Abstract
The impact of endothelial cell-specific molecule 1 (ESM1) on the initiation and progression of diverse cancers has been extensively studied, yet its regulatory mechanisms in relation to cervical cancer remain insufficiently understood. Through bioinformatics analysis, we revealed that ESM1 was highly expressed in cervical squamous cell carcinoma and endocervical adenocarcinoma (CESC) and correlated with dismal clinicopathological features. The activation of ESM1 is facilitated by the presence of oncogenic HPV E6 and E7. HPV E6 and E7 enhance the expression of ESM1 by diminishing the levels of miR-205-5p, which specifically targets the 3' untranslated region of ESM1 mRNA. In addition, we demonstrated that ESM1 facilitates aerobic glycolysis of cervical cancer cells via the Akt/mTOR pathway. Suppression of ESM1 led to a reduction in the expression of HIF-1α and multiple glycolytic enzymes. Taken together, our findings provide insights into the mechanisms by which HPV infections regulate oncogenes, thereby contributing to cervical carcinogenesis.

Abstract
Since the start of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, several biomarkers have been proposed to assess the diagnosis and prognosis of this disease. The present systematic review evaluated endocan (a marker of endothelial cell damage) as a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for COVID-19. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase were searched for studies comparing circulating endocan levels between COVID-19 cases and controls, and/or different severities/complications of COVID-19. Eight studies (686 individuals) were included, from which four reported significantly higher levels of endocan in COVID-19 cases compared with healthy controls. More severe disease was also associated with higher endocan levels in some of the studies. Studies reported higher endocan levels in patients who died from COVID-19, were admitted to an intensive care unit, and had COVID-19-related complications. Endocan also acted as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker with different cut-offs. In conclusion, endocan could be a novel diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for COVID-19. Further studies with larger sample sizes are warranted to evaluate this role of endocan.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular Disease is the leading cause of death in adult and pediatric patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and its pathogenesis involves the interaction of multiple pathways. As Inflammatory mechanisms play a critical role in the vascular disease of CKD pediatric patients, there are several biomarkers related to inflammation strongly associated with this comorbidity. OBJECTIVE This review provides available evidence on the link between several biomarkers and the pathophysiology of heart disease in patients with CKD. METHODS The data were obtained independently by the authors, who carried out a comprehensive and non-systematic search in PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, and SciELO databases. The search terms were "Chronic Kidney Disease", "Cardiovascular Disease", "Pediatrics", "Pathophysiology", "Mineral and Bone Disorder (MBD)", "Renin Angiotensin System (RAS)", "Biomarkers", "BNP", "NTproBNP", "CK-MB", "CXCL6", "CXCL16", "Endocan-1 (ESM-1)", "FABP3", "FABP4", h-FABP", "Oncostatin- M (OSM)", "Placental Growth Factor (PlGF)" and "Troponin I". RESULTS The pathogenesis of CKD-mediated cardiovascular disease is linked to inflammatory biomarkers, which play a critical role in the initiation, maintenance, and progression of cardiovascular disease. There are several biomarkers associated with cardiovascular disease in pediatric patients, including BNP, NTproBNP, CK-MB, CXCL6, CXCL16, Endocan-1 (ESM-1), FABP3, FABP4, Oncostatin- M (OSM), Placental Growth Factor (PlGF), and Troponin I. CONCLUSION The pathogenesis of CKD-mediated cardiovascular disease is not completely understood, but it is linked to inflammatory biomarkers. Further studies are required to elucidate the pathophysiological and potential role of these novel biomarkers.

Abstract
Endocan is a small soluble proteoglycan (PG) known to be involved in inflammation and angiogenesis. Increased endocan expression was found in the synovia of arthritic patients and chondrocytes stimulated with IL-1ß. Considering these findings, we aimed to investigate the effects of endocan knockdown on the modulation of pro-angiogenic molecules expression in a model of IL-1ß-induced inflammation in human articular chondrocytes. Endocan, VEGF-A, MMP-9, MMP-13, and VEGFR-2 expression was measured in both normal and endocan knockdown chondrocytes stimulated with IL-1ß. VEGFR-2 and NF-kB activation were also measured. Results have shown that endocan, VEGF-A, VEGFR-2, MMP-9, and MMP-13 were significantly up-regulated during IL-1ß-induced inflammation; interestingly, the expression of such pro-angiogenic molecules and NF-kB activation were significantly reduced by endocan knockdown. These data support the hypothesis that endocan released by activated chondrocytes may be involved in the mechanisms that stimulate cell migration and invasion, as well as angiogenesis, in the pannus of arthritic joints.

