Abstract
The European anchovy represents the main fisheries for countries in the Mediterranean and Black Sea basins. The skeletal muscle of 13 of 48 (27.1%) Engraulis encrasicolus (L.) specimens from North East Atlantic waters (FAO 27.8.c) was found infected with interfibrillar elongated plasmodia (130-980 µm in length) containing mature myxospores belonging to the genus Kudoa Meglitsch, 1947. No flesh softening was found associated with infection. Fresh myxospores were 10.8 ± 0.7 (9.1-12.3) µm in width 1, 11.3 ± 0.9 (9.5-13.4) µm in width 2, 6.7 ± 0.4 (5.8-7.4) µm in thickness, and 6.9 ± 0.5 (5.8-7.5) µm in length. They were almost stellate in apical view having three pointed-edged shell valves bearing three small polar capsules equal in size 5.0 ± 0.3 (4.4-5.4) μm long and 2.4 ± 0.2 (2.0-3.0) μm wide, and one rounded- to rarely bluntly pointed-edged shell valve bearing a large and particularly wide polar capsule 6.8 ± 0.4 (5.9-7.6) μm long and 4.1 ± 0.2 (3.6-4.4) μm wide. Morphological and morphometrical comparisons between these myxospores and those of Kudoa thyrsites (Gilchrist, 1923) from the clupeid Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum) (North East Atlantic waters, FAO 27.9.a), with which exhibited a similarity of 98.9% and 96.2% using SSU and LSU rDNA sequences, respectively, support the creation of Kudoa encrasicolin. sp. Morphometrical analysis of the polar capsules of flattened myxospores is suggested as a useful approach to differentiate phylogenetically related kudoids with stellate or almost stellate myxospores bearing four polar capsules.

Abstract
PURPOSE Members of the genus Kudoa Meglitsch, 1947 are known to infect the muscles of commercially important fishes worldwide, including those in the order Siluriformes. This paper describes the occurrence of a new species of Kudoa in the catfish Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii based on morphological study and molecular analysis of the ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rDNA). METHODS Fifteen specimens of Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii were purchased from fishing zones near Mosqueiro Island, Belém, Pará, Brazil. After necropsy, tissue samples and cysts were analyzed using a stereomicroscope, and fresh slides were viewed under a light microscope to confirm parasitic infection. The tissue fragments were removed and processed for molecular and histological analyses. RESULTS Microscopic pseudocysts were found in the epaxial region of skeletal muscle fibers in 80% of the analyzed specimens. The myxospores were quadrangular with four shell valves (SV), pyriform polar capsules (PC), and internal symmetry. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that the new species formed a cluster with the species previously described in the Amazon, being close to two freshwater species. CONCLUSIONS Morphological differences and molecular data of SSU rDNA support that Kudoa rousseauxii n. sp. is a new species that infects B. rousseauxii, a freshwater fish with intense migratory cycles that is widely captured and consumed in the Amazon.

Abstract
Sphaeromyxa azevedoi n. sp. is described from the gall bladder of the goby Gobioides grahamae (Gobiidae) captured on the Paracauari River in Salvaterra, on Marajó Island, northern Brazil. A total of 50 G. grahamae specimens were analysed, and 15 (30%) were parasitised by the plasmodia and myxospore of Sphaeromyxa azevedoi n. sp. Large plasmodia were observed floating in the bile. These plasmodia were flat, rounded, oval or elongated, and of varying sizes. The mature myxospores, found singly or in pairs, were 27.1 ± 2.7 (20.5-30.1) μm Length and 3.8 ± 0.2 (3.5-4.4) μm Width in the valvular view. The myxospore has two polar capsules of equal size, 8.1 ± 0.6 (7.4-9.4) μm in length and 2.9 ± 0.2 (2.3-3.3) μm in width. A polar tubule was observed in each capsule, arranged perpendicularly to the principal axis, with three or four coils. The histological analysis showed that the plasmodia and myxospore are located in the lumen of the gall bladder, arranged in pairs, and the epithelium of the gall bladder presented multifocal necrosis. The SSU rDNA of Sphaeromyxa azevedoi n. sp. clusters in the 'balbianii' group of the Sphaeromyxa clade. The morphological characteristics and molecular phylogeny of Sphaeromyxa azevedoi n. sp. support its classification as a new species of the genus Sphaeromyxa, which represents an important advancement in the understanding of the diversity of the myxozoan parasite fauna of Brazilian fishes, especially considering that the new species may be detrimental to the host, a commercially important Brazilian fish species.

