Reducing calibration time in motor imagery-based BCIs by data alignment and empirical mode decomposition

One of the major reasons that limit the practical applications of a brain-computer interface (BCI) is its long calibration time. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to reducing the calibration time of motor imagery (MI)-based BCIs without sacrificing classification accuracy. The approach aims to augment the training set size of a new subject by generating artificial electroencephalogram (EEG) data from a few training trials initially available. The artificial EEG data are obtained by first performing empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and then mixing resulting intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). The original training trials are aligned to common reference point with Euclidean alignment (EA) method prior to EMD and pooled together with artificial trials as the expended training set, which is input into a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classifier or a logistic regression (LR) classifier. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated on two motor imagery (MI) data sets and compared with that of the algorithm trained with only real EEG data (Baseline) and the algorithm trained with expanded EEG data by EMD without data alignment. The experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the amount of training data needed to achieve a given performance level and thus is expected to facilitate the real-world applications of MI-based BCIs.

Wrist pulse diagnosis of stable coronary heart disease based on acoustics waveforms

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

As a common pathological pulse, unsmooth pulse has important diagnostic value in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In modern pulse diagnosis, unsmooth pulse plays an important role in the diagnosis of disease location and nature, but there are few studies on it. In this paper, a pulse diagnosis approach based on acoustic waveforms was proposed, the wrist pulse was divided into five layers vertically for the first time. Five layers acoustic waves of the radial artery in stable coronary heart disease (CHD) patients and relatively healthy people were compared to explore whether there are abnormal changes in acoustic pulse in stable CHD patients.

METHODS

The acoustic features of unsmooth pulse in patients with stable CHD were analyzed in time domain, frequency domain and empirical mode decomposition, combined with shannon entropy and multi-scale entropy. Sixteen pulse characteristics were discovered, and one-way analysis of variance were performed. The characteristics of the two groups were tested by T test. 13 features were used to identify patients with stable CHD by support vector machine (SVM).

RESULTS

Compared to healthy people, all parameters of the third layer of the stable CHD left Cun pulse were significantly different from those of the healthy people. The identification rates of the fourth and third layer of the left Cun pulse were the first (90.79%) and the second (88.16%), respectively.

CONCLUSION

Abnormal acoustic pulse appeared in the radial artery in patients with stable CHD. According to these changes, patients with stable CHD can be effectively identified from the perspective of pulse.

Characterization of Bimanual Cyclical Tasks from Single-trial EEG-fNIRS Measurements

Robot-assisted bimanual training is promising to improve motor function and cortical reorganization for hemiparetic stroke patients. Closing the rehabilitation training loop with neurofeedback can help refine training protocols in time for better engagements and outcomes. However, due to the low signal-to- noise ratio (SNR) and non-stationary properties of neural signals, reliable characterization of bimanual training-induced neural activities from single-trial measurement is challenging. In this study, ten human participants were recruited conducting robot-assisted bimanual cyclical tasks (in-phase, 90° out-of-phase, and anti-phase) when concurrent electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) were recorded. A unified EEG-fNIRS bimodal signal processing framework was proposed to characterize neural activities induced by three types of bimanual cyclical tasks. In this framework, novel artifact removal methods were used to improve the SNR and the task-related component analysis (TRCA) was introduced to increase the reproducibility of EEG-fNIRS bimodal features. The optimized features were transformed into low-dimensional indicators to reliably characterize bimanual training-induced neural activation. The SVM classification results of three bimanual cyclical tasks revealed a good discrimination ability of EEG-fNIRS bimodal indicators (90.1%), which was higher than that using EEG (74.8%) or fNIRS (82.2%) alone, supporting the proposed method as a feasible technique to characterize neural activities during robot-assisted bimanual training.

Motor imagery EEG classification based on ensemble support vector learning

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Brain-computer interfaces build a communication pathway from the human brain to a computer. Motor imagery-based electroencephalogram (EEG) classification is a widely applied paradigm in brain-computer interfaces. The common spatial pattern, based on the event-related desynchronization (ERD)/event-related synchronization (ERS) phenomenon, is one of the most popular algorithms for motor imagery-based EEG classification. Moreover, the spatiotemporal discrepancy feature based on the event-related potential phenomenon has been demonstrated to provide complementary information to ERD/ERS-based features. In this paper, aiming to improve the performance of motor imagery-based EEG classification in a few-channel situation, an ensemble support vector learning (ESVL)-based approach is proposed to combine the advantages of the ERD/ERS-based features and the event-related potential-based features in motor imagery-based EEG classification.

METHODS

ESVL is an ensemble learning algorithm based on support vector machine classifier. Specifically, the decision boundary with the largest interclass margin is obtained using the support vector machine algorithm, and the distances between sample points and the decision boundary are mapped to posterior probabilities. The probabilities obtained from different support vector machine classifiers are combined to make prediction. Thus, ESVL leverages the advantages of multiple trained support vector machine classifiers and makes a better prediction based on the posterior probabilities. The class discrepancy-guided sub-band-based common spatial pattern and the spatiotemporal discrepancy feature are applied to extract discriminative features, and then, the extracted features are used to train the ESVL classifier and make predictions.

RESULTS

The BCI Competition IV datasets 2a and 2b are employed to evaluate the performance of the proposed ESVL algorithm. Experimental comparisons with the state-of-the-art methods are performed, and the proposed ESVL-based approach achieves an average max kappa value of 0.60 and 0.71 on BCI Competition IV datasets 2a and 2b respectively. The results show that the proposed ESVL-based approach improves the performance of motor imagery-based brain-computer interfaces.

CONCLUSION

The proposed ESVL classifier could use the posterior probabilities to realize ensemble learning and the ESVL-based motor imagery classification approach takes advantage of the merits of ERD/ERS based feature and event-related potential based feature to improve the experimental performance.
