Abstract
In this report, we present a case of a woman with concurrent cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade III (CIN III) and urethral cancer, both associated with HPV16 infection. This unique case was initially brought to attention due to postmenopausal vaginal bleeding, despite the absence of urological symptoms and negative tumor markers. An unexpected discovery of pelvic lymph node metastasis during a hysterectomy intended for CIN III highlighted the rare coexistence of these conditions, with urethral cancer also linked to HPV-16 within the urethral lesion. This case emphasizes the diagnostic challenges faced by HPV-related cervical lesions and the critical need for increased vigilance, even when urological symptoms are not apparent. The findings underline the potential complexity of HPV-associated lesions and advocate for comprehensive screening strategies to ensure the timely detection and management of such intricate cases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS The objective was to assess PD-L1 expression in nonbacterial chronic cystitis (NCC) and bladder cancer (BC). METHODS The present study included 20 NCC and 20 BC patients. The degree of inflammation of the bladder wall was assessed on slides stained with H&E. Viral pathogens (herpes simplex virus, Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, and high-risk HPVs) were detected using real-time polymerase chain reaction analyses of the bladder specimens. Immunohistochemistry was performed to assess the PD-L1 expression in bladder tissue. RESULTS Expression of PD-L1 was detected in 40% of NCC patients and 85% of BC patients. Viral pathogens were found in 50% of NCC patients and 60% of BC patients, with EBV being the most common. In NCC patients the immune cell score correlated strongly with the degree of inflammatory infiltration of the bladder wall (r = 0.867, p < 0.001), the presence of lymphoid aggregates in the submucosa (r = 0.804, p < 0.001), koilocytosis (r = 0.620, p = 0.004), and the presence of viral pathogens (r = 0.784, p < 0.001). In BC patients the immune cell score correlated with the degree of inflammatory infiltration of the bladder wall (r = 0.534, p = 0.015) and the presence of viral pathogens (r = 0.626, p = 0.003), but not with the presence of lymphoid aggregates in the submucosa (r = 0.083, p = 0.729), and koilocytosis (r = 0.366, p = 0.112). CONCLUSIONS Expression of PD-L1 was detected in a cohort of NCC patients, although the PD-L1 positivity rate was lower than that in BC. Our results demonstrate that the degree of PD-L1 expression in bladder tissue is associated with the presence of viral infections and with the degree of inflammatory infiltration of the bladder wall in both NCC and BC.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Breast cancer is considered the most frequent type of cancer in women with high mortality worldwide, and most importantly, it is the second most common cancer. However, some breast cancer-related risk factors remain unknown. So, the current study was designed to evaluate the effect of Toxocara canis on the biomarkers correlated with proliferation, apoptosis, inflammation, and angiogenesis in 4T1 tumor-bearing mice infected with Toxocara canis for the first time. METHODS Mice were categorized into four groups: A) control, B) treated with 4T1+ Toxocara canis, C) treated with Toxocara canis, and D) treated with 4T1. The expression of Ki-67 and P53 was then evaluated by using the immunohistochemical technique. In addition, the levels of transforming growth factor-β, Interferon gamma-γ, Interleukin 10, tumor necrosis factor-α and vascular endothelial growth factor as well as anti- Toxocara canis IgG were determined using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. RESULTS The expression of Ki-67 was significantly increased in the 4T1+ Toxocara canis group than control and Toxocara canis groups (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001, respectively). Moreover, a significant decrease in P53 was found in the 4T1+ Toxocara canis group than in the control and Toxocara canis groups (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001, respectively). Also, the 4T1+ Toxocara canis group significantly reduced the expression of P53 more than 4T1 tumor-bearing mice (P = 0.005). In addition, the 4T1+ Toxocara canis group had an increasing tumor necrosis factor-α and vascular endothelial growth factor than controls (P = 0.004 and P = 0.002, respectively). Furthermore, a significant reduction in Interleukin 10 was found in the 4T1+ Toxocara canis group than in the control group (P = 0.004). CONCLUSION Our findings showed that Toxocara canis could probably increase the potential of breast cancer by reducing P53 in 4T1 tumor-bearing mice infected with Toxocara canis more than other groups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Advanced bladder squamous cell carcinoma (aBSCC) is an uncommon form of urinary bladder malignancy when compared with the much higher urothelial carcinoma incidence. We studied the genomic alteration (GA) landscape in a series of aBSCC based on the association with human papilloma virus (HPV) to determine if differences in GA would be observed between the positive and negative groups. METHODS Using a hybrid capture-based FDA-approved CGP assay, a series of 171 aBSCC were sequenced to evaluate all classes of GA. Tumor mutational burden (TMB) was determined on up to 1.1 Mbp of sequenced DNA and microsatellite instability (MSI) was determined