Joys and pitfalls of fermi surface mapping in Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+delta) using angle resolved photoemission

Coherent organization of electronic correlations as a mechanism to enhance and stabilize high-T C cuprate superconductivity

Strong diffusive or incoherent electronic correlations are the signature of the strange-metal normal state of the cuprate superconductors, with these correlations considered to be undressed or removed in the superconducting state. A critical question is if these correlations are responsible for the high-temperature superconductivity. Here, utilizing a development in the analysis of angle-resolved photoemission data, we show that the strange-metal correlations don't simply disappear in the superconducting state, but are instead converted into a strongly renormalized coherent state, with stronger normal state correlations leading to stronger superconducting state renormalization. This conversion begins well above T C at the onset of superconducting fluctuations and it greatly increases the number of states that can pair. Therefore, there is positive feedback--the superconductive pairing creates the conversion that in turn strengthens the pairing. Although such positive feedback should enhance a conventional pairing mechanism, it could potentially also sustain an electronic pairing mechanism.

Anomalous Fermi-surface dependent pairing in a self-doped high-Tc superconductor

We report the discovery of a self-doped multilayer high Tc superconductor Ba2Ca3Cu4O8F2 (F0234) which contains distinctly different superconducting gap magnitudes along its two Fermi-surface sheets. While formal valence counting would imply this material to be an undoped insulator, it is a self-doped superconductor with a Tc of 60 K, possessing simultaneously both electron- and hole-doped Fermi-surface sheets. Intriguingly, the Fermi-surface sheet characterized by the much larger gap is the electron-doped one, which has a shape disfavoring two electronic features considered to be important for the pairing mechanism: the van Hove singularity and the antiferromagnetic (pi/a, pi/a) scattering.

Experimental proof of a structural origin for the shadow fermi surface of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta

By combining surprising new results from a full polarization analysis of nodal angle-resolved photoemission data from pristine and modulation-free Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+delta) with structural information from LEED and ab initio one-step photoemission simulations, we prove that the shadow Fermi surface in these systems is of structural origin, being due to orthorhombic distortions from tetragonal symmetry present both in surface and bulk. Consequently, one of the longest standing open issues in the investigation of the Fermi surface of these widely studied systems finally meets its resolution.

Origin of the peak-dip-hump line shape in the superconducting-state (pi,0) photoemission spectra of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8

From detailed high-resolution measurements of the photon energy dependence of the (pi,0) superconducting-state photoemission spectrum of the bilayer Bi high-temperature superconductors, we show that the famous peak-dip-hump line shape is dominated by a superposition of spectral features originating from different electronic states which reside at different binding energies, but are each describable by essentially identical single-particle spectral functions. The previously identified bilayer-split CuO2 bands are the culprit: with the "superconducting" peak being due to the antibonding band, while the hump is mainly formed by its bonding bilayer-split counterpart.

Doubling of the bands in overdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+delta): evidence for c-axis bilayer coupling

We present high resolution angle resolved photoemission data of the bilayer superconductor Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+delta) (Bi2212) showing a clear doubling of the near E(F) bands. This splitting approaches zero along the (0,0)-->(pi,pi) nodal line and is not observed in single layer Bi(2)Sr(2)CuO(6+delta) (Bi2201), indicating that the splitting is due to the long sought after bilayer splitting effect. The splitting has a magnitude of approximately 75 meV near the middle of the zone, extrapolating to about 110 meV near the (pi,0) point. The existence of these two bands also helps to clear up the recent controversy concerning the topology of the Fermi surface.

Band-structure trend in hole-doped cuprates and correlation with T(c max)

By calculation and analysis of the bare conduction bands in a large number of hole-doped high-temperature superconductors, we have identified the range of the intralayer hopping as the essential, material-dependent parameter. It is controlled by the energy of the axial orbital, a hybrid between Cu 4s, apical-oxygen 2p(z), and farther orbitals. Materials with higher T(c max) have larger hopping ranges and axial orbitals more localized in the CuO2 layers.

Nesting induced precursor effects: a renormalization group approach

We develop a controlled weak coupling renormalization group (RG) approach to itinerant electrons. Within this formalism we rederive the phase diagram for two-dimensional non-nested systems. We then study how nesting modifies this phase diagram. We show that competition between particle-particle and particle-hole channels leads to the manifestation of an unstable precursor fixed point in the RG flow. This effect should be experimentally measurable, and may be relevant for an explanation of pseudogaps in the high temperature superconductors, as a crossover phenomenon.

Observation of d(x2-y2)-like superconducting gap in an electron-doped high-temperature superconductor

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of the electron-doped high-temperature superconductor Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO4 (x = 0.15, transition temperature T(c) = 22 K) has found the quasiparticle signature as well as the anisotropic d(x2-y2)-like superconducting gap. The spectral line shape at the superconducting state shows a strong anisotropic nature of the many-body interaction. The result suggests that the electron-hole symmetry is present in the high-temperature superconductors.
