Designing hierarchical nanoporous membranes for highly efficient gas adsorption and storage

A robust amphiphilic ionic covalent organic framework intercalated into functionalized graphene oxide hybrid membranes for ultrafast extraction uranium from wastewater

The efficient capture of uranium from wastewater is crucial for environmental remediation and the sustainable development of nuclear energy, yet it poses considerable challenges. In this study, amphiphilic ionic covalent organic framework intercalated into graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets functionalized with polyethyleneimine (PEI) were used to construct hybrid membranes with ultrafast uranium adsorption. These hybrid membranes achieved equilibrium in just 10 min and the adsorption capacity was as high as 358.8 mg g-1 at pH = 6. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) analyses revealed that the strong interaction between sulfonic acid groups and uranyl ions was the primary reason for the high adsorption capacity and selectivity. The extended transition state and natural orbitals for chemical valence (ETS-NOCV) analysis revealed that the interaction between the 7 s and 5f orbitals of uranyl and the 2p orbitals of S and O in the sulfonate was the primary reason for the strong interaction between the sulfonate and the uranyl ion. This research presents an effective method for the rapid extraction of uranium from wastewater.

Preparation of highly elastic superhydrophobic CNF/Fe3O4 based materials modified in aqueous phase for oil-water separation

Magnetic superhydrophobic materials have broad application prospect in oil-water separation. In this study, a magnetic and superhydrophobic aerogel with lamellar structure was successfully prepared using cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) as the skeleton, Fe3O4 as the magnetic ion, 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H trialkylfluorooctane triethoxysilane (FS) and 3-(2-aminoethyl amino)-propyl trimethoxysilane (AS) as the combined modifier. The prepared aerogel shows lower density (38.63 mg/cm3), excellent magnetic (15.13 emu/g), high elasticity and good oil sorption properties (21 g/g). In addition, FS/AS also exhibits excellent mechanical properties and superhydrophobic ability (water contact angle (WCA) of 151.9 ± 1.4°), as it provides sufficient toughness and low surface energy for the layer-branch structure. It should be noted that the entire preparation process is carried out in the aqueous phase, without the use of any organic solvents, providing a green oil-water separation strategy.

Graphene-Oxide-Modified Metal-Organic Frameworks Embedded in Mixed-Matrix Membranes for Highly Efficient CO2/N2 Separation

MOF-74 (metal-organic framework) is utilized as a filler in mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) to improve gas selectivity due to its unique one-dimensional hexagonal channels and high-density open metal sites (OMSs), which exhibit a strong affinity for CO2 molecules. Reducing the agglomeration of nanoparticles and improving the compatibility with the matrix can effectively avoid the existence of non-selective voids to improve the gas separation efficiency. We propose a novel, layer-by-layer modification strategy for MOF-74 with graphene oxide. Two-dimensional graphene oxide nanosheets as a supporting skeleton creatively improve the dispersion uniformity of MOFs in MMMs, enhance their interfacial compatibility, and thus optimize the selective gas permeability. Additionally, they extended the gas diffusion paths, thereby augmenting the dissolution selectivity. Compared with doping with a single component, the use of a GO skeleton to disperse MOF-74 into Pebax®1657 (Polyether Block Amide) achieved a significant improvement in terms of the gas separation effect. The CO2/N2 selectivity of Pebax®1657-MOF-74 (Ni)@GO membrane with a filler concentration of 10 wt% was 76.96, 197.2% higher than the pristine commercial membrane Pebax®1657. Our results highlight an effective way to improve the selective gas separation performance of MMMs by functionalizing the MOF supported by layered GO. As an efficient strategy for developing porous MOF-based gas separation membranes, this method holds particular promise for manufacturing advanced carbon dioxide separation membranes and also concentrates on improving CO2 capture with new membrane technologies, a key step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through carbon capture and storage.