Abstract
Peptide phoenixin (PNX), endocan (EDC), and spexin (SPX) are associated with diabetes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the levels of PNX, EDC and SPX in the blood and aqueous humor (AH) of patient with type 2 diabetes with and without DRP and cataract. 30 type 2 diabetes patients with cataract (DM + C), 30 DRP patient with cataract (DRP + C), 30 non-diabetic patient with only cataract and 30 control participants were enrolled into this study. PNX, EDC, and SPX were measured in blood and AH by ELISA. In patients with DRP + C, the levels of PNX and EDC were significantly higher in both AH and blood samples compared with the group of patients without DRP + C (<0.05). Also, in patients with DM + C, the levels of PNX and EDC were higher in both AH and blood samples compared with the group of patients without DM + C. However, in patients with DRP + C, the levels of SPX were significantly lower in both AH and blood samples compared with the group of patients without DRP + C (<0.05). Also, in patients with DM + C, the levels of SPX were also lower in both AH and blood samples compared with the group of patients without DM + C. These findings suggest that increased PNX, EDC, and decreased SPX amounts in blood and AH of DM + C and DRP + C groups when compared with control and cataract groups show that they might have a role in the pathophysiology of DM + C, especially in the DRP + C.

Abstract
Endocan, previously called endothelial cell-specific molecule-1, is a soluble proteoglycan that is predominantly expressed in vascular endothelial cells of the lungs and kidneys. It is upregulated by proinflammatory cytokines and plays a critical role in inflammatory, proliferative, and neovascularization processes. The utility of endocan as a biomarker in a wide spectrum of diseases is being increasingly acknowledged. In this review, we summarize the current evidence concerning the role of endocan in kidney diseases, with emphasis on its prognostic and diagnostic value. It seems that the determination of plasma endocan levels may provide useful prognostic information in many types of renal failure such as chronic kidney disease, IgA nephropathy, and diabetic nephropathy. Endocan could additionally improve the early diagnostic evaluation of acute kidney disease, chronic renal allograft injury, and acute rejection after kidney transplantation, thus contributing to endothelial cell injury monitoring in a timely manner.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Beta-thalassemia minor is a blood disease caused by a hereditary decrease in beta-globin synthesis, frequently leading to hypochromic microcytic anemia. Formerly called endothelial cell-specific molecule 1, endocan is a proteoglycan released by vascular endothelial cells in many organs. Our aim was to investigate the relationship between the beta-thalassemia minor patients and the healthy control group in terms of serum endocan level. METHODS The study was performed in a total of 80 subjects. They were divided into two groups, the beta-thalassemia minor group (n=40) and the healthy control group (n=40). Serum endocan levels, age, sex, body mass index value, and tobacco use data of these groups were compared. RESULTS No statistically significant difference was detected between the two groups in terms of age, sex, and body mass index values (p>0.05). Endocan levels were measured to be 206.85±88.1 pg/mL in the beta-thalassemia minor group and 236.1±162.8 pg/mL in the control group with no significant difference between the groups in terms of serum endocan levels (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS In our study, there was no change in endocan level in beta-thalassemia minor. This might be because serum endocan levels are affected by multi-factorial reasons. Serum endocan levels may be altered secondarily to decreased beta-globin chain, increased sympathetic activity due to anemia, or platelet dysfunction induced by oxidative stress in beta-thalassemia minor. Further multicenter studies involving more patients are necessary to demonstrate this.

