Patient satisfaction with nursing care in an Intensive Care Unit measured through the Nursing Intensive-Care Satisfaction Scale (NICSS)

BACKGROUND

Patient satisfaction in relation with nursing care has become a key determinant of the quality of hospital care.

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate patient satisfaction in relation with nursing care in a critical care context; to determine the correlation between critical patient satisfaction and sociodemographic and clinical variables and to describe patient perceptions with nursing care.

METHODS

A descriptive, prospective, correlational study which includes the analysis of some open questions in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a tertiary level university hospital. The degree of satisfaction of all patients discharged from de ICU was evaluated. It was used the validated Spanish version of Nursing Intensive-Care Satisfaction-Scale (NICSS). There were also collected sociodemographic and clinical data and 3 open questions were asked. It was used the inferential and descriptive statistics considering statistically significant p<.05. Open questions were examined using a language context analysis. The approval of the hospital ethical committee was obtained.

RESULTS

111 patients agreed to participate, with a mean age of 64.18 years (CI 95% 61.36-66.88) and with a medium level of satisfaction of 5.83 (CI 95% 5.78-5.88) being 6 the maximum score. Women, older patients and those who reflect a higher degree of recovery, are those who reported greater satisfaction. Three main themes emerged from the analysis of the open-ended questions of the surveys: nurse patient relationship, professional practice environment and ICU nature.

CONCLUSION

Patient satisfaction in relation with nursing care was elevated. Age, sex and degree of recovery significantly influenced their perception. Nurse patient relationship and the professional practice environment were aspects highlighted by patients. The professional model incorporated by the institution may encouraged these results.

Satisfaction of patients with health care services in tertiary care facilities of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: A cross-sectional approach

As part of Saudi Vision 2030, the country's healthcare system is undergoing a significant makeover, with accessibility and effectiveness serving as the benchmarks for measuring patient care quality. This study's goal was to ascertain the degree of patient satisfaction with the medical care and services received in Riyadh's tertiary care facilities. The PSQ-18 (Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire-18), a standardized validated questionnaire including areas of "overall satisfaction," "technical quality," "interpersonal aspect," "communication," "financial aspect," "time spent with the doctor," and "accessibility and convenience," was used in this cross-sectional study on 384 patients of two tertiary care facilities in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, over a 6-month period. The degree to which sociodemographic characteristics and components of patient satisfaction are correlated was assessed using binary and multiple regression analysis. When the P-value was < 0.05, the results were considered significant and were presented as adjusted odds ratios (AOR). To ascertain how each PSQ-18 subscale affected other subscales, a Pearson Correlation analysis was conducted. The overall degree of satisfaction with all 18 items was 73.77%. The financial component received a rating of 81% compared to 77% for general satisfaction. Technical quality (75%) was followed by accessibility and convenience (73.5%), communication (73%), and interpersonal elements (72%). At 68%, the time spent in the doctor's domain received the lowest rating. The odds of satisfaction were increased by 3.87 times, 3.45 times, and 3.36 times among those who are employed, qualified by university education, and married compared to unemployed (P-value = 0.018), less qualified (P-value = 0.015) and singles (P-value = 0.026), respectively. The younger age group also made 1.78 times more of a difference in higher satisfaction ratings. The general satisfaction domain showed a positive association with other areas. Participants who were satisfied with the communication and accessibility and convenience domains of healthcare providers were the only ones who were typically satisfied with the domain of doctor time spent. The study's findings could act as a benchmark for Saudi Arabia's healthcare services as well as a starting point for quality assurance procedures.

The Relationship Between Perceived Quality of Care and the Patient Safety Culture of Turkish Nurses

BACKGROUND

Evaluating nurses' perceived quality of care and safety culture is an essential part of the nursing practice and critical to improving the quality of nursing care.

PURPOSE

This study aimed to examine the relationship between perceived quality of care and Turkish nurses' patient safety culture.

METHODS

This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. The data were collected from a foundation university hospital in Istanbul. The sample consisted of 116 nurses, and data were collected using the Caring Behaviors Inventory-24 and Patient Safety Culture Scale. The nurses were asked to complete the questionnaires.

