interactions and energy interchange with heat bath. In this low-density approximation, an already-known virial expression for the long-time translational collective diffusion coefficient of an orientational isotropic suspension in terms of the fluid equilibrium microstructure is recovered. An external shear flow induces, in the diffusive regime, vorticity effects into the rotational diffusion property of the colloidal particles. They manifest in the appearance of the particle's rotational viscosity due to vortex flow. The Smoluchowski equation that governs the dynamical relaxation of colloid microstructure due to particle's Brownian motion under stationary flow is provided.

Self-mixing thin-slice solid-state laser metrology

This paper reviews the dynamic effect of thin-slice solid-state lasers subjected to frequency-shifted optical feedback, which led to the discovery of the self-mixing modulation effect, and its applications to quantum-noise-limited versatile laser metrology systems with extreme optical sensitivity.

Effect of counterion binding efficiency on structure and dynamics of wormlike micelles

We have studied the effect of counterion binding efficiency on the linear viscoelastic properties of wormlike micelles formed from hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in the presence of different nonpenetrating inorganic salts: potassium bromide (KBr), sodium nitrate (NaNO(3)), and sodium chlorate (NaClO(3)). We have varied the salt/surfactant ratio R at fixed surfactant concentration of 350 mM. Results are compared to data for the system cetylpyridinium chloride (CPyCl) and the penetrating counterion sodium salicylate (NaSal) (Oelschlaeger, C.; Schopferer, M.; Scheffold, F.; Willenbacher, N. Langmuir 2009, 25, 716-723). Mechanical high-frequency rheology and diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS) based tracer microrheology are used to determine the shear moduli G' and G'' in the frequency range from 0.1 Hz up to 1 MHz (Willenbacher, N.; Oelschlaeger, C.; Schopferer, M.; Fischer, P.; Cardinaux, F.; Scheffold, F. Phys. Rev. Lett. 2007, 99, 068302, 1-4). This enables us to determine the plateau modulus G(0), which is related to the cross-link density or mesh size of the entanglement network, the bending stiffness kappa (also expressed as persistence length l(p) = kappa/k(B)T) corresponding to the semiflexible nature of the micelles, and the scission energy E(sciss), which is related to their contour length. The viscosity maximum shifts to higher R values, and the variation of viscosity with R is less pronounced as the binding strength decreases. The plateau modulus increases with R at low ionic strength and is constant around the viscosity maximum; the increase in G(0) at high R, which is presumably due to branching, is weak compared to the system with penetrating counterion. The scission energy E(sciss) approximately = 20 k(B)T is independent of counterion binding efficiency irrespective of R and is slightly higher compared to the system CPyCl/NaSal, indicating that branching may be significant already at the viscosity maximum in this latter case. The micellar flexibility increases with increasing binding efficiency of counterions according to the Hofmeister series. The persistence length values for systems CTAB/KBr, CTAB/NaNO(3), and CTAB/NaClO(3) are 40, 34, and 29 nm, respectively, independent of R, and are significantly higher than in the case of CPyCl/NaSal.

Linear-to-branched micelles transition: a rheometry and diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS) study

