Effects of a fluoride etchant on resin bonding to titanium-aluminum-niobium alloy

Chemical etching of CAD-CAM glass-ceramic-based materials using fluoride solutions for bonding pretreatment

The surface treatment of glass-ceramic-based materials, namely, lithium disilicate glass (IPS e.max CAD), feldspar porcelain (VITABLOCS Mark II), and a polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (VITA ENAMIC), using aqueous fluoride solutions and their influence on luting agent bonding were investigated. Six experimental aqueous fluoride solutions were applied to these materials, and their effects were assessed by surface topological analysis. The obtained results were compared using non-parametric statistical analyses. Ammonium hydrogen fluoride (AHF) etchant demonstrated the greatest etching effect. Subsequent experiments focused on evaluating different concentrations of the AHF etchant for the bonding pretreatment of glass-ceramic-based materials with a luting agent (PANAVIA V5). AHF, particularly at concentrations above 5 wt%, effectively roughened the surfaces of the materials and improved the bonding performance. Notably, AHF at a concentration of 30 wt% exhibited a more pronounced effect on both etching and bonding capabilities compared to hydrofluoric acid.

Dental Alloy Adhesive Primers and Bond Strength at Alloy-Resin Interface: A Systematic Review and Meta-analyses

AIM

The present systematic review aimed to report the studies concerning the primers in improving bond strength and identifying pertinent primers for a particular dental alloy by adhering to PRISMA precepts.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

PubMed and Semantic Scholar databases were scoured for articles using 10 search terms. In vitro studies satisfying the inclusion criteria were probed which were meticulously screened and scrutinized for eligibility adhering to the 11 exclusion criteria. The quality assessment tool for in vitro studies (QUIN Tool) containing 12 criteria was employed to assess the risk of bias (RoB).

RESULTS

A total of 48 studies assessing shear bond strength (SBS) and 15 studies evaluating tensile bond strength (TBS) were included in the qualitative synthesis. Concerning SBS, 33.4% moderate and 66.6% high RoB was observed. Concerning TBS, 26.8% moderate and 73.2% high RoB was discerned. Seventeen and two studies assessing SBS and TBS, respectively, were included in meta-analyses.

CONCLUSIONS

Shear bond strength and TBS increased for the primed alloys. Cyclic disulfide primer is best-suited for noble alloys when compared with thiol/thione primers. Phosphoric acid- and phosphonic acid ester-based primers are opportune for base alloys.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The alloy-resin interface (ARI) would fail if an inappropriate primer was selected. Therefore, the selection of an appropriate alloy adhesive primer for an alloy plays a crucial role in prosthetic success. This systematic review would help in the identification and selection of a congruous primer for a selected alloy.

Bonding of resin luting materials to titanium and titanium alloy

Recently in Japan, due to the increased prices of palladium and gold, cast titanium restorations have been included in the Japanese national health insurance system. The purpose of this review was to survey the available literature on titanium bonding systems, focusing on the adhesive monomer in the luting agent in order to expand the application of resin-bonded fixed prostheses made of titanium or titanium alloys. It was found that adhesive monomers are effective for bonding to titanium, and provide results equal to the procedures of silanization and tribochemical silica coating. A primer or a luting agent, including 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP), methacryloyloxyalkyl thiophosphate derivative (MEPS), 6-methacryloxyhexyl phosphonoacetate (6-MHPA), and 4-methacryloyloxyethl trimellitate anhydride (4-META) promotes bonding characteristics between titanium and the resin material.

Effect of water storage on the flexural strength of four self-etching adhesive resin cements and on the dentin-titanium shear bond strength mediated by them

AIM

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of water storage on the flexural strength (σf) of four self-etching adhesive resin cements (SEARC) and on the dentin-titanium shear bond strength (SBS) mediated by them.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The selected SEARC were Rely X Unicem, G-Cem, Maxcem, and SmartCem2. For each material, 50 bars (2×2×25 mm) were made and stored in water at 37°C for 1 hour, 1 day, 7 days, 30 days, and 60 days before σf was determined via a three-point bend test. Titanium cylinders were bonded to freshly exposed human dentin surfaces using the selected cements. Fifty samples were obtained for each SEARC and were stored in water at 37°C for 1 hour, 1 day, 7 days, 30 days, and 60 days before SBS was determined. The results were statistically analyzed using two-way analysis of variance followed by Scheffé multiple means comparisons (α=0.05). Pearson's correlation coefficient between σf and SBS was determined.

RESULTS

Significantly different σf and SBS values were obtained for the four cements. With regards to the effect of water storage, the σf of all materials increased during the first 7 days, was not significantly different between materials by 30 days, and then remained relatively constant or decreased for SmartCem2; SBS was not affected by water storage, with the exception of Maxcem, where a significant drop in SBS was detected after 1 day and no deterioration thereafter. No correlation was found between σf and SBS.