RESULTS

The mean age of participating nurses was 25.95 ( SD = 6.72) years. The mean duration of professional experience of the participants was 6.37 ( SD = 6.05) years. Most (72.4%) of the participants were women who had graduated from vocational high schools (52.6%) and were working in the neonatal intensive care unit (37.9%). The highest mean subdimension score on the Caring Behaviors Inventory-24 was 5.78 ( SD = 0.43) for the knowledge and skills subdimension. The highest mean subdimension score on the Patient Safety Culture Scale was 3.55 ( SD = 0.48) for the unexpected event and error reporting subdimension. Statistically significant correlations were found between Caring Behaviors Inventory-24 and Patient Safety Culture Scale scores ( r = .553, p < .01), with the lowest correlation found between the employee behavior and knowledge and skills dimensions ( r = .305, p = .001). The highest statistically significant correlation coefficients that were found were between the Patient Safety Culture Scale total scores and the connectedness dimension of the Caring Behaviors Inventory-24 ( r = .58, p < .001).

CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Nurses perceive patient care positively and have a positive perception of safety culture. Evaluating the perceived quality of care and patient safety culture perceptions will help prevent adverse events related to patient care and improve the quality of care.

Patients' perceptions of the quality of nursing services

Introduction

The quality of nursing services is one of the main factors accelerating patients' recovery. The present study aimed to examine patients' perceptions of the quality of nursing services in the teaching hospitals of Iran.

Methods

This cross-sectional research was a descriptive-analytical study conducted in 2021, in which 1067 patients were selected as the research sample. The Qualipak nursing quality questionnaire (QUALPAC) was used to collect the required data. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient using SPSS software version 23.

Results

From the patients' perspective, the mean and standard deviation of the quality of nursing services was 191.47 ± 19.51. Among the quality dimensions, all services quality: psychosocial (91.34 ± 9.34), physical (65.72 ± 10.18), and communication (34.41 ± 6.21) were placed at the moderate level. A significant association was found between patients’ age and nursing service quality. The perceived nursing service quality was subject to sex (P = 0.01, t = 1.921) and place of residence (P = 0.02, t = 1.873).

Conclusion

According to the findings, the quality of nurses 'care was "moderate" from the patients' perspectives. Planning is recommended to reinforce and promote the quality of nursing services.

Attitudes of midwives and obstetricians towards midwives practiced roles in hospitals: A national study in Jordan

AIMS

The aims of this study were to identify midwives' and obstetricians' attitudes towards midwives practised roles in hospitals and to identify the differences in their attitudes towards midwives practiced roles.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A descriptive, cross-sectional, study design was used. A convenience sample of 303 midwives and 143 obstetricians were recruited. Participants were from 12 Ministry of Health (MOH) and Royal Medical Services (RMS) hospitals distributed across seven governorates. Two reliable and valid self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data including socio-demographic data-related characteristics of participants and obstetricians' and midwives' attitudes towards midwives' practiced role in hospitals.

RESULTS

There were significant differences between obstetricians in the three subscales of attitudes: midwives women relationship attitude subscale, midwives trust and mutual respect subscale and work environment attitudes subscale. A significant difference by the institution was reported: obstetricians and midwives who worked in MOH reported more positive attitudes than those who worked in RMS.

CONCLUSION

The results show that obstetricians recognise that midwives are qualified and competent professionals but still lack the competencies/skills to make them independent practitioners. The findings also confirm the need to improve midwives' practices by moving from being able to perform a specific task to possess all three attributes of "competencies," where they can intervene, manage and make decisions with confidence in each situation.

IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE

Based on the current study findings, parallel cooperation between educational/academic policymakers from both midwives and obstetricians may re-evaluate and upgrade the midwifery curriculum to meet the ICM competencies and health sector needs as a step to graduate competent midwives where their responsibility is recognised and organised.