The frequency-dependent shear modulus of aqueous wormlike micellar solutions of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPyCl) and sodium salicylate (NaSal) has been measured over a broad frequency range from 10(-2) to 10(6) rad/s using diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS) based tracer microrheology as well as mechanical techniques including rotational rheometry and oscillatory squeeze flow. Good agreement between mechanical and optical techniques is found in the frequency range from 10(-1) to 10(5) rad/s (Willenbacher, N.; Oelschlaeger, C.; Schopferer, M.; Fischer, P.; Cardinaux, F.; Scheffold, F. Phys. Rev. Lett. 2007, 99 (6), 068302). At intermediate frequencies between 10 and 10(4) rad/s, squeeze flow provides most accurate data and is used to determine the plateau modulus G(0), which is related to the cross-link density or mesh size of the entanglement network, as well as the scission energy E(sciss), which is deduced from the temperature dependence of the shear moduli in the plateau zone. In the frequency range above 10(4) rad/s, DWS including a new inertia correction is most reliable and is used to determine the persistence length l(p). The system CPyCl/NaSal is known to exhibit two maxima in zero-shear viscosity and terminal relaxation time as the salt/surfactant ratio R is varied (Rehage, H.; Hoffman, H. J. Phys. Chem. 1988, 92 (16), 4712-4719). The first maximum is attributed to a transition from linear to branched micelles (Lequeux, F. Europhys. Lett. 1992, 19 (8), 675-681), and the second one is accompanied by a charge reversal due to strongly binding counterions. Here, we discuss the variation of G(0), E(sciss), and l(p) with salt/surfactant ratio R at constant surfactant concentration of 100 mM CPyCl. G(0) increases at the linear-to-branched micelles transition, and this is attributed to the additional contribution of branching points to the cross-link density. E(sciss) exhibits two maxima analogous to the zero-shear viscosity, which can be understood in terms of the variation of micellar length and variation of the amount of branched micelles and contour length between branching points consistent with the results of a comprehensive cryo-transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study (Abezgauz, L.; Ramon, O.; Danino, D. Department of Biotechnology and Food Engineering, Technion, Haifa, Israel. European Colloid and Interface Society, Geneva, 2007). The persistence length decreases with increasing R. This decrease is stronger than expected from the decrease of Debye length according to the Odijk-Skolnick-Fixman (OSF) theory and is attributed to the penetration of salicylate ions into the micelles; the linear-to-branched transition obviously does not have an effect on l(p).

Broad bandwidth optical and mechanical rheometry of wormlike micelle solutions

We characterize the linear viscoelastic shear properties of an aqueous wormlike micellar solution using diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS) based tracer microrheology as well as various mechanical techniques such as rotational rheometry, oscillatory squeeze flow, and torsional resonance oscillation covering the frequency range from 10(-1) to 10(6) rad/s. Since DWS as well as mechanical oscillatory squeeze flow and torsional resonance oscillation cover a sufficiently high frequency range, the persistence length of wormlike micelles could be determined directly from rheological measurements for the first time.

Anticipating colloidal instabilities in cationic vesicle dispersions by measuring collective motions with dynamic light scattering

Vesicle dispersions are useful for many applications from medicinal to consumer products. However, using these dispersions requires some knowledge of and control over their colloidal properties. Measuring interparticle interactions between vesicles should allow framing the problem in terms of Smoluchowski kinetic models and consequently anticipating time-dependent aggregation and coalescence for the dispersions. However, this can be a difficult task for many complex mixtures. A primary goal of this paper is to show that it is possible to measure interparticle potential between small vesicles by measuring the concentration-dependent collective motion using dynamic light scattering. These measurements allow determination of the second virial coefficient for the dispersion, providing a convenient platform for summing all contributions to the interaction potential over all vesicle conformations, thus making the analysis of complex mixtures more tractable. As a verification of the approach, a comparison is made to dispersions in which the stability is governed solely by electrostatics, using existing techniques to anticipate instabilities. A second goal of this paper is to build a simple potential model in which the Smoluchowski model can be used to quantitatively anticipate the aggregation behavior of the small vesicle dispersion. Together, these observations constitute a convenient approach to anticipating the behavior of vesicle (and other) dispersions in complex mixtures.