on up to 114 loci. Programmed cell death ligand -1 (PD-L1) expression was determined by IHC (Dako 22C3) with negative expression when PD-L1 was 0, lower expression of positivity set at 1 to 49%, and higher expression set at ≥50% expression. RESULTS Overall, 11 (6.4%) of the aBSCC were found to harbor HPV sequences (10 HPV16 and 1 HPV 11). HPV+ status was identified slightly more often in women (NS) and in younger patients (P = 0.04); 2 female patients with aBSCC had a prior history of SCC including 1 anal SCC and 1 vaginal SCC. HPV+ aBSCC had fewer GA/tumor (P < 0.0001), more inactivating mutations in RB1 (P = 0.032), and fewer inactivating GA in CDKN2A (P < 0.0001), CDKN2B (P = 0.05), TERT promoter (P = 0.0004) and TP53 (P < 0.0001). GA in genes associated with urothelial carcinoma including FGFR2 and FGFR3 were similar in both HPV+ and HPV- aBSCC groups. MTAP loss (homozygous deletion) which has emerged as a biomarker for PRMT5 inhibitor-based clinical trials was not identified in any of the 11 HPV+ aBSCC cases, which was significantly lower than the 28% positive frequency of MTAP loss in the HPV- aBSCC group (P < 0.0001). MTOR and PIK3CA pathway GA were not significantly different in the 2 groups. Putative biomarkers associated with immunotherapy (IO) response, including MSI and TMB status, were also similar in the 2 groups. PD-L1 expression data was available for a subset of both HPV+ and HPV- cases and showed high frequencies of positive staining which was not different in the 2 groups. CONCLUSIONS HPV+ aBSCC tends to occur more often in younger patients. As reported in other HPV-associated squamous cell carcinomas, HPV+ aBSCC demonstrates significantly reduced frequencies of inactivating mutations in cell cycle regulatory genes with similar GA in MTOR and PIK3CA pathways. The implication of HPV in the pathogenesis of bladder cancer remains unknown but warrants further exploration and clinical validation.

Abstract
Background Urothelial carcinomas (UC) account for 6 and 2% of all cancers in men and women, respectively. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the causative agents in cancers of the uterine cervix and head and neck. The role of HPV is also being studied in cancers of the urinary bladder, penis, and prostate. As p16-INK4a is a surrogate marker for high-risk HPVE7 oncoprotein, this study aims to highlight the utility of p16 immunohistochemistry (IHC) in the evaluation of HPV-associated UC. Materials and Methods A retrospective study was conducted on UC of the bladder received in the Pathology department between January 2013 and December 2018. Bladder biopsies from non-neoplastic lesions served as controls. IHC was done for the detection of the p16 antigen. The p16 staining was recorded as positive, when there was strong staining in >50% of tumor nuclei. The p16 positive and negative tumors were compared based on age, gender, tumor size, grade, and muscle invasion. P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results The expression of p16 was analyzed in 72 UC and compared with 20 non-neoplastic cases, of which 26.4% of the cases showed p16 expression. The p16 expression was absent in the non-neoplastic lesions. While the majority (87.5%) of the low-grade tumors were negative for p16 expression, 43.8% high-grade tumors were positive. Similarly, a larger proportion of invasive carcinomas (38.8%) expressed p16 as compared to non-invasive carcinomas (13.8%). Thus, p16 expression showed a significant association with grade and stage in these malignancies (P < 0.05). Conclusion The p16 expression was associated with high-grade and muscle-invasive UC. The p16 was absent in all non-neoplastic and precursor lesions. Thus, it can provide essential information not only about HPV association but also on the prognostic implications for the patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE Urinary incontinence is a common condition and reduces the quality of life. The purpose of this study was to assess the association between HPV infection and urinary incontinence among adult women in the USA. METHODS We examined a cross-sectional study using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database. Women who had valid HPV DNA vaginal swab test results and answered the questionnaire about urinary incontinence were selected from six consecutive survey cycles (2005-2006 to 2015-2016). The association between HPV status and urinary incontinence was analyzed using weighted logistic regression. Models adjusted for potential variables were established. RESULTS In total, 8348 females aged between 20 and 59 years old were enrolled in this study. 47.8% of participants had a history of urinary incontinence and 43.9% of women were HPV DNA positive. After adjusting for all confounders, women with HPV infection were less likely to have urinary incontinence (OR = 0.88, 95%CI 0.78-0.98). Low-risk HPV infection correlated with a lower incidence of incontinence (OR = 0.88, 95%CI 0.77-1.00). For women aged below 40 years, low-risk HPV infection negatively correlated with stress incontinence (20-29ys: OR = 0.67, 95%CI 0.49-0.94; 30-39ys: OR = 0.71, 95%CI 0.54-0.93). However, low-risk HPV infection positively correlated with stress incontinence (OR = 1.40, 95%CI 1.01-1.95) for women 50-59 years old. CONCLUSION This study revealed a negative association between HPV infection and urinary incontinence in females. Low-risk HPV correlated with stress urinary incontinence, with the reverse trend for participants of different ages.

