Clinical Estimation of the Use of the Hip and Knee Extensors During Athletic Movements Using 2D Video

Given that increased use of the knee extensors relative to the hip extensors may contribute to various knee injuries, there is a need for a practical method to characterize movement behavior indicative of how individuals utilize the hip and knee extensors during dynamic tasks. The purpose of the current study was to determine whether the difference between sagittal plane trunk and tibia orientations obtained from 2D video (2D trunk-tibia) could be used to predict the average hip/knee extensor moment ratio during athletic movements. Thirty-nine healthy athletes (15 males and 24 females) performed 6 tasks (step down, drop jump, lateral shuffle, deceleration, triple hop, and side-step-cut). Lower-extremity kinetics (3D) and sagittal plane video (2D) were collected simultaneously. Linear regression analysis was performed to determine if the 2D trunk-tibia angle at peak knee flexion predicted the average hip/knee extensor moment ratio during the deceleration phase of each task. For each task, an increase in the 2D trunk-tibia angle predicted an increase in the average hip/knee extensor moment ratio when adjusted for body mass (all P < .013, R2 = .17-.77). The 2D trunk-tibia angle represents a practical method to characterize movement behavior that is indicative of how individuals utilize the hip and knee extensors during dynamic tasks.

Plantar Pressure Distribution in Female Olympic-Style Weightlifters

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate differences in static and dynamic plantar pressure and other foot geometry variables between female Olympic-style weightlifters and an age- and sex-matched control group. Methods: The study involved 24 national-level competitive weightlifters and 24 physical education students. Leg dominance was determined and baropodometry was used to assess plantar pressure and foot posture during quiet standing and walking. For all variables basic descriptive statistics were calculated (mean ± standard deviation). Student’s t test was used to compare the between-group differences. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients were calculated to determine the association between BMI (Body Mass Index) and average and peak plantar pressure. Results: No significant differences were observed in plantar pressure distribution between the two groups. A moderate correlation was found between BMI and non-dominant limb peak and average plantar pressure in the group of weightlifters in the static condition and in the control group in the dynamic condition. Conclusions: Olympic-style weightlifting may affect plantar pressure distribution and foot posture in female weightlifters. BMI may also correlate with peak and average plantar pressure in this population. Further research is needed to determine if Olympic-style weightlifting may affect plantar pressure distribution and foot posture in female weightlifters.

THE “SUPINE BRIDGE” THERAPEUTIC EXERCISE: DETERMINATION OF JOINT TORQUES BY MEANS OF BIOMECHANICAL MODELING AND TECHNOLOGIES

We developed a quantitative biomechanical analysis of the supine bridge exercise by combining biomechanical modeling with kinematic and kinetic measurements recorded with an optoelectronic motion capture system and a grid of force platforms embedded in the ground. The relevant joint angles and joint torques were determined accounting for three exercise variants: the distance L of the feet from upper back, the degree of pelvic elevation, and the change in shear ground reaction force intentionally induced by voluntary isometric knee-flexion/extension efforts. Contrary to the ankle and hip, the knee angle displays a nonmonotonic dependence on pelvic elevation. A voluntary isometric knee-flexion (knee-extension) effort enhances (reduces) the hip extensor torque when the hips are above the level of the ground. Progressive pelvic elevation and decrease in L gradually change the knee flexor torque into a knee extensor torque, while reducing the hip extensor torque, to reach a limit configuration where a knee extensor torque sustains the bridge position with a negligible contribution of the hip extensors. Moreover, in this configuration, a hip flexor torque is needed to counteract the hip extension thrust induced by a voluntary quadriceps effort across the closed kinetic chain constituted by the lower limbs and trunk.

Kinematic and Electromyographic Activity Changes during Back Squat with Submaximal and Maximal Loading

The aim of this study was to investigate the possible kinematic and muscular activity changes with maximal loading during squat maneuver. Fourteen healthy male individuals, who were experienced at performing squats, participated in this study. Each subject performed squats with 80%, 90%, and 100% of the previously established 1 repetition maximum (1RM). Electromyographic (EMG) activities were measured for the vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, rectus femoris, semitendinosus, biceps femoris, gluteus maximus, and erector spinae by using an 8-channel dual-mode portable EMG and physiological signal data acquisition system (Myomonitor IV, Delsys Inc., Boston, MA, USA). Kinematical data were analyzed by using saSuite 2D kinematical analysis program. Data were analyzed with repeated measures analysis of variance (p < 0.05). Overall muscle activities increased with increasing loads, but significant increases were seen only for vastus medialis and gluteus maximus during 90% and 100% of 1RM compared to 80% while there was no significant difference between 90% and 100% for any muscle. The movement pattern in the hip joint changed with an increase in forward lean during maximal loading. Results may suggest that maximal loading during squat may not be necessary for focusing on knee extensor improvement and may increase the lumbar injury risk.
