Self-monitoring and the use of consensus information

Abstract and concrete self-evaluative goals

Assuming that people often hold the abstract goal of acquiring accurate feedback but recognize that acquiring favorable feedback can make the self-evaluative process more comfortable, the authors posited that low-level construals (of how action is performed) would elicit greater self-enhancement motivation than would high-level construals (of why action is performed). Individuals chronically using low-level construals had greater interest in downward social comparison (DSC) and less interest in negative feedback (NF; Studies 1 and 3). Decreases in temporal distance (which foster low-level construals) also elicited greater interest in DSC and less interest in NF (Studies 2 and 4). The latter effect was explained by participants' aversion to inconvenience (Study 5) and not by approach-avoidance conflict (Study 6). These results suggest that the level of abstraction at which people construe self-evaluative situations can influence their feedback preferences.

The Association of Self-Monitoring with Self-Disclosure

While there are many studies of self-monitoring and self-disclosure independently, few studies have looked at their relationship. Such inquiry may help refine the definitions of these two complex constructs as well as clarify how interpersonal relationships are formed. For 100 undergraduate students at a small liberal arts college a small but significant negative correlation ( r = −.20) was found between scores on the Self-monitoring Scale and Self-disclosure Index. The men had significantly higher self-monitoring scores than the women, but not on self-disclosure.

Factors affecting the accuracy of facial affect recognition

The effect of subjects' locus of control of reinforcement and self-monitoring orientations on their ability to identify the emotional meaning of facial expressions was evaluated under competitive and noncompetitive instructions. On the basis of social learning principles, it was predicted that internally controlled, high-self-monitoring American college students would be the most accurate; the results confirmed the prediction. The impact of locus of control and self-monitoring orientations was greatest on male subjects who had received competitive instructions. In addition, female subjects were more accurate than male subjects, and positive emotions were more often correctly identified than negative ones.

Concern for appropriateness as a moderator variable in the statistical explanation of self-reported use of alcohol and marijuana

Two studies examine the Concern for Appropriateness Scale (Lennox & Wolfe, 1984) as a likely moderator of dispositional and environmental variables associated with self-reported use of alcohol and marijuana by college and precollege students. In Study 1, data from 408 upper division students show that concern score interacts significantly with religiosity in analyses of use of both drugs, but not with any of 11 other dispositional variables nor with drug-specific environment predictors in analyses of use of either drug. In Study 2, data from 242 recent high school graduates show that concern score interacts significantly with religiosity and drug-specific environment in the explanation of alcohol use but not in the explanation of marijuana use. All of the significant interactions are in the predicted direction. Results therefore suggest that the concern scale is valid for some of its intended purposes.
