Mesoscopic Kondo screening effect in a single-electron transistor embedded in a metallic ring

Effective projection theory in a correlated electron system

We propose an efficient method for nonperturbative calculation of Green's function in a correlated electron system. The key idea of the method is to project out irrelevant operators having zero norm in the ground state, which we refer to as effective projection theory. We apply the method to a mesoscopic Anderson model and show that for a given wavefunction ansatz, equations of motion can be closed only by relevant operators, allowing easy calculation of the zero-temperature Green's function. It turns out that the resulting Green's functions reproduce exact limits of both weak and strong interactions. The accuracy is also verified for small systems by comparison with exact diagonalization results, revealing that effective projection theory captures the essential correlated features in the entire regime of interactions.

Kondo quantum dots and the novel Kondo-doublet interaction

We analyze the interactions between two Kondo quantum dots connected to a Rashba-active quantum wire. We find that the Kondo-doublet interaction, at an interdot distance of the order of the wire Fermi length, is over an order of magnitude greater than the RKKY interaction. The effects induced on the Kondo-doublet interaction by the wire spin-orbit coupling can be used to control the quantum dots spin-spin correlation. These results imply that the widely used assumption that the RKKY is the dominant interaction between Anderson impurities must be revised.

Kondo screening cloud around a quantum dot: large-scale numerical results

Measurements of the persistent current in a ring containing a quantum dot would afford a unique opportunity to finally detect the elusive Kondo screening cloud. We present the first large-scale numerical results on this controversial subject using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group (RG). These extremely challenging numerical calculations confirm RG arguments for weak to strong coupling crossover with varying ring length and give results on the universal scaling functions. We also study, analytically and numerically, the important and surprising effects of particle-hole symmetry breaking.