Fabrication of Multifunctional Cotton Fabrics with Antibacterial, Hydrophobic, and Dyeing Performance

Cotton fibers have received considerable attention owing to their functional properties. Current research endeavors have shifted toward devising straightforward and versatile approaches for modifying cotton fibers. Herein, a simple and feasible method was proposed for preparing multifunctional cotton fibers. This method entailed subjecting cotton fibers to alkaline conditions, prompting the epoxy group in epoxidized soybean oil to engage in a ring-opening reaction with the hydroxyl group in cotton fibers and the amino group in polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride. Epoxidized soybean oil acted as a bridge, forming a covalent bond between polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride and cotton fibers, thereby facilitating the cationization of cotton fibers. Structural changes in the modified cotton fibers were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The modified cotton fibers were also evaluated for their dyeing, antibacterial, and hydrophobic properties. The results demonstrated that the dye exhaustion and total dye utilization of modified cotton in salt-free dyeing were much higher than those of raw cotton in conventional dyeing. The water contact angle of the modified cotton fiber reached 139.5°, and their antibacterial properties were partially improved. Importantly, this chemical modification was performed under mild conditions, highlighting its simplicity and environmentally friendly nature.

Tuning the Hierarchical Pore Structure and the Metal Site in a Metal-Organic Framework Derivative to Unravel the Mechanism for the Adsorption of Different Volatile Organic Compounds

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are one of the main classes of air pollutants, and it is important to develop efficient adsorbents to remove them from the atmosphere. To do this most efficiently, we need to understand the mechanism of VOC adsorption. In this work, we described how the metal organic framework (MOF), ZIF-8, was used as a precursor to generate MOF derivatives (Zn-GC) through temperature-controlled calcination, which had adjustable metal sites and hierarchical pore structure. It was used as a model adsorbent to study the adsorption and desorption characteristics of different VOCs. Zn-GC-850 with developed pores exhibited higher adsorption performance for the benzene series, whereas Zn-GC-650 with more metal sites had a better adsorption capacity for oxygen-containing VOCs. By tuning the molecular structure of the VOCs, we revealed the adsorption mechanism of different VOCs at the molecular level. The more developed hierarchical pore structure obtained at the higher temperature facilitates the diffusion of the benzene series, and the noncovalent interaction between their methyl group(s) and the carbonized MOF derivatives improves the adsorption affinity; while the higher exposure of Zn sites obtained at lower temperature favors the adsorption of oxygen-containing VOCs by Zn-O bonds. The mass transfers of VOCs and the role of the adsorbent were simulated by multiple theoretical models. This study strengthens the basis for the design and optimization of the adsorbent and catalyst for VOCs treatment.

Manganese-Based Immunostimulatory Metal-Organic Framework Activates the cGAS-STING Pathway for Cancer Metalloimmunotherapy

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show tremendous promise for drug delivery due to their structural and functional versatility. However, MOFs are usually used as biologically inert carriers in most cases. The creation of intrinsically immunostimulatory MOFs remains challenging. In this study, a facile and green synthesis method is proposed for the preparation of a manganese ion (Mn2+)-based immunostimulatory MOF (ISAMn-MOF) for cancer metalloimmunotherapy. ISAMn-MOF significantly facilitates the activation of cyclic GMP-AMP synthase-stimulator of interferon genes (cGAS-STING) related genes and signaling pathways in bone-marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs). BMDCs treated with ISAMn-MOF secrete 4-fold higher type I interferon and 2- to 16-fold higher proinflammatory cytokines than those treated with equivalent MnCl2. ISAMn-MOF alone or its combination with immune checkpoint antibodies significantly suppresses tumor growth and metastasis and prolongs mouse survival. Mechanistic studies indicate that ISAMn-MOF treatment facilitates the infiltration of stimulatory immune cells in tumors and lymphoid organs. This study provides insight into the design of bioactive MOFs for improved cancer metalloimmunotherapy.