Abstract
Among human tumorigenic viruses, the role of Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been proven as one of the most important oncoviruses that are associated with a large number of cancers. Most cancers of the genital area such cervical and anal cancer as are caused by HPV, and in many other cancers, such as colorectal, gastric, liver, esophageal, urinary bladder, and head and neck cancers, it is considered as one of the important risk factors. Our search was conducted for published researches between 2000 and 2022 by using several international databases including Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science as well as Google scholar. We also evaluated additional evidence from relevant published articles. It has been demonstrated that HPV can promote tumorigenesis via focusing on genes, proteins, and signaling pathways, by using E6 and E7 oncoproteins and inhibiting two crucial tumor suppressors, P53 and Rb. The following study was performed to investigate different malignant cancers under the influence of HPV infection and changes in molecular factors caused by HPV infection.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Bladder cancer (BCa) is the 10th most common type of cancer worldwide, and human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection. However, the relationship between HPV infection and the risk of BCa is still controversial and inconclusive. METHODS This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following the PRISMA 2020 reporting guideline. This study searched four bibliographic databases with no language limitation. The databases included PubMed (Medline), EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. Studies evaluating the interaction between HPV infection and the risk of BCa from inception through May 21, 2022, were identified and used in this study. This study estimated the overall and type-specific HPV prevalence and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) using Random Effects models and Fixed Effects models. In addition, this study also calculated the pooled odds ratio and pooled risk ratio with 95% CI to assess the effect of HPV infection on the risk and prognosis of bladder cancer. Two-sample mendelian randomization (MR) study using genetic variants associated with HPV E7 protein as instrumental variables were also conducted. RESULTS This study retrieved 80 articles from the four bibliographic databases. Of the total, 27 were case-control studies, and 53 were cross-sectional studies. The results showed that the prevalence of HPV was 16% (95% CI: 11%-21%) among the BCa patients, most of which were HPV-16 (5.99% [95% CI: 3.03%-9.69%]) and HPV-18 (3.68% [95% CI: 1.72%-6.16%]) subtypes. However, the study found that the prevalence varied by region, detection method, BCa histological type, and sample source. A significantly increased risk of BCa was shown for the positivity of overall HPV (odds ratio [OR], 3.35 [95% CI: 1.75-6.43]), which was also influenced by study region, detection method, histological type, and sample source. In addition, the study found that HPV infection was significantly associated with the progression of BCa (RR, 1.73 [95% CI: 1.39-2.15]). The two-sample MR analysis found that both HPV 16 and 18 E7 protein exposure increased the risk of BCa (HPV 16 E7 protein: IVW OR per unit increase in protein level = 1.0004 [95% CI: 1.0002-1.0006]; p = 0.0011; HPV 18 E7 protein: IVW OR per unit increase in protein level = 1.0003 [95% CI: 1.0001-1.0005]; p = 0.0089). CONCLUSION In conclusion, HPV may play a role in bladder carcinogenesis and contribute to a worse prognosis for patients with BCa. Therefore, it is necessary for people, especially men, to get vaccinated for HPV vaccination to prevent bladder cancer.

