Exploring the Functionality of Mesh-to-Mesh Value Comparison in Pair-Matching and Its Application to Fragmentary Remains

Forensic anthropologists often face the task of analysing a mixed group of skeletal remains or matching a solitary bone with the rest of a skeleton to determine if it belongs to the same individual. One of the best ways to do this is by pair-matching left and right bones of the same type. Common pair-matching methods experience issues such as high levels of subjectivity, lack of reliability, or expensive cost of implementation. This study explores the application of the relatively new method, mesh-to-mesh value comparison (MVC), which matches paired bones based on morphological shape to determine the likelihood that they derive from the same individual. This study sought to expand on the success found in past publications using MVC and to see how well it performed on a sample of clavicles, a bone known for having a high degree of bilateral variability, of 80 modern Turkish individuals. This study also explored whether MVC can reliably match fragmented bones to their intact counterpart. Results show MVC successfully matched 88.8% of paired clavicles and suggest the method continues to be a promising avenue for pair-matching that is not affected by ancestry and may be applicable to fragmented remains with further study.

Abstract

Many cases encountered by forensic anthropologists involve commingled remains or isolated elements. Common methods for analysing these contexts are characterised by limitations such as high degrees of subjectivity, high cost of application, or low proven accuracy. This study sought to test mesh-to-mesh value comparison (MCV), a relatively new method for pair-matching skeletal elements, to validate the claims that the technique is unaffected by age, sex and pathology. The sample consisted of 160 three-dimensional clavicle models created from computed tomography (CT) scans of a contemporary Turkish population. Additionally, this research explored the application of MVC to match fragmented elements to their intact counterparts by creating a sample of 480 simulated fragments, consisting of three different types based on the region of the bone they originate from. For comparing whole clavicles, this resulted in a sensitivity value of 87.6% and specificity of 90.9% using ROC analysis comparing clavicles. For the fragment comparisons, each type was compared to the entire clavicles of the opposite side. The results included a range of sensitivity values from 81.3% to 87.6%. Overall results are promising and the MVC technique seems to be a useful technique for matching paired elements that can be accurately applied to a Modern Turkish sample.

Next-generation osteometric sorting: Using 3D shape, elliptical Fourier analysis, and Hausdorff distance to optimize osteological pair-matching

Determining which bilateral bones belong to the same person based on shape and size similarity is called pair-matching and it is instrumental for sorting commingled skeletons. To date, pair-matching has popularly been accomplished by visual inspection and/or linear caliper measurements; however, attention is turning increasingly to computational analysis. In this paper, we investigate a fast three-dimensional (3D) computerized shape-analysis method for whole-bone pair-matching using a test sample of 14 individuals (23 femora, 26 humeri, and 26 tibiae). Specifically, the method aims to find bilateral pairs using, as the shape signature criterion, a single 3D outline that snakes around each bone's perimeter as described by a 3D elliptical Fourier analysis function. This permits substantial 3D-point-cloud data reduction, that is, to 0.02% of the starting c.500,000 point cloud or just 100 points, while preserving key 3D shape information. The mean Hausdorff distance (Hd) was applied to measure the distance between each mirrored right-side outline to every left-side outline in pairwise fashion (132, 168 and 169 comparisons, respectively). Both thresholds and lowest Hd were investigated as pair-match criteria, with the lowest Hd producing the best performance results for searches jointly utilizing right-left and left-right directions for comparison: true positive rates of 1.00 (10/10), 1.00 (12/12), and 0.92 (11/12) for the femora, humeri, and tibiae, respectively. The computational time to calculate 469 pairwise 3D comparisons on a single stock-standard Intel^® Core™ i7-4650U CPU @ 1.70 GHz was 5 s. This short data processing time makes the method viable for real-world application.

Advancements in sex estimation using the diaphyseal cross-sectional geometric properties of the lower and upper limbs

This paper introduces an automated method for estimating sex from the lower and upper limbs based on diaphyseal CSG properties. The proposed method was developed and evaluated using 389 femurs, 412 tibias, and 404 humeri of adult individuals from a modern Greek reference sample, the Athens Collection. The skeletal properties, which were extracted with the CSG-Toolkit, were analyzed with step-wise DFA (evaluated with LOOCV) and subsequently with RBF kernel SVM supervised learning. SVM cross-validation was based on a 20-fold stratified random sample splitting as well as a chronological split based on year of birth to further assess the effect of secular change in sex estimation capacity. Maximum cross-validated classification accuracy from step-wise DFA reached 94.8% for the femur, 94.7% for the tibia, and 97.3% for the humerus, whereas SVM cross-validated results were similar although slightly lower, mainly due to the more strict cross-validation scheme. Our results suggest that the proposed sex estimation method is reasonably robust to secular change, since there was limited loss in classification accuracy between different chronological groups, despite the presence of secular change in stature of the Greek population during the examined period. The proposed method has been implemented as a function for the GNU Octave environment, named estimate_sex, which comprises a self-intuitive graphical user interface for facilitating sex estimation and is freely available under a suitable license.
