Variation in body temperature is related to ambient temperature but not experimental manipulation of insulation in two small endotherms with different thermoregulatory patterns

Avian Heterothermy: A Review of Patterns and Processes

Many birds reduce rest-phase energy demands through heterothermy, physiological responses involving facultative, reversible reductions in metabolic rate and body temperature (Tb). Here, we review the phylogenetic distribution and ecological contexts of avian heterothermy. Heterothermy has been reported in 140 species representing 15 orders and 39 families. Recent work supports the view that deep heterothermy is most pronounced in phylogenetically older taxa whereas heterothermy in passerines and other recently diverged taxa is shallower and confined to minimum Tb > 20°C. The reasons why deep heterothermy is absent in passerines remain unclear; we speculate an evolutionary trade-off may exist between the capacity to achieve low heterothermic Tb and the tolerance of hyperthermic Tb. Inter- and intraspecific variation in heterothermy is correlated with factors including foraging ecology (e.g., territoriality and defense of food resources among hummingbirds), food availability and foraging opportunities (e.g., lunar phase predicts torpor use in caprimulgids), and predation risk. Heterothermy also plays a major role before and during migration. Emerging questions include the magnitude of energy savings associated with heterothermy among free-ranging birds, the role phylogenetic variation in the capacity for heterothermy has played in evolutionary radiations into extreme habitats, and how the capacity for heterothermy affects avian vulnerability to rapid anthropogenic climate change.

High temperatures are associated with reduced cognitive performance in wild southern pied babblers

Global temperatures are increasing rapidly. While considerable research is accumulating regarding the lethal and sublethal effects of heat on wildlife, its potential impact on animal cognition has received limited attention. Here, we tested wild southern pied babblers (Turdoides bicolor) on three cognitive tasks (associative learning, reversal learning and inhibitory control) under naturally occurring heat stress and non-heat stress conditions. We determined whether cognitive performance was explained by temperature, heat dissipation behaviours, individual and social attributes, or proxies of motivation. We found that temperature, but not heat dissipation behaviours, predicted variation in associative learning performance. Individuals required on average twice as many trials to learn an association when the maximum temperature during testing exceeded 38°C compared with moderate temperatures. Higher temperatures during testing were also associated with reduced inhibitory control performance, but only in females. By contrast, we found no temperature-related decline in performance in the reversal learning task, albeit individuals reached learning criterion in only 14 reversal learning tests. Our findings provide novel evidence of temperature-mediated cognitive impairment in a wild animal and indicate that its occurrence depends on the cognitive trait examined and individual sex.

Adaptive variation in the upper limits of avian body temperature

Physiological performance declines precipitously at high body temperature (T_b), but little attention has been paid to adaptive variation in upper T_b limits among endotherms. We hypothesized that avian maximum tolerable T_b (T_bmax) has evolved in response to climate, with higher T_bmax in species exposed to high environmental heat loads or humidity-related constraints on evaporative heat dissipation. To test this hypothesis, we compared T_bmax and related variables among 53 bird species at multiple sites in South Africa with differing maximum air temperature (T_air) and humidity using a phylogenetically informed comparative framework. Birds in humid, lowland habitats had comparatively high T_bmax (mean ± SD = 45.60 ± 0.58 °C) and low normothermic T_b (T_bnorm), with a significantly greater capacity for hyperthermia (T_bmax - T_bnorm gradient = 5.84 ± 0.77 °C) compared with birds occupying cool montane (4.97 ± 0.99 °C) or hot arid (4.11 ± 0.84 °C) climates. Unexpectedly, T_bmax was significantly lower among desert birds (44.65 ± 0.60 °C), a surprising result in light of the functional importance of hyperthermia for water conservation. Our data reveal a macrophysiological pattern and support recent arguments that endotherms have evolved thermal generalization versus specialization analogous to the continuum among ectothermic animals. Specifically, a combination of modest hyperthermia tolerance and efficient evaporative cooling in desert birds is indicative of thermal specialization, whereas greater hyperthermia tolerance and less efficient evaporative cooling among species in humid lowland habitats suggest thermal generalization.

Avian thermoregulation in the heat: efficient evaporative cooling in two southern African nightjars

Nightjars represent a model taxon for investigating physiological limits of heat tolerance because of their habit of roosting and nesting in sunlit sites during the heat of the day. We investigated the physiological responses of Rufous-cheeked nightjars (Caprimulgus rufigena) and Freckled nightjars (Caprimulgus tristigma) to high air temperatures (T _a) by measuring body temperature (T _b), resting metabolic rate (RMR) and total evaporative water loss (TEWL) at T _a ranging from 10 to 56 °C. Both species became hyperthermic at T _a > T _b. Lower critical limits of thermoneutrality occurred at T _a between 35 and 37 °C, whereas we detected no clear upper critical limits of thermoneutrality. Between T _a ≈ 37.0 and 39.9 °C, rates of TEWL increased rapidly with T _a. At T _a ≥ 40 °C, fractional increases in mass-specific TEWL rates were 78-106% of allometric predictions. Increasing evaporative heat dissipation incurred only small metabolic costs, with the RMR of neither species ever increasing by more than 20% above thermoneutral values. Consequently, both species displayed extremely efficient evaporative cooling; maximum evaporative heat dissipation was equivalent to 515% of metabolic heat production (MHP) at T _a ≈ 56 °C in C. rufigena and 452% of MHP at T _a ≈ 52 °C in C. tristigma. Our data reiterate that caprimulgids have evolved an efficient mechanism of evaporative cooling via gular fluttering, which minimizes metabolic heat production at high T _a and reduces total heat loads. This likely aids in reducing TEWL rates and helps nightjars cope with some of the most thermally challenging conditions experienced by any bird.

Shaving increases daily energy expenditures in free living root voles

Experimental manipulation of energy expenditure has long been recognized as an effective means for identifying causative effects and avoiding confounded interpretations arising from spurious correlations. This approach has been successfully applied mainly in studies on birds, particularly on reproducing adults, while manipulations in mammals have proved more problematic. Here we tested the hypothesis that shaving off 50% of the dorsal pelage should effectively increase energy expenditure in the wild root voles (Microtus oeconomus) in their natural environment. We measured daily energy expenditures (DEE), using doubly labelled water (DLW), in shaved and unshaved voles at the beginning of winter. The difference in DEE (corrected for body mass and year effects) between experimental and control group fluctuated from 11.5% to 17.3%. Probability of recapture over the 3-days DEE assay was strongly dependent on body mass but did not differ between shaved and unshaved animals, however the prevalence of larger (heavier) shaved individuals was observed. Shaved animals lost more weight between the release and recapture. Shaving therefore appears an effective method of increasing costs of total daily energy expenditures in wild endotherms in their natural environment.
