Appropriate leadership in nursing home care: a narrative review

PURPOSE

The purpose of this paper is to synthesize the existing evidence on leadership that best matches nursing home care, with a focus on behaviors, effects and influencing factors.

DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH

A narrative review was performed in three steps: the establishment of scope, systematic search in five databases and assessment and analysis of the literature identified.

FINDINGS

A total of 44 articles were included in the review. The results of the study imply that a stronger focus on leadership behaviors related to the specific context rather than leadership styles could be of added value in nursing home care.

RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS

Only articles applicable to nursing home care were included. The definition of "nursing home care" may differ between countries. This study only focused on the academic literature. Future research should focus on strategies and methods for the translation of leadership into behavior in practice.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS

A broader and more conceptual perspective on leadership in nursing homes - in which leadership is seen as an attribute of all employees and enacted in multiple layers of the organization - could support leadership practice.

ORIGINALITY/VALUE

Leadership is considered an important element in the delivery of good quality nursing home care. This study provides insight into leadership behaviors and influencing contextual factors specifically in nursing homes.

Staff Nurses' Perceptions of Nurse Manager Caring Behaviors: A Scoping Study

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this scoping study is to review the published evidence regarding staff nurses' perceptions of nurse manager caring behaviors.

BACKGROUND

As healthcare administration becomes more complex and financial challenges continue, the ability of nurse managers to lead patient care environments that produce desirable outcomes becomes critical. Demonstrating caring behaviors that build relationships with individuals and groups is a necessary competency of nursing administrators to advance healthcare.

METHODS

This scoping study was guided by Arksey and O'Malley's methodology to review existing literature.

RESULTS

Published literature provided knowledge of staff nurses' perceptions of nurse manager caring behaviors. The final sample was 13 publications. The results were summarized in both numeric and thematic analysis.

CONCLUSIONS

Further research is needed to explore the relationship between nurse manager caring behaviors and patient outcomes.

Appreciative management assessed by physiotherapists working in public or private sector: A cross-sectional study

PURPOSE

To describe how appreciative management occurs in the working environment of physiotherapists.

METHODS

Cross-sectional survey. The data was collected with an electronic questionnaire. The survey instrument was Appreciative Management Scale. The participants were 474 physiotherapists working in clinical or managerial positions from public or private sector.

RESULTS

Appreciative management was realized on an average level within physiotherapy. The highest scoring dimension was Equality and the weakest was Systematic Management. Appreciative management and all of its four categories were associated with the management education received by the manager, the respondent's position, and his or her current duties. The dimension of Appreciation of Know-how and its subdimensions of Guidance and Autonomy were recognized more often when the manager's basic training was in physiotherapy rather than another field.

CONCLUSIONS

It is important that managers in physiotherapy recognize the characteristics of appreciative management, so they can include them as part of their good practice and as part of their own leadership style. Managers in physiotherapy need to be encouraged to participate in management education and also enable the participation of others. A background in physiotherapy can be seen to further the practice and development of physiotherapy. Offering physiotherapists challenging assignments and enabling their career development in physical therapy units is therefore of great importance.