Embedded nano spin sensor for in situ probing of gas adsorption inside porous organic frameworks

Spin-based sensors have attracted considerable attention owing to their high sensitivities. Herein, we developed a metallofullerene-based nano spin sensor to probe gas adsorption within porous organic frameworks. For this, spin-active metallofullerene, Sc3C2@C80, was selected and embedded into a nanopore of a pyrene-based covalent organic framework (Py-COF). Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy recorded the EPR signals of Sc3C2@C80 within Py-COF after adsorbing N2, CO, CH4, CO2, C3H6, and C3H8. Results indicated that the regularly changing EPR signals of embedded Sc3C2@C80 were associated with the gas adsorption performance of Py-COF. In contrast to traditional adsorption isotherm measurements, this implantable nano spin sensor could probe gas adsorption and desorption with in situ, real-time monitoring. The proposed nano spin sensor was also employed to probe the gas adsorption performance of a metal-organic framework (MOF-177), demonstrating its versatility. The nano spin sensor is thus applicable for quantum sensing and precision measurements.

Enhanced nonlinearities in hybrid structure based on nanoporous membrane and a metallohelicate with promising application in nanophotonics and NLO

The main purposes of this work are designing new hybrid structures based on alumina nanoporous membranes with specific metallosupramolecular structure as well as studies of their usefulness in nonlinear optics (NLO). The NLO studies of the hybrid material is performed on the basis of two methods: the first by the Maker fringe technique, where the second harmonic generation (SHG) signal is recorded by rotating the sample; and the second by SHG imaging microscopy, where the SHG signal is collected point by point on the sample surface. The enhanced SHG signals were obtained without the use of the corona poling method needed during the experiment on thin films in our previous works and clearly shows the efficiency of hybrid materials based on nanoporous membranes as promising materials in devices developed based on NLO.

Probing sub-5 Ångstrom micropores in carbon for precise light olefin/paraffin separation

Olefin/paraffin separation is an important but challenging and energy-intensive process in petrochemical industry. The realization of carbons with size-exclusion capability is highly desirable but rarely reported. Herein, we report polydopamine-derived carbons (PDA-Cx, where x refers to the pyrolysis temperature) with tailorable sub-5 Å micropore orifices together with larger microvoids by one-step pyrolysis. The sub-5 Å micropore orifices centered at 4.1-4.3 Å in PDA-C800 and 3.7-4.0 Å in PDA-C900 allow the entry of olefins while entirely excluding their paraffin counterparts, performing a precise cut-off to discriminate olefin/paraffin with sub-angstrom discrepancy. The larger voids enable high C2H4 and C3H6 capacities of 2.25 and 1.98 mmol g-1 under ambient conditions, respectively. Breakthrough experiments confirm that a one-step adsorption-desorption process can obtain high-purity olefins. Inelastic neutron scattering further reveals the host-guest interaction of adsorbed C2H4 and C3H6 molecules in PDA-Cx. This study opens an avenue to exploit the sub-5 Å micropores in carbon and their desirable size-exclusion effect.

A Dual-Responsive Magnetoactive and Electro-Ionic Soft Actuator Derived from a Nickel-Based Metal-Organic Framework

There is growing demand for multiresponsive soft actuators for the realization of natural, safe, and complex motions in robotic interactions. In particular, soft actuators simultaneously stimulated by electrical and magnetic fields are always under development owing to their simple controllability and reliability during operation. Herein, magnetically and electrically driven dual-responsive soft actuators (MESAs) derived from novel nickel-based metal-organic frameworks (Ni-MOFs-700C), are reported. Nanoscale Ni-MOFs-700C has excellent electrochemical and magnetic properties that allow it to be used as a multifunctional material under both magnetoactive and electro-ionic actuations. The dual-responsive MESA exhibits a bending displacement of 30 mm and an ultrafast rising time of 1.5 s under a very low input voltage of 1 V and also exerts a bending deflection of 12.5 mm at 50 mT under a high excitation frequency of 5 Hz. By utilizing a dual-responsive MESA, the hovering motion of a hummingbird robot is demonstrated under magnetic and electrical stimuli.