Abstract
Kudoa ocellatus n. sp. was found in the musculature of Astronotus ocelattus (Agassiz, 1831) from the Arari River on Marajó Island in Pará, Brazil. The new species forms pseudocysts in the epaxial and hypaxial musculature composed of various spores that are pseudoquadrate in the apical view. In the lateral view, the spores were triangular or pyramidal. In the lateral view, the spores were 46 ± 0.11 μm (4.5-4.8) in length and 6.6 ± 0.3 μm (6.2-7.2) in width, with four pyriform polar capsules of equal size that measured 2.0 ± 0.16 μm (1.8-2.2) in length and 1.5 ± 0.18 μm (1.3-1.8) in width. Based on the partial (1418 bps) sequence of the SSU rDNA gene, Kudoa ocellatus n. sp. was distinct from all the other Kudoa species deposited in GenBank. The phylogenetic Bayesian Inference and P distance placed the new species together with the other Kudoa species that parasitize freshwater Amazonian fish. The morphological evidence, together with the SSU rDNA gene sequence, supported the description of Kudoa ocellatus n. sp., a distinct new species of the genus, which parasitizes a freshwater Amazonian cichlid.

Abstract
A new parasite species, Kudoa yasai n. sp. (Multivalvulida), is described from the king weakfish (Macrodon ancylodon), which is an important commercial fishery resource on the Brazilian Amazon coast. A total of 190 M. ancylodon specimens were obtained from the central fish market of the town of Bragança, and pseudocysts were found in the skeletal muscle fiber samples of all (100%) of the specimens, although no inflammatory reaction was observed in any of the cases. The myxospores are quadrate in shape with four polar capsules of equal size, 6.9 ± 0.94 μm long, 8.2 ± 0.39 μm wide, and 5.5 ± 0.60 μm thick. The polar capsules are 1.8 ± 0.26 μm in length and 1.4 ± 0.18 μm in width. The morphological and morphometric parameters, together with the phylogenetic analysis of a partial sequence of the 18S (SSU rDNA) gene, all indicate conclusively that Kudoa yasai n. sp. is a new species, distinct from all other Kudoa species. The study also verified the loss of quality in the meat of the host fish (M. ancylodon) sold in the Bragança market, which reinforces the need for the more systematic control of the quality of the product and the prevention of possible health problems for the consumer.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to describe the first occurrence ofKudoasp. inGobioides grahamae, contributing to the understanding of this group of parasites in the Amazonian ichthyofauna. Forty specimens ofG. grahamaecollected from the natural environment were analyzed. Cysts ofKudoasp. were diffusely distributed through the striated skeletal muscle fibers with severe edema and inflammatory infiltrate composed of lymphocytes were observed in 30% of the specimens. Edema and marked coagulation necrosis of the muscle fibers was associated with infection byKudoasp. spores, which had accumulated inside the skeletal muscle fibers. Although there are no records of foodborne outbreaks caused by Kudoa spp. in Brazil, it is of paramount importance that we evaluate its occurrence, since the consumption of fish, especially raw fish, has increased because of the adoption of Japanese cuisine. To minimize the economic impacts on the fisheries market and the risk of this parasite to public health, it is necessary to initiate a program to monitor the presence of this likely underdiagnosed, emerging parasite.

Abstract
The aim of this was describe an infection by Kudoa orbicularis in freshwater catfish Trachelyopterus galeatus. A sample of 80 specimens of T. galeatus was collected in the municipality of Cachoeira do Arari, Marajó Island, in the state of Pará, Brazil. Pseudocysts were found in the muscle fibers of the epaxial and hypaxial regions of 85.0% of the specimens analyzed, reflecting a high infection rate. The pseudocysts contained spores that were pseudo-square in shape, with a mean length of 4.65 µm (range: 4.04-5.54) and mean width of 1.53 µm (1.56-1.74). Analyses on the morphology of the spores and a partial 934-bp sequence of the SSU rDNA gene confirmed that the microparasite was Kudoa orbicularis. This is the second record of this microparasite in a siluriform host in the Brazilian Amazon region.

