Echo speckle imaging of dynamic processes in soft materials

We present a laser-speckle imaging technique, termed Echo speckle imaging (ESI), that quantifies the local dynamics in biological tissue and soft materials with a noise level around or below 10% of the measured signal without affecting the spatial resolution. We achieve this through an unconventional speckle beam illumination that creates changing, statistically independent illumination conditions and substantially increases the measurement accuracy. Control experiments for dynamically homogeneous and heterogeneous soft materials and tissue phantoms illustrate the performance of the method. We show that this approach enables us to precision-monitor purely dynamic heterogeneities in turbid soft media with a lateral resolution of 100 µm and better.

Observation of intensity statistics of light transmitted through 3D random media

We experimentally observe the spatial intensity statistics of light transmitted through three-dimensional (3D) isotropic scattering media. The intensity distributions measured through layers consisting of zinc oxide nanoparticles differ significantly from the usual Rayleigh statistics associated with speckle and instead are in agreement with the predictions of mesoscopic transport theory, taking into account the known material parameters of the samples. Consistent with the measured spatial intensity fluctuations, the total transmission fluctuates. The magnitude of the fluctuations in the total transmission is smaller than expected on the basis of quasi-one-dimensional (1D) transport theory, which indicates that quasi-1D theories cannot fully describe these open 3D media.

Observation of spatial quantum correlations induced by multiple scattering of nonclassical light

We present the experimental realization of spatial quantum correlations of photons that are induced by multiple scattering of squeezed light. The quantum correlation relates photons propagating along two different light paths through the random medium and is infinite in range. Both positive and negative spatial quantum correlations are observed when varying the quantum state incident to the multiple scattering medium, and the strength of the correlations is controlled by the number of photons. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with recent theoretical proposals by implementing the full quantum model of multiple scattering.

Coherence loss in light backscattering by random media with nanoscale nonuniformities

An experimental technique for measuring time-resolved coherence loss and destruction of backscattered wave packets in random media is described. The results of such measurements, performed with a modified Michelson interferometer, contain rich information about the characteristics of media nonuniformities. Experimental data for model nanosuspensions are compared with theoretical expressions developed in the paper which include the effects of Mie-type resonant scattering. We attribute one such observed effect to enhanced ineleastic optical transitions near the surface of nonmetallic nanoparticles. The inverse problem of characterization of multiscattering random media by backscattering is also considered.