Porous frameworks from Ecuadorian clays

This research provides a literature review on several topics as a foundation to comprehend porous materials, their structure, and behavior to explore how they can be derived from clays and nanoclays. In this case, considering the several minerals present in some Ecuadorian clays, which are a potential starting material for the synthesis of porous frameworks, they constitute a solid source of metal atoms such as Silicon or Aluminum. This research presents the evaluation and characterization via XRD and AAS of clay samples collected in the southeast of Ecuador in the provinces of Azuay, Morona Santiago and Zamora Chinchipe, which present diversified soil mineralogy with many chemical and crystallographic features for suitable precursors in nanomaterials design.

Carbohydrate-aromatic interface and molecular architecture of lignocellulose

Plant cell walls constitute the majority of lignocellulosic biomass and serve as a renewable resource of biomaterials and biofuel. Extensive interactions between polysaccharides and the aromatic polymer lignin make lignocellulose recalcitrant to enzymatic hydrolysis, but this polymer network remains poorly understood. Here we interrogate the nanoscale assembly of lignocellulosic components in plant stems using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance and dynamic nuclear polarization approaches. We show that the extent of glycan-aromatic association increases sequentially across grasses, hardwoods, and softwoods. Lignin principally packs with the xylan in a non-flat conformation via non-covalent interactions and partially binds the junction of flat-ribbon xylan and cellulose surface as a secondary site. All molecules are homogeneously mixed in softwoods; this unique feature enables water retention even around the hydrophobic aromatics. These findings unveil the principles of polymer interactions underlying the heterogeneous architecture of lignocellulose, which may guide the rational design of more digestible plants and more efficient biomass-conversion pathways.

The plant biomass is a composite formed by a variety of polysaccharides and an aromatic polymer named lignin. Here, the authors use solid-state NMR spectroscopy to unveil the carbohydrate-aromatic interface that leads to the variable architecture of lignocellulose biomaterials.

Fluorescent CQD-Doped Styrene Acrylic Emulsion Coating Film with Enhanced Optical Properties

Styrene acrylic emulsions (SAEs) have emerged as a promising material for water-based coatings. However, they are still limited by their own defects in practical applications, poor weatherability, and degradation of performance at lower or higher temperatures. Here, we introduce a facile approach to producing fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from wood processing residues and fabricating fluorescent CQD/SAE coating films via emulsion-casting. The addition of the fluorescent CQDs enhanced the optical performance of the CQD/SAE coating films. The fluorescent CQDs were prepared via a hydrothermal approach and were obtained after heating at 180 °C for 6 h at a reaction concentration of 50 mg/mL. The synthesized CQDs resulted in a high fluorescence, and the CQDs had an average size of 1.63 nm. Various concentrations of the fluorescent CQDs were doped into the SAE coating film, which improved its optical properties. We also characterized and discussed the products and then explored their optical properties. This study presents the potential of fluorescent CQD/SAE coating films for applications in anti-counterfeiting coatings, fluorescent adhesives, and papermaking.

Advances in Microwave Synthesis of Nanoporous Materials

Usually, porous materials are synthesized by using conventional electric heating, which can be energy- and time-consuming. Microwave heating is commonly used in many households to quickly heat food. Microwave ovens can also be used as powerful devices in the synthesis of various porous materials. The microwave-assisted synthesis offers a simple, fast, efficient, and economic way to obtain many of the advanced nanomaterials. This review summarizes the recent achievements in the microwave-assisted synthesis of diverse groups of nanoporous materials including silicas, carbons, metal-organic frameworks, and metal oxides. Microwave-assisted methods afford highly porous materials with high specific surface areas (SSAs), e.g., activated carbons with SSA ≈3100 m² g^-1 , metal-organic frameworks with SSA ≈4200 m² g^-1 , covalent organic frameworks with SSA ≈2900 m² g^-1 , and metal oxides with relatively small SSA ≈300 m² g^-1 . These methods are also successfully implemented for the preparation of ordered mesoporous silicas and carbons as well as spherically shaped nanomaterials. Most of the nanoporous materials obtained under microwave irradiation show potential applications in gas adsorption, water treatment, catalysis, energy storage, and drug delivery, among others.

