IDENTIFYING ACETICLASTIC AND HYDROGENOTROPHIC METHANOGENS IN PSYCHROPHILIC AND MESOPHILIC GRANULAR SLUDGES TREATING SYNTHETIC SEWAGE BY MEANS OF FISH AND CSLM

Performance Analysis and Microbial Community Evolution of In Situ Biological Biogas Upgrading with Increasing H2/CO2 Ratio

The effect of the amount of hydrogen supplied for the in situ biological biogas upgrading was investigated by monitoring the process and evolution of the microbial community. Two parallel reactors, operated at 37°C for 211 days, were continuously fed with sewage sludge at a constant organic loading rate of 1.5 gCOD∙(L∙d)⁻¹ and hydrogen (H₂). The molar ratio of H₂/CO₂ was progressively increased from 0.5 : 1 to 7 : 1 to convert carbon dioxide (CO₂) into biomethane via hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis. Changes in the biogas composition become statistically different above the stoichiometric H₂/CO₂ ratio (4 : 1). At a H₂/CO₂ ratio of 7 : 1, the methane content in the biogas reached 90%, without adversely affecting degradation of the organic matter. The possibility of selecting, adapting, and enriching the original biomass with target-oriented microorganisms able to biologically convert CO₂ into methane was verified: high throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene revealed that hydrogenotrophic methanogens, belonging to Methanolinea and Methanobacterium genera, were dominant. Based on the outcomes of this study, further optimization and engineering of this process is feasible and needed as a means to boost energy recovery from sludge treatment.

Enhancing anaerobic treatment of domestic wastewater: State of the art, innovative technologies and future perspectives

Recent concerns over public health, environmental protection, and resource recovery have induced to look at domestic wastewater more as a resource than as a waste. Anaerobic treatment, owing to attractive advantages of energy saving, biogas recovery and lower sludge production, has been suggested as an alternative technology to the traditional practice of aerobic wastewater treatment, which is energy intensive, produces high excess of sludge, and fails to recover the potential resources available in wastewater. Sewage treatment by high-rate anaerobic processes has been widely reported over the last decades as an attractive method for providing a good quality effluent. Among the available high-rate anaerobic technologies, membrane bioreactors feature many advantages over aerobic treatment and conventional anaerobic systems, since high treatment efficiency, high quality effluent, pathogens retention and recycling of nutrients, were generally achieved. The objective of this paper is to review the currently available knowledge on anaerobic domestic wastewater treatment for the mostly applied high-rate systems and membrane bioreactors, presenting benefits and drawbacks, and focusing on the most promising emerging technologies, which need more investigation for their scale-up.

Optimizing anaerobic digestion by selection of the immobilizing surface for enhanced methane production

Maximizing methane production while maintaining an appreciable level of process stability is a crucial challenge in the anaerobic digestion industry. In this study, the role of six parameters: the type of immobilizing supports, loading rate, inoculum levels, C:N ratio, trace nutrients concentrations and mixing rate, on methane production were investigated under thermophilic conditions (55 ± 1°C) with synthetic substrate medium. The immobilizing supports were Silica gel, Sand, Molecular Sieve and Dowex Marathon beads. A Taguchi Design of Experiment (DOE) methodology was employed to determine the effects of different parameters using an L(16) orthogonal array. Overall, immobilizing supports influenced methane production substantially (contributing 61.3% of the observed variation in methane yield) followed by loading rate and inoculum which had comparable influence (17.9% and 17.7% respectively). Optimization improved methane production by 153% (from 183 to 463 ml CH(4)l(-1)d(-1)).

Fate of organic carbon in UAFB treating raw sewage: impact of moderate to low temperature

The anaerobic biological treatment of raw sewage under low ambient temperatures was investigated in an up-flow anaerobic fixed bed (UAFB) reactor, over a 220-day trial period. The operating temperature was lowered stepwisely from 35 to 25, 20 and 15°C. Obvious accumulation of acetic acid was observed in the effluent as the temperature dropped, which almost tripled at 15°C compared to that at 35°C. An interesting psychrophilic-forward-shift trend of methane production rate following the decrease of temperature was discovered. The methane yield at each trial was 169, 201, 256 and 269 L(STP) CH(4)/kg COD(removed). For each temperature trial, about 32.6%, 28.3%, 34.4% and 34.9% were removed in form of methane. Based on PCR-DGGE results, the band corresponded to Methanosphaera spp. only showed up on 15°C profile. Analysis of both methane production and DGGE results indicated that psychro-tolerant microorganisms dominated the archaeal populations in the UAFB under low-temperature.
