Abstract
Sleep paralysis (SP) is a REM-related parasomnia, characterized by the inability to perform voluntary movements. It is a relatively widespread phenomenon in the general population and, although usually not dangerous, it is experienced with intense fear. The current study aims to evaluate the lifetime prevalence and characteristics of SP in the Italian student population. The study was conducted online, through an online battery of questionnaires. We used the Unusual Sleep Experience Questionnaire to investigate the prevalence of the disorder and the typical characteristics, metacognitive beliefs on the episodes, and previous distress factors. We also collected information about anxiety and depression symptomatology, sleep quality, and circadian preferences. Four hundred and thirty-two participants (333 F, 22.8 ± 2.57 y) took part in the study and 37.5 % of them reported having experienced at least one SP episode in their lifetime. On a physiological level, the most common features were the inability to speak followed by a tingling sensation and the inability to open the eyes, consistent with REM muscle atonia. Cognitive features during episodes include the perception of a presence in the room, followed by the fear of dying. Participants who reported SP had higher anxiety and worse sleep quality, and were more associated with evening chronotypes compared to non-SP responders. Our results show that SP is generally widespread in Italian students, in line with the prevalence reported in previous studies. Further studies could investigate the effects of suggested therapies to decrease the number of episodes of the disorder, especially in those who experience it recurrently.

Abstract
This investigation centered on the hypnagogic and hypnopompic wake-sleep/sleep-wake transition states and the associated exploration of hypnagogic and hypnopompic experiences (HHEs), and sleep paralysis (SP) on psychiatric exacerbation and paradoxical masking. The study aims to discern causality by examining how these sleep-related experiences may contribute to the emergence or exacerbation of psychiatric and neurodegenerative conditions, particularly, pertaining to the clinical or sub-clinical demographic of Schizotypal Personality Disorder (STPD), Mood Disorders, Schizophrenia, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Narcolepsy, Panic Disorder, specific phobias, or heightened psychotic sensitivity. Methodologically, this study employed a comprehensive literature review, drawing from a range of studies across sleep medicine, psychiatry, and psychology, utilizing PubMed-indexed peer-reviewed scientific literature, sourcing from academic institutions, Google Scholar, and open-access publications. This interdisciplinary approach allowed for a nuanced and systematic understanding of the potential links between specific sleep-wake/wake-sleep aberrations and their masking or exacerbation of clinical/sub-clinical psychiatric symptomatology in this particular demographic. Insights gained from the outcome of this study hold promise for advancing understanding of the interrelationship between sleep neurobiology and psychiatric disorders. Additionally, the findings may inform targeted therapeutic interventions tailored to mitigate the impact of sleep-wake disruptions on vulnerable populations. The overarching objective is to bridge current gaps in knowledge, cultivating a more profound understanding with direct implications for both clinical practice and ongoing research endeavors. The study outcomes provide an intriguing understanding of the complex relationship between sleep neurobiology and psychiatric disorders, paving the way for targeted therapeutic interventions to alleviate the effects of sleep-wake disruptions, and addressing critical gaps in knowledge with direct implications for clinical practice and ongoing research.

Abstract
The boundaries between waking and sleeping-when falling asleep (hypnagogic) or waking up (hypnopompic)-can be challenging for our ability to monitor and interpret reality. Without proper understanding, bizarre but relatively normal hypnagogic/hypnopompic experiences can be misinterpreted as psychotic hallucinations (occurring, by definition, in the fully awake state), potentially leading to stigma and misdiagnosis in clinical contexts and to misconception and bias in research contexts. This Perspective proposes that conceptual and practical understanding for differentiating hallucinations from hypnagogic/hypnopompic experiences may be offered by lucid dreaming, the state in which one is aware of dreaming while sleeping. I first introduce a possible systematization of the phenomenological range of hypnagogic/hypnopompic experiences that can occur in the transition from awake to REM dreaming (including hypnagogic perceptions, transition symptoms, sleep paralysis, false awakenings, and out-of-body experiences). I then outline how metacognitive strategies used by lucid dreamers to gain/confirm oneiric lucidity could be tested for better differentiating hypnagogic/hypnopompic experiences from hallucinations. The relevance of hypnagogic/hypnopompic experiences and lucid dreaming is analyzed for schizophrenia and narcolepsy, and discussed for neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Lewy-body disorders (i.e. Parkinson's disease, Parkinson's disease dementia, and dementia with Lewy bodies), offering testable hypotheses for empirical investigation. Finally, emotionally positive lucid dreams triggered or enhanced by training/induction strategies or by a pathological process may have intrinsic therapeutic value if properly recognized and guided. The overall intention is to raise awareness and foster further research about the possible diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic implications of hypnagogic/hypnopompic experiences and lucid dreaming for brain disorders.

Abstract
Dreaming is a complex phenomenon that occurs during sleep, involving various conscious dream experiences. Lucid dreams (LDs) involve heightened awareness within the dream environment, while out-of-body experiences (OBEs) involve the sensation of being outside one's physical body. OBEs occur during sleep paralysis (SP), where voluntary movements are inhibited during sleep/wake transitions while remaining aware of the surroundings. The relationship between LDs and OBEs is debated, with some viewing them as distinct phenomena and others considering them different manifestations of the same underlying experience. This study aimed to characterize non-lucid dreams, LDs, and OBEs by analyzing dream reports' structural properties. OBE reports displayed a condensed and interconnected network structure compared to non-lucid dreams and LDs. Additionally, OBE reports exhibited a specialized network structure, with specific nodes playing a more central role. These findings suggest that OBE dreams may have a more coherent and unified narrative, with certain nodes being pivotal in the network structure.

Abstract
The interaction between sleep and epilepsy is complex. A better understanding of the mechanisms linking sleep and epilepsy appears increasingly important as it may improve diagnosis and therapeutic strategies in patients with epilepsy. In this narrative review, we aim to (i) provide an overview of the physiological and pathophysiological processes linking sleep and epilepsy; (ii) present common sleep disorders in patients with epilepsy; (iii) discuss how sleep and sleep disorders should be considered in new therapeutic approaches to epilepsy such as neurostimulation; and (iv) present the overall nocturnal manifestations and differential diagnosis between epileptic seizures and parasomnia.

Abstract
Out-of-body experiences (OBEs) are subjective experiences of seeing one's own body and the environment from a location outside the physical body. They can arise spontaneously or in specific conditions, such as during the intake of dissociative drug. Given its unpredictable occurrence, one way to empirically study it is to induce subjective experiences resembling an OBE using technology such as virtual reality. We employed a complex multisensory method of virtual embodiment in a virtual reality scenario with seven healthy participants to induce virtual OBE-like experiences. Participants performed two conditions in a randomly determined order. For both conditions, the participant's viewpoint was lifted out of the virtual body toward the ceiling of the virtual room, and real body movements were (visuo-tactile ON condition) or were not (visuo-tactile OFF condition) translated into movements on the virtual body below-the latter aiming to maintain a feeling of connection with the virtual body. A continuous 128-electrode EEG was recorded. Participants reported subjective experiences of floating in the air and of feeling high up in the virtual room at a strong intensity, but a weak to moderate feeling of being "out of their body" in both conditions. The EEG analysis revealed that this subjective experience was associated with a power shift that manifested in an increase of delta and a decrease of alpha relative power. A reduction of theta complexity and an increase of beta-2 connectivity were also found. This supports the growing body of evidence revealing a prominent role of delta activity during particular conscious states.