H2O and H2S adsorption by assistance of a heterogeneous carbon-boron-nitrogen nanocage: Computational study

A model of heterogeneous carbon-boron-nitrogen (C-B-N) nanocage was investigated in this work for adsorbing H2O and H2S substances. To achieve this goal, quantum chemical calculations were performed to obtain optimized configurations of substances towards the surface of nanocage. The calculations yielded three possible configurations for relaxing each of substances towards the surface. Formation of acid-base interactions between vacant orbitals of boron atom and full orbitals of each of oxygen and sulfur atoms yielded the strongest complexes of substance-nanocage in comparison with orientation of substances through their hydrogen atoms towards the surface of nanocage. As a consequence, formations of interacting H2O@C-B-N and H2S@C-B-N complexes were achievable, in which mechanism of action showed different strengths for the obtained complexes. Variations of molecular orbital features and corresponding energy gap and Fermi energy for the models before/after adsorption could help for detection of adsorbed substance through a sensor function. And finally, such C-B-N nanocage showed benefit of providing activated surface for efficient adsorption of each of H2O and H2S substance with possibility of differential adsorption regarding the strength of complex formations.

Facile fabrication of micro-/nanostructured, superhydrophobic membranes with adjustable porosity by 3D printing

Porous membranes with special wetting properties have attracted great interest due to their various functions and wide applications, including water filtration, selective oil/water separation and oil skimming. Special wetting properties such as superhydrophobicity can be achieved by controlling the surface chemistry as well as the surface topography of a substrate. Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a promising method for the fast and easy generation of various structures. The most common method for 3D printing of superhydrophobic materials is a two-step fabrication process: 3D printing of user-defined topographies, such as surface structures or bulk porosity, followed by a chemical post-processing with low-surface energy chemicals such as fluorinated silanes. Another common method is using a hydrophobic polymer ink to print intricate surface structures. However, the resolution of most common printers is not sufficient to produce nano-/microstructured textures, moreover, the resulting delicate surface micro- or nanostructures are very prone to abrasion. Herein, we report a simple approach for 3D printing of superhydrophobic micro-/nanoporous membranes in a single step, combining the required topography and chemistry. The bulk porosity of this material, which we term "Fluoropor", makes it insensitive to abrasion. To achieve this, a photocurable fluorinated resin is mixed with a porogen mixture and 3D printed using a stereolithography (SLA) printing process. This way, micro-/nanoporous membranes with superhydrophobic properties with static contact angles of 164° are fabricated. The pore size of the membranes can be adjusted from 30 nm to 300 nm by only changing the porogen ratio in the mixture. We show the applicability of the printed membranes for oil/water separation and the formation of Salvinia layers which are of great interest for drag reduction in maritime transportation and fouling prevention.

Preparation of nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanosphere/graphene composite aerogel for efficient removal of quinoline from wastewater

The deep removal of quinoline from coking wastewater is a prerequisite for reducing its potential threat to environmental safety. Therefore, it is urgent to develop advanced materials for efficient removal of quinoline in wastewater. In this work, a nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanosphere/graphene composite aerogel (HCNS/NGA) was prepared by in-situ reduction self-assembly strategy, in which HCNS prevents the agglomeration of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets, and a special sphere-sheet mutual support structure is formed to ensure the structural stability. As-prepared HCNS/NGA exhibits large specific surface area, hierarchical pore structure, and excellent conductivity. Large cavity inside and hierarchically porous structure that primarily consists of micropores, resulting in high quinoline adsorption performance (138.37 ± 2.58 mg g^-1 at 298 K). Furthermore, in a fixed-bed column adsorption system, the partition coefficient at 10% breakthrough reaches up to 35.19 mg g^-1 μM^-1. More importantly, HCNS/NGA, as a conductive monolithic sorbent, can realize easy solid-liquid separation, as well as efficient regeneration in situ by electrochemically assisted regeneration. After ten regeneration cycles, the adsorption capacity retention is 91.54%. In short, as an efficient adsorbent, HCNS/NGA has an enormous application potential in wastewater treatment.