Cuestionario de calidad del cuidado de enfermería (CUCACE): Validez y fiabilidad en Colombia

Objetivo Determinar la validez y confiabilidad del CUCACE (Cuestionario de Calidad de la Atención de Enfermería) en Colombia. Cada día hay un interés creciente en medir la cali- dad de la atención recibida por parte del personal de enfermería como elemento tangible de la atención; sin embargo, un obstáculo para medir la satisfacción del paciente es la no tenencia de instrumentos confiables y válidos, especialmente en Colombia. Método Se realizó un estudio instrumental psicométrico y evaluativo. Se extrajeron datos de interés del CUCACE cumplimentados en español, junto con la información demográfica de los participantes. Resultados Se confirmó la validez del contenido y construcción de las escalas de atención, atención al cuidado de enfermería y percepción del cuidado en un hospital colombiano. El alfa de Cronbach fue superior a 0,7; por lo tanto su fiabilidad se acepta en el contexto. Conclusión El CUCACE es adecuado para medir la satisfacción y experiencia de los pacientes con los cuidados de enfermería en el contexto colombiano. El cuestionario con sus dos escalas es útil, claro, preciso, válido y confiable para evaluar la calidad de la aten- ción de enfermería.

Patient Experience in Nursing Care and Associated Factors Among Adult Admitted Patients in Debre Markos and Dessie Referral Hospitals, Amhara Region, Ethiopia, 2019

Patient experience of nursing care is the perception of the patient about the real existing nursing service. Addressing patient experience of nursing care is very important to improve nursing service quality because it identifies the factors that affect the nursing care quality better than patient satisfaction. Therefore, this study aimed to assess patient experience in nursing care and associated factors among adult admitted patients in Debre Markos and Dessie referral hospitals. An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 1, 2019, to March 30, 2019, among 528 consecutively selected adult admitted patients. Data were cleaned, coded, and entered in Epi-data version 3.1 then exported to Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 25 for analysis. Multivariate logistic regression, with a 95% CI was used to identify variables that had a significant association. The overall good patient experience in nursing care was 64%. Duration of admission ≥22 days (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.67, 95% CI = 1.013-7.025) and free service (AOR = 3.69, 95% CI = 2.381-5.730) showed a positive association with patient experience in nursing care. However, admission in gynecology ward (AOR = 0.43, 95%CI = 0.257-0.707), secondary education (AOR = 0.53, 95% CI: 0.308-0.907), and college or above education (AOR = 0.55, 95%CI = 0.320-0.957) showed a negative association with patient experience in nursing care.

Level of satisfaction of users of a teaching hospital: the influence of the presence of students

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the level of satisfaction of inpatients in a teaching hospital regarding the quality of the hospital service by comparing term and non-term times.

METHOD

Cross-sectional study carried out in three inpatient units with users from 18 to 80 years old who stayed in the hospital for at least 72 hours. An instrument for sociodemographic characterization and the SERVQUAL scale were applied to measure the level of satisfaction. Data collection occurred in two periods: term and non-term times.

RESULTS

Three hundred and five users of the service of both genders, with an average age of 46.2 years, were interviewed. Concerning the dimensions that make up the SERVQUAL scale, empathy was mentioned as the one with which the users attended to during term time expressed the greatest dissatisfaction (p=0.01). Regarding the service dimension, the level of satisfaction of the users was higher during term time (p=0.01). Tangibles, reliability, and assurance did not show differences when comparing the two examined periods.

CONCLUSION

The users identified higher empathy and better service during term time, but similar perceptions were not reported for assurance and reliability.

The prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder among emergency nurses: a cross sectional study in northern Iran

Background and objective: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the anxiety disorders which occurs in response to facing events and accidents accompanied by fear, frustration, and terror. Nurses who worked in the emergency departments witness unpleasant accidents and are exposed to stress and violence more than others. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of PTSD among Iranian nurses working in the emergency department.

Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, all nurses working in the emergency department of educational hospitals affiliated with Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences were included through census method (n = 131). Each of the participants in this study responded to the questionnaires individually. The first part of the questionnaire captured demographics, while the second part was the Civilian Mississippi Scale for PTSD, which was used to investigate the extent of PTSD in this study. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.

Results: In this study, 131 respondents were included. In the classification of age, nurses with 20-30-year- old had the maximum frequency (41.2 %,). Most nurses in the study (93.1%, n = 122) had a bachelor’s degree in nursing and 84 were married. The prevalence of PTSD in emergency nurses was 82.96%, which was higher in nurses with shorter working background and nurses with lower levels of education. Further, the average score of PTSD was higher in married nurses.