Abstract
There is considerable evidence that patients with inflammatory conditions are at higher risk of developing cardiovascular (CV) disease including carotid artery stenosis. CV disease accounts for 35-50% of the excess mortality in patients with inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, with cerebrovascular disease being the second leading cause of death. We review current evidence regarding the association of inflammatory conditions and specifically carotid artery disease. Clinical epidemiological observations suggest that mechanisms other than classic risk factors may promote accelerated atherogenesis in rheumatoid and other inflammatory arthritis and carotid artery disease is increased in individuals with these conditions. Additional studies to better understand the underlying mechanisms and targeted strategies to mitigate such risk are indicated. For now, lifestyle modifications, aggressive treatment of risk factors and lipid lowering therapy in appropriate individuals is indicated.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To consider the role of endocan as an inflammatory marker in cardiovascular diseases. RECENT FINDINGS Endocan, an endothelial inflammatory marker, is associated with cardiovascular disease. SUMMARY Vascular endothelial inflammation plays a key role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases by influencing thrombogenesis, tumour invasion and secretion of bioactive mediators. We discuss the role of endocan mainly in the context of cardiology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to assess endocan levels in patients with acromegaly who have active disease or disease in remission and to investigate a relation between endocan levels and endothelial dysfunction in these patients. DESIGN The study is a case-control study. Study was conducted at Istanbul Medeniyet University Goztepe Training and Research Hospital between 2013 and 2019. Patients who were older than 18 years with acromegaly diagnosis were recruited if they agreed to participate. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes (DM), hypertension (HT), hyperlipidemia, decompensated heart failure, immune or infectious diseases, moderate-severe valve disease and stage 3 or more advanced chronic kidney disease were excluded. There were 30 healthy control subjects who agreed to participate to the study. Patients with acromegaly were divided into two groups as: disease active patients and patients in remission. Serum endocan levels were measured with enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method endothelial function was assessed with flow mediated dilatation (FMD). RESULTS There were 85 patients included to the study. Twenty-three patients had active disease, 31 were in remission and 31 were healthy controls. FMD was higher in controls compared to patients in active disease and patients in remission (p < 0.001). There was no difference between patients with active disease for FMD and patients in remission (p = 0.088). There was statistically significant correlation between FMD and endocan and insulin like growth hormone-1 (IGF-1) levels of patients with acromegaly. As FMD increased endocan and IGF-1 decreased. A moderate negative relation between FMD and endocan was identified (p < 0.001, r:-0.409) as well as FMD and IGF-1 levels (p:0.011, r:-0.377). Along with endocan and IGF-1, DM, HT, sex, body mass index, age and uric acid were associated with changes in FMD. CONCLUSIONS Endocan levels and endothelial function measured with FMD have an inverse relationship. Endocan may prove to be a marker for endothelial dysfunction in acromegaly.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), largely represented by Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), alter gastrointestinal physiology and mucosal immunity through a complex inflammatory process. These diseases can lead to significant arterial endothelial dysfunction. There is also evidence linking IBD with a modification of cardiac structure and function. A growing body of research has associated IBD with an acceleration of arterial stiffness and atherosclerosis and an increased risk of cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality. The focus of this review is two-fold. Firstly, the literature on IBD in relation to CV dysfunction was evaluated (mainly based on 25 relevant surveys carried out between 2005 and 2018). The vast majority of these studies support a significant association of IBD with a deterioration in CV function. Secondly, the literature available regarding the effect of IBD treatment on CV dysfunction was considered based on studies published between 2007 and 2018. This literature search suggests that IBD treatment may have the potential to ameliorate CV dysfunction resulting in CV benefits. This review will analyse the literature as well as consider emerging research perspectives regarding how IBD treatment could improve CV dysfunction.

Abstract
Endocan, previously referred to as an endothelial-cell-specific molecule-1 (ESM-1) is a member of a proteoglycan family that is secreted by vascular endothelial cells of different organs, mainly lungs and kidneys. It is assumed to participate in endothelial activation and the triggering of inflammatory reactions, especially in microvasculatures. Thanks to its solubility in human fluids, i.e., urine and blood plasma, its stability and its low concentrations in physiological conditions, endocan has been proposed as an easily available, non-invasive biomarker for identifying and predicting the course of many diseases. Recently, endocan has been studied in relation to kidney diseases. In general, endocan levels have been linked to worse clinical outcomes of renal dysfunction; however, results are conflicting and require further evaluation. In this review, authors summarize available knowledge regarding the role of endocan in pathogenesis and progression of selected kidney diseases.