Abstract
Although urine and bladder washing samples are commonly used for the cytological evaluation of the bladder mucosa, it has been unknown whether these samples are likely suitable to investigate human papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence in the urinary bladder. The present study aimed to elucidate the appropriateness of spontaneously voided urine or bladder washing in screening HPV infection in the urinary bladder. Urine and bladder washing samples were obtained from 201 patients who underwent transurethral bladder tumor resection. After extracting DNA from both samples, HPV-DNA was examined using a nested polymerase chain reaction with GP5+/6+ and MY09/11 primers. HPV genotyping was performed in the HPV-positive samples. In situ hybridization (ISH) was performed to observe the HPV-DNA localization in urothelial cells among cytological samples and paraffin-embedded tumor tissues in HPV-positive washing samples. HPV prevalence in urine and washing samples were 9.5% and 7.0%, respectively. High-risk HPV prevalence in urine and washing samples was 7.5% and 4.0%, respectively. The most common HPV type was HPV 16, followed by HPV 52 and HPV 18 in both samples. HPV type distribution in both samples was not in agreement (κ = -0.431). The ISH analysis revealed that HPV-DNA signal was observed in urothelial cells of five (55.7%) of nine detectable HPV-positive cytological samples. Six (66.7%) of nine HPV-positive cases had HPV-DNA signals in tumor tissue. The use of washing samples was likely applicable for investigating HPV prevalence in the urinary bladder. HPV-DNA detected in washing samples might be frequently derived from the urinary bladder.

Abstract
Objective Primary bladder tumors have a high degree of malignancy. To investigate the expression of human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) in primary bladder tumors and the loss of cell differentiation and to explore the significance of HPV-16 detection, it is expected to be a disease. Treatment provides a theoretical basis. Methods Fifty-seven patients with primary bladder tumors admitted to our hospital from January 2019 to January 2022 were selected as the research subjects, and they were divided into HPV-related groups according to the human papillomavirus (HPV) infection status (n = 28) and HPV unrelated group (n = 29). The general data of patients were collected, the expression of HPV-16 in bladder tissue samples was detected, and the correlation between pathological parameters and HPV-16 expression was analyzed. Results Among HPV subtypes, HPV 16 subtype accounted for the highest proportion, followed by HPV-18 and HPV-6 subtypes; there was no significant difference in tumor stage (stage 1, stage a, stage 2a) between the HPV-related group and the HPV-unrelated group (stage 1, stage a, and stage 2a). P > 0.05); there was no significant difference in postoperative pathological expression (high expression and low expression) of patients (P > 0.05); there was no statistical difference in age and gender between HPV-related and HPV-unrelated groups (P > 0.05), HPV-related group and HPV-unrelated group compared daily regular drinking and smoking status, the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05); HPV-16 expression was not correlated with tumor differentiation degree and age of patients (P > 0.05); the area under the curve (AUC) of HPV-16 for judging primary bladder tumor expression and cellular molecular deletion was 0.891, with a sensitivity of 83.94% and a specificity of 88.57%. Conclusion HPV-16 is an upper, expressed in primary bladder tumors and will participate in the differentiation and loss of cells, which can provide effective guidance and basis for the diagnosis of primary bladder tumors, which is an important factor for judging the pathological stage and prognosis of patients and can provide a theoretical reference for the formulation of therapeutic measures.

Abstract
The etiology of bladder cancer is known to be associated with behavioral and environmental factors. Moreover, several studies suggested a potential role of HPV infection in the pathogenesis with controversial results. A systematic review was conducted to assess the role of HPV. A total of 46 articles that reported the prevalence of HPV infection in squamous (SCC), urothelial (UC), and transitional cell carcinomas (TCC) were selected. A pooled prevalence of 19% was found, with a significant difference in SCC that was mainly driven by HPV-16. Moreover, infection prevalence in case-control studies showed a higher risk of bladder cancer in HPV-positive cases (OR: 7.84; p-value < 0.00001). The results may suggest an etiologic role of HPV in bladder cancer. HPV vaccine administration in both sexes could be key to prevent the infection caused by high-risk genotypes.