Conclusion: The results of this study revealed the high prevalence of PTSD among nurses who worked in emergency department. Therefore, it seems that designing and providing supportive and educational services to emergency nurses can be effective for preventing and managing this disorder, which probably can improve their performance.

Patient satisfaction with the quality of nursing care

AIM

To evaluate patients' satisfaction with the quality of nursing care and examine associated factors.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional, descriptive survey study.

METHODS

The sample was composed of 635 patients discharged from a private hospital. Data were collected using "Patient Satisfaction with Nursing Care Quality Questionnaire" with a total of 19 items, and a questionnaire designed to record socio-demographic characteristics and medical histories between January 1-May 31, 2015.

RESULTS

Patients were more satisfied with the "Concern and Caring by Nurses" and less satisfied with the "Information You Were Given." Patients (63.9%) described nursing care offered during hospitalization as excellent. Patients who were 18-35 years old, married, college or university graduates, treated at the surgery and obstetrics-gynaecology units, and patients who stated their health as excellent and hospitalized once or at least five times were more satisfied with the nursing care. According to this study, the nurses needed to show greater amount of interest to the information-giving process.

Patient satisfaction: Concept analysis in the healthcare context

OBJECTIVE

Patient satisfaction had been the focus of many scientific studies worldwide. However, very few studies published had addressed the definition of the concept of patient satisfaction. Therefore this present concept analysis is to explore the attributes of the concept in the broader healthcare context.

METHODS

The Rodgers method, an inductive method of concept analysis, was selected to guide this concept analysis.

RESULTS

The attributes of patient satisfaction in the healthcare context identified were provider attitude, technical competence, accessibility, and efficacy. Perception in relation to expectation, patient demographics and personality, and market competition were regarded as prerequisites of patient satisfaction. Consequences of patient satisfaction identified in this analysis were: patient compliance, clinical outcomes, loyalty and referrals.

CONCLUSION

As healthcare is becoming an increasingly competitive marketplace, studying patient experience could certainly help practitioners to better encompass patient perspectives in service delivery and improve patient satisfaction.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

To ensure the validity of patient satisfaction measurement and subsequently improve healthcare quality, practitioners should involve patients in identifying important factors relevant to each attributes of patient satisfaction.

Satisfaction of surgical patients with perioperative nursing care in a Spanish tertiary care hospital

OBJECTIVE

Although numerous studies have assessed patient satisfaction in diverse settings, in the realm of nursing surgical care, standardization of measurement for patient experience and satisfaction is lacking. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the satisfaction of surgical patients with perioperative nursing care.

METHOD

A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted. Sociodemographic characteristics and clinical data were recorded. Patient satisfaction was measured with a modified version of the La Monica-Oberst Patient Satisfaction Scale (LOPSS-12).

RESULTS

150 patients (73 women, 49% and 77 men; 51%) completed the survey. The mean age was 63 years (standard deviation, 16 years). The mean overall satisfaction score on the La Monica-Oberst Patient Satisfaction Scale was 3.17 (standard deviation, 0.21). The scale showed adequate content validity (Lawshe's Content Validity Index was 0.76) and moderate reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.70). Two variables-patient sex and the presence of comorbidities-were significantly associated with overall satisfaction: men and patients with comorbidities were more satisfied with the care received. Patients with university studies were significantly more likely than patients with less education to consider nurses "impatient," but also considered the nurses' advice to be "useful." Patients with hospital-acquired complications were more likely to perceive nurses to be "more interested in completing tasks than in listening," although they also felt that nurses worked "conscientiously."

CONCLUSION

Overall, patient satisfaction with perioperative nursing care was good. This study identified several areas of nursing care in need of improvement, particularly the need to spend more time with patients and to keep them better informed about the perioperative process. The modified La Monica-Oberst Patient Satisfaction Scale is suitable for measuring surgical patient satisfaction with perioperative nursing care. The findings presented here may be of value to nursing administrators, educators, and nursing care providers to improve patient satisfaction and to develop strategies to prevent patient dissatisfaction.