Lattice-Boltzmann simulations of the dynamics of polymer solutions in periodic and confined geometries

A numerical method to simulate the dynamics of polymer solutions in confined geometries has been implemented and tested. The method combines a fluctuating lattice-Boltzmann model of the solvent [Ladd, Phys. Rev. Lett. 70, 1339 (1993)] with a point-particle model of the polymer chains. A friction term couples the monomers to the fluid [Ahlrichs and Dunweg, J. Chem. Phys. 111, 8225 (1999)], providing both the hydrodynamic interactions between the monomers and the correlated random forces. The coupled equations for particles and fluid are solved on an inertial time scale, which proves to be surprisingly simple and efficient, avoiding the costly linear algebra associated with Brownian dynamics. Complex confined geometries can be represented by a straightforward mapping of the boundary surfaces onto a regular three-dimensional grid. The hydrodynamic interactions between monomers are shown to compare well with solutions of the Stokes equations down to distances of the order of the grid spacing. Numerical results are presented for the radius of gyration, end-to-end distance, and diffusion coefficient of an isolated polymer chain, ranging from 16 to 1024 monomers in length. The simulations are in excellent agreement with renormalization group calculations for an excluded volume chain. We show that hydrodynamic interactions in large polymers can be systematically coarse-grained to substantially reduce the computational cost of the simulation. Finally, we examine the effects of confinement and flow on the polymer distribution and diffusion constant in a narrow channel. Our results support the qualitative conclusions of recent Brownian dynamics simulations of confined polymers [Jendrejack et al., J. Chem. Phys. 119, 1165 (2003) and Jendrejack et al., J. Chem. Phys. 120, 2513 (2004)].

Lubrication corrections for lattice-Boltzmann simulations of particle suspensions

The lattice-Boltzmann method has been refined to take account of near-contact interactions between spherical particles. First, we describe a comprehensive solution to the technical problems that arise when two discretized surfaces come into contact. Second, we describe how to incorporate lubrication forces and torques into lattice-Boltzmann simulations, and test our method by calculating the forces and torques between a spherical particle and a plane wall. Third, we describe an efficient update of the particle velocities, taking into account the possibility that some of the differential equations are stiff.

Diffusing wave spectroscopy and small-angle neutron scattering from concentrated colloidal suspensions

We have studied the properties of dense colloidal suspensions with a combination of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS). Contrary to single light scattering, DWS provides dynamic information on length scales, from 1 to 100 nm, comparable to SANS. This offers a unique range of accessible length and time scales perfectly suited for the (noninvasive) investigation of highly concentrated systems. By this we obtain valuable information about the structural properties and the short-time diffusion of electrostatically stabilized, but strongly screened, hard-sphere-like colloidal suspensions with volume fractions up to 30%. We furthermore discuss the consequences of local structural ordering on the optical properties, such as optical density and polarization. Quantitative agreement is found when comparing transmission measurements (optical density) with parameter-free numerical calculations based on the structural characterization from SANS.

Propagation of hydrodynamic interactions in colloidal suspensions

We describe direct measurements of the dynamics of two colloidal spheres before hydrodynamic interactions have had time to fully develop. We find that the dynamics of the two spheres are coupled at times significantly shorter than tau(nu), the time required for vorticity to diffuse between the two spheres. From the distance dependence of the measured coupling, we infer that hydrodynamic interactions develop in a sonic time scale.

Short-time dynamics of colloidal particles confined between two walls

The short-time dynamics of colloidal particles in a quasi-two-dimensional geometry is studied by digital video microscopy. The particles (polystyrene spheres) are suspended in water and confined between two parallel glass plates, forming an effective two-dimensional system. The (effective) two-dimensional van Hove function G(r,t) and its self and distinct part are measured with a time resolution of 1/30 s. We found that the general behavior of these time-correlation functions (and their Fourier transforms) is quite similar to that of their three-dimensional counterparts. The effects of the strong hydrodynamic coupling of the particles motion to the walls and that due to the hydrodynamic interactions between particles are contained in the (effective) hydrodynamic function H(k) obtained from the initial slope of F(k,t) [the Fourier transform of G(r,t)]. We found that H(k), as a function of the wave vector k and particle concentration, exhibits a similar qualitative behavior to the hydrodynamic function in homogeneous three-dimensional suspensions of hard spheres. We also found in our systems that the particle fluctuations relax only by self-diffusion for wave vectors where the static structure factor S(k)=1. This result is important for measurements of self-diffusion dynamics in three-dimensional systems by light scattering techniques.