Nitrogen, sulfur co-doped hierarchical carbon encapsulated in graphene with "sphere-in-layer" interconnection for high-performance supercapacitor

Rational design of electrode with hierarchical charge-transfer structure and good electronic conductivity is important to achieve high specific capacitance and energy density for supercapacitor, but it still remains a challenge. Herein, a nitrogen, sulfur co-doped pollen-derived carbon/graphene (PCG) composite with interconnected "sphere-in-layer" structure was fabricated, in which hierarchically pollen-derived carbon microspheres can serve as "porous spacers" to prevent the agglomeration of graphene nanosheets. The optimized PCG composite prepared with 0.5 wt% of graphene oxide (PCG-0.5) exhibited high specific capacitance (420Fg^-1 at 1Ag^-1), rate performance (280Fg^-1 at 20Ag^-1), and excellent cycling stability with 94% of capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles. The symmetrical device delivered a remarkable energy density of 31.3Whkg^-1 in neutral medium. Moreover, density functional theory calculation revealed that PCG electrode possessed the accelerated charge transfer and enhanced electronic conductivity, thus ensuring a remarkable electrochemical performance. This work may afford an effective strategy for the development of biomass-derived carbon electrodes with novel charge-transfer structure toward supercapacitor applications.

Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Hybrid Flocculants Based on Potato Starch Copolymers with Hollow Carbon Spheres

Novel carbon nanofiller-based starch-g-polyacrylamide hybrid flocculation materials (St-PAM-CS) were in situ prepared using potato starch (St), acrylamide (AM), and hollow mesoporous carbon spheres (CSs; diameters of 300–400 nm). Structures of different St-PAM-CS systems were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-Ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), laser scanning microscopy (LSM), and particle size analysis. The flocculation tests were evaluated by removing high turbidity kaolin suspension—initial absorbance 1.84. The effect of the St to AM molar ratio, doses, and content of CSs in hybrids on flocculation efficiency were examined. Satisfactory flocculation efficiency was obtained for all hybrids with 1 wt.% of the CS component. The highest reduction of the kaolin suspension absorbance (to 0.06) was observed for a 3 mL dose of the starch hybrid with the highest AM content. Additionally, St-PAM-CS showed a reduction in the sludge volume in time. The hybrids reached better flocculation efficiency in relation to the reference systems without CSs. The proposed flocculation mechanism (considering bridging, patching, and formation of hydrogen bonds) has been confirmed by the recorded results.

Novel Terahertz Spectroscopy Technology for Crystallinity and Crystal Structure Analysis of Cellulose

Crystallinity is an essential indicator for evaluating the quality of fiber materials. Terahertz spectroscopy technology has excellent penetrability, no harmful substances, and commendable detection capability of absorption characteristics. The terahertz spectroscopy technology has great application potential in the field of fiber material research, especially for the characterization of the crystallinity of cellulose. In this work, the absorption peak of wood cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, wood nano cellulose, and cotton nano cellulose were probed in the terahertz band to calculate the crystallinity, and the result compared with XRD and FT-IR analysis. The vibration model of cellulose molecular motion was obtained by density functional theory. The results showed that the average length of wood cellulose (WC) single fiber was 300 μm. The microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was bar-like, and the average length was 20 μm. The cotton cellulose nanofiber (C-CNF) was a single fibrous substance with a length of 50 μm, while the wood cellulose nanofiber (W-CNF) was with a length of 250 μm. The crystallinity of cellulose samples in THz was calculated as follows: 73% for WC, 78% for MCC, 85% for W-CNF, and 90% for C-CNF. The crystallinity values were obtained by the three methods which were different to some extent. The absorption peak of the terahertz spectra was most obvious when the samples thickness was 1 mm and mixed mass ratio of the polyethylene and cellulose was 1:1. The degree of crystallinity was proportional to the terahertz absorption coefficients of cellulose, the five-movement models of cellulose molecules corresponded to the five absorption peak positions of cellulose.