Abstract
The endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndoMT) is involved in the complex pathogenesis of renal fibrosis. The soluble proteoglycan endothelial cell-specific molecule 1 (ESM1) is significantly upregulated in many tumor cells and cirrhosis-related disease. The role of ESM1 in renal fibrosis is unknown. This study investigates the role of ESM1 in renal fibrosis, using an in vivo unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) mouse model of renal fibrosis and in vitro mouse kidney MES 13 cells overexpressing ESM1. We observed that ESM1 overexpression significantly increased the motility and migration of MES 13 cells, independent of cell viability. In ESM1-overexpressing MES 13 cells, we also observed elevated expression of mesenchymal markers (N-cadherin, vimentin, matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9)) and the fibrosis marker α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and decreased expression of the endothelial marker vascular endothelial cadherin (VE-cadherin) and CD31. In a mouse model of fibrosis induced by unilateral ureter obstruction, we observed time-dependent increases in ESM1, α-SMA, and vimentin expression and renal interstitial collagen fibers in kidney tissue samples. These results suggest that ESM1 may serve as an EndoMT marker of renal fibrosis progression.

Abstract
Chronic anemia, transfusion-associated iron deposition, and chelating agents lead to renal impairment in β-thalassemia (β-thal) patients. The present study aimed to determine the most reliable and practical method in assessing and predicting renal injury in β-thal major (β-TM) patients. Therefore, we assessed the predictive values of urine β2-microglobulin (β2-MG) and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) levels, their ratios to urine creatinine, and serum endocan level. Sixty β-TM patients and 30 healthy controls were included. Renal functions of the patients and controls were evaluated by means of urine protein/creatinine ratio, urine β2-MG, urine NGAL, and serum endocan level. The β-TM and control groups were comparable in terms of the demographic characteristics. Of the β-TM patients, 26.7% had glomerular hyperfiltration and 41.7% had proteinuria. Compared with the control group, the β-TM group had significantly higher levels of urine protein/creatinine, urine β2-MG, urine β2-MG/creatinine, urine NGAL, urine NGAL/creatinine, and serum endocan. These parameters did not differ between the chelating agent subgroups in the patient group. Urine β2-MG/creatinine and NGAL/creatinine ratios were the parameters with high specificity in predicting proteinuria. There were significant correlations of urine β2-MG, urine NGAL, and serum endocan levels with serum ferritin concentration. Urine β2-MG/creatinine, NGAL/creatinine, and protein/creatinine ratios were correlated with each other in the patient group. Positive correlations of urine β2-MG, urine NGAL, and serum endocan levels with serum ferritin concentration indicated that iron deposition was associated with endothelial damage and renal injury.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis (ATH) is a chronic, dynamic, evolutive process involving morphological and structural subversion of artery walls, leading to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques. ATH generally initiates during the childhood, occurring as a result of a number of changes in the intima tunica and in the media of arteries. A key event occurring during the pathobiology of ATH is the accumulation of lipoproteins in the sub-intimal spaces mediated by extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules, especially by the chondroitin sulfate/dermatan sulfate (CS/DS) -containing proteoglycans (CS/DSPGs). Among them, the proteoglycan biglycan (BGN) is critically involved in the onset and progression of ATH and evidences show that BGN represents the missing link between the pro-atherogenic status induced by both traditional and non-traditional cardiovascular risk factors and the development and progression of vascular damage. In the light of these findings, the role of BGN in dyslipidemia, hypertension, cigarette smoking, diabetes, chronic kidney disease and inflammatory status is briefly analyzed and discussed in order to shed new light on the underlying mechanisms governing the association between BGN and ATH.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endocan is associated with endothelial dysfunction. In peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, cardiovascular disease is a common cause of mortality. We examined the relationship between serum endocan level and clinical outcome of PD patients. METHODS We recruited 193 new PD patients (118 males, mean age 58.8 ± 11.6 years). Serum endocan levels were determined and stratified into tertile 1 (lowest) to 3 (highest). Nutritional status, arterial pulse wave velocity (PWV) and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were measured. The patients were followed for at least 4 years for clinical outcomes. RESULTS For the whole cohort, patients with higher serum endocan levels had lower serum albumin and subjective global assessment score, higher carotid-femoral PWV, and higher serum CRP. For patients with suboptimal blood pressure (BP) control, cardiovascular event-free survival was 95.0, 95.5, and 78.5% for tertiles 1, 2, and 3 at 60 months respectively (p = 0.019). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that serum endocan level was an independent predictor of cardiovascular event-free survival. No association with cardiovascular event-free survival was found for patients with adequate BP control (95.0, 92.3, and 100% for tertile 1, 2, and 3 at 60 months, respectively, p = 0.6). CONCLUSIONS Higher serum endocan level is associated with unfavourable nutritional, arterial and inflammatory conditions in PD patients. In patients with suboptimal BP control, higher serum endocan is also associated with worse cardiovascular outcome.