Prognostic Value of HPV E6 and APOBEC3B in Upper Urinary Tract Urothelial Carcinoma. DISEASE MARKERS 2022; 2022:2147494. Abstract
Background APOBEC mutation signature is common in upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC). When virus infection occurs, upregulated APOBEC plays an antiviral role by deoxycytidine deaminase activity. However, the carcinogenic roles of HPV E6 protein and APOBEC mutation signature in UTUC have not been investigated. Aims This study explored the relationship among HPV E6, APOBEC, and clinicopathological characteristics in patients with UTUC and impacts of their expression on the prognosis. Methods The expression of HPV E6 and APOBEC3B of 78 patients with UTUC was detected by immunohistochemistry. Correlation of HPV E6 and APOBEC3B expression levels with clinicopathological characteristics was statistically analyzed. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were used to evaluate the prognosis of HPV E6 and APOBEC3B for disease-free survival (DFS); survival analysis was performed using Kaplan-Meier methods. Results The expression of APOBEC3B was positively correlated with the expression of HPV E6 (r = 0.383, P = 0.001). HPV E6 was significantly increased in patients with stage I (χ2 = 4.938, P = 0.026) and low-grade urothelial carcinoma (χ2 = 3.939, P = 0.047), as well as in patients without LVI (χ2 = 4.064, P = 0.044). Meanwhile, APOBEC3B was highly expressed in patients with stage I (χ2 = 4.057, P = 0.044) and low-grade urothelial carcinoma (χ2 = 7.153, P = 0.007). Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed the APOBEC3B expression was the independent prognostic factor for DFS, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that low expression of APOBEC3B and HPV E6 was significantly associated with the poor prognosis of UTUC patients. Conclusion HPV E6 expression is positively associated with APOBEC3B expression, and the high expression of HPV E6 and APOBEC3B is associated with favorable prognosis of patients with UTUC.

Abstract
Background Numerous studies support that Human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause cervical cancer. However, few studies have surveyed the heterogeneity of HPV infected or uninfected (HPV+ and HPV-) cervical cancer (CESC) patients. Integration of scRNA-seq and TCGA data to analyze the heterogeneity of HPV+ and HPV- cervical cancer patients on a single-cell level could improve understanding of the cellular mechanisms during HPV-induced cervical cancer. Methods CESC scRNA-seq data obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and the Seurat, Monocle3 package were used for scRNA-seq data analysis. The ESTIMATE package was used for single-sample gene immune score, CIBERSORT package was used to identify immune scores of cells, and the “WGCNA” package for the weighted correlation network analysis. Univariate Cox and LASSO regression were performed to establish survival and relapse signatures. KEGG and GO analyses were performed for the signature gene. Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis was used for Pan-cancer analysis. Results In the HPV+ CESC group, CD8+ T cells and B cells were down-regulated, whereas T reg cells, CD4+ T cells, and epithelial cells were up-regulated according to scRNA-seq data. Survival analysis of TCGA-CESC revealed that increased expression of naive B cells or CD8+ T cells favors the survival probability of CESC patients. WGCNA, univariate Cox, and LASSO Cox regression established a 9-genes survival signature and a 7-gene relapse model. Pan-cancer analysis identified IKZF3, FOXP3, and JAK3 had a similar distribution and effects in HPV-associated HNSC. Conclusion Analysis of scRNA-seq and bulk RNA-seq of HPV+ and HPV- CESC samples revealed heterogeneity from transcriptional state to immune infiltration. Survival and relapse models were adjusted according to the heterogeneity of HPV+ and HPV- CESC immune cells to assess the prognostic risk accurately. Hub genes represent similar protection in HPV- associated HNSC while showing irrelevant to other potential HPV-related cancers.

Abstract
Background Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a well‐established mucosotropic carcinogen, but its impact on urothelial neoplasm is unclear. We aimed to clarify the clinical and pathological features of HPV‐related urothelial carcinoma (UC). Methods Tissue samples of 228 cases of UC were obtained from the bladder, upper and lower urinary tract, and metastatic sites to construct a tissue microarray. The samples were analyzed for the presence of HPV by a highly sensitive and specific mRNA in situ hybridization (RISH) technique (RNAscope) with a probe that can detect 18 varieties of high‐risk HPV. We also conducted immunohistochemistry (IHC) for a major HPV capsid antibody and DNA‐PCR. Results The HPV detection rates varied among the methods; probably due to low HPV copy numbers in UC tissues and the insufficient specificity and sensitivity of the IHC and PCR assays. The RISH method had the highest accuracy and identified HPV infection in 12 (5.2%) of the cases. The histopathological analysis of the HPV‐positive UC showed six cases of usual type UC, five cases of UC with squamous differentiation (UC_SqD), and one case of micropapillary UC. The HPV detection rate was six‐fold higher in the cases of UC_SqD than in the other variants of UC (odds ratio [OR] =8.9, p = 0.002). In addition, HPV infection showed a significant association with tumor grade (OR =9.8, p = 0.03) and stage (OR =4.7, p = 0.03) of UC. Moreover, the metastatic rate was higher in HPV‐positive than in negative UC (OR =3.4). Conclusion These data indicate that although the incidence of HPV infection in UC is low, it is significantly associated with squamous differentiation and poor prognosis. Furthermore, our observations show that RNAscope is an ideal method for HPV detection in UC compared with the other standard approaches such as IHC and PCR assays.