CONCLUSIONS

Under the experimental conditions of this study, 60 days of water storage negatively affected the σf of SmartCem2 but did not negatively affect the SEARC-mediated dentin-titanium SBS (Maxcem showed a significant drop in SBS after 1 day but no deterioration thereafter). The dentin-titanium adherence afforded by Rely X and G-Cem was significantly higher than that of Maxcem and SmartCem2.

Effect of metal primers on bond strength of resin cements to base metals

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

A strong and durable bond between a metal framework and a resin-based luting agent is desired. Metal primers have been shown to be very effective on noble alloys. However, there is insufficient information about their effect on base metals.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of metal primers on the shear bond strength of resin cements to base metals.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 160 cast commercially pure titanium (CP Ti) and NiCr alloy (VeraBond II) disks were embedded in a polyvinyl chloride ring, and their surfaces were smoothed with silicon carbide papers (320, 400, and 600 grit) and airborne-particle abraded with 50-mum aluminum oxide. Specimens of each metal were divided into 4 groups (n=20), which received one of the following luting techniques: (1) Panavia F, (2) Alloy Primer plus Panavia F, (3) Bistite II DC, or (4) Metaltite plus Bistite II DC. Forty minutes after preparation, all specimens were stored in distilled water at 37 degrees C for 24 hours and then thermal cycled (1000 cycles, 5-55 degrees C). After thermal cycling, the specimens were stored in 37 degrees C distilled water for an additional 24 hours or 6 months before being tested in shear mode. Data (MPa) were analyzed using 3-way ANOVA and the post hoc Tukey test (alpha=.05). Each specimen was examined under an optical microscope (x30), and the failure mode was classified as adhesive, cohesive, or a combination of these.

RESULTS

The only significant difference between the Panavia F and Alloy Primer plus Panavia F groups occurred in the NiCr alloy at 24 hours, at which point Panavia F demonstrated superior bond strength compared to Alloy Primer plus Panavia F (P<.001). The Bistite II DC and Metaltite plus Bistite II DC groups were not significantly different. The Bistite II DC and Metaltite plus Bistite II DC groups demonstrated significantly lower bond strength to CP Ti (P<.001) than the Panavia F and Alloy Primer plus Panavia F groups, and significantly lower bond strength to NiCr alloy (P<.001) than Panavia F. The Panavia F (P<.01) and Alloy Primer plus Panavia F groups' bond strength to titanium presented a significant increase (P<.001) in shear bond strength at 6 months. In general, the groups exhibited higher shear bond strength to CP Ti than to NiCr alloy (P<.01). The failure mode was 100% adhesive for all groups.

CONCLUSIONS

The metal primers did not promote an increase in adhesive bonding of resin cements to NiCr alloy and to CP Ti. Water storage had no adverse effect on the shear bond strength of the groups. The shear bond strengths to titanium were significantly higher than those to the NiCr alloy.

Comparison of Four Fluoride Etchants in Bonding between Titanium and a Self-curing Luting Agent

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the efficacy of four different fluoride etchants in titanium bonding. The etchants were aqueous solutions of 5 wt% sodium fluoride (NaF), ammonium fluoride (NH4F), sodium hydrogen fluoride (NaFHF), and ammonium hydrogen fluoride (NH4FHF). Cast specimens of commercially pure titanium were air-abraded with alumina, etched for 30 seconds, and then primed with a phosphate primer. An acrylic rod was bonded to the specimen with a tri-n-butylborane-initiated self-curing luting agent. Shear bond strengths were determined before and after 10,000 thermocycles. Regarding pre-thermocycling bond strength, there were no significant differences among the etchants. After thermocycling, there was a decrease in bond strength for all groups. Nonetheless, the bond strengths of NaFHF and NH4FHF were significantly higher than those of NaF, NH4F, and non-etched control. In terms of bonding durability between resin and titanium, it was significantly improved when the titanium surface was microscopically roughened with alumina blasting and etching using NaFHF or NH4FHF.

Effect of an acidulated fluoride etchant on bonding between titanium and two luting materials

Adhesive bonding between resin and titanium is useful for resin-bonded prostheses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of an etchant, consisting of ammonium hydrogen fluoride (AHF) and phosphoric acid (PA), in titanium bonding. Cast specimens of commercially pure titanium were air-abraded with alumina and etched for 30 s, after which a primer (ALP) was applied. An acrylic rod was bonded to the specimen with one of the two luting agents being examined (Super-Bond QUICK and Panavia F2.0). Shear bond strengths were determined following 10,000 thermocycles. When Panavia F2.0 was applied, neither the etchant nor the ALP primer showed significant effect on bond strength. The postthermocycling bond strength of Super-Bond QUICK was significantly improved with the use of an etchant and ALP primer. Although microscopic observation revealed that considerable numbers of submicron pits were created on the specimens etched using AHF with PA, no significant difference in bond strength was detected in the application of AHF, with or without PA. The present findings suggested that the improved bonding durability was due to the micromechanical retention between the resin and the microscopically roughened titanium surface.