Abstract
Background: Endocan is a particular protein of endothelial cells. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of serum endocan levels with carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), inflammation, and microalbuminuria in patients with newly-diagnosed hypertension.Materials-Methods: This prospective study included 61 patients with newly-diagnosed hypertension (HT) and 30 controls. Endocan, microalbuminuria and cIMT measurements were taken from all patients.Results: The serum endocan levels, the mean cIMT and microalbuminuria levels of patients with HT were significantly higher than those of the control group (p < .0001, p = .015 and p < .001, respectively).Conclusion: We found that endocan levels were increased in our study. This increase in endocan levels shows a relation with cIMT and microalbuminuria, which are associated with endothelial dysfunction.

Abstract
Multiple mechanisms may modulate an association between restless legs syndrome/Willis-Ekbom disease (RLS/WED) and cardiovascular disease (CVD), including chronic sleep deprivation, intermittent, periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS)-related autonomic fluctuations and possible autonomic dysfunction intrinsically associated with RLS per se. The purpose of this paper is to review the existing RLS/WED literature focusing on the pathophysiologic evidence for possible associations between RLS/WED and PLMS with CVD and events (CVE). Specific intrinsic dysautonomic aspects of the disease, which may contribute to generating CVD, are separately discussed. The association between RLS/WED and both CV risk factors and CVD still remains elusive. Although several shared pathophysiological causes could explain these possible relationships, the emerging body of literature focusing on these disorders remains controversial. Not only longitudinal population-based studies and meta-analyses, but also more animal models and therapeutic interventions are needed in order to build a sufficiently robust body of evidence on this topic.

