Natural kind and entitative beliefs in relation to prejudice toward mental disorders

How do children with Tourette's syndrome and their caregivers live with the disorder? A systematic review of qualitative evidence

Background

Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a childhood neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by sudden, repetitive, involuntary, and irregular muscle movement and vocalization. Recently, non-pharmaceutical methods, such as behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, and deep brain stimulation, have been introduced as alternatives to pharmacological treatment for TS. This study aimed to systematically review and synthesize qualitative evidence on the experiences of children with TS and their caregivers. A meta-synthesis of qualitative evidence could help provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges experienced by children with TS and their caregivers with the aim of providing more effective treatment and services for them.

Materials and methods

A systematic search was conducted using MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PsycARTICLES, and three Korean databases (Korean Medical Database, Research Information Sharing Service, and ScienceON) in July 2021. Studies were included if they collected and analyzed qualitative data from children with tic disorder or TS, or their caregivers. Qualitative research findings on the experiences and perspectives of children with TS and their caregivers were critically appraised and synthesized using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology.

Results

Eight eligible studies were included. The findings from these studies (i.e., themes or subthemes of qualitative research) were aggregated into categories (a group of similar findings) and synthesized findings (a group of categorized findings). Ultimately, the 60 findings were aggregated into 15 categories. Finally, four synthesized findings were derived from the 15 categories: (i) continuation of challenging daily life, (ii) denying that TS causes emotional distress, (iii) accepting and understanding TS as part of oneself, and (iv) looking to the future.

Conclusion

Children with TS and their caregivers experience physical and psychological distress and social deprivation. Avoiding and suppressing TS causes secondary distress such as guilt. However, seeking social support and accepting the disorder reduce the distress caused by symptoms and lays the foundation for later growth. Even in the face of adversity, children with TS and their caregivers find personal value and acquire a more open and optimistic attitude toward life. This review shows that acceptance-based therapy and social support should be provided for the treatment and management of TS.

Attitudes Towards Seeking Psychological Help: An Integrative Model Based on Contact, Essentialist Beliefs About Mental Illness, and Stigma

Based on intergroup contact theory, a proposed comprehensive model of attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help was tested, including both potential barriers to mental health help-seeking (i.e., public stigma and self-stigma of seeking help, prejudicial and essentialist beliefs about mental illness, intergroup anxiety) and potential facilitators (i.e., direct and extended contact with persons with mental illness). Relevant measures were completed by 119 community-dwelling participants. Path analysis showed that direct (but not extended) contact with mental illness, by reducing intergroup anxiety, led to less negative beliefs about mental illness and weaker essentialist beliefs about mental illness (the latter being directly and positively associated with negative beliefs about mental illness). Moreover, less negative beliefs about mental illness, by reducing perceptions of self (but not public) stigma of seeking psychological help, were related to more positive attitudes towards help-seeking. Results are discussed in the context of the (unintentional) adverse effects of biogenetic (essentialist) explanations of mental disorders, and the clinical implications regarding interventions that aim at improving help-seeking attitudes.

Benevolence Toward Schizophrenia Scale: Construction and evidence of validation

Abstract The aim of this study was to construct and seek evidence for the validity of the Escala de Benevolência frente à Esquizofrenia (Benevolence Toward Schizophrenia Scale). Two studies were conducted in Joao Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. Study 1 describes the development and evidence of the factor validity of the Benevolence Toward Schizophrenia Scale with a sample composed of 200 university students aged 16 to 51 years old (M = 25.31; SD = 7.21). The data were subjected to exploratory factor analysis, which revealed one single seven-item factor that explained 37.74% of the variance and a satisfactory Cronbach’s alpha (0.77). The aim of Study 2 was to test the goodness-of-fit of the Benevolence Toward Schizophrenia Scale factor structure with a sample composed of 200 university students aged 16 to 52 years old (M = 24.82; SD = 6.97). The one-factor structure exhibited adequate goodness-of-fit; the composite reliability value was 0.83, which indicates scale stability and satisfactory psychometric parameters for assessing benevolent prejudice toward schizophrenia.

CONCEPÇÕES DE USUÁRIOS DE UM CAPS SOBRE O TRATAMENTO E INCLUSÃO

Resumo Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar as concepções sobre o tratamento, encontradas nos discursos de usuários de um serviço substitutivo de saúde, bem como os sentidos por eles atribuídos à sua relação com a comunidade. Foi adotado o referencial teórico da Psicologia Social, particularmente da Teoria da Produção de Sentidos, que estuda a análise das práticas discursivas por um viés construcionista. Aplicou-se uma entrevista semiestruturada a homens e mulheres egressos de hospitais psiquiátricos e acompanhados pelo CAPS II, no município de XX, em uma amostra de dez participantes. Os depoimentos dos participantes mostraram a ênfase no conceito de doença, a atribuição de fatores externos como principais causas da doença mental e a percepção do hospital como um lugar de isolamento e maus-tratos. Mesmo com as novas formas de tratamento proporcionadas pela Reforma Psiquiátrica, os sentimentos de exclusão e rejeição foram destacados pelos usuários.

Social Dominance Orientation and Discrimination against People with Schizophrenia: Evidence of Medicalization and Dangerousness Beliefs as Legitimizing Myths

Medicalizing beliefs about schizophrenia (biogenetic causes and psychiatric labels) are connected to the belief that people with schizophrenia are dangerous and to discriminating intentions towards them. In this research, we draw on the Social Dominance theory and we examine these beliefs as legitimizing myths that are connected to the individuals' social dominance orientation (SDO) and that legitimize discrimination. In total, 238 Humanities students participated in the current research (Mage = 20.4; SD = 3.03; 107 male and 131 female). A vignette presenting a person with schizophrenia symptoms that offered no labels or explanations about the depicted person's condition was presented to research participants. A structural equation modeling analysis was carried out, in order to confirm our hypotheses in accordance with social dominance theory. Participants' social dominance orientation (SDO) was associated with higher endorsement of medicalizing (β = .16, p < .01) and dangerousness beliefs (β = .22, p < .001). In turn, medicalizing beliefs were connected to dangerousness (β = .21, p < .001) and higher discriminating intentions, both for desired social distance (β = .15, p < .05) and for deprivation of sociopolitical rights (β = .14, p < .05). Dangerousness was highly associated with both these measures (β = .28, p < .001 and β = 43, p < .001 respectively) while SDO was not significantly associated with discriminating intentions. Our model showed good fit to the data. This study confirms the role of SDO in schizophrenia stigma and the fact that ideological and power factors underpin the stigma of schizophrenia.

Are people more prejudiced towards groups that are perceived as coherent? A meta-analysis of the relationship between out-group entitativity and prejudice

A meta-analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between out-group entitativity and prejudice. A quantitative analysis of 85 effect sizes from 33 independent samples showed a significant positive relationship between entitativity and prejudice (Fisher's z = .414, 95% CI [0.272, 0.557], p < .0001). Three possible moderators of the relationship between entitativity and prejudice were tested: conceptualization of the entitativity (essence-based entitativity scale, agency-based entitativity scale, common entitativity scale), the target of the prejudice, and the measures of prejudice (attitudes, emotions, behaviour towards out-group). Results demonstrated that out-group entitativity correlated with prejudice only when entitativity was conceptualized as an essence-based or common-based scale, and prejudice was measured as the attitude to the out-group. The target of prejudice does not moderate the relationship between entitativity and prejudice.