Using optics to measure biological forces and mechanics

Spanning all size levels, regulating biological forces and transport are fundamental life processes. Used by various investigators over the last dozen years, optical techniques offer unique advantages for studying biological forces. The most mature of these techniques, optical tweezers, or the single-beam optical trap, is commercially available and is used by numerous investigators. Although technical innovations have improved the versatility of optical tweezers, simple optical tweezers continue to provide insights into cell biology. Two new, promising optical technologies, laser-tracking microrheology and the optical stretcher, allow mechanical measurements that are not possible with optical tweezers. Here, I review these various optical technologies and their roles in understanding mechanical forces in cell biology.

Hydrodynamic interactions in quasi-two-dimensional colloidal suspensions

The effects of the hydrodynamic interactions on the short-time dynamics of colloidal, hard-sphere-like particles confined between two parallel walls are measured by digital videomicroscopy. We find that such effects can be described in terms of an effective two-dimensional hydrodynamic function H(k), defined as a straightforward adaptation to two dimensions of the corresponding object describing collective dynamics for the three-dimensional (3D) suspensions. Interestingly, the behavior of H(k) is qualitatively similar to the hydrodynamic function of 3D suspensions of hard spheres. We also found that for values of k where the static structure factor is 1, the dynamics is determined only by self-diffusion.

The mechanics of F-actin microenvironments depend on the chemistry of probing surfaces

To understand the microscopic mechanical properties of actin networks, we monitor the motion of embedded particles with controlled surface properties. The highly resolved Brownian motions of these particles reveal the viscoelastic character of the microenvironments around them. In both non-cross-linked and highly cross-linked actin networks, particles that bind F-actin report viscoelastic moduli comparable to those determined by macroscopic rheology experiments. By contrast, particles modified to prevent actin binding have weak microenvironments that are surprisingly insensitive to the introduction of filament cross-links. Even when adjacent in the same cross-linked gel, actin-binding and nonbinding particles report viscoelastic moduli that differ by two orders of magnitude at low frequencies (0.5-1.5 rad/s) but converge at high frequencies (> 10(4) rad/s). For all particle chemistries, electron and light microscopies show no F-actin recruitment or depletion, so F-actin microheterogeneities cannot explain the deep penetration (approximately 100 nm) of nonbinding particles. Instead, we hypothesize that a local depletion of cross-linking around nonbinding particles explains the phenomena. With implications for organelle mobility in cells, our results show that actin binding is required for microenvironments to reflect macroscopic properties, and conversely, releasing actin enhances particle mobility beyond the effects of mere biochemical untethering.

Structure and dynamics of concentrated dispersions of polystyrene latex spheres in glycerol: static and dynamic x-ray scattering

X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy and small-angle x-ray scattering measurements are applied to characterize the dynamics and structure of concentrated suspensions of charge-stabilized polystyrene latex spheres dispersed in glycerol, for volume fractions between 2.7% and 52%. The static structures of the suspensions show essentially hard-sphere behavior. The short-time dynamics shows good agreement with predictions for the wave-vector-dependent collective diffusion coefficient, which are based on a hard-sphere model [C. W. J. Beenakker and P. Mazur, Physica A 126, 349 (1984)]. However, the intermediate scattering function is found to violate a scaling behavior found previously for a sterically stabilized hard-sphere suspension [P. N. Segre and P. N. Pusey, Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 771 (1996)]. Our measurements are parametrized in terms of a viscoelastic model for the intermediate scattering function [W. Hess and R. Klein, Adv. Phys. 32, 173 (1983)]. Within this framework, two relaxation modes are predicted to contribute to the decay of the dynamic structure factor, with mode amplitudes depending on both wave vector and volume fraction. Our measurements indicate that, for particle volume fractions smaller than about 0.30, the intermediate scattering function is well described in terms of single-exponential decays, whereas a double-mode structure becomes apparent for more concentrated systems.