A study of deficiencies in teamwork skills among Jordan caregivers

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the deficiencies in teamwork skills at Jordan hospitals as seen by team members. The study aims to identify training needs to improve teamwork-related soft skills of caregivers to enhance staff satisfaction and improve quality of care. Moreover, the paper provides a methodology to identify the training needs in any healthcare workplace by repeating the same questionnaire.

Design/methodology/approach

A self-administrated questionnaire was designed to study deficiencies in teamwork and team leadership at Jordan hospitals as seen by team members. Surveyed care providers included physicians, nursing and anesthesiologists operating in emergency departments, surgical operating rooms and intensive care units from various hospitals.

Findings

With a response rate of 78.8 percent, statistical analysis of collected data of opposing staff members revealed low levels of satisfaction (40.7-48 percent opposing), lack of awareness on the impact of teamwork on quality of care (15.6-22.1 percent opposing), low levels of involvement of top management (27.1-57.3 percent opposing), lack of training (52.5-69.8 percent opposing), lack of leadership skills (29.8-60 percent opposing), lack of communication (22.3-62.1 percent opposing), lack of employee involvement (37.6-50.8 percent opposing) and lack of collaboration among team members (28.6-50 percent opposing). Among the many, results illustrate the need for improving leadership skills of team leaders, improving communication and involving team members in decision making.

Originality/value

Several studies investigated relationships between teamwork skills and quality of care in many countries. To the authors’ knowledge, no local study investigated the deficiencies of teamwork skills among Jordan caregivers and its impact on quality of care. The study provides the ground for management at Jordan hospitals and to healthcare academic departments to tailor training courses to improve teamwork skills of caregivers. Data of this study are collected from the society who is working in the field of healthcare. As the results of this are produced from a real data, it is expected that applying the recommendations will impact the society positively by enhancing the patients’ satisfaction.

Satisfaction of Patients With Spinal Cord Injury With Self-Care Teaching by Nurses: Is It Influenced by Learning Readiness?

PURPOSE

The aims of the study were to measure satisfaction of patients with a spinal cord injury (SCI) with discharge teaching by nurses and to examine the relationship between their stage of learning readiness and satisfaction.

DESIGN

Quasi-experimental.

METHOD

Ninety-seven patients were surveyed to determine satisfaction using the Modified Client Satisfaction Tool; nurses determined the stage of learning readiness for patients with SCI using the Olinzock Model. Satisfaction scores were analyzed with ANOVA F and chi-square tests and correlated with learning readiness stage using t tests.

FINDINGS

Results showed no relationship between the stage of learning readiness and satisfaction. Patients indicated satisfaction regardless of the stage of learning readiness. Those commenting "nurses don't teach" were significantly less satisfied with self-care teaching.

CONCLUSION

The perception of patients with SCI of the role of the nurse as teacher influences satisfaction with discharge teaching by nurses.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Nurses may need to consider changes in their practice to help patients realize their role as teacher.

Reminding the Health Team About What Companions of the Patients Undergoing Gynecological Surgery Should Know: A Qualitative Study

Background:

Patients’ family members often do not receive sufficient information, especially because the reproductive system of women is considered a taboo, providing information becomes problematic. The aim of the current study was to explore the informational-educational needs of companions of the patients who were undergoing gynecological surgery.

Materials and Methods:

This study was conducted using inductive and conventional content analysis method. For data collection, 34 semi-structured in-depth interviews were performed at a gynecology and obstetrics center with purposeful sampling and maximum variation. The participants included patients’ companions, nurses, physicians, patients, and service personnel.

Results:

Qualitative content analysis extracted 8 categories, 2 main categories of “Informational needs of companions” and “Educational needs of companions” and a final theme of “the need for knowing.”

Conclusions:

According to the results, “the need for knowing” is one of the most important needs of the patients’ companions during hospitalization. Knowing companions’ needs in the hospital and understanding its deficiencies would assist health care professionals, especially authorities, in providing high-quality care and developing programs to meet the informational needs of patients’ companions.