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) infects squamous epithelium and is a major cause of cervical cancer (CC) and a subset of head and neck cancers (HNC). Virus-induced tumorigenesis, molecular alterations, and related prognostic markers are expected to be similar between the two cancers, but they remain poorly understood. We present integrated molecular analysis of HPV-associated tumors from TCGA and GEO databases and identify prognostic biomarkers. Analysis of gene expression profiles identified common upregulated genes and pathways of DNA replication and repair in the HPV-associated tumors. We established 34 prognostic gene signatures with a universal cutoff value in TCGA-CC using Elastic Net Cox regression analysis. We were able to externally validate our results in the TCGA-HNC and several GEO data sets, and demonstrated prognostic power in HPV-associated HNC, but not in HPV-negative cancers. The HPV-related prognostic and predictive indicator did not discriminate other cancers, except bladder urothelial carcinoma. These results identify and completely validate a highly selective prognostic system and its cross-usefulness in HPV-associated cancers, regardless of the tumor's anatomical subsite.IMPORTANCE Persistent infection with high-risk HPV interferes with cell function regulation and causes cell mutations, which accumulate over the long term and eventually develop into cancer. Results of pathway enrichment analysis presumably showed this accumulation of intracellular damage during the chronic HPV-infected state. We used highly advanced statistical methods to identify the most appropriate genes and coefficients and developed the HPV-related prognostic and predictive indicator (HPPI) risk scoring system. We applied the same cutoff value to training and validation sets and demonstrated good prognostic performance in both data sets, and confirmed a consistent trend in external validation. Moreover, HPPI presented significant validation results for bladder cancer suspected to be related to HPV. This suggested that our risk scoring system based on the prognostic gene signature could play an important role in the development of treatment strategies for patients with HPV-related cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is associated with multiple types of cancer, but the evidence has not yet been fully elucidated in bladder cancer. METHODS Frozen tissue samples collected from 146 patients aged 32 to 89 years with bladder cancer pathological diagnosis between 2015 and 2019 were analyzed. HPV genotyping and integration status determination were performed by capture-based next generation sequencing. Statistical analysis of HPV type distributions was performed according to stage, grade, sex, and age group of patients. RESULTS Mean (SD) age of the 146 patients was 66.64 ± 10.06 years and 83.56% were men. Overall HPV infection rate was 28.77% (37.50% in women and 27.05% in men), with 11.90% HPV integration events. Among them, 17.12% single and 11.65% coinfections were observed. HPV18 (24.66%) was the most prevalent genotype, followed by HPV33, 16, and 39. All HPV were European lineage (A). HPV16 was more prevalent in women (P = .04). CONCLUSIONS HPV infection may contribute to the etiology both in men and women with bladder cancer. HPV18, followed by HPV33, 16, and 39 genotypes, potentially represent the predominant oncogenic risk types for bladder carcinogenesis.

Abstract
Background: There is growing evidence that viral infections may impact the risk and clinical course of malignancies, including solid tumors. The aim of this study was to assess the possible association of selected chronic/latent viral infections with the clinical course of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Methods: In this prospective study we enrolled 27 patients undergoing partial or radical nephrectomy due to the histologically confirmed RCC and followed them up for one year post-operation. Isolation of the nucleic acids was performed using the NucleoSpin Tissue Kit (Macherey-Nagel, Düren, Germany) from tumor tissue and using the EZ1 Virus Mini Kit v2.0 from plasma. The number of viral copies of human adenovirus (ADV), herpes simplex virus HSV-1 and HSV-2, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), BK virus (BKV) and John Cunningham virus (JCV) in the tissue and plasma was assessed with real-time PCR. Results: Viral infections were diagnosed in ten patients (37.0%), including three ADV cases (11.1%) and eight EBV cases (29.6%). Infected patients tended to be significantly older (71.3 vs. 57.6 years, p < 0.05), more commonly presented with chronic renal disease (OR 2.4, p < 0.05), diabetes (OR 4.2, p < 0.05) and overweight (OR 2.0, p < 0.05). Regarding oncological data, infected patients were found to have a higher rate of high-grade cancers (OR 5.0, p < 0.05) and a higher rate of papillary RCCs (OR 8.3, p < 0.05). Status of viral infections had no influence on the clinical cancer stage, surgical procedure or survival. Conclusions: EBV and ADV infections are common in renal cancer patients and increase the risk of high-grade RCC presence. While there is no significant impact on short term survival, further studies are needed to assess the relevance of these findings in a long run.