Abstract
Background Endocan, also known as endothelial cell specific molecule-1 (ESM1), is a 50 kDa soluble proteoglycan which is frequently overexpressed in many cancer types. Whether it is dysregulated in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) has not been investigated. Methods We analyzed the expression of ESM1 using bioinformatics analysis based on data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), and then validated that ESM1 was significantly overexpressed in human HNSCC at the protein level using immunohistochemistry. We also analyzed the genes co-expressed with ESM1 in HNSCC. Results The most correlated gene was angiopoietin-2 (ANGPT2), a molecule which regulates physiological and pathological angiogenesis. Several transcription factor binding motifs including SMAD3, SMAD4, SOX3, SOX4, HIF2A and AP-1 components were significantly enriched in the promoter regions of the genes co-expressed with ESM1. Further analysis based on ChIP-seq data from the ENCODE (Encyclopedia of DNA Elements) project revealed that AP-1 is an important regulator of ESM1 expression. Conclusions Our results revealed a dysregulation of ESM1 and a potential regulatory mechanism for the co-expression network in HNSCC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: In this study, the clinical relevance of the levels of serum endocan and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] was investigated in patients with acute kidney injury (AKI). Endocan or the endothelial cell-specific molecule 1 is a soluble proteoglycan secreted by vascular endothelial cells. It plays a significant role in immunity, inflammation, and endothelial function. METHODS: A total of 39 patients with AKI (19 females, 20 males) and 38 healthy individuals (18 females, 20 males) were included in the study. The levels of serum endocan, vitamin D, and other biochemical parameters were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: In the AKI group, the values of serum creatinine, endocan, parathormone, phosphorus, and uric acid were found to be higher, and the total protein, albumin, and calcium levels were lower compared to the control group. There was no difference between the two groups in terms of the serum vitamin D, magnesium, alkaline phosphatase, and gamma-glutamyl transferase. CONCLUSION: In patients with AKI, an increased endocan level is a significant marker of inflammation and endothelial injury. In addition, these patients experience vitamin D deficiency.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Endocan plays a role in the development of vascular tissue in health and disease and is an indicator of endothelial cells activation and angiogenesis. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between maternal endocan serum level and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) as well as ultrasound Doppler flow measurements indicating placental insufficiency. METHODS This study included a group of women with IUGR (n = 37) and a group of healthy pregnant women (controls, n = 37). The endocan serum concentrations were assessed using commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. Every woman underwent an ultrasound examination with Doppler flow measurements of the uterine arteries, umbilical vessels, and fetal middle cerebral artery. We used the cerebroplacental ratio (CPR) to determine placental insufficiency. RESULTS We found significant differences in median (interquartile) endocan serum level (pg/mL) between study and control groups (464 [374-532] vs 339 [189-496], respectively; P < .001). The endocan serum level correlated neither with umbilical cord blood gases nor with Apgar score. Ultrasound Doppler findings revealed significant differences in middle cerebral artery pulsatility index (PI), umbilical artery PI, CPR, as well as mean uterine arteries PI between IUGR group and controls. In the study group, we found significant correlations between the serum endocan and CPR ( R = 0.56, P < .001) as well as between serum endocan and mean uterine arteries PI ( R = 0.46, P = .006). CONCLUSION Endocan is likely involved in the pathogenesis of IUGR in pregnant women and possibly is a useful marker of endothelial dysfunction in these cases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Endocan is a novel soluble dermatan sulfate proteoglycan derived from endothelium. It has the capacity of binding to different biologically active molecules associated with cellular signaling, adhesion and regulating proliferation, differentiation, migration, and adhesion of different cell types in health and pathology. Elevated endocan levels are connected with endothelial activation/damage, neo-angiogenesis, and inflammation or carcinogenesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS The level of serum endocan among 63 kidney transplant recipients on three immunosuppressives (calcineurin inhibitors, mycophenolate mofetil, steroids) in correlation with other markers of endothelial damage was estimated. Additionally, 22 healthy volunteers were studied. Using a cross-sectional study design, the markers of endothelial damage like endocan, von Willebrand factor (vWF), intracellular adhesion molecule (ICAM), vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM); markers of inflammation high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and IL-6; and marker of kidney function cystatin C were measured using commercially available assays. RESULTS Endocan, vWF, IL-6, hsCRP, ICAM, and VCAM levels were significantly higher in kidney transplant recipients comparing to healthy volunteers. In kidney transplant recipients, endocan levels correlated with renal function (estimated glomerular filtration rate by Modification of Diet in Renal Disease, r = -0.24, P < .05, creatinine r = 0.26, P < .05), time after transplantation r = -0.24, P < .05, activity of aspartate aminotransferase r = -0.46, P < .001, alanine aminotransferase r = 0.34, P < .01), ICAM r = -0.53, P < .001, VCAM r = -0.34, P < .01, hsCRP r = 0.35, P < .01, IL-6 r = 0.28, P < .05, vWF r = 0.26, P < .05. In a multifactorial analysis, the predictors of endocan levels were creatinine, ICAM, and VCAM predicting 59% of variability. CONCLUSION Endocan concentration among kidney transplant recipients is potentially connected with endothelial damage dependent upon graft function and time after transplantation.

Abstract
Inflammation and endothelial dysfunction may play an important role in the multifactorial pathogenesis of hypertension. Endocan is also thought to play a role in cell adhesion and inflammatory disorders. The aim of the study was to compare endocan concentrations in patients with primary hypertension and healthy volunteers. There were 104 patients with hypertension (study group) and 21 healthy volunteers (control group). The correlation between endocan, catecholamines, and blood pressure control in patients with primary hypertension and the control group was analyzed. The median endocan concentration in the study group (2.03 ng/mL) was significantly higher than in the control group (1.09 ng/mL, P = .0001). Endocan concentration was correlated positively with renalase ( r = .2, P = .047) and norepinephrine ( r = .25, P = .02). Negative correlation was observed between endocan and body mass index ( r = −.25, P = .016) and leukocyte count ( r = −.36, P = .0004). The present study reports higher plasma endocan concentration in patients with treated, well-controlled primary hypertension compared with healthy volunteers. The higher endocan concentration in the study group may reflect endothelial dysfunction in this population.

Abstract
Endocan is an important biomarker of inflammation and endothelial dysfunction that increases in association with several chronic diseases. Few published data have described the role of endocan in pediatric renal transplant (RT) patients. We evaluated the endocan concentrations in 62 children who underwent renal transplantation and assessed their relationships with the patients' blood pressure and loss of renal function. The endocan levels were significantly elevated in the pediatric RT patients who had hypertension and a loss of renal function. We determined positive correlations between the endocan concentrations and the hemodynamic variables (systolic blood pressure: r = 0.416; P = 0.001; pulse pressure: r = 0.412; P = 0.003). The endocan levels were inversely correlated with the estimated glomerular filtration rate (r = −0.388; P = 0.003). An endocan cutoff concentration of 7.0 ng/mL identified pediatric RT patients who had hypertension and a loss of renal function with 100% sensitivity and 75% specificity. In conclusion, the endocan concentrations were significantly elevated in pediatric RT patients who had both hypertension and a loss of renal function. The correlations between the endocan levels and the hemodynamic variables and the markers of renal function strengthen the hypothesis that it is an important marker of cardiorenal risk.