Patients' experiences and satisfaction about care provided by male nurses in medical surgical units in Islamabad, Pakistan: A pilot study

BACKGROUND

Nursing is predominantly a female profession and caring has been considered an attribute of female nurses, which could imply a noncaring image of male nurses.

AIM

To determine patients' experiences and satisfaction from care provided by male nurses in a private hospital in Islamabad, Pakistan.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study included a purposive sample of 50 patients admitted to medical surgical units for at least 2 days and who had at least three professional interactions with a male nurse. The Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scale was used for data collection. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis.

RESULTS

The total score for experience and satisfaction was 81 and 51, respectively. A statistically significant difference existed between experience and satisfaction scores of male and female participants, indicating that males were more pleased and satisfied with their experience of receiving care from male nurses compared to the female participants.

CONCLUSION

The male nurses were concerned for their patients, they were knowledgeable about the patients' condition and care, and provided them with clear explanations of the medical and nursing procedures. However, they seem to lack interpersonal relationship with patients and did not take initiative in understanding their patients.

Care quality instruments

PURPOSE

The purpose of this paper is to describe instruments used for quality assessment in acute care. Quality care assessment is essential for improving care delivery. Quality instruments can be used to evaluate nurse and patient perspectives in multi-professional care. Therefore, valid and reliable measurement instruments are vital.

DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH

A literature search identified several instruments that measure quality from a nurse and patient perspectives. The questionnaires were appraised in several steps with specific criteria: psychometric properties, underlying construct or test theory, study context, sample characteristics and target population.

FINDINGS

Overall, 14 instruments were evaluated, but only eight questionnaires represented nurse and patient views regarding quality. Instruments showed several disparities in their theoretical foundations and their psychometric properties. Two instruments did not provide validity data and one questionnaire did not report reliability data.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS

To inform healthcare managers about acute care quality, the authors demonstrated the need for more valid and reliable measurements by using the Guidelines for Critiquing Instrument Development and Validation Reports to evaluate quality care instruments' psychometric properties.

ORIGINALITY/VALUE

There is a long tradition in quality care evaluations using questionnaires. Only a few instruments can be recommended for practical use.

A Cross-Sectional Study to Examine Factors Associated with Primary Health Care Service Utilization among Older Adults in the Irbid Governorate of Jordan

Background. Recently, the percentage of older adults in developing countries has increased significantly. Objective. This study examined patterns and factors associated with primary health care services utilization in the past 1, 6, and 12 months. Method. A cross-sectional study design was used to collect data from 190 older adults in the Irbid governorate of Jordan. Results. Primary health care services were used by less than half of the participants in the past 1 month, by 68.4% in the past 6 months, and by 73.8% in the past 12 months. Primary health care (PHC) services use was associated with age, education level, tobacco use, chronic illnesses, perceived general health status today, a physical component summary score, employment, and perceived general health status in the past 6 and 12 months. The primary predictor of PHC services use at 1, 6, and 12 months was chronic illnesses (OR = 13.32), (OR = 19.63), and (OR = 17.91), respectively. Conclusion. Although many factors were associated with PHC service utilization, the strongest predictor of PHC service utilization was chronic illnesses.

[Translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the newcastle satisfaction with nursing scales into the Brazilian culture]

This study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scales for use in Brazil, and to assess its usability. The instrument contains two scales and aims to assess the patient's experiences and level of satisfaction with nursing care. The methodological procedure of cultural adaptation followed the steps: translation, synthesis, back-translation, assessment by an expert committee, and pre-test. The process of translation and cultural adaptation was considered adequate. The committee assessment resulted in simple grammatical modifications for most of the items, and 40 subjects were considered for the pre-test. The Brazilian version of the Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scales demonstrated adequate content validity and was easily understood by the group of subjects. However, this is a study that precedes the evaluation of the psychometric properties of the instrument, whose results will be presented in a later publication.

