Effects of male courtship and gonadal steroids on pair formation, egg-laying, and serum LH in Canvasback ducks (Aythya valisineria)

High progesterone during avian meiosis biases sex ratios toward females

Evidence of altered primary sex ratios in birds shows that mothers can manipulate the sex of their offspring before oviposition. In birds, females are the heterogametic sex (ZW) and males are homogametic (ZZ). Sex is determined in the first meiotic division, when one sex chromosome is retained in the oocyte and the other segregates to the polar body. Altered primary sex ratios suggest that birds may be capable of biasing the segregation of sex chromosomes during meiosis I. During the time of meiosis I, follicular steroid production is limited primarily to progesterone (P4). We experimentally manipulated the levels of P4 in female domestic chickens during the approximate time of meiosis I. We advanced the ovulation of the first egg of a sequence (or clutch) with a subcutaneous injection of P4. We found a significant effect of P4 dose on the sex of the resulting egg. The high progesterone group produced 25% males whereas the low progesterone group produced 61% males and the control group produced 63% males in the first ovulation of the sequence. We propose that variation in maternal progesterone during the critical time for genetic sex determination is the mechanism for primary sex ratio manipulation in birds.

The role of sex steroids in courtship, pairing and pairing behaviors in the socially monogamous zebra finch

The purpose of this study was to test whether sex steroid actions are necessary for courtship and pairing in socially monogamous birds. We examined the effects of an aromatase inhibitor, 1,4,6-androstatriene-3,17-dione (ATD), combined with an anti-androgen, flutamide (F), on the behavior and pairing status of initially unpaired male and female zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). In the first experiment, 24 adult males were implanted with either a combination of ATD and flutamide or empty implants. Two weeks after implantation, birds were housed in aviaries containing 3 ATD + F males, 3 control males, and 3 females and allowed 2 weeks to pair, with observations 7 times during the 2-week period. A second experiment tested the effects of these same treatments in females. During the first 4 days of testing, ATD + F males were less likely to attack conspecifics than were control males. ATD + F males were also less likely to "greet," or approach, females than were control males, but other courtship behaviors, including directed singing, were unaffected. ATD + F females did not differ from control females on any courtship behavior measured. Furthermore, these treatments did not affect pairing behaviors (time spent clumping or in a nest box together) or the likelihood of pairing with a partner of the opposite sex. ATD + F treatments in females did, however, increase the likelihood of same-sex pairing. This suggests that, although sex steroids may regulate some courtship behaviors in males, they do not regulate pairing behaviors and have little effect on the likelihood that a male or female will be chosen as a mate by a bird of the opposite sex.

Hormonal and behavioral responses of starlings during a confrontation with males or females at nest boxes during the reproductive season

We investigated in an aviary experiment the behavioral and hormonal responses of European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) that were moved from a same sex group to an aviary containing either a nest box alone, a nest box and another male, or a nest box and a female. Luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone (T) levels increased significantly and independently of the situation, suggesting that nest boxes were the most important stimulus affecting the levels of these hormones. Some birds occupied more than two boxes (winners), and others a single or no box (losers). Levels of T increased less in males that did not acquire a nest box. However, the increase in LH was similar in all males after the test. Singing was positively correlated with T levels. Winners started singing earlier and sang more during a contest than losers. In the presence of females LH increased more in winners than in losers, while the increase in T was similar in both groups. In females, there was no increase in T but LH increased in the presence of males. Levels were higher in females paired with winners than in females paired with losers. Finally, winners advertised their nest boxes more frequently than losers. These results indicate that within a relatively short time frame levels of LH and T increase following the transfer from a flock to a territorial situation and can react independently from each other depending on reproductive circumstances. For males, the possession of a nest box and, for females, the qualities of the male seemed to be the most important factors stimulating reproduction.

Wood duck hatch date: relationship to pairing chronology, plasma luteinizing hormone, and steroid hormones during autumn and winter

We examined variation in courtship activity and hormone levels of male and female wood ducks (Aix sponsa) in relation to hatch date. Young wood ducks were assigned in groups of 8 (4 males and 4 females) to 4 experimental pens; 2 pens contained early-hatched ducks (3-12 April) and 2 pens contained late-hatched ducks (7-16 June). Courtship behaviors occurred less frequently in October and November than in December and January-February for both early- and late-hatched groups. Early-hatched wood ducks participated in courtship more frequently and formed pair bonds sooner than late-hatched individuals. Testosterone (T) and androstenedione (AD) levels of males did not differ between treatment groups; however, average levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) were greater for early-hatched males. Differences in LH occurred in 2 of 12 samples (6 October and 3 November); otherwise, LH did not vary by treatment. Levels of T and LH in males varied temporally, but there was no significant temporal variation in AE levels. Temporal variation in hormone levels was similar for early- and late-hatched males. Estradiol (E), progesterone (P), and LH levels of females did not differ between treatment groups. There was temporal variation in levels of E and LH, but not of P; this variation was similar for early- and late-hatched females. These data indicate that behavioral differences occurring temporally and between early- and late-hatched wood ducks were not related to corresponding differences in hormone levels.

Vernal increases in prolactin levels of nonbreeding male and female canvasbacks (Aythya valisineria)

Serum levels of prolactin were determined in nonbreeding male and female canvasbacks (Aythya valisineria) from mid-April to late June to evaluate the temporal changes occurring during spring. During this time interval, serum prolactin levels increased 1.5- to 2-fold in both males and nonlaying females (P less than 0.01). Serum prolactin levels of males and females exposed to natural lighting and temperature at Delta, Manitoba (50 degrees 11'N, 98 degrees 19'W), steadily increased from mid-April when the daylength was 14 hr light and peaked in mid-June when daylength was 16.25 hr light. Administration of exogenous estradiol via slow-release subdermally implanted capsules in females with intact reproductive systems had a marginal effect on reducing the seasonal increase in prolactin. Exogenous testosterone in similar slow-release capsules implanted subdermally in males had no influence on circulating prolactin levels.