Abstract
Henneguya quelen n. sp. (Myxosporea) is described from the kidney of the silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824), from Marajó Island. In all, 40% of the 57 silver catfish collected from the Paracauari River in the municipality of Salvaterra presented cysts in the kidney. The cysts were whitish, spherical, and 0.45 mm in diameter. The histological analyses revealed tubular renal compression and cellular degeneration in the area adjacent to the xenomas. The spores are ellipsoid, with well-marked valves, caudal projection, and two elongated polar capsules of equal size. The mature spores measure approximately 15.6 μm in length, with the caudal appendage split posteriorly; 24.3 μm in length, for a total spore length of 40.0 μm; and a width of 4.1 μm. The polar capsules are pyriform, 5.5 μm long and 1.7 μm wide. A phylogenetic analysis based on Bayesian inference confirmed that the specimens represented a new species, which was denominated Henneguya quelen n. sp.

Abstract
This study describes infection of intestinal smooth muscle in fringelip mullets Crenimugil crenilabis with Kudoa crenimugilis n. sp. Of 30 individuals sampled from the Red Sea off Saudi Arabia, 6 (20%) were infected. Ovoid plasmodia (279-412 × 157-295 µm) in the smooth muscle of the intestine were packed with only mature myxospores with 4 valves. Specifically, light and transmission electron microscopy revealed quadrate myxospores with 4 equal, rounded, spore valves uniting at thin delicate suture lines. The mature myxospores were 8 (7-9) µm long, 5.2 (5-6) µm thick and 7.8 (7-8) µm wide. The 4 polar capsules were equal-sized, elliptical to ovoid, and measured 5 (4-5) µm long and 2 (1.5-3) µm wide, possessing 2 filament coils. The sporoplasm was uninucleated and composed of a primary cell enveloping a secondary cell. The parasite had a significant histopathological impact since the developing plasmodia replaced normal muscle tissue and was associated with the myolysis of local muscle fibres and the inflammatory infiltration of lymphocytes and macrophages. The partial sequences of the 18S and 28S rDNA showed that K. crenimugilis n. sp. has the highest level of nucleotide similarity with K. ciliatae (98.46 and 94.11%, respectively) and K. cookii (97.51 and 92.11%, respectively), both of which have previously been reported from the intestines of their host fish. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that K. crenimugilis consistently clustered with these other 2 intestinal Kudoa species in a well-supported subclade, confirming the evaluative association between Kudoa species infecting the same organs.

Abstract
ABSTRACT This study describes aspects of infections caused by the myxosporidian Kudoa orbicularis in filter-feeding cichlids, Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis, caught in the Arari River in the municipality of Cachoeira do Arari, on Marajó Island, Pará, Brazil. The parasite forms pseudocysts scattered throughout the striated epaxial and hypaxial muscles. Samples embedded in paraffin were analyzed histologically using hematoxylin-eosin, Gömöri, Ziehl-Neelsen, and Giemsa staining. Necropsy of the C. orbicularis specimens revealed that 100% (50/50) were infected with K. orbicularis. The specimens presented grossly abnormal muscle texture, resulting in extensive inconsistencies and weakness. Progressive softening of the muscles was observed during necropsy, indicating the rapid enzymatic autolysis of the tissue. The parasite found in the muscle tissue of C. orbicularis was identified as K. orbicularis, with clinical signs of disease being observed in the fish. The necropsy revealed extensive damage to the host organism, with well-established fibrocystic infections in the muscle fibers, associated with post mortem myoliquefaction.

Abstract
Abstract This study reports on Kudoa spp. (Myxozoa, Multivalvulida) from the fish species Lutjanus analis, Bagre marinus, Aspistor luniscutis and Lutjanus jocu, which were caught in Aracaju, state of Sergipe, Brazil. The parasites formed oval plasmodia around the esophagus of L. analis, and elongated plasmodia inside the skeletal muscle of B. marinus, A. luniscutis and L. jocu. Host myoliquefaction was not observed in all the cases studied. The current study provides a morphological and morphometric description of each parasite as well as a comparison with all the species described worldwide. Lack of molecular data impaired specific identification of the parasites. The importance of these parasites is discussed and the need for further studies on infections in Brazilian fish is emphasized because of the high economic impact of some Kudoa species which cause liquefaction in hosts’ muscles and render these fish unsuitable for consumption.