Validation of the Brazilian Version of the Newcastle Satisfaction With Nursing Scales: A Partial Least Squares Path Modeling Approach

Background and Purpose: Assessing patient satisfaction requires reliable and valid instruments. This study evaluated the reliability and validity of the Brazilian version of the Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scales (B-NSNS). Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 351 adult inpatients. Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) approach was used to evaluate the reliability and validity of this instrument. Results: After the adjustments of model, both constructs exhibited adequate convergent and discriminant validity, showing that experiences with nursing care have a significant effect on patient satisfaction (r = .70) and account for 49.1% of the variance in patient satisfaction with the nursing care (R2 = 0.49). Conclusions: The B-NSNS result in a valid and reliable measure for use in managing nursing care.

The Relationship Between Surgical Patients and Nurses Characteristics With Their Perceptions of Caring Behaviors

The purpose of this European survey was to examine the relationship of surgical patients’ and nurses’ personal characteristics with their perceptions of caring behaviors. Caring Behaviors Inventory (CBI) was completed by convenience samples of 1,659 patients and 1,195 nurses from six countries of Europe. The results showed that the older the patients, the more positive were their evaluations of CBI. Those with planned admission and good/very good health conditions gave higher ratings compared to those with an emergency and poor health conditions. Type of admission, age, and health conditions explained 5.2% of CBI variance. Nurses with more work experience and experience in the unit gave significantly higher ratings compared to nurses with less experience. Nurses’ total experience and gender explained 2.3% of the variance of perceived care. Therefore, in a multinational surgical environment, caring behaviors may be influenced by other variables, better captured by using different research methods.

Measuring patient satisfaction with the Polish version of the Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scale

The measurement of patients' satisfaction is increasingly becoming legal and ethical duty of healthcare providers worldwide. Till now, there were no validated, widely available Polish scales to assess patients' satisfaction with nursing care. The aim of this study was to assess the experiences and satisfaction with nursing care of patients hospitalized in surgical and nonsurgical wards in Poland using Polish version of the Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scale. This is a multicentre, cross-sectional, descriptive study. Eight hospitals were qualified to participate in a convenience manner. The correlations between variables were analysed using the Mann-Whitney or the Kruskal-Wallis tests. In the case of a significant correlation, the Dunn's test was used to conduct multiple comparisons for the group of variables. A significance of α = 0.05 was assumed for the tests. A total 918 patients participated in the study, and 787 (85.72%) questionnaires were correctly filled out. The average result on the 'experience' scale was 73.22 (Me 73.07) and on the 'satisfaction' scale, 74.98 (Me 76.31). Education levels did not affect the experiences of nursing care levels p = 0.2204 and satisfaction with nursing care p = 0.1075. Patient age had a statistically significant impact on the results of the 'experiences of nursing care' scale p = 0.0005 and the 'satisfaction with nursing' scale p = 0.0194. The experiences of nursing care (p = 0.0002) and patients satisfaction (p = 0.0000) were significantly higher in surgical wards than in nonsurgical wards. The experiences of nursing care were significantly lower in the university hospital than in provincial hospitals (p = 0.0374) and district hospitals (p = 0.0183). A comparison of patient satisfaction with nursing in various hospitals shows that patients were most satisfied in district hospitals (average 78.10, Me 82.89), followed by provincial hospitals (average 72.11, Me 76.31) and the university hospital (average 70.64, Me 71.05).

Satisfação do paciente em uma unidade de gastroenterologia

OBJETIVOS: Avaliar a satisfação do paciente com os cuidados de enfermagem recebidos e verificar se existem diferenças em relação às variáveis do estudo. MÉTODOS: Trata-se de um estudo descritivo de abordagem quantitativa, uma amostra convencional de 63 pacientes, realizado na unidade de gastroenterologia de um hospital de ensino do interior do Estado de São Paulo. Para a coleta de dados, utilizou-se o Instrumento de Satisfação do Paciente (ISP). RESULTADOS: Os pacientes relataram alto nível de satisfação para todos os itens e domínios do ISP, resultando em consistência interna satisfatória em todos os domínios. As variáveis sexo, nível de escolaridade e tempo de permanência na unidade influenciaram positivamente a satisfação do paciente. CONCLUSÃO: Destaca-se a importância de se conhecer a satisfação do paciente com os cuidados de enfermagem, o que possibilita ao enfermeiro avaliar e planejar a assistência no sentido de atender as necessidades da clientela atendida.