METHODS The level of serum endocan among 131 heart transplant recipients on 3-drug immunosuppression (calcineurin inhibitor, mycophenolate mofetil/mycophenolic acid, steroid) in correlation with other markers of endothelial damage was determined. In addition, 22 healthy volunteers were studied. In cross-sectional study, markers were measured with the use of commercially available assays of endothelial damage-endocan and von Willebrand factor (VWF)-inflammation-high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), interleukin (IL) 6-and kidney function-cystatin C. RESULTS The endocan, VWF, IL-6, hsCRP, and cystatin C levels were significantly higher in heart transplant recipients compared with healthy volunteers. In our cohort, endocan level was correlated with renal function (estimated glomerular filtration rate: r = -0.21; P < .05), creatinine (r = 0.21; P < .05), erythrocyte count (r = -0.24; P < .01), hemoglobin (r = -0.33; P < .01), N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (r = 0.25; P < .01), cholesterol (r = -0.22; P < .05), LDL (r = -0.21; P < .05), New York Heart Association functional class (r = 0.21; P < .05), hsCRP (r = 0.32; P < .01), IL-6 (r = 0.31; P < .01), and VWF (r = 0.27; P < .01). In multifactorial analysis, the predictors of endocan levels were cholesterol level, cystatin C, and IL-6, predicting 54% of variability. CONCLUSIONS Endocan concentration among heart transplant recipients is potentially connected with endothelial damage caused by subclinical inflammation resulting from hyperlipidemia.

Abstract
Endothelial-specific molecule 1 (endocan) is expressed by endothelial cells and may have a major role in the regulation of cell adhesion and in the pathogenesis of inflammatory disorders. We aimed to assess change in endocan levels after 3 months of lifestyle change recommendations and guideline-based treatment. Diabetic patients (n = 77) who had neither chronic kidney disease nor chronic inflammatory disease were included. After baseline evaluation, the patients were advised lifestyle changes, and their medical treatment was determined individually according to recommendations of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) guidelines. At the end of third month patients were reevaluated. Baseline endocan levels were significantly increased in the study group compared with the control group. The third-month laboratory workup showed significant reductions in hemoglobin A1c, urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR), and endocan levels. Only δ-UACR was independently correlated with δ-endocan in multivariate linear regression analysis. Our findings suggest that serum endocan concentrations are elevated in patients with type 2 diabetes and decrease following anti-hyperglycemic treatment. Furthermore, decrease in endocan concentrations might be associated with improved glycemic control and reductions in UACR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endocan is a recently introduced marker of endothelial dysfunction. The objective of this study was to compare serum endocan levels in patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS) and control subjects in order to elucidate whether RLS is associated with endothelial dysfunction. METHODS A total of 31 drug naïve female patients with RLS and 31 age- and BMI-matched women were included in the study. Patients with pathological or physiological conditions or with a history of medication use that could potentially influence endothelial functions were excluded, as well as those with alcohol or drug abuse history. The two groups were compared with routine blood tests and serum endocan levels. RESULTS Patients with RLS had lower serum endocan levels than the controls (P=0.037). There was a negative bivariate correlation between RLS severity score and serum endocan levels (r=-0.406, P=0.023). While white blood cell count was significantly higher in RLS group, 25-hydroxy vitamin D3, vitamin B12, transferrin saturation rate, and HDL-cholesterol were significantly lower. Creatininemia and diastolic blood pressure were also marginally insignificantly lower in RLS group. Due to the presence of differences between two groups in these variables, a linear regression analysis was performed that showed a positive association between endocan and creatininemia (β=0.310, P=0.022), and a negative association between endocan and RLS (β=-0.502, P<0.001). CONCLUSION The results of this study seem to suggest that patients with RLS may have better endothelial functions when compared with the general population and that these patients may be better protected against atherosclerosis.